I just love you man!!! You're the FIRST RU-vidR/guntuber I've heard that actually said a product was too pricey when referring to the FX unit. I've had guntubers hide my comments in their channel because I said the same thing about products their are pimpin. I can't stand it when guntubers try to convince shooters that they need to pay these crazy high prices just to improve their kit.
An excellent example of empirical testing. I used a Labradar extensively when first launched and found it to be overly sensitive to direction etc. and wouldn’t record my 22-284 95g projectiles nor .17 HMR or 0.17 centrefires, so sold it on. Some months later I bought another together with the external microphone as mentioned by you with a sucker pad attached to the rifle stocks. This particular device now worked splendidly and records everything and of course using the Doppler feature it’s direction pointing is not so critical. I also use a battery pack, so no issues there. However I think it needs a revamp in overall size as you mention plus Bluetooth connectivity etc.
I have a Magneto Sporter, and I made a mount for it using an old Caldwell front shooting rest. The bag was removed and I drilled a hole in it and mounted the Magnetospeed to it. It works and a lot cheaper than the commercial made mounts for it.
What about the Andiscan 2 from Czechoslovakia. I have one along with a Magnetospeed 3. I have tested them alongside a Labradar and have found all of them within 3-7 ft/sec of each other. The andiscan 2 is about the size of the Labradar screen and is very portable and accurate.
The Lab Radar may be better because it has variable trigger type and sensitivity, so if you're at a busy outdoor range other shooters don't trigger it. You can also change trigger type to a plug in cable which velcros to your firearm. Also has a plug in for an external power supply. If the FX had those features it would be more attractive. It's a chore and sucks for prone, but I have had an Oehler35p for decades.
Im still running my Magnetospeed sporter for the last 5 years. Not saying it’s the best but it works. At this point mine is held together with electrical tape 😂
Have a Lab R, got ball joint to attach to it got a square piece of 3/8" thick nylon and mounted it to the ball unit, works great, and one great feature is the large display screen for us older guys. One great feature is that you can get a trigger sensor for the LR, change the doppler to trigger setting, and I never use AA batteries, use power supply like yours. Now I see the new Garmin unit, pocket size and they work great I hear, will let you know if I pull the trigger. The new Garmin will be the best of the bunch down the road I think, and price comparable to LR. Great video showing us all the options between the 3 you showed. Thx, 👍👍👍👍
@@randomidiot8142 I read that a few guys on SnipersHide we’re having some issues that turned me away. The Labradar came available on Midway a week or two ago so I went ahead and picked one up. I also grabbed a couple JKL recoil triggers since I’ve read those help a lot with not missing shots.
@@XRING I hope you don’t encounter any issues. Like I commented above, I read that a few guys on SnipersHide we’re having some issues that turned me away. I've had the Magneto Speed V3 and Sporter, and the Lab Radar I now own the Bulletseeker/Speedseeker due to its small size and versatility. I can actually mount it on rifles and shoot a stage with it own the rifle.
@@leeviwerner4629 yes and no. or maybe. It picks up 9x19 and 308 well, but has probs with smaller bullets, e.g. 233 FMJ 8g standard ball. At least get the extra funnel/atenna/gatherer horn that I do not have
should re-release this with an additional section on the end for the Garmin Xero. kinda looks like it's the new obvious choice for anyone willing to spend more than a few hundred bucks.
I did a whole video release on the Xero. Actually before anyone else. Garmin 901, SIG 10k, Christensen MPR and the Guardian Team match. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ocpu0ktMrbk.html
I feel you left out a lot of information about the FX unit. The fact that it can read velocity at 25yard increments out to 100 yards and display calculated BC is huge for competitive shooters. It also explains why it’s slower to output the speed.
The web site says "four different velocities readings from 0 - 300 yards", so not every 25 yards. Am I misunderstanding something? It does sound like it's encroaching on the Applied Ballistics PDM: not quite there, but pretty darned close!
Just came inside from shooting my Polish AK pistol and right at dusk it's almost like having a flashbang go off every time you touch the trigger...! Practical... Absolutely not but it's fun!
Probably a dumb question, but trying to compare their relative velocity readings would be nearly impossible right? Because the second the bullet leaves the barrel its slowing down, so aince neither can be dialed in to take a velocity at the exact same point in flight, youre naturally going to have some deviation. What if the 4fps difference is just simply one chrono reading 1 foot or 6 inches further in flight? Just curious, i understand what doplar radar is but im not certain on how its sort of aimed.
While I agree with setup time, the Oehler 35P is the graph that all the others are rated against. I dont have an issue with setup, I can normally get mine set-up during a cold line without issue. I've had my 35P for almost 30 years, and it's still as accurate or better than what's available now. But if time is an issue, or simplicity of set-up is what you're looking for, the 35P is not for you. You can speed up the set-up of the 35P by labeling the screens 1, 2, & 3, bungling the cables together and placing a mark (red tape) on the bundled cable to mark the distance to place the first screen.
"So what" if the MagnetoSpeed attaches to the barrel and will affect harmonics, etc. Why are you shooting groups while chrono'ing? That makes no sense. Just don't. If you really have to chrono AND shoot groups at the same time, use the Pictinny Rail Mount System that MagnetoSpeed sells for $50. Good review overall. Thx.
What is the brand and name of the arca rail adapter (precision carbon fiber mount) or the metal one to work with the Magneto chronograph? I shoot rifles with chassis in .22, .308 & 6.5 creed.
That magneto speed is at a real loss, compared to the LabRadar & FX Radar which show up to 5 different range nodes of velocity ( including muzzle)- this allows you to make corrections to the output results on ballistic apps for long range use. The magneto only gives you the velocity at the muzzle. I've got the lab Radar and I'm definitely not putting a grand down on that cheap looking fx Radar with a tiny dark screen. Never had an issue with battery life on the LabRadar....and to have a lit up bigger screen I can actually view easily makes up for the longer set up time for me personally.
Great video... BUT.. you should have used a traditional cronograph like caldwell, you might not like to use them, but its not about what YOU like to use, its for the viewers... plus the magneto speed cant really be used on pistols making a.. Caldwell crono a good all around to compare with the labradar etc.. (not in love with a traditional crono, but it is a traditional standby and affordable, seeing a spread with those would be nice.)
Lab radar pros : work on archery setup, easier to set up from different rifles at the range Magneto speed pro : work for shotgun .. Con: pita to setup to different rifles at the range. . I use my lab radar 90% off the time compare to my v3
Your test is a little flawed, the older version of labradar worked great, the newer models since the changed the mic pickup inside, you need a external mic or recoil trigger if shooting any suppressed weapon,
The fact that the 2 mounts you mentioned cost as much as the Magnetospeed Sporter and more than half of the cost of the V3!! I'm all for spending for nice quality but when the mounts are costing this much it is time for someone to start making $100 mounting setups which would still make a great return on investment and bring prices back down to earth.
Nothing like the FX out there now. It's value is not in the simple testing here, It's the fact that it can calculate BC. You need to know the speed downrange of a bullet to do that. Can the Magneto tell me what the speed of a bullet is at 100 yards?
With suppressor no need to push the muzzle out. Radars parallel to muzzle ok. Some even take it backwards two inches. Only with muzzle breaks nonparallel so that the blast will not hurt the device.
I own a magneto speed and I think its junk. It does read speeds just fine but the material used in all of the parts are cheap crap. I used it on a rifle with a muzzle break and the chronograph device slid down the barrel and shredded the silly strap it came with. I shoot bolt action not an AR platform so the crap frame mounts do me no good. Also, the lcd screen frame broke due to cheap plastic. I called magnetospeed and they send me a new but it broke before I could get it to the range. Now, none of their replacement parts are in stock. Go figure. I'll probably throw it in the trash and get a doppler. Does the increased cost of the FX justify its purchase?
Labradar no use to me, if i go across to the range with 3 bullets and its not aligned correctly you will go home with no speed and have to load all over again, its also to expensive and as well as that where on the range does it measure your speed, i want muzzle velocity, FX even more money, i use the Magneto and i get muzzle velocity but some say it can affect your accuracy and may be true to a certain extent but when i have my load checked with ES i take it off to check accuracy and if its not quite right just tweak coal which will get it to come in, so Magneto for me, it just works every time
Thanks Ray! Finally a best of video without the annoying computer voice and obviously non native English speaking script!😎 (with a no name Chinese product on top)
Had I known you were going to do this comparison which is awesome ,,, I would have sent you one of those cheap Amazon rigs to compare I usually go for the cheap crap and wish I had a good comparison with a quality setup
Good morning, I have the magnetospeed and for around 20 buck I made a simple attachment the connect on a bottom picatinny rail making the magnetospeed float solidly and not touching the barrel. Works great.
Glad to see the FX doing we'll especially considering how new it is! Also it is a must have for the FX to consistently register quiet guns considering I will be using it for alot of Airgun tuning/testing.
I have the Magnetospeed v3 and it works great for my rifles. I do shoot several varmint calibers (22-250 Rem. and 17 Hornet) with reloads that can go over 3900 fps. I know LabRadar has a 3900 fps limit, but what about the FX?
Great info as always. I had my doubts but got my answer now: Mostly local pistol shooting so the lab will be my unit . Fortunately my old chrony chronograph still working and my club has few Labradors. So I am covered. You just saved my money Ray .
Thank You Sir! It is great to learn about the advantages and best settings for each unit. Magnetospeed is honoring a warranty or replacement policy for a friend of mine who owns a sporter. The 3.5mm jack in the black box with LED display got loose or disconnected. This good customer service by Magneto Speed. 👍🇺🇸
Ray iv been following for long time used to watch youre streams with rick before retirement. I finally set up my 308 top loader. I bought arken 4-16 for $224, i didnt know what you meant by they are fuzzy on edges. I notice on 13 power edges are are FUZZY no issues. Be enough a litt better for clower range than on my 10x swfa
Hello Tylar, Thanks you for supporting the channel and for watching the channel. Arken has really come a long ways and in the scope industry and does make a good product for the money. What you observe is common in most scopes that are in that price point. It really doesn’t matter as long as the scope tracks well and you can see your target. I’m glad you were able to get your setup together. Thanks again for the comment and have a great week. Best regards
This was really helpful. I was looking at the magnetospeed but wasn’t sure how good it was. Unfortunately I’d be mostly using it with ARs so I’d have to make some kind of a rail mount, but I think I could figure it out.
The timing of this video is great. I just went through the process of choosing a chrono and these 3 plus the Mach4 and one you didn't mention, the andiscan were what I looked at. In the end I went for the magneto speed for simplicity, ruggedness, accuracy and cost.
An informative video as all yours are. I’ve had a LabRadar for some time and it works fine for how I use it. I’ve never installed a battery and always use the external pack. I made my own stand using an inexpensive ball tripod head. I have also always used a recoil operated trigger that attaches to a small Picatinny rail section on a handguard or chassis or just taping it in place on my ancient 52E using easily-removed electrical tape. As for mounting the Magneto Speed with the Gray Ops mount on a Picatinny rail, there are inexpensive adapters to go from Arca to Pic and the reverse. I have adapters so I can use a Ckye-Pod with Arca head on an AR and an Atlas bipod with Pic head with an Arca rail.
Excellent comparison Ray. I have a Labradar and really enjoy it. The FX does seem intriguing but if they could price it at the same price as the Labradar (if they could) it would be a no brainier. I have contemplated adding a magneto speed but I don't necessarily want to carry around an extension. Time will tell but having one of the three is awesome but in a perfect world I do believe that having both a magneto speed and a Doppler based system would be a well rounded setup for any environment.
I have a new LabRadar with an external trigger and external battery. It great and has not missed a shot hardly for me. I mainly shoot 223’s and it has just never missed a beat for me.
Great review! I've had the LabRadar and Magnetospeed chonographs for 2 to 3 years now. My practice range is full of baffles, posts and concrete making it difficult for doppler. I'm guessing, if you have a wide open range it shouldn't be an issue. For example, while doing a 10 shot ladder test, the LabRadar won't pick up 2 to 3 shots. I've used the JKLprecision trigger, set the unit up and aimed it many, many different ways according to what others have tried without much success. It'll work for a number of shots, then stop picking up. I think it's a good unit but my range is giving it problems. Just my 2 cents.
well, I use a MK set up on my MagnitoSpeed, which is very similar to the Gray Ops used here. What is not shown is the time to set-up and adjust the the Grey Ops/Mk to guarantee shot pick-up and not damage he MagnetoSpeed. I have also found the I often have to readjust when changing rifles due to barrel length or chassis/stock type. For the money its still hard to beat the MagnetoSpeed V3
Thanks Larry. I have the MK as well. The Grey Ops takes less than 5 seconds for me to setup for each individual rifle or chassis. No tools are needed and is extremely fast from platform to platform. 👍🏼
I actually stopped using it because was the older one where I always needed a hex wrench to adjust it. The Grey Ops is so fast, It really is the best one for me.
I put my Labradar in front of the barrel when I'm using a suppressor, since it needs the muzzle blast to activate the radar. There is a mode to trigger the measurement with the radar but I've never used it, because I expect it will quickly drain the battery. The other thing is that the Dopplers measure the velocity from 25-100 yards in front of the barrel and EXTRAPOLATE that back to muzzle velocity. There must be some assumptions made in that process which might explain some of the difference in readings between the units.
Great video XRing, I’m due for another chronograph myself. My 1st one jumped right in front of a bullet & took one right in its display it’s first time out. Would you believe that😬😂. I’m liking the Lab radar but as you said I’m sure it eats batteries quickly. Thanks for sharing.
I have mixed feelings about you reviewing this (true ballistics). I want to see it reviewed, but I don’t want it to be out of stock cause I want mine! It looks like a good chronograph, I look forward to the review. Edit: I agree about the price on the FX. I think for the FX to be competitive with the Labradar, you need to have a comparable product at a lower price, or a superior product at a similar price.
I have a lab radar and its ok but not great its has a hard time tracking small calibers past 70 yards and the app and interface is pretty bad and it hasn't been updated in 2 years so as a company im not impressed with the labradar.
I've had centerfire suppressors dump carbon into my action and chamber as well. I've started leaving an empty fired case in the chamber to catch the carbon. It helps a lot.
ALL of these are so much easier to set up and use than the old school chronographs, but I don't think we have seen the world beating do all chrono....yet. The Magnetospeed not being pistol friendly knocked it out of contention for our situation. While the Labradar isn't perfect, it has been useful for everything we have wanted to chrono. I don't even bother with the onboard batteries on the Labradar anymore. The battery pack just works so much better.
None of the reviews I've seen have taken into account a range setting where there are other shooters around you. My question is if it will discriminate between your rifle and the shooters around you. The Magnetospeed would be fine of course, but what of the radar units?
Depends how big the rifle is next to you and how brutal the muzzle brake. If you have a girl with a .22 a few meters away, it works ok, but if you have somebody with a 50 and a massive brake then it will trigger it. The Labradar uses the muzzle blast to switch on the radar.
@@farmerbrown84 Yeah - I'd like to see a real world review of both side by side and how they handle the situation. Most people don't have the luxury of a dedicated range where they can shoot alone.
I want to get into reloading. I’ve been stocking up supplies for a while now. Primers, powders, die sets. I’ve also been looking at the magneto speed. I like how easy it looks to attach and use.
If you are worried about accuracy, then the Magnetospeed isn't ideal as by default you need to attach it to the barrel. It screws up group sizes and results in a POI shift. You can measure speed, but only speed, you need to remove it to do accuracy testing or zeroing. If you can attach it to an external rail (ARCA or Picatinny), then that fixes that, but you need to have every firearm set up to take that attachment system.
Great video and very good information. The chronograph I have is the Andiscan v2 which is also a doppler radar. The great thing about the Andiscan is the size. It’s ever smaller than the FX and can be mounted to the rifle.
I have done a ton of research and just can't decide between LabRadar and Magnetospeed V3. Any recommendations on one vs other? I mainly will test my 6.5 rifle and .22LR rifle.
My LabRadar shuts down when used with muzzle breaks. I have tried placing the unit in front of the gun, I've tried "triggers", ive removed the "sd" card (recommended from manufacturer, nothing seems to help. Seems to work well with barrels with no muzzel break.🤔🤔 I'll take any advise😊
Can’t use a LabRadar at my range. You’re required to shoot in a “baffle box” and the lab radar cannot be put in a position inside the box to pick up the velocity. My Magnetospeed has worked flawlessly for years now as long as it is set up properly. I would like to see this product get a little more engineering with the mount, but it works. Thanks for the info on the True Ballistics.
great info but very turned off with lack of personal eye safety. LabRadar is a great tool. don't need all the attachment accesories of the magneto version. The Caldwell shoot thru with illuminatora works well in all / dark light conditions and far cheaper. most come with some cellphone app to improve readout an calculations.
Yes, you put the suppressor even with the Doppler radar. Like the instructions say. And when using a muzzle brake that vents to the rear, you need to put it on the operator side of the unit. When using a brake the vents straight to the sides, you can put it in front of it. Clearly you use a brake that vents to the rear so you're hitting that labradar with all that gas and concussion. It's literally in the directions.
I bought a Lab Radar a few months ago. Its been a little troublesome. Don't think it will come anywhere close to the longevity of my Ohler 35P 35 years and still going.
Thank you 🙏! This was a great review. I have a Magento Speed. I absolutely love it. Your review has really convinced me that for the type of shooting I am doing the Magento Speed is exactly what I need. I do need to get that bayonet adapter you are using.
Exactly! I was trying to find the velocity that most copper jackets would spin off. I found it! 😂 Depending on manufacturer it varies from 1350-1500 and then she’s coming apart Scottie! 😆
Gee, thanks for sharing. It was very informative. While I do not shoot competition traveling with a unit is not an issue. Basically, I am only concerned about velocity when I am working up a load for my pistols or rifles and I have been using an Oehler P35. However, setting up the screens at a public range is a pain so I am looking for something easier and cost effective.
