I use Neutrogina Anti Residue shampoo. I've been using it for about four months and even though its not marked as a dreadlock shampoo, I love it. Definitely recommend it. Its only about 6 dollars too, which is nice.
I've been using Dr. Bronners liquid soap for the past 8 months and it is the soap that works best for me. I had hard water during the summer and didn't notice any problems with a deep clean every month. I then put in a water softener and its winter and I'm still very satisfied with the product (I've been neglecting deep cleans to like once every 2 months), especially because you can get different scents and that it can be used for everything... Brushed my teeth with it many times... Its made out of oils so its a semi conditioner in my opinion, gets rid of the oils from my head but leaves my hair nice and knotty. I also use a blow dryer on medium heat, in case that may make a difference for whoever reads this.
I use the BIG Shampoo from LUSH - it contains see salt that really helps my roots to lock up better instead of coming out shiny and straight ^^ I would recommend it although it's pretty expensive because you only need a very very tiny amount of product and should dilute it. ;-)
Home Made Shampoo - Baking soda, lemon juice, salt water. I've used it since I've had dreads, and it works great ! Hope you all are satisfied. :D If too dry, take out the salt and lemon juice.... or keep them (they're good for dreads) and add essential oils to help with dry dreads. Good luck !:D
Yeah definitely ! Dr Bronners is super cheap.... but Baking Soda is cheeper... haha And please do add some oils, you don't need much... but your hair will thank you for it :)
Wow, thanks for the idea ! I HAVE to try the GSE one day, but if you can... give me a little insight on what it's good for (hair wise) and how often to use the grapefruit seed extract. :)
I would deff reccomend Lush's shampoo bars! They last freaking forever and they have lovely dandruff ones and a shampoo for every type. AND it's all home made, natural and cruelty free!
I was just about to ask and see if anyone else had tried them on dreads yet!! Thank you, I'm definitely going to go buy one now. (Although my dreads are only a few days old so I'm not sure if sill be able to use it just yet!).
I use a mixture of things that work great for me and I have I guess hard water living in south Louisiana. I put everything in a 32oz bottle I use 2 part Dr. Bronners unscented to 20 parts water, 4tbsp apple cider vinegar, I mix sea salt, tea tree, lavender, and rosemary essential oils, shake it well wait for it to settle then I fill the rest of the 32oz bottle with Alaffia Authentic African black soap unscented. Then I skake it a bunch to mix it well and the sea salt likes to settle at the bottom so before each use I shake it and I've been using it for a month or a little more idk and for me it's awesome.
I use the solid shampoo bars from Lush and I love them! I tried several 'dreadlock' shampoos and did not feel like my hair was ever fully clean until I started using the Lush bars. I also use Head & Shoulders 2 in 1 once every 2 months or so when my hair/scalp needs a bit of moisture. For reference, I live in the LA area (so I'm not really dealing with extreme hot, cold or humidity) and have naturally straight, regular 'oiliness' hair :)
Good video! As someone with super super oily hair, I had to learn that finding the right shampoo/wash was a bit of a journey. I tend to gravitate towards good old fashioned baking soda, although I still have to be careful to use just the right amount because even that will build up on my hair (it's quite magnetic apparently). I've also used Dr. Bronners, but I can't use it regularly because I find it builds up super quickly on my hair.
CatLadyCan same!!!!!! I can’t use brinners at all because it builds up right away. I need something works and I’m panicking now because I am out of shampoo and my head is so itchy! I got my dreads 3 weeks ago. What do you use now? Same stuff?
Great video and all so very true! Six years of dreads and I'm still learning, half the time I live in a soft water area and a very dry winter, the other half, hard water and damp air! I keep defaulting to Dr Bronner's Green Tea Liquid Soap because I like my shampoo to foam, but for me it's a happy balance between a good powerful shower, the right shampoo and the right time between each deep cleanse!
Had dreads for 14 months and have used the same shampoo from the beginning. Dr Bronners Peppermint Liquid Soap. I went through stages of worrying about it because I wasn't liking the results of washing but I think I wasn't washing out the shampoo well enough. Since then i've moved to a place with very soft water and have unlimited water supply to use so washing has never been better. I use 2 teaspoons of it, however having heard you only use half a teaspoon of your shampoo i'll try and cut down on the amount I use and try and notice any differences for better or worse. I think it can off putting when looking at the price for dread soaps because they seem really overpriced but the reality is that they last sooo long that you're actually getting a super good value and actually saving money compared to how often you'd be buying normal hair shampoos. Also looking forward to doing my first deep clean to see if there was any residue hiding.
I have been using tresemme purify and replenish deep cleanse shampoo for 6 months. It gets rid of my flakes and oil and leaves no residue. It also leaves it softer and more moisturized without detangling or conditioning it a lot and I wash once every 3 days. It feels like my dreads get tighter and neater after each wash too :) good stuff, only $5ish and you can pick it up at walmart. 32 Fl Oz and it has lasted me about 5 months and I use probably a little bit more than I should each wash ;)
I use Hydrating and TeaTree Mint Shampoo. Sulfate free this works wonders. Not so dry and not to moist. On my scalp.they look beautiful. I wash my hair once every two months. Depending if my scalp is not itching .
I'm actually triying a sample of the relatively new solid shampoo from lush called montalbano, and I'm loving it. It cleans my dreadlocks so well and leaves the knotty and tighter feeling that you have when you swim in the sea. I used to have this feeling (far less powerful) with seanik and jumping juniper, but with montalbano this effect is multiplied, almost like swimming in the sea. I think that maybe it is due to the amount of lemon that contains... Thank you for your videos! :)
Awesome, thanks! I really want to try that too since it's vegan and cruelty free. Have you tried the tightening spray? I wonder if that actually works or just hinders the locking process like wax
I live in a place with hard water and find I have to use extra soap and it takes longer to rinse out as he mentions. I also have the grapefruit flavor. If leaves my locks sticky and residuey sometimes so I'm searching for an alternative. It also doesn't help with my dandruff like Id hoped.
Not everyone can use a tiny amount of shampoo. I couldn't, because my hair is just so incredibly thick that I barely got it all over my head by using a smaller amount. I did that for several months after putting in my first set and when I took them out thirteen months later, the back of my head (the part that got the least amount of soap) was really yuckie :-( I just put in my second set about two days ago and I'm trying out different shampoos that I'm hoping will last me a good while. I would have added in that the amount of shampoo used during a wash varies from person to person depending on thickness of their hair.
I got my dreads 1 month now, been washing with T gel for my dandruff problems, but it really tangles up my dreadies. Looking for something new now, but a lot of dreadlock shampoos aren't available for my country. What do you think of the Aveda's rosemary & pepermint shampoo? It's not specifically for dreads but the ingrediënts look good and I've heard from some people they had a great experience with them.
I've been using DreadHeadHQ's liquid shampoo for a while now, actually. The last time I ran low, I tried to order up some RockinLocks shampoo, but he was sold out, and I didn't have time to research, or attempt to make my own. Problem being, I've been having a bad dandruff issue for months now, and I can only assume it's the shampoo since I generally have pretty oily hair.
Im using Dr. Bronners peppermint at the moment. I diluted it extremely. I like it but want to try something new as ive had it for the life of my dreads (9 months) I used just baking soda and water for the first 3 or more months.
I use knotty boy all purpose bar shampoo. I like the patchouli love scent, it smells awesome. It works really well for me. It's $10 per bar, but last me like three months even tho my dreads are pretty long. They have another bar that is better for young dreads, but I'm in love with the patchouli, so I'm staying with it.
So Today makes the first day with my dreads. I did them last night. I want to wash my hair but I’m scared that they’ll just wash out if you know what I mean..? Should I just wait? What should I do!?! 🤔☹️✌🏼🌸
I alternate between the Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo from Trader Joes and the Plantlife soap bars. The shampoo contains salt so it can be drying and the bars seem a bit too moisturizing so switching between them is what works for me.
Hey man I started my locks almost 2 months ago and I live in washington state so it rains a lot and i have straight hair is there any shampoo you would reccomend to get it on the dryer side?
"Grönsåpa" green pine-soap. It's originally made as a household cleaner. For cleaning surfaces as well as washing carpets, things like that. Works like a charm!
Cheap-ass Herbal Essences Tea-lightfully Clean Clarifying shampoo does the trick for someone like me, with very fine, naturally slippery, oily hair. Every once in a while I'll do a quick rinse with ACV to bring back the shine, and, add some moisture. So far, so good!
Hey dude, been loving your vids and just recently got my dreads a few days ago so I'm planning on washing them within the next week.. I live in the UK as well and noticed that rocking locks still haven't added more stock on their website so any chance u could recommend something else UK based to use for now?? Really don't wanna fork out on p&p atm..
ThaCrazedOne That shampoo is no longer produced. Super Dreads make and sell dreadlock soap and shampoo within the UK - otherwise Dreadstuff, based out of Sweden have an extensive range of options.
Lazy Dreads Ah right okay :/ well thanks for the recommendation of Super Dreads! I didn't come across their stuff when I was searching so I'll give that a go.. It really would be awesome if u can finish that directory for products btw man cuz it does get really confusing when you're trying to find shampoos etc from companies u can trust
ive just ordered like a week ago the Dr bronners one but ive used bar soaps til now and i found it helfull for the locking prossec because your rubbing your dreads for like 2 minutes, but it leaves you with a lot of residue (i hope thats how you spell it) whice leads to deep clean every month so for the first 6 months or so bar soaps are helpfull thanks for the video!
I'm currently using Dr. Bronner's lavender bar soap. I have had dreads for about a year and half. Still haven't figured out what works for my hair. My hair has always had excess oil, so I'm nervous about using anything that has coconut oil, or any other natural oil that adds a oil content to your hair. Castile based soaps aren't drying my hair out enough, or maybe its to much... so my hair is over producing oil. I honestly can't tell. Can you help? In your video you said shop around, but in another video you were using dreadheadhq's soap. Have you ever tried Knotty boys bar soap? Oh and I'm moving to South Korea in two months...so I'm looking for products that are easy to buy and ship overseas. Thanks!
Emily Klein I encourage people to try different options until they find what works for them - a shampoo that works perfectly for me may produce poor results for someone with a different hair type, or someone with different scalp requirements, or for someone in a harder water area. In one of the dreadlocks washing videos I have a DHHQ soap - as even while 'shopping around', you still actually need to have at least one soap around, at the time of filming that one I had DHHQ, and I've had around 6 others since then. My experience with Knottyboy was with their bar soap - I found it to be very painful if/when it gets in/near my eyes.
could you use main n tail shampoo? I've only did my rip and twist on Jan 28 and been looking up shampoos so I can wash them with a week from now. just truing to get ideas. please help
I'm in need of serious HELP again!! I need a dread shampoo to get rid of my dandruff! Are there any shampoos that are more moisturizing? I used Dr. Bronner's once and it dried out my scalp! :( please help!
I'm just baffled with my hair right now. I already have shampoo that is perfectly balanced for my hair all year round, but all, with the exception of 4 dreadlocks, have fallen out. In the past, my hair has always locked up very easily, so I don't understand why they all just fell out within the first month. I came here wondering if I need to switch shampoo, like having oils or something like that in there would make the hair slip past each other and fall out. I'm considering going into a hair place and getting my dreads done professionally this time to see if they would stay. The four that I have left are currently falling out and I am devastated.
Recommendations for brand new dreads? The last time I had dreadlocks I used Knotty Boy but I'm seeing that it leaves a good amount of residue. I will be using a sea salt spray to tighten but still want to avoid oils while they are so young. Thanks.
Madison Herring how long have you had your locs? mine were established 11-2-2016 and I started out with Shea Moisture products but Now I alternate between Shra Moisture, Dr. Locs & DollyLocks! my hair gets used to products fast and starts acting weird. lol! finally found my regimen and I'm soooo happy as well as my hair! by the way I have ethnic fine hair so the products work all all dreadlocks, locs, dreads, etc. even braids! loving this journey and learning a lot. less is more! continued luck on yours! by thy he way I LOVE sea salt sprays! especially dollylocks and the beach babe sea salt, sea kelp and aloe texture spray. I try to stick with all natural, organic, vegan products but that one is a WONDRRFUL Alternative 8oz for $4.99-$6.99 found at your local ulta, Walmart, Walgreen's etc.
RoyalButterfly Vaper They are a little under 2 months old. I have been using Dollylocks and I don't think I'm going to switch. I only use it while they are young and irritating my scalp and will probably switch back to just water washing with deep cleans. The Dollylocks one seems to soothe my scalp while still keeping my hair locked but still nice and soft. And the best part is it washes right out, no extra squeezing. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try them out if this seems to stop doing the trick.
Hey! So iknow you've said before to choose a shampoo that's residue free, but do you think a shampoo made up of nothing but earthly things that has a sent from the mixture of essential oils and flowers/plants to be dreadlock friendly? It leaves behind little suds and only has glycerin and citric acid in it, including the essential oils, flowers and all natural things from the earth. And to be alittle more clear, its called Calia.(8
Livi Puente I couldn't say - it's perfectly possible to have a shampoo comprised of long chemical sounding ingredients that washes out perfectly well... and also possible to have a shampoo comprised of completely natural ingredients that is over conditioning and non-residue free. While many will choose to only use natural soaps and shampoos, it's not a guarantee that it'll work well.
So our water has a very high iron content. Like having a bath looks like dense lucozade. So makes me thing that washing dreads with our water would be a bad idea
I don't mean to ask an obvious question, but I am very curious.. I have recently acquired partial dreadlocks. My question is if using a baking soda recipe will be an effective "shampoo' for dreadlocks. Are there effective diy shampoos for dreadlocks?
Bella Mildew Some will use various baking soda based recipes for washing their hair with. I personally find it a little more drying than a shampoo/soap so it might not be the best choice to use by itself on partial dreads. I'm afraid I do not really have any experience with making anything up myself.
my young dreads are a day old and haven't washed my hair in a REALLY long time. Close to a decade. It seems the preferred method to have a wash every now and again with dreads. So, zooming down the comments below, i'm going to try dollylocks. Not really sure what to expect at all as I can't remember what it was like to wash hair... so first round for everything.
QUESTION: I am considering dreadlocks but i am sketchy on the fact of washing them. Youve stated multiple times how you are able to wash dreads and for starting young dreads you should wait to wash at least 5 days at a time until they get tight enough but when they mature how often are you able to wash them (ive been told every two weeks but that doesnt sound right) and how do you avoid smell also i am in a band so i tend to jump around and get sweaty so how does that also affect a wash cycle. Last question ive heard of dreadlocks breaking so any advise on that?
arozen45 My dreadlocks are over 7 years old. I've washed them every 2nd - 3rd day for pretty much the entire 7 years. You avoid smell in the same way that you avoid anything smelling - you wash them, you keep them clean - if they seem like they need cleaning, then clean them.Dreadlocks are only going to break if they're damaged - if you don't damage them, you won't break them - it's hair.
Jamie Cortez Well they're not going to be finished rope-like dreadlocks on day one - they take months and months to lock properly... however there's obviously a line between messy and just a mess ^^ You'll just have to see how they hold up.
I want to start my dreads with the twist method, but I haven't used shampoo for about a year I wash my hair with clay and methi will this influence on the formation of my dreads?
I'm almost 2 years into my journey and so far have found 3 that I love and recommend. DreadlockShampoo.com is my favorite! I love theVitalGoods.com and Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo from Trader Joes. I have tried the baking soda wash with ACV rinse and it dried my hair out horribly.
Hey man , I just started my dreads a couple days ago but the dreads in the backs of my head look like normal hair even know there I knots in it, is this something to worry about
Jai Coleman If it comes out completely the hair will still knot over time... but it won't form in the sections you made if those sections have completely washed out.
i miss my dreads i had to take them out cause my hair was too short and not locking up properly so i took them out *sigh i miss just getting up in the morning and walking out the door, but i really dont miss it taking 2 hours to dry with a hairdryer
Awkward High Some may find that to be an adequate solution... I personally find that after a few washes with just bicarb by itself my scalp becomes irritable as bicarb alone does not correctly balance my hair/scalp. A full bicarb and ACV soak for every wash would thoroughly wash my hair without discomfort or irritation... however it takes much longer and costs more than just using a dreadlock shampoo for me.
Let me give you guys a tip based on my personal experience: do not use Dollylocks shampoos if you have hard water. I didn't even have locks that time and it left my hair so sticky and oily that I had to wash it with dish soap. I've recently bought two soap bars at Dreadlocks shampoo & Bucks County Soap Co. that promises to work great even in hard water. We'll see in a few days. Wish me good luck.
Hello there, man too bad I just found out about the giveaway now :( what a shame to miss it :( During high school and university I kept my hair at/below shoulder lenght and from what I've experienced, most of the shampoo brands available here (syoss, nivea, h&s, DM etc) are... processed rubbish - at least compared to 'less enhanced' shampoos. Therefore I've decide to go 'natural' and settled with Nettle shampoo even before I got dreadlocks. Any experience/opinion on basic (nettle, camomile, birch, mint) shampoos? They all have no sign of conditioners and I had bad luck trying to find anything more suitable for dreads. The few people with dreadlocks I know use apple vinegar or baking soda to wash their locks. //edit: I forgot to mention that my dreads are just partial, got 26 of them around the head and loose hair at the top (leaving it to dread naturally)
Khastyanify Shampoo experiences will differ from person to person - what works for one won't necessarily work for another. I however have never used Nettle shampoo so I couldn't say either way ^^
Hey Christian! I have a question. I want dreads so bad. I love the idea and love the look, however, my dad says I can't get them because of reasons he won't tell me. He said not until I move out. I'm 17 and I can't wait that long :((
Try sitting down with your dad and talk it over. Don't argue just try to be polite and ask about his reason, he's an adult and should be able to discuss - you're becoming a grown man/woman and as well should stand behind your ideas.
I use the cheapest shampoo ever from the supermarket, it makes my hair soft and it makes my dreads knot up verry good, i've used this shampoo for 2,5 months now and im verry satisfied. (Its from a dutch supermarket called albert hein)
No one asked why I wouldn't recommend it. Interlocking involves passing the body of the dreadlock back through it's own root - this splits the root and twists the two halves. This process is then repeated at 90', and at 90' again etc. Splitting and twisting a dreadlock root leaves it unable to naturally lock and so to keep the dreadlocks growing out locked they will need to be interlocked again and again every time there is a significant length of new growth. The passing of a dreadlock through it's own root risks damaging root hairs that can lead to dreadlocks growing thinner overtime and the tight twisting at the root risks traction alopecia - which can again lead to dreadlocks becoming thinner over time as well as thin patches developing between the dreadlocks. While interlocking is a common and popular method, I do not personally recommend methods or maintenances that I believe to be potentially damaging to other people's hair - So while I wouldn't stop someone from interlocking their hair, I would not be comfortable making the recommendation.
Can't i just use regular soap for this aim? I read somewhere that you can make your own mixture to clean your dreads? Will that work? Can i just get a regular Shampoo which contains Aloe Vera or Apple Cider Vinegar? Does hot/cold water matter? Research grinned from: ragingrootsstudio.com/shampoos-soaps/
blackram223 There are obviously thousands and thousands of 'regular' soaps out there and some will be better/worse than others, but bnfortunately as regular soaps are generally not designed with dreadlocks in mind they will often be very difficult to effectively rinse out from the dreadlocks and can lead to small amounts of soap residue slowly building up overtime inside the dreadlocks. Having a soap that contains Aloe Vera or Cider Vinegar will not in itself guarantee it works out. With regards to hot and cold water... it can take quite a while to properly rinse dreadlocks and so you'll probably want to be using hot / warm water.
But is it that important to have no residue, because i can't find any dreadlock shampoos/soaps or whatever, i have no dreads at the moment and i am trying to grow my dread by the neglect way and the best option i had was a random body milk with aloe vera, would that work?
I can list you many shampoos that have worked for me... but you might find they don't work for you and your hair, water or skin... so that would also be unhelpful :p
could you use main n tail shampoo? I've only did my rip and twist on Jan 28 and been looking up shampoos so I can wash them with a week from now. just truing to get ideas. please help
