I actually have 100 varieties of David Austin spanning something in the region of 130 plants I did have Brother Cadfael at one point but it’s since been removed from my collection it is incredibly beautiful the fragrance is stunning but it’s very weak and for me produced very few blooms I considered It to be a gateway plant susceptible to black spot mould and mildew it always seem to go down with these issues first and then spread it to other plants in the garden so it was removed

The problem with the length of time bloom lasts is, it is dependent on far too many factors for anybody to give you a clear answer on it if a flower opens, and is the very next minute visited by a pollinator as far as the plant is concerned, the flower is done. The petals will drop if you live somewhere where there isn’t particularly much to be foraged. As far as a pollinator is concerned your blooms won’t last very long, if it is particularly hot This will also affect bloom lifetime.

Before you cross Tess off the list completely if you see it in a garden centre or in another persons garden do take a look at it every body experiences fragrance differently and you might find to your nose but it’s very strong especially if you plant in a warm situation or the south or west facing wall

I can totally and understand your point but sometimes it’s just a characteristic of the Rose I have a Jubilee celebration planted in a large galvanised bath it’s around 2 1/2 feet from the floor to buy a time at flowers it reaches over 6 feet so I’m looking up at it all the time

May I ask why you don’t what a bare root rose ?

I guess we are impatient & want to see results faster. We’re new to rose gardening & only planted our DA rose garden in June 2022. We currently have 50 DA rose shrubs (2 garden beds) & got all of them from our garden center in 3 gallon containers.

@@jerseygirl7837 ok a bear root plant will get away just as fast perform, just as well as a potted one, as long as I looked after correctly

It’s simply the time of year, it’s now right at the end of the season in just 3 weeks time new bare root stock will be available for autumn delivery -and I will be telling you all about it from October 1st

I'm in the USA. They just started allowing purchasing of roses on Tuesday. I had Jude the Obscure on my wish list. Jude was sold out by Thursday. Wednesday they sent me a notification The Lark Ascending was available so I hurried and got it before it to became unavailable. If you're in the US go now to the US site. If you're in the UK go to their site and make an account and see if they have a wish list you can add roses to. Then, when the rose becomes available you can get it. Hope this info helps. Just don't wait if you really want one.

@@the_gardenerben I've just bought it and on day 3 one of the stems snapped off with the wind right at the base. Instantly disappointed. What Is the reason you longer grow it please?

I’m afraid I found it weak floppy and very prone to disease the colour and fragrance are extraordinary the foliage when it has leaves it’s very dark green and very glossy I found it a stepping stone plant bringing disease into the garden always blighted with black spot mould and mildew

Good idea if you can put it in the morning sun put protect it from afternoon sun, I hope you have a better experience with it than I did, for reference I have also removed Caroline Knight, Winchester Cathedral, and Brother Cadfael

It would be absolutely impossible to show each of these in any more detail which is why in each individual video that is like this, I suggest if your attention is caught by particular variety that you take the time to seek out is individual and personal Rose review I’m terribly sorry that the media produced for free disappoints you !

I disagree! After looking at *hundreds* of videos by many different gardeners, I ❤ the way Gardener Ben does it is. His are information filled, packed with beautiful close up photos & good advice. Of course, one wants to know the rose's habit, but there are other ways to find that out.

Surely it's not a question of being "impressive" but more about the depth of knowledge, passion, and advice? There are hundreds of videos out there where roses are shown in a garden, but they can be very deceptive. All plants behave slightly differently in different settings, whether it's because of the climate, the soil, where you put them, how you look after them, and so on. It also, in my (professional) experience makes many viewers want to rush out and instantly replicate what they see, and that frequently goes badly wrong. I've lost count of how many times I've been asked (told) to "Make me that." They then get really cross when you tell them it won't work for THEM because of a, b, or c. I just happened upon these videos and find them fascinating and very well done.
