You left out the granddaddy of mobile antennas, the venerable 102" stainless steel whip! I know it can't be mounted on every vehicle but if you can, do it! You don't be disappointed! Also, the Hygain SPT-500 "Super Penetrator" 5/8 wave ground plane! Best base antenna on the market today and had been around since the 70's.
@RaccoonsRadioRanch
@RaccoonsRadioRanch 2 года назад
I didn't forget , I just listed what might be the easiest antennas for someone new to the radio hobby to find . Performance wise , those two are excellent antennas . But the Hy-Gain 5/8's antenna just came back a few years ago ... and it's had mixed reviews . Once I know more about what people think about it , I'll talk more about it . I try not to steer people the wrong way , which isn't always easy to do . Now the Hy-gain Penetrator from the 70's was an amazing antenna . But good luck finding one of those these days . Thanks for watching John , and for the comment . It's always appreciated .

The Wilson 5000 is an amazing antenna. I've used it and like the video said I put it on my stove to test it with a base/mobile antenna it got out and received just fine before I reattached it to my A99. The 100 is fine, but I personally recommend the 5000. The K40 bases in upstate NY at speeds of around 60 mph tend to crack. The Wilson is in my view the better choice.

I drove a 18 wheeler for 35 years and in those years I have had every mobile antenna you can think of. I retired 15 years ago and hit the road again with a camper just to enjoy some of the places I had been. I bought a Little Will to use with my Cobra 29. This was the best antenna I ever owned. It has been 15 years ago since I bought it. I still use that antenna on my van. It has out lasted the 3 vehicles I have bought. I very strongly suggest the purchase of this antenna as a mobile antenna. Thank You for the video. I also agree with you on the base antennas I use the Sirio now for my base radio.

Very helpful video. Specially for myself as I'm just starting and studying for my first licence here in Belgium At my home, my big chimney has a 2mx1m steel rain cover plate, on top. So, i put a magnet mount Sirio 5000 up there. and used "203" coax. the SWR is 1:1.2-3 on channel 20. Most everyone hears me quite well. On SSB I've talked briefly "across the pond", Spain, UK, Poland, etc. This 200 + cm antenna is virtually invisible against the sky. very discret.... One of my very experienced AR friends here, just installed an Imax 2000, like you talked about here. He tested SWR, etc and is really happy with it. He used 3M "33" tape at every joint I saw in his photo report. I'm going to share this video with the club, because it’s relevant and easy to understand (their mother tongue isn't English, so your clear descriptions help a lot) When I get my beginners license, I'll check this video again, and get a "proper antenna" ! thanks :-) Peter Hume Brussels Belgium

@RaccoonsRadioRanch
@RaccoonsRadioRanch 10 месяцев назад
Hi Antonio , whenever you're installing an antenna , the distance between any power lines , and the antenna should always be at least one and one-half times the height of the antenna and mast assembly. Meaning that if your antenna and mast are a total of 30 feet in the air , then they should be *at least* 45/50 feet from all power lines . Whenever it's possible, you should try to make the distance even greater if you can. Thanks for watching my videos , and welcome to the Ranch .

It would matter if you turned that Moonraker right at them and then keyed it up ... lol . I'm not a fan of the Lil Wilson antennas , but I love my Wilson 1000 . If you're looking for a good vertical antenna , you should try an Antron 99 , or an Imax 2000 ... or maybe a Maco V 5/8 . They're all good vertical antennas . But the Antron 99 and the Imax 2000 are much easier to put up. There's just 3 sections to put together , and they come already pre-tuned , and ready to go .

I don't have a base unit yet, but the setup in my pickup includes a President McKinley, 102" whip, and I'm absolutely not running an RM Italy 203P. Although RM Italy advertises the amp I'm not running at 100 watts, on a meter the output is only 35 watts. I had another 203P NIB that I definitely didn't hook up, and that output was also 35 watts. But that 35 watts that I'm absolutely not running is plenty to reach from New England to all over Canada, Northern Ireland, Poland, Bosnia, the Caribbean, and the continental US. In terms of a mobile CB antenna, I feel very strongly that any list is incomplete without the 102" whip.

Manel , I'm glad to hear that you got your antenna figured out , and that your SWR is low . But I honestly have no idea what to tell you about the noise interference that you're receiving . But for it to be 9 S Units , it has to be coming from somewhere fairly close to your home . It could be something electrical like power lines , or interference from a florescent light somewhere in the building that has a weak or bad Ballast . It could also be an alarm system somewhere near by . The most I can recommend is to either try and track it down using something like a handheld CB radio , or buy a inline filter that might hopefully filter some of that noise out for you so you can hear the locals a little better .

i live in a hoa development, and they have a restriction that says no antennas, so I had an old satellite dish I made a half wave antenna they do not say anything about a satellite dish, so I made my antenna. I bought a pvc pipe it is 1 inch and I cut three-foot pieces and put them at equal distance around the dish and put them together at the ends and put a so239 at the ends and took 9 feet of copper wire and wrapped it around the pvc it needs not be perfect but leave a little space between the wraps and make sure to ground the antenna. I checked the swr on mine and it was 1.0 on channel and about 1.6 on channel 1, tilt your antenna up as high as it will tilt and you can swivel it around to get the best pickup of other stations you can hook your ground to one of the little holes on the back of the so239 there are four of them when you put the ends of the copper wire together you have to solder them to the center connecter on the back of the so239 make sure they do not touch the ground wire the copper wire that I have is coated with shellac you can heat it up with a propane torch and then take of sand paper and sand the rest of it off I went to a hard ware store and bought a ground rod all they had was a ten foot rod so I had to cut it about 4 or 5 feet long and by the way it is copper on the outside but steel on the inside but it will work all my cost was the pvc and the ground rod you can get the copper wire out of an old transformer I already had mine good luck ,if you do it right it will work very well for you, look around you might find a dish that is not being used anymore when I said about removing the coating from the copper wire you you only have to do each end about 1 inch will do

I'm trying to put an antenna CB with a magnetic base on a small stand of my roof next to my window, but .. there's no way to get ground plane .... inside the house a short distance from the window I have radiators and everything Type of things where the magnetic base is hooked and I'm sure I would have a good Ground Plane .. So my idea is ... Two magnetic bases could be connected? One on the roof near the window with the antenna, the cable of that base would be the entrance to the other base .. The one that would be put at some good place .. and of the latter to the radio station .. I could work?

Manel , I'm going to tell you something that will probably make you laugh but it worked . When I first got back on the CB about 26 years ago , I used a Magnet mount antenna as my base antenna , and I put a metal coffee can in the eaves trough of my house , mounted the antenna on the coffee can , and I could talk for 3 or 4 miles in all directions around my house . If you try this , just make sure to check the SWR and make sure it isn't high ... it shouldn't be , but it's better to be safe than sorry. You can also stick the Magnet mount antenna on your stove for a good ground , or anything else inside , or outside that might be metal . It doesn't necessarily have to be really high (I mean it would help) , it just needs to have a good ground . Just always make sure the SWR is good . If you have any other questions feel free to ask and try to help the best I can .

I would NEVER live in an HOA. It's downright unAmerican. Unfortunately the city where I live has gotten almost as bad as an HOA. I remember back in the mid '70s when I got my first CB. You could get some amazing antennas back then. I lived out on a farm back then, and had a Moonraker 4. It was a 4 element beam antenna, known as a cubical quad. It was very directional, and needed to be used with a rotator. This was before SSB, and you could easily transmit and receive 20-30 miles with it on AM under the right conditions, when you had it pointed it the right direction, with only 4 watts. Sadly they don't make CB antennas like that anymore. I have a homemade 5/8 wave ground plane antenna at home, a little Will on my car, and a Wilson 1000 on my pickup. I only carry an AM radio in my vehicles, because I only use them for short range communication with other vehicles, and that is what almost everyone else has. I have a 100 watt SSB radio at home.
