How long should you wait before you give new dreadlocks their first wash? www.lazydreads.com lazydreads lazy_dreads www.zazzle.co.uk/lazydreads Music - Kristin Burdal - www.KristinBurdal.com
Question... I have 2 month young dreads... I always color my hair..I know the washing can be rough on young dreads... If I just do my roots is that going to ne to much on my roots..
My dreads are 1-3 days old (took my from wednesday to friday to do them lol) and this video was so helpful!! I just gotta say, you have amazing skin! I was almost distracted by it!
2023 - great video; it help to trained my scalp before I get locks. Now I'm turn one month and the transition was smooth and easy. Thank you so much for this invaluable knowledge! I wish you the best and a happy life. Sláinte from Mexico!
I’m so glad I watched this i literally just washed for the first time after 6 days and they got super frizzy and kinda loose so I got scared and started crocheting them too be tight again than stumbled upon this video and now I’m so much more understanding the frizz is normal as for the little loose hairs
I've just started putting small dreads in my hair after dying and washing it last night and I was very curious about how often to wash them. Luckily, I wash my hair maybe once or twice a week, sometimes longer because I have no motivation whatsoever so I should be okay. This video was really helpful so thank you :)
Thank you so much. My dreads are just over a 1 month old. You answer every question I needed answered. I wash my hair every 7-10 days. I never really washed my hair a lot in the first place. I have naturally coarse, curly, frizzy hair. So it's about what I washed it to begin with. The Frizz is horrible at this point. I thought man it seems after I wash my hair my dreads are a lot loser and falling out, but this video was point on and helped me so much. Thanks for taking the time do help people like me with their questions.
Thank you for taking the time to make all your videos! You are easy to watch/listen to, and I appreciate that you explain some of the "science" behind why hair does what it does. Keep up the good work!
I never liked videos where people are talking too much BUT your video is super informative - things that makes sense. Thank you for your awesome knowledge.
i waited for 6 days and i wash my hair once per week! i got dreads my dreads 3 weeks ago and they looks a bit messy but they will come together within a year as you say i hope! =) thanks for this video!
I just did my first wash 4 days after starting my new short hair (3 inches) backcombed dreads. I used a hair net while getting my hair wet, then remove it to apply/massage a teaspoon of dreads shampoo on my scalp and then, placed back during rinsing. So far soo good, baby dreads still on and the best of all, is that is was able to stay under the water and relax for a while, without worrying too much about my young dreads falling apart. Best feeling ever after the first wash!
I have not washed my hair with shampoo for about 3 and a half months now, instead i have used cider vinegar and salt water. My hair and head is a lot healthier than it has ever been and dreading is easy, even though my hair is only 5 inches.
I just washed my dreads after contemplating whether I should not and they look great! I didn’t wash my hair for 2 months before dreading it then continued for another 2 weeks. This video was a good push of faith
I myself did not change my hair washing routine. I have naturally curly hair anyway and using a residue free shampoo as u have suggested in the past, I wash my youngins once or twice a week.
I had no idea it's normal for young dreads to loosen n get all frizzy after a wash, I thought it was something I was doing wrong. I'm so glad, I was just about to take em out thinking I failed. lol
The sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) may be a bit unbalanced when first starting dreads as I'm now noticing, you are right about setting a pattern. It's like eating and sleeping, patterns create balance.
I just started my dreadlocks, and I just started the itchy phase, from a constant washing routine. Whoops. They’re matting together nicely and look pretty cool though. Thank you for the advice
I got my hair twisted last Sunday (the 5th of February) and I am about to wash it for the first time today (the 13th of February). I am a little wary but from what I am finding online i should be good. Going to have a cap on while i rinse and shampoo them out as I read that that should help keep them in place. Thank you for the video the information was very helpful! 2 and a half year old video so you may not see this but Keep up the good work brother you got one more subscriber now.
I changed my washing to every other day 6 months before I back combed and kept washing the same after I did the back combing. Never changed it up for a week or anything.
I swear this guys a total life saver I haven’t got dreds yet but I’m staring the process this week and my main fear was how the hell do you put these in yourself ( I’ve RU-vidd it and watched about 30 videos I have a good enough idea ) and my other worry was how often do I wash them and honestly I don’t even wash my actual hair once a week so I feel like this is the best decision for me and honestly I can tick it off my bucket list
I do love your videos. I find them very helpful and educational, especially considering I've been getting ready to have my hair dreaded but, I do however have a question. With being a newly "dread head" with getting dreads for the first time, what are you supposed to, or can you do with new growth?
If you have new dreads in your opinion do you think you should tie them back with other dreadlocks use something like the neatlocs or just let them hang loose
Tying them back does not benefit the progress of the dreadlocks, it just benefits you as they are out of the way. Having them down allows them to move and increases the likelihood of knots forming.
I just have to say thank you for taking the time to make all these videos, I am on day 1 (first full day of having my baby dreads) and I am finding your videos so informative and they make me excited for mine to mature! Thanks for the awesome videos!
appreciate you man! just started 4 days in wondering if I should wash them today they knotted pretty good I'm using beeswax to start n I wanna wash it out n put more
Hey Lazy Dreads , I was wondering if the crochet method is a good method to start dreads. I appologise in advance if you've already covered this topic in one of your videos and if you didn't please do. Thanks
Sam DaBam Crocheting is a popular method, there is plenty of crochet info out there, but it's not something that I will cover here because it is a method which carries more risk of hair damage (especially if carried out by someone who is inexperienced) and so it is not a method which I myself am comfortable recommending to everyone.
I have straight hair and did twist n rip method. My dreads are very loose and flat (2 days old) should they be tight when I start them? I tried fixing them with a crochet hook but it doesn't really work because they're basically just messy/frizzy looking braids. Should I start over and do them tighter? Or will they knot up eventually? I'm so confused as to what they should be like to start with..
I made my dreadlocks 4 months ago (twist n rip) and became a little obsessed with crocheting... to the point where most of the hairs have been broken. Nonetheless, they still seem to be holding well. I have been struggling to find the balance between oiliness and dryness, as they tend to sound like straw when I would manually bend them. I have been putting drops of oil on my scalp for a month and a half, previously I was simply spraying them with a distilled water and essential oil mixture. My dreads now have a more natural "swing" to them, although I still find them a bit stiff and potentially dry... I'm scared to wash them and dry them up to the point of their disintegration. The only "wash" I have done was an ACV rinse at the 1 month mark. I don't feel like they are dirty, but I am starting to consider seeing what happens after a wash. Is there a particular concoction that would be gentle to the brittleness of my dreads? Thanks!
+Ciara Collingbourne I would recommend washing them more regularly than only once in four months - they may stop feeling oily after that time, but they will benefit from being washed and a good quality dreadlock shampoo should contain the right balance of ingredients to keep your hair healthy and strong.
totally agree with you my dreads are 5 years old now but I gotta tell u when I got my dreads 5 years ago the lady told me no wash for 6 months ,, I thought I die lol!!!!! thanks been watching ur videos 5 years !!!! great!
Do you recommend using anything to wash new dreads with? Like a hat or something to help them not want to wash out? Going to start my dread journey today. Already have the wash pattern down just want to make sure they won’t wash out on my first wash. But I guess we’ll see how it goes!
Soooo....just saw this video after starting mine a month ago cuz was told wait 8 weeks!!!! So now what is my best option??! The cider vinegar wash or regular dandruff wash?? Because clearly it needs to be washed asap
Was recommended to watch your videos by a friend of yours...so pleased I have, as found them very informative..thank you! I have baby dreadz and my dread journey has just begun. You mentioned that you use essential oils when your hair is feeling dry. Mine is terribly dry after having bleached it a couple of days before dreading(mistake). May I ask which oils you would recommend?
I have very young dreads and I made the mistake of washing my hair quite often in the first week.. I believe the knots may be washing out a bit. Should I just neglect them and hope for the best?
Should you avoid getting them wet the first couple days of new dreads? Also if your not planning on actually washing should you avoiding getting them wet? And what shampoo do you use?
+123mstiffie People will usually wait a week before first washing their dreadlocks. Dreadlocks take a long time to dry, whether you "wash" them or not, and so most will usually avoid getting them wet if they don't plan on actually getting them clean.
You said in your "how-to" videos (on twist/rip and backcombing) that you didn't like to leave in the hair ties (rubber bands, whichever you want to call them) Do you leave them in during the first week? And if so, should you wash with the rubber bands in?
I've been prepping my hair for the last 2 months - I'm able to go 7-8 days between washes (super fine and thin hair) - I also haven't used shampoo or conditioner for over three months. I've been researching and waiting for the best time to do my dreads for over a decade, and it's finally going to happen next weekend! *happy dance* Just wanted to say thanks for all these vids, as they have been entertaining and reinforcing the positive information I have found (ie. not using wax, using baking soda and acv for deep cleans, etc.) online and through other friends that have had dreads. I doubt there is anyone more prepared for this new hair life! Have a great day! :D
Oh... I meant I wash it with not shampoo and conditioner - have yet to find a good soap, so in the mean time, I am using dish soap. I have baby fine hair, so between that and the the lemon juice, I'm trying to get it dread ready. Sorry for the confusion.
No one had a question similar, but I've been growing my hair for about 3 months now(from last haircut) I use a sponge to help my coils.. When I wake up they're almost all gone.. I thought I was supposed to wash less, I'm wondering should I wash more?
So my hair is wavy so that means my hair won't lock up quick as theirs. I'm going for the freeform method and I have stopped combing for about 4 days haven't it in 4 days because I have no shampoo or anything for them, but my real question is, how am I supposed to wash my hair? What should I do while in the shower? How do I work my hair with my hands? Thank you in advanced.
how many times a month do you recommend washing your locks? I'm watching all your videos on how to start my process. they're really informative, but i want to make sure my young locks stay healthy and give them the proper love to develop into mature beautiful locks:) thank you!!!
I know this is a old video and this is unnecessary but, i have been towel rubbing my hair for about two days and i already see progress but will washing my hair destroy the progress
So you recommend waiting at least about a week before giving them the first wash and you also recommend not washing them everyday. When you say "wash" are you only referring to scrubbing with shampoo or do you consider rinsing them to be washing them as well? What I'm getting at is whether or not it's ok just to rinse off your hair every time you take a shower. I wouldn't want to wash them too often and create a bunch of oil build up but at the same time I don't want to walk around with several days worth of dirt and sweat in my hair.
sakecity7 The loosening up will happen whether you use shampoo or not - it's the rinsing and drying that's going to rough up the hair... so if you're refraining from washing, that's going to include rinsing too - rinsing alone provides very little benefit - water alone doesn't clean - it doesn't remove the oils that slow down the progress... so if you're going to get them wet, you might as well at least get some benefit from it and wash them properly.
Lazy Dreads GREETINGS, SALUTATIONS, HELLO! hahaha Right, thats my point; rinsing the hair might not remove the oil but it should remove at least most of the sweat and dirt.
Well... I suppose you'd have to try it and see - in my experience washing them with water alone just leaves the hair feeling more like it 'needs to be washed' after rather than actually feeling like it's benefitted from the rinse. The hair also needs to be dried again after... as drying is by far the most annoying and time consuming part, whether you shampoo them or not... I don't think there is any point in rinsing alone since they will need to be dried anyway. If you're looking to rinse in between the wash days there's also the added risk of issues related to leaving the dreadlocks damp for too long.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-drH4N8quQIs.html I have a shower with an adjustable head so will just tie my hair up above my head and lower the shower head to make sure it's below my hair level. With shorter dreadlocks or a fixed shower head it can become more tricky.
i just recently got dreads about 3 weeks ago, the guy who did them for me, told me to wait about 3-5 WEEKS before i give them that first wash. They also arent very long either. Should i wash them now? I beginning to actually smell them and they are also a bit loose as well. Its auite repulsive but i didn't wanna ruin them. Opinions?
How about getting them wet? Same thing I started them on vacation cuz ocean and saltwater help dreads that I’ve heard but idk when I can get them wet again
I know this is old, but hopefully you'll answer.. I already don't wash my hair to often, maybe every 5 days. My question is can I use dry shampoo on the roots if needed? Like I'm going somewhere and don't have time to wash them? I'm doing a bunch of research before I start my dread journey. I have bangs which aren't gonna be dreaded, so I'll use dry shampoo in that area. Will it cause any problems with the dreads?
Question(s): I am following the neglect method and the first knots have formed but they are not strong cause I ve started just a few days ago. So, if I wash my hair, will these knots be un-tied again? Will they keep being there? What will happen. And should I use a hair drier? And should I wash my hair as often as before starting neglect? Thanks.
I feel a little confused... I will be getting dreads soon, but, I dont shampoo my hair. Havent in months. (No its not greasy). Sooooo I should wash them after a week? Does washing them help lock if they aren't greasy? Like should I use one of those shampoos that like strip your hair of all oils? Should I not rinse new dreads in the shower for a week?
So I already have 3 baby dreads in my hair that I just got 2 days ago do you recommend changing my shampoo completely or can I just wash those 3 with the baking soda paste....
Just from dreads not when I had Afro 10 months thanks I finally can understand what you mean I’m going to wash right now I normally do 3 day but I did like 5 or 7 days today’s not sure I did put a lil oil and your right it buildin up
Lazy Dreads I've been steered so many different ways I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. At that extent it's getting annoying to try and grow dreads. I've been having so many problems trying to keep my new dreads/twists together at the root that I've been too scared to wash them because I think they're going to come out. The person that did them said not to get them wet for a week. Then I can start washing them. My friend said not to wash them cause, for how loose they were, they'd most likely come out so to wait a few months. It's been about 2 months and I haven't washed them and they still loose and bunchy at the root no matter how many time I use my gel and retwist them like I've been instructed to do. What the heck am I supposed to do? And is it best to get a hair dryer to dry them after washing or will any towel do? How do I even go about drying nee dreads so I don't lose them completely? I wish I knew about you way before I started this because I was looking up a lot of stuff before I even got them done and for some reason I never came actiss your videos. That's irritating even more.
I'm currently contemplating getting dreads but I am just unsure of how to properly start, do I just go from using my normal shampoo to using a residue free shampoo to get my hair used to the routine of not being washed or should i just stay with my normal shampoo to get into the routine until I can get my residue free shampoo?
How often should you use the Jamaican locking wax on new dreads and also is it ok to wet the dreads everyday? This is for new dreads in my case… thank you for any help!
Hi Wesley. I would never recommend putting any form of wax on your hair. With regards to washing, it would best to try and avoid wetting them every single day as the act of washing can be rough on immature dreads.
hi, I dont wash my hair with shampoo at all, for about over half a year now, I just wash it with hot water. Should I start washing my hair when I get a few dreads? (not planning on turning all my hair into dreads, just 3-5 dreads maybe for now)
What did your dreadies look like before as fresh baby dreadies to how they look now? Cause I've got about 7 baby dreadlocks so far , and cause I've got loose hair atill it's really awkward to wash , not gettin the rest of my hair dreaded till have the money , but was thinkin of doin a few more myself and then gettin my friend to to the rest of them , as I'm too lazy to do the whole hair myself lol x x x
Question: is it easier for thinner/less wide dreads to lock up and grow faster then thicker/ wider dreads? I have norised that the ones i have that are thicker are alot smother then the thinner ones. Does this affect the growth at all? Thankful for answer
okay, so I got my dreads last friday, its saturday now, so 8days have passed, I have now washed my scalp and dreads... they look horrible :D really frizzy :D my question being: how long untill they will start locking? also mine were done with elastics? which I removed after like 3days.... was that maybe a bad move?
So I created my dread locks yesterday on my own using the back comb method, but I feel as they are too loose at the root & towards the tips. I keep thinking I need to back comb it more lol. As I woke up today with a nest of messy hair & but they are still in shape towards the middle.. Will this be a problem for locking ? Should I back comb more or will they naturally tighten & separate near the roots still?
Hey babe. Been watching your videos like a mad man. Started them by twist and rip. On the 3rd day. I only wash my hair once every 3 to 4 weeks and have been like that for a long long time. As I said in another post I use baking soda, lemon and essential oils to wash and apples cider vinegar and essential oils to condition. Do you think its ok to still wait 3 to 4 weeks or should I go to 2 weeks since they are new? All your videos are aimed to the average person who washes every day or 2. Also is ok to still use apple cider vinegar or will it make it too soft to dread? Lastly, i put no heat on my hair ever... so your drying video lost me at heat ... but while they are new and tiny do u think I can get away with not adding heat?
raddom tutorials Gels, hairsprays and similar products are 'holding' products - they hold the hairs in a certain position for a certain style etc. While it's tempting to use them on dreadlocks to keep the hair 'held' in a more dreadlock-like way, it is not beneficial to the dreadlocks - 'holding' the hair in place stops the hair from being able to form new knots and progress. There may also potentially be issues with washing leftover products back out from inside the dreadlocks.
I just started my new dreads, I got myself into the pattern of washing once a week. My dreads are about a week old and itch pretty badly is it normal? My hair isn't very oily.
@@LazyDreads I started my dreads in September (had my first retwist being of month) and I have a 4c hair texture I haven’t washed my dreads yet,my scalp has mild itching is it time to wash?
i've had dreads for about 1.5 weeks now and i washed them once. Since i washed them they look frizzy messy and looser, but you're comforting me a lot. But iam worried, there is like 1 inch of loose hair. in some dreads theres about 2 inches of loose hair from the roots. Is that bad ? Also the tips keep unknotting, should i tie them with rubber bands or something ?
+Vik Black Just let them be and they'll work themselves out. Don't stress too much. But if it really bother's you, you can fix them up every couple days but I prefer not to so much so the hair can work itself out.
Question: if you sweat a lot like 5days out of the week should you was it more often ? I'm only 4days new in and been outside getting sweaty these last two days should I be washing my hair more often. I have interlocked dreads. Your videos are pretty helpful and interesting keep it up!
Question: How often do you wash your dreads? I wash mine every 5-7 days but I'm not sure if that is enough. I think I should wash them every 3-5 days but since my dreads are only a bit over 5 months old I'm afraid they may come apart. After every wash I seem to have more loose hair and I don't know what to do. I know I must just wait and they will do the work, but still...it's getting annoying.
Jessica GinT Technically you'll find people who believe blow drying any hair is a no-no as the heat is potentially damaging. I however have always used a hair dryer on my hair, you have to weigh up the risks and benefits and dry them in a way that you're comfortable with.
ive watched just about all of your videos in like 2 days, lol. you have helped me tremendously!!!!! you helped me make up my mind about finally doing my dreads
