Totally agree! I had three Golden Retrievers while I had kids in the house. Exceptional and loving with kids. Super easy to train. Now that my kids are grown up, I have a fairly high drive working line wet German GSD. Totally fun to train and work, but as you say, a bit of spicy meatball...hahaha
For me, I can never not have a working line GSD. But this is a video many people should see. They often get what they WANT, not what they NEED or can manage. And sadly the dog suffers from a bad match bc the human can't be honest with themselves.
Love my young gsd, I was fortunate to have a brother who had a working boy, so I got to see what to expect. Only took the plunge 2 years ago once I retired. So much fun and no buddy pesters me...can I pet your dog...🤣
This was a great video, and not what I was expecting considering the breeds of dogs that you normally feature here (for good reason) lol. I love the videos you've put out where you talk about your experiences with other breeds.
As golden retriever breeder of 15 years, a dutchie owner, and a member of your Elite Group, just knowing who you are, I absolutely love how much you love goldens. ❤
Great video. I for one appreciate your Honesty and Sincerity on this topic. Notwithstanding this topic is counter productive to your Business you praise the benefits of the Golden Retriever as a great Family pet. I doubt that there are many similar breed trainers and breeders would do this. I am confident having watched many of your videos you are very Honest and confident and would not suggest anything more than anyone could handle based on Family information provided. Ron
I agree, have had 2 of these guys. First one was more field golden, more drive for sure than second fella. Easy to train but you need to train them. Such an asset to have it kids growing up. As a single mom wo did 12 hour shifts, I was so happy to have my Goldie at home for the kids. And they still will alert and bark to let you know if someone is around that is not suppose to be. I learned so much training these 2 guys. So now with my GSD I had some knowledge. I would never been able to handle a gsd pup like my Arko when I had 2 little kids. Retired now and have lots of time to do our work together. Thanks for the great info as always.
Agreed 100% I'm a trainer out of New Hampshire USA . Goldens are everywhere up here .I train them as family dogs all the time. Definitely easy as can be. I always look forward to working the GSD because there my favorite and are a bit more far between. I love the challenge and sass and personality that comes with having a German Shepherd or Mali.
Haz, I don't think you curtailed ANY business or sales with this video. Good job by the way. Generally speaking, people that want a happy go lucky social dog like a Retriever don't want the edge that comes with a protective breed and people that want that protective edge know that a Retriever isn't going to fulfill that requirement though they may have plenty of love for the breed. I've seen plenty of cute videos of people that own both & I get it, but for me, the only thing better than one GSD is two GSDs ...or a GSD & a Mal...or a GSD & a Rottie ...though I'm likely to stick with 2 GSDs given the opportunity. Disclaimer: I currently own a pure breed Working Line "Family Baby" & a GSD/Setter mix ...the latter is insanely intelligent & wily but afraid of her own shadow.
When we picked out our Golden, I followed Haas on how to pick out a puppy, and I couldn’t be happier. He is not scared of noise like my other dogs were, and he confronts everyone that comes to the house. No fear. Thanks Hass
Haz why would I want to dis agree with you. I know that no one is perfect but your a very smart and intelligent man and people out who think that your wrong sometimes then they just have to rethink on what they want to say. All I can say is I enjoy watching your RU-vid channel and I really enjoy and learn a lot from you. Keep up the great work buddy!!
My best dog was a yellow lab born blind. The dog we have now is a handful but so far we have delt with most of his issues accordingly. The biggest thing is the tremendous amount of energy he has
My current dog is an Australian Cattle Dog and my old dog was a Labrador. The Cattle Dog is is hands down better trained because he fucking had to be! lol I always tell people that think my Cattle Dog is cool the amount of work that goes into keeping him balanced, and how little work the Lab was. The more you know!💫
Nailed it! Great video! I really admire your training and the working dogs you put out…but let’s face it, most families could not handle that kind of intense dog. They think they do because it looks so cool….but it’s a lot of work. I love your honest opinion. My favorite thing about you (your videos) is your honest love of dogs coming through!!! You don’t even realize you are giving them strokes of affection while you are talking to us…..sweet dogs or the working ones. Keep it up…keep training and keep preaching!
I always advise people to get either a retriever or a lab. The only problem with those breeds is not actually the dog but the human that's attached to them and has only had that breed. I'm in the UK and almost every time I am out with the dogs I work with I bump into one and they look at every dog owner who is having trouble with their dogs with this look of contempt. Because how can you possibly go wrong!!😊
My English lab/retriever is so smart this channel has done wonders ❤ My dog loves to learn and work and it helps direct her dominance for both of our benefit. She can beer me Throw things in the trash Collect my laundry Focus heel is amazing This channel is 💯 She’s Grand champion bloodline, I know people don’t care for it but bloodline matters IMO Just turned 1 years old and rockin 🐶 Appreciate your help friend ❤
Spent my life always having a German shepherd. I’d always recommend them to anyone. Getting my first mal after spending life with gsds, LMAO. Amazing dog, amazing energy. Amazing everything. But the amount of work is something you can’t believe until you see for yourself.
Considering every family is getting a doodle …what they want is a Standard Poodle in teddy bear clip . Truly Non shedding and hypoallergenic goofy with a sense of humour…smart and easy to train…and unlike a lab or a golden.. very context aware and will alert bark instead of greeting trespassers. Amazing context awareness that the golden and lab lack. We have an apricot standard poodle that we keep in a teddy bear clip and everyone thinks he’s a doodle.. even doodle owners. He’s great with the kids and when people come near property he’s an excellent watch dog. More protective than the lab or golden. But still east to handle .Very interesting breed and almost human like in their thinking. Our next dog will be a GSD or bouvier but I would recommend the Standard poodle from a reputable breeding if you want a stable and confident dog that’s fun loving and goofy as a family dog …over a doodle any day. As a first time dog owner.. Haz has really set up great structure for training my dog and it will come in handy when get a more guardian like breed in the future
A good part field bred golden is truely the perfect family dog for a family, drivey enough for hobby sport and kids and not to much "dog" for a nonworking family...
There is a Golden Retriever in my pups class and he is actually very aggressive! You can catch him baring his teeth at his owner. The owner told me he used to rip her arms up as a puppy. He does great with the trainers😂... He has issues with his owner. He doesn't get aggressive like my GSD or Rottie... He's more laid back.
I had the same thing happen to me but I was new to the breed and I tried to even just make her a decent family pet and yes she was American show line but with having a child I couldn’t trust the dog even after 6 months of hard work and she had no drive and had periods of time where it seemed she was off in lah lah land . And her mood changed in wired ways and she had a huge overbite . I found her a new home because a nervous dog is not good or trustworthy around children . I did my research and watched videos and your channel and got a well bred working line GSD . He is awesome and I work him daily and I am now getting into after obedience either sent training or Shutzhund. He is safe and stable around and even watches my daughter and plays and has a very outgoing nature strong ball drive and very willing to work . But he has a nice off switch witch is. Nice for a starter dog for me and our daughter. Thanks for this video there are to many backyard breeders producing ( dangerous dogs ) meaning nervous, unstable , mentally challenged dogs just to make money .
I would agree with you, however breeding is a factor, like you said. The amount of Goldens, labs are high on the bite list here in America. Whether that's due to backyard breeding or no training, I lean toward bad breeding. It's sad, because you're correct, they're awesome family dogs. Another great video!
Agree that they are one of the easiest dogs. Labs are as well, however I have seen over the top energy in red labs and in a few goldens that I think would rival my malinois but overall goldens are great dogs. Always appreciate the honesty!
Siblings, Catahoula hound dog and Rottweiler cross. NOT for city life! Super smart, HIGH energy and Demand training. They love to be vacuumed....by training! Great watch dogs, of course. 80 acres to roam.... But they stay close all the time due to Rottweiler traits. Your videos have been helpful, thanks.
Haz, I just watched your video on Golden Retriever’s, I have a English cream retriever that and Excuse my wording, but he’s always up my butt! There isn’t a thing I can do without him being right there on me, in front of me, tripping me etc…He just isn’t giving me any space. What can I do to stop some of this behavior?
I train Beagles and have for years now. Coyotes are a big problem for Beagles when running. They are so focused on the rabbit track that they don't know when a coyote is around. Could a person train a working line of dogs like a German Shepherd to protect Beagles from a coyote attack? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
As far as I heard training a bernese is quite a work, as they obey but you might need to wait minutes before they do. Regarding the other 2, I’m not familiar with how to train. On the other hand there are 4 types of bernese: appenzeller, mountain, great swiss and entlebrucher mountain version.
Just remember people that a beautiful Purpose Bred Golden (as this pup appears to be) requires daily grooming. Plus regular trips to a groomer. They also shed. A LOT!! And you will be vacuuming daily! But, that said, any pup from a Purpose Bred breeder is an amazing dog.
Why do they need to go to a groomer ? Growing up we had a Golden Retriever and had him for 13 years and yes they DO SHED , a lot and need regular grooming but ours never once went to a groomer.
My chocolate lab is a nightmare 😅 Horrible genetics. Hates people, resource guards, gets shitty with one of the other dogs in the house.. I truly think if she went to the average family, she'd be a major bite risk. But I have experience with dog aggression in gsd and malinois. Still a pain, but not the end of the world...I found her breeder after I rescued her and the breeder has a ton of temperament complaints. I've done a lot of work with her and she's doing much much better, but my next dog I'm getting from a good breeder with good genetics.
I've had Rottweiler's for 18 years and I'm now the proud owner of a working GSD.... hands down we've been attacked more times over the years by Retrievers and Labs than any other dog breed. My new puppy has been bitten twice by them so far. I now wear a body camera for legal evidence should I need to use force to protect my dog. Dog walks have always been hard work and not enjoyable for me. With the labs they're all been black. Can you tell us more what the problem with black labs is?
What about giant schnauzers? I’ve been looking for a dog that is a visual deterrent but still family friendly. Was thinking GSD, Giant Schnauzer, or Bull Mastiff (a little bit too much drool, though)
Fun Fact: The first face transplant was performed on a woman who was bitten by a Golden Retriever. I'm not saying they're bad dogs, it's just a fun fact.
