Glad I finally got to watch this, I was the bellman that you talked to at the hotel before you left both mornings you were here in chicago! Glad you went with Lou's, it was nice getting to meet both of you, hope you enjoyed your stay!
I use a fork/knife for the first half. The ones I ate were a bit too heavy to comfortably hold the whole thing without losing toppings. Also, by the time I ate half a slice, the cheese is at that just right gooeyness to stretch a bit still, but not enough to have trouble biting through. Fresh, I need the knife to separate a piece off to eat it.
Christian Reitz dude cmon the other comment like this is at the top and 9 months ago. Clearly copied but why sound salty off of something like this, cuz you know I’m right....
Hurt too? Wtf it’s just a comment and I’m pointing out how ppl clearly always copy top comment, with no regret. Like you literally just repeated the same shit.... 😂🤦♂️
I'm from the NY area and I gotta say deep dish is great. I like living in a world where Chicago and NY-style pizza can coexist! Sending my hellos to Chicago from the East Coast!
I lived in Chicago for 20 years and Gino's East had long since ceased to be great. Never heard of Pequods but looked great and as for Lou Malnati's and Giordano's I always loved them. The ladies do need a lesson in the difference between deep dish and stuffed.
You gals are both right. Lou Malnati's and Pequod's is what I'd recommend for first timers. Giordano's and Gino's East are more like chain (deep dish) pizza places. But... Any first timers can't go wrong with any one of the pizza places. My very first Chicago style pizza is actually Nancy's. Don't knock it 'til you try it. 'Til this day, I would order it for my family to share. Peace!
Lou's is definitely iconic in Chicago but there are plenty of mom and pop pizza spots in the city that have delicious deep dish. All 4 of the spots featured are notably awesome as well. Don't come to the Chi looking to compare a New York slice to a slice of our deep dish "Pie" because they're two different beasts. Keep an open mind and just enjoy....
@@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife portillo's chocolate cake shake is ❤ I atleast carryout 10 large size on my way back to home (Toronto) as all my friend craves for that ❤
I am from the Chicago area and I do enjoy a deep dish from time to time, Uno's is one of my favorites. With that said, 90% of the time people from the Chicago area order tavern style pizza. The deep dish is more of a touristy thing. Vito & Nick's is amazing.
@FULL DOUBLE Literally every person I grew up with; friends, family, etc, do not order deep dish. I am not saying people don't do it but I guarantee that day to day most Chicagoans are ordering the normal, tavern style, square cut pizzas for delivery.
@FULL DOUBLE My family has always lived in Chicago too, so the whole "5 generations" argument is moot as many of us have long ties to the city. Yet I have never come across anyone whose normal, weekly pizza order is a deep dish. Occasionally? Sure. But you're smoking crack if you think the average Chicago household isn't ordering the thin more often than the deep.
@FULL DOUBLE Just take the L buddy. Deep dish is good, nobody's arguing that it isn't. But like I said, you're smoking crack if you believe Chicagoans are ordering more deep dish than the tavern style. Ffs, even WGN did a study/survey that tavern style is ordered more.
hello paul, humbled and honored to announce that i own well over 415 DVD films and have over 1,200 followers on the twitter. but i never realized how similar those sound
Yeah, I'd agree. Native Chicagoan here, they're all good but I'd pick either Lou Malnati's or Pequod's. What I didn't know until this video was Malnati's and Gino's recipes are derived from Uno's recipe, I think that's a cool fun fact. Personally though (as a native Chicagoan) I prefer Chicago style thin crust. Thin crispy crust, sharp thin layer of tomato sauce, Italian sausage under the mozzarella top, tavern cut (square grid like our streets). It's easier to share and not as heavy as deep, goes great with beer. It's the thing we order for sports games, "super bowl size, chicago style" is thin crust but like as big as a table.
My dad grew up in Chicago and he says the best deep dish is a small restaurant in Appleton WI. called Stuc's, my family would go there on occasion and now its so nostalgic that nothing will top it, but I don't think its just the nostalgia that makes it great because my boyfriend loves it and just compared it to Lou Malnati's and he said Stuc's is better, he said Lou's just tasted bland compared to the flavor that Stuc's has, so I highly recommend Stuc's to anybody traveling through WI!
As someone from Chicago, I can heartily say that Chicago deep dish pizza is fantastic! I loveeee thin crust, but given a choice between the two, deep dish allll the way! And the restaurants they went to are awesome!
Im from Germany and would love to try those pizzas! but I have OCD and think that gangs will rob me and take everything from me because im white :/ my mom runs an retirement home so I can't make friends so easy because I think many people see me as "the rich white kid" and I will just get used. Although my mom "only" makes 4500€ a year and I grew up without my real father so we only had 1 income source...
I'm from Chicago, but moved away 40 years ago and still miss Lou's. I ordered online but when I went back to visit, I had to eat there and fell in love all over again.
They went to Lou's so they don't have to. I know they aren't the same, but if you know the history of deep dish in Chicago, Lou's is really the most credible source of being the founder of Deep Dish, since Malnati was a pizza cook (well-documented) at Uno's before he branched out.
@@danjump2 It was first made at Uno's, by Malnati. On the surface, you can say Uno's made it, but any Chicago historian will tell you you're probably wrong. chicago.eater.com/2012/5/8/6589237/chicagos-deep-dish-history-it-all-started-with-unos
Lou malnati has the best sausage, both in quantity and flavor; uno is very good and their sheep milk based cheese makes it unique in the best way. Ginos East has quite remarkable tomato sauce though, to the point that I buy it in cans to use as sauce for spaghetti and other dishes that call for it. They are all good and it’s hard to pick the top 1 but unlike other comparisons on here, these all bring something unique to the table and are all impressively different. Chicago deep dish is absolutely undefeated among pizza styles. I can’t recommend it enough. Everything about it. Crust. Cheese. Sauce. And how they traditionally just have sausage as a topping or sometime pepperoni but the best examples are the ones with just the highest quality sausage.
I am saving money for years now just to visit Chicago (from Germany) for deep dish pizza. And these girls just sit there and eating pizza without freaking out, what for an amazing crazy food they are able to taste
Having tried all of them (They are all good!!), my favorite (if I had to choose one) would be Pequod's. The caramelized crust along with the sauce sets it apart from the rest.
@@domenicmunaretto6315 Lou's is good but they are NOT better lol, they are an extremely overrated chain with like 57 locations all over Illinois. Pequod's is best, also Lou's doesn't have shit on Art of Pizza on Ashland Ave!
You can ask for a "Sausage Patty" at Lou's. It's one giant sausage layer vs the pieces of sausage. I agree Lou's is the best, but I like to also get Gino's for the cornmeal crust sometimes. Have yet to try Pequod. Giordano's is not on my list of good pizza places. However most of the time Chicagoan's regularly order thin crust. Deep dish is the special occasion pizza.
Lived in Chicago my whole life, I’ve tried all these four. pequods is number 1. I prefer the fat sausages. Hard to definitively say what’s the winner as everyone will have preferences as to how they like their deep dish. Pequods checks off all and more.
@@hulee1968 oh man, there's just SO many. Pequods is a local deep dish fave for sure. Giordanos is (apparently) not technically a deep dish pizza due to it's upper cust (I SWEAR THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I MADE UP, PEOPLE HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ON THIS, I'M JUST PASSING INFO, DON'T ATTACK ME) Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co has a delicious pizza pot pie(also definitely not considered deep dish but amazing regardless) you'll surely wait an hour to get seated but if the weather is ok, I promise it's worth it. If you're looking for something non-pizza, just check out google/yelp, they rarely do me wrong, and please leave the loop/river north!!! There is so much Chicago has to offer outside museums, skyscrapers, and the bean :)
@@hulee1968 I might get deported for saying this, but I don't like Chicago style. I'd recommend Nella Pizza e Pasta, Spacca Napoli and La Scarola for Italian. Arun's and Herb for Thai.
those who work for food insider are so lucky they can try and eat a lot of different food from all over the world i want to work for them even for one day
As someone who grew up in Chicago for 13 years, I've had only Lou Malnati's pizza and Giordano's pizza on this list. And Lou Malnati's blows Giordano's out of the water- it's not even close! The way they described Lou Malnati's pizza was perfect, but Giordano's pizza is 90% cheese and the crust is average. Next time I'm in Chicago, I might try Pequod's, but there are so many amazing places to eat in the Chicago area.
Lous has a great deep dish and Giordano thin crust cannot be beat. So I go to both. I wish Pequods was closer I'd like to give them a go, the pie looks amazing
Most of us don't eat deep dish pizza very often. Mostly it's just when entertaining people from out of town and maybe once or twice a year on top of that. If you say "Chicago pizza" to someone from Chicago, what most of us think of is Chicago-style thin crust pizza, which is almost never mentioned in these shows.
That's because these shows are about deep dish pizzas. Not Chicago favourite pizza just Chicago deep dish pizzas. But yh I get you. It's a stereotype that Chicago is just all deep dish lol
Pequod's is on another level. Definitely my favorite pizza in Chicago. I can't visit Chicago without stopping there. While my favorite pizza is from NYC; I think Pequod's is better than most pizzerias in NYC.
Hey. I respect your opinion man. I’ve only been to Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s, Gino’s East and Pizzeria Uno. I didn’t like any of them at all. But i love Pequod’s.
Great job ladies! As a native Chicago and I have tried all the pizzas you have and agree that overall Lou Malnati‘s is always excellent, but I do tend to like Pequads just a little bit better
Arrenello's Pizza in Glenwood, IL. A south suburb of Chicago is hands down the most underrated deep dish pizza in the entire city for more than 25 years.
I’m from Chicago and my favorite deep dish is Edwardo’s spinach deep dish! No one ever mentions that place but it’s the best in my opinion. My whole family agrees!
I worked at Edwardo's for 20 years. I never tired of the food! My favorite was their pesto, on pasta, in a pizza, always a winner! I was very proud of the pizza, the whole menu in fact!
I googled ed's awhile back, mine closed 15 years ago BTW, you're lucky to have yours as long as you did. If I read it right one on North Dearborn in Chicago. But it seems to have gone upscale it's called Eduardo's with an fancier menu. Still an old school Edwardo's in Muncie Indiana. Plus if you Google Ed's you can have a frozen pizza shipped to you. I hate to see the price for that!
I grew up in the north Chicago burbs in the 80s. All the great Chicago places were at their prime. Sad not even mentioned here, but my all time fave, without question, was always NANCY'S. Similar to Giordano's, but Nancy's crust was far superior IMO. Pan (deep dish) pizza: I love Lou Malnati's and Gino's, but the original Pequod in Morton Grove was sublime! RIP Burt Katz...perhaps the greatest pizza maker of all time!
I went to Giordano's for a pepperoni, and sausage deep dish in January. The cheese pull was amazing, the crust was crispy, and not too dense, and the slice held up when I picked it up. I didn't need a fork and knife.
Got this video because I was Googling "Deep Dish Pizza near me" last night I guess? And was reminded in a number of articles that Yes, Chicago got Deep Dish from Milwaukee. We had it first! But Lou Malnati’s delivers to my area. I prefer Gino's when down there. Killer sausage layer!
They are co workers, who cares. I don’t like all my colleagues either, but you continue to work together, coz that’s what professionals do. If their job is to look like friend in front of the camera, that’s what they should do
For me pequads IS THE BEST. I agree on all pionts from Herrine, but while i like the distribution at Lou Malnati‘s, the sausage tastes industrial and tradh to me.
Lou Malnati`s in chicago has the "name" but this is the first vid ive` seen on pequods and the pizza looks fantastic and the idea of putting the sausage across the whole pizza is good too!😋
