I reviewed the Able Carry Daily Backpack a while back and I was pretty impressed. Now Able Carry created a Carry-On Backpack. And although this is just a Quicklook and First Impression, I was already very impressed by the Able Carry Max.

As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.

A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.

You might have noticed : I have not answered the question that was posted in the title. When I filmed and scripted the video I was impressed by the Able Carry Max. But when I edited the video I was even more impressed in hindsight. That is why I am actually asking myself if this is going to be a "best carry on bag" contender at the end of the year. I'm really looking forward to test it (hopefully soon) and see if this first impressions will hold up in a real life usecase.

Hey Bo! Great video, I agree with the area for improvement you mentioned, that the front pocket could be so much more. I just switched out my EDC to this bag from my A19 Evade 1.5. Hope all is well!

My take on the front pocket - it is meant for pouches and not for loose items.. you can stash them - like phone, wallet etc.. during the security screening, but not for the long haul. I actually prefer the horizontal inner pockets because when you sling the bag to the front to open the zipper, if you had vertical pockets all the stuff would fall out... the reverse inner pockets (horizontal) is what keeps those in place... After much research, when you get a back, use the system that the bag is built for (or) figure out your personal system and get a bag that goes with it.. I have a system - packing cubes and pouches and I need a bag that did not get in my way ..i.e. no organization pockets , admin panel etc.. Find your style of travel and then shop for stuff...

I got mine in black last week! The thing I like the most is its versatility. It doesnt look out of place in a work environment, city trip or when doin some hiking. The size is enough for traveling but because the bag is so stiff and supported it doesnt look bad when only little packed. The thick shoulderstraps, backpanel with mesh/airchannel and the sporty lookin xpac really set it apart from e.g. a Bellroy Transit. Edit: Forgot to mention that I weighed mine with a digital scale and it stays a little under 1.7kg, so your 2kg sound a bit strange

That is a decent bag. I like the colorway, it will standout from other bags but still also be very muted. I also carry my water bottles inside of my bag, first it makes the bag look aesthetically pleasing and second, also makes it easier to move around in an urban environment. I just hope the functionality is able to match the form. Thanks for sharing, Bo.

I bought this bag for a recent trip and for some EDC use. It does hold its shape. Agree with you on the front pocket. Also found the pocket for extra items in the Tech compartment a bit limited due to sizing. I was able to travel with this bag as a personal item-a fact which has now informed my decision of what can fit there despite published airline dimensions.

I have been using this pack on and off for the last few months and it might be one of my all time favs. As of now, the only thing I have not liked about the pack is the magnetic sternum strap. Reason? It often clicks together as I take it off or move it around (unknown to me) and when I try to sling it on, I'm denied by the strap. While minor, it's really my only complaint this far. It's over all an amazing pack.

Thanks for the feedback, Esteban. This was just a Quicklook and first impressions. Once I can properly review the bag (Germany is still in lockdown) I will obviously fill it up, properly test and use it 😉

Es gibt so viele coole Backpacks da draußen. Mein Problem ist immer das Eigengewicht von denen. Wie ich es verstehe gibt es in Amerika keine Gewichtsbegrenzungen wen es um Carry-On geht. Aber hier hat die Lufthansa z.B. 8kg festgelegt und wen die Tasche dann schon 2kg wiegt bleibt nicht mehr viel übrig und ist ein Deal Breaker für mich. Besonders wen man mit etwas suchen größere Backpacks mit weniger Gewicht findet. Ich denke es wäre eine gute Tasche wen man entweder nicht viel packt oder nicht mit dem Flugzeug unterwegs ist. (Was im Moment nicht schwer fällt).

Ja, das Gewichtslimit ist in der Tat ein Problem. Aber beim letzten Flug vor mehr als einem Jahr hab ich einfach mein MacBook pro in die Hand, Akkus in die Jackentasche und Kamera um Hals. Und da war die Tasche direkt 2 kg leichter 😂 und wenn man sich die ganzen business Menschen mit carryon Koffer und Laptop Tasche sehe, dann frage ich mich auch warum eigentlich nur die grosse Tasche gewogen wird.

I got a ad for the perfect travel bag before the video. I love all the compartments and lashing points, but I wonder how I would do packing for a trip on those smaller airlines that have a 7kg weight limit. I tend over pack with extra chargers and such. The inside water bottle pocket is not a deal breaker I see Tom Bihn does that with some of their travel backpacks too (like the Synapse 19) I guess normal airline travel it would not a concern. LOL I used to pack a bag that weighed 12kg with all of my cameras, lenses, flashes and batteries now I'm down to 5 to 6kg.

With all my gear I tend to overpack as well. Best is to take out laptop and maybe charger etc and put them in your pockets and hold the laptop in your hands before the bag gets weight. That way you definitely can save at least 1,5kg

@@Youknowthebo I once had to put my big lens on my camera and wear it around my neck and put lenses in my pockets that’s why I wear cargo shorts on trips I had 10 kg and had to get it down to 7kg And another airline saw I was a photographer and told me go on don’t worry about it😀

I've been debating between the able carry max and the evergoods cpl 28. Any thoughts on which one you would go with?

I own both. If you're not bothered by the lack of external water bottle pocket (okay with keeping the bottle inside the bag), the CPL might fare better. The boxier shape of the CPL is also more space efficient, IMO. Bo mentioned it in the video, the Max's front compartment is indeed troublesome. Things stored inside eventually fall out, jumbled at the bottom of the compartment. If I'm nitpicking the CPL28v2, its issues are: the choice of fabric that pickup lint like crazy, lack of strap keepers, and lack of zipper pull in the front compartment.

Good question. I like both a lot. But due to the pandemic I haven't been traveling for two years. Therefore I have not been able to field test carry on bags. That being said I like both a lot

No, Germany is still struggling with the pandemic. Although traveling has somewhat opened up, I haven't felt comfortable traveling yet. Plus Germany might go into another lockdown, so I won't be able to test any carry on bags fully any time soon unfortunately

Yeah, this can definitely be an issue or at least something to keep in mind. What I tried the last time I was flying: I just took out the laptop, chargers and maybe my camera before weighing. Considering business people always fly with a carryon plus a laptop bag, most flight staff don't mind if you just carry the laptop in hand. This saves you at least 1-2 kg.
