Finally someone who says that "standing" desks are not the solution to all problems. 99% of tech setup RU-vidrs always praise standing desks like they're the solution and simply standing will solve everything, instead of moving and leaving your desk for a bit. Thanks for this, man.
ignore everything any of these enthusiasts and "experts" say, buy a 70 dollar legend 45 inch desktop from walmart shipped free to your door and you'll have more than you need. you don't need any of these overpriced products as long as find a desk that permits you to elevate the computer off the ground level
The problem is the height, everyone is different and if I was to buy a standard desk the height would be wrong for me lol. Which is why I get a sit/stand one. I never use it for standing btw, very very rarely lol! However it's worth the price to me to get the correct height!
@@keblin86 It get you. I do have one myself, just because it makes it easier to cable manage and move it around with casters. But that whole "its healthy" bs that pisses me off.
@@GuiDouradoOficial yeh it is a bit overhyped! all it means is it's healthy to move about really lol and sitting for long periods can be unhealthy but it's more about YOU than anything. I sit on my butt gaming all day on my days off lol. However my job is physical so when I am there I get exercise and I am on my feet and moving about the whole shift so it's all about balance. I also exercise a bit outside of this and sometimes skateboard. So it's all about still doing stuff! I am proof you can sit on your butt all day so long as u get some exercise in other days :D
I went the Home Depot butcher block route and love it. 7ft long or so. I cut a 10in section off it long ways and made a monitor riser/stand to add some more utility as well.. With the legs I got, and the stain, it was under $250 at the beginning of the pandemic. Ive got some craft room roll out drawers that work fine for my usecase of half pc desk, half modeling, painted desk.
This video is awesome. I'm not local to an Ikea so back at the beginning of 2021. I went to my home depot and dropped $180 on a 6 foot butcher block top. I went from a 4 foot wide desk with only 21 inch depth to a 6 foot wide and 30 inch depth and it was amazing, ended up coping some crappy legs from amazon that were on the brink of death within the next year and went with some industrial piping and its study as a rock now. i love this desk it is SOOO study and so thick its amazing, hasn't let me down yet. especially being able to drill holes in the bottom for my power strips was a life saver for cable management. My only down side is i got it in Aprilish of that year so it was still super cold out so i never got to stain mine like i wanted to and haven't had the chance since so its a bright wood which i don't care for but regardless the desk is absolutely amazing and a BIIIIIIG recommend to anyone with around $220-$230 budget for a desk.
For almost 20 years I had a 61'' x 30'' mahogany desk and I recently switched to a Desky gaming standing desk 48"" x 29.2"" and never looked back. 61'' was just was too large and took too much space. I was worried taht 48'' would be too small but it's more than enough.
I'm in the process of setting up a desk based on a birch 6' butcher block. They look nice and should last forever, you can always sand it down and refinish it, almost an unlimited amount of times. Its the ultimate Ikea hack.
I bought a cheap, dual motor standing frame on Amazon for around 200. Then I built the top, because nothing was available at the size I wanted. My top is roughly 105" x 32" so it's massive! The electric raising frame handles the weight okay.
Big Man is basicly giving me answers to my new years goal to make my dream desk, thank you for making these vids man. you deserve more atention man, keep up the amazing work.
I went the Home Depot based route and bought an 8'x2' live edge countertop for my setup. I went a little overkill with the project and pulled a lot of inspiration from Blacktail Studio here on RU-vid. I routed out two pockets for some metal C channel to prevent any possible warping, used some nice black powder coated wishbone style legs, stained the wood with a black liquid dye and sealed it with two coats of Rubio Monocoat, a hardwood floor sealer. I have more than enough room for my 34" ultrawide monitor, my pc and my laptop with plenty of space for anything else I might add in the future. There are plenty of cheaper options out there, considering material costs plus all the tools I bought, but knowing that this is the only one like it and I did everything myself makes it all worth it in the end.
My first PC 'desk' was the bathroom door in my studio apt. I figured I could use the dead space behind the door-swing for some shelves and the door itself was more than sturdy enough for my needs. I used a half-height bookshelf on one end, a mini-fridge on the other and routed all the cables through the hole for the door knob - 30yrs later and my current desk really isn't much different. I built it out of 3/4" ply, oak trim and added a riser for my displays with a soundbar (Katana) underneath. It supports my main display and two "reference screens" that I use to track misc stuff. One leg is a filing cabinet which I've modified to house my ITX build and the bottom drawer holds my bills, receipts etc. The other leg is still a bookshelf, holding a USB hub and my HOTAS on the top shelf followed by a rug on the bottom shelf for the fkn cat.

Built my own desk a few years ago. It’s about 8’ long made of 2x4s, sturdy legs bought from Amazon, aluminum angle iron all the way around which is attached with black truss head screws. Legs and tabletop are painted battleship gray. Extremely sturdy. Just need some Tightbond III and some pipe clamps. Done!
Was recently in search for a budget wider desk, the ikea hack desk you mentioned really saved me a lot of time and money, thanks a lot for your videos!
The reason I bought and love my standing desk is not to stand all day. In fact, I rarely stand. I bought it to be able to adjust the height of my desk to a comfortable sitting height to not have shoulder pain and problems from poor ergonomics (which I experienced before and went away after using it). Adjusting your chair height helps but isn't sufficient since most chairs don't go high enough and you don't want your feet to dangle just to have a good desk to hip height. Out of 4 saved heights for my desk, 3 of them are different sitting heights which I alternate between along with my chair height to get a different sitting feeling (changing the position and bend in knee feels good.) I choose to buy the standing desk frame separate so I could choose my desk countertop independently. My desk frame also provides support to the desk, so it doesn’t bow over time thanks to the fact that both sides of the legs (left and right) are linked via a support frame from one side to the other on which the desk countertop lays (is screwed to). Since my standing desk didn't have storage, I just added an Alex drawer to the right of my desk. I also placed my computer tower on it to display it and not lose desk space. (Sit stand desks have a max weight limit which I’m far from surpassing [350lbs for mine] but helps, nonetheless. Standing desks are more expensive, but I “invested” in purchasing one for my health as I would for a desk chair or bed since with the amount of time I spend using it, having one can prevent/mitigate long-term health problems from occurring thus providing me better quality of life and possibly preventing health related bills later on. I’d love to know if anyone else has similar or different reasons for buying a standing desk and how their experience using it has been.
Always good content BIGE! I just go with a classic IKEA hack, big size. Then add a large mousepad, then top it off with some sweet Groovemade details like the wooden laptop stand and speakers. People really think it looks expensive and style. yet you get away with it cheap (except the groovemade stuff).
I wish there's a competitor for secretlab magnus desk for me it is quite expensive for the table with hiding cable compartment, love their innovation though
I have a stand up desk from fully and I love it it helps so much with my back issues definitely don’t stand all day at it just go between sitting and standing multiple times a day definitely helps when being tall so my knees fit under the desk
The Husky Adjustable Height Workbench is a good budget standing desk. It uses a hand crank which is a bit of pain for adjusting, but it gets the job done. Got one on sale for $199 at Home Depot a couple of years ago. Really solid desk and it has the option of adding wheels.
I'm still using a desk from the 90s that has a back part with shelves and stuff. I want to replace it due to wear and how it's difficult to clean behind, but no realistically priced modern desk options are anywhere near as big. I'll definitely have to do something custom.
I picked a termite eaten dead tree on the property and pulled it down… checked for eggs in the bird nest up top first. Took the tree to a mill and had it cut in slices. Picked the best thick piece and used that for my desk top. Used a lift stand from Amazon with decent motors and a touch panel. I just used a light oil wash to seal it. Cable management is heavy and I need to rethink either a wall rack or a better rack on the stand. It’s like a rats nest right now. I like your setup. I have servers and workstations… oh… wall step-off with everything behind it with egg lighting glowing effect. I can do that!
I bought a 349.00 dark oak butcher block from Lowes and a 114.00 steel x legs off Amazon I did cut the butchers block and made a small shelf with the left over cuts imma eventually going to router out a cut around the bottom to put in leds. the smell from the fresh wood is a nice change to my gaming room
I love having a sit/stand desk, I have never seen them advertised as "replace sitting" I think that is a misconception. I had a solid 30x60 top from an old writing desk and bought a sit/stand powered frame from amazon and slapped it on there. You don't use them to just stand all day, you use them to switch from sitting to standing, then you can do some active things like squats, stretch, or whatever. Also a nice idea is to get a easy to move walking treadmill to put under the desk to get steps in if you still want to do some easy work at the desk or watch something. I see the value also to have a solid built butcher block/ikea desk setup with a great chair for concentrated deep work.
The best setup is definitely the Ikea set up I assembled a desk for my girlfriend and it's still in a very good condition. Even though she is a teacher and not a gamer the amount of room is fantastic for her preference and the drawer space is phenomenal! I'd highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for the same experience.
I have a Fezibo sit/stand desk. It's 55x24 and I love it. I paid $200 brand new from Amazon during Christmas. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and so far so good.
For a long time I went the ikea route using an antique door fry high school that I got when it was demolished. I've paired down a lot and now it's way too big. My biggest issue is enough room for my 34' curved monitor - it's a beast and non detachable from its base.
Nice, very nice video! I personally back in 2020 bought the cheapest option from IKEA, it was super simple to assemble, few screws and that's it, yes there are no drawers but I have 2 monitors 27 and 24 inch on them with the whole PC on it (modern one - believe me newer PCs are heavier). The two downsides I see from 3 years now is that in the middle where the 27 inch monitor is it has bent a bit and I wish it was a bit more sturdy, it does not move when i type aggressively but still :D. I would suggest with both hands just go IKEA if you have the option, super cheap and super easy to built I think about 35 Euros or 70 leva (bulgarian currency) i bought the tabletop with the legs, I wanted specific color - all gucci.
Hey there, {{3}}! As a fellow tech enthusiast, I can totally relate to the struggle of keeping a clean and dust-free setup. Have you considered using the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a compact device that offers powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities, perfect for maintaining a spotless environment on your desk and beyond. It's reasonably priced and has some great features like strong suction power and a quick keyboard cleaning function. Definitely worth checking out! 😄🖥🧹
I like the IKEA/Home depot hack job idea. I have a dual pc setup in my Lian Li DK-05 motorized desk. I want to make a butcher block desk next to it and make a detached L-shape and have the best of both worlds. I also want to route a slot around the edge of the butcher block for a diffused rgb strip. Thanks for all the advice
I drew up the plan and I just need to move the desk forward and cut a piece… instead of that I keep the step off and add little shelves. Ok that would be nice. Great video! I have a weekend project!!!
Got the Idåsen sit/stand desk from Ikea, had it for 4 years and it's sturdy as balls. Doesn't rock or wobble even when standing. Think I spent around $400-500 at the time for it.
For a computer desk I bought a 55" Gaming Desk off Amazon for $140 dollars. The desk came with a mouse pad that covers the entire surface of the desk which I really like. Using a vertical dual monitor mount for that clean look on the desk. For a keyboard I'm using a 60% mechanical with a G502 mouse for that even more of a clean look. I was able to place my PC tower on the edge of the desk without breaking that clean look. I ended up buying a storage unit that was the perfect size for under the desk which gives me a place to store few things I use quite often.
You could get one of those husky workbenches at Home Depot they’re like $300. And when you decide to get something later just move that desk out into the garage as a workbench.
been working from home since 2015. I highly recommend a standing desk. Work just gets too distracting to remember to stand up every hr or whatever, a standing desk makes it so simple and quick.
I went ahead and got a fairly nice L shaped desk off Amazon, not quite as big as I wanted but bigger than one I currently had with 2 more inches or so of depth which is kinda what I was looking for. Then just bought some other items on Amazon to make up for the lack of storage (a sliding drawer and then a shelf) desk was 130 marked down from 280 the drawer and shelf put together was another 75 so 205 for a pretty nice, sturdy, and fairly roomy desk. No where near as much depth as the ikea hack desks, but I’m working with extremely limited space and don’t have access to the tools I would need to slim down some of those tabletops. Never feel bad about Amazon shopping, as long as you watch for sales, and are willing to put in a little bit of effort searching around you can turn some of their plain no storage desks into fairly decent budget options for under 300
Hey! Have you checked out the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's a compact device that combines powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities for maintaining a spotless environment on your desk and beyond. It has some great features like multiple tubes, high-quality filters, and a brushless motor for enhanced power. Plus, it's lightweight and portable. Definitely worth considering!
Some of these amazon gaming desks are surprisingly high quality, my GF got one that is mostly solid steel with composite wood topper for 110$ Not something i would get personally, but it's a hell of a deal.
A lot of those with standing desks have a treadmill underneath it. In that scenario, the standing desk is a much better option. The act of walking on the treadmill constricts and releases the blood vessels, increasing circulation. It's the same reason they recommend that you do foot and leg exercises on a long flight. Additionally, it improves cognitive function. FYI, you don't need to buy a desk with storage. You can get a cheap, three-drawer plastic storage tower that fits nicely under most desks. If you want to get fancy, you can go to a furniture store and get an upscale wooden one. Adjustable desks can also remedy poor posture or improper keyboard and mouse height levels to prevent cramping. Most chairs can only adjust to a small degree.
what would you suggest for something with DJ /studio gear?I need space for turntables mixer,,CDJ, sampler, sub mixer, and a bit height adjustment...i already have a metal office cabinet i got for free, and I attached a birch top from Home depot..the issue is,i can mix on it but i need it lower to scratch/juggle with a better angle..I was considering using pipes, flanges, and another wood top,yet i want it height adjustable on casters...or...the setup with the wood top attached to two or three side tables/file cabinets, with a base for casters...
I kinda agree I already decided to buy a nice ish timber top and weld up some legs with scrap metal in my backyard. But not really an option you would have as mist people don't know how to weld
2:01 x rocker has some amazing desks for budget imo. On sale they get to about £50 with a nice mousepad and have great cable management, can hold 100kg and have really good tops that don’t chip like cheap ikea desks
awesome video and a lot good information sadly i cant go with ikea anymore it cost 70€ shipping cost. i bought table top from them some time ago and i paid x3 times more the cost just on shipping.
What stain did you use for the desk in the last few moments of your video? I really want that on my butcher block as I have blue/grey wall as well an it would look amazing.
If I had an extra room that I could turn into a gamer room I'd probably have splurged on the countertop method but in my apartment it had to go in my bedroom which in turn required it to be a l-desk to save space.
I was thinking of going the Secret Labs Magnus Pro XL route, but to be honest it was just to limiting and found it would not give me what I wanted in the end. I am building my own Desk as I am looking for a Desk with specific measurements that are 25 inches by about 84 Inches. It is for a specific location between two pieces of furniture to make it look like it is built in. Thanks for giving me options ideas. Buying pre-built sometimes just not the best option.
What are some alternatives for the desk legs if I were to get this tabletop? I do not have an Ikea near me and the delivery fee is more than the actual product. Are there desk legs I could get that you could recommend or something else?
Ive used a fold out picnic table for over 10 years i spent 60$ on. It was big and has served me well and is sturdier than youd think. i have triple 32" setup on it and its flaw is its not well suited for monitor clamps. 72" desks arent easy to find and often expensive. I ordered a bush office L shaped desk and hoping its ok for my needs.
Great video and information. My only critique is if you buy something offline - that means you go to a store. If you buy it online, that means you bought it on a digital storefront.
My current desk is 42"wide by 34" deep..its an old typewriter desk and it's sturdy and heavy as hell. I was happy with it until I got a 32" monitor and built a PC. It all fits with speakers but its tight. I'm looking to build a heavy duty 60"×34" desk... maybe 60x40. I measured from my nose to screen and its only 31". I feel i can see the screen better without moving my head at 40".
I liked this video (and clicked like), and I think you did a great job. Tiny complaint: scrubbing through, the video was mostly of you. I had to carefully time a pause to look at the desks for more than 5 seconds.
My standing desk set up cost lil over 100, i got a 72" table top from work( they change out to standing desks) and were tossing out the old table tops, i got the cheapest standing desk frame from amazon for $94 2 large plastic conduit for $9, and a serge preptector with usb ports for $12,
Love the table top, I bought one from Home Depot but I like the color of your Table Top, could you let us know what paint you use ? as well as the protector? Thank you!! @BigE
Yeah we have ikea in Dublin here. Wanted the karlby top but they only have the longer version available so had to pay €50 delivery for the shorter version. Cant even click and collect 😂 also you cant get the black drawers in ireland so gonna have to paint mine black. Some hassle for the setup I want
Awesome guide. I wish I would've gone with a butcher block when I was building mine over COVID. I went with a hardwood unfinished door as my tabletop and put some elbow grease into it along with some 2x4 and 4x4 legs/frame. It may look off, but it would survive anything short of a nuclear blast 😂
Find it hilarious that I am currently trying to find a desk and the first few clips about the "horrible" desk thats cheap and non-durable is exactly what I am using right now...
If you had no money, don’t mind the looks. just build a table with angle steel. Super durable, impossible to shake it. Not joking almost like a brick. my 200x70 table cost me 100$ with tabletop
The arozzi gaming desk is the best one imo I’ve had one for like 8 years. The entire desk mouse pad is amazing. It’s easy to clean and it’s not super expensive for the desk. It’s one of the best options out there IMO
CAN YOU DO A REVIEW OF THE Unikito U Shaped Computer Desks, Reversible Office Desk with LED Strip and Power Outlets, L Shaped Table with Full Monitor Stand and Storage Shelves, 83 Inch Large U- Shape Gaming Desk, Black Oak
Hi, can you pls explain the term butcher block? im norwegian and gonna make me a new setup, and i just want to know what this is. is it like massive wood countertop? what sort of wood is recomended? as i know some are soft. i know oak is a nice collor for me, but how is that wood compared to say walnut?
As far as the sit/stand desks go, I think you may be missing the ergonomics behind them. You are not meant to stand all day, as you had said. The idea is that neither is a good thing to do all day, but doing both helps to increase circulation, better your posture, and just overall make you feel better throughout the day when you have to slog in front of a computer your whole life. I'm guessing that, since you are talking about gaming, it's a voluntary thing and you may be looking for a seated desk with a super comfy chair.
What tabletop did he go with? Looks like its 3ft wide and thats what i need. Cant find a 3 foot wide top. I run a 48in c1 oled so i need to sit back atleast 3ft away. Any ideas? Thanks
