Keep going. Nice video, Vladimir! Hmmm, this is usually a slavic name and not popular across the world, who gave it to you? I have 2 watches that I completely satisfied: Longines La Grande Classique for dressier look and Hamilton Pan Europe chrono for casual outfits. I also looked at Seiko couple years ago, but bought Hamilton.

I bought my dad the SARB035. It's a great watch for the money. Orient Bambino and the Seiko Cocktail Time are also excellent dress watches under $500. Under $750, the Hamilton Intramatic and the Junghans Max Bill bring a good amount of history and additional pedigree.

Such an underrated watch. I’ve seen guys even some Menswear RU-vidrs wear really expensive watches with cheap shoes and I shake my head. But on the other hand, I think that wearing nice shoes that cost more than your watch such as the SARB035 is ok since it’s just a fine watch that just happens not to cost that much. I’m thinking about a vintage Seiko next either a Lord Marvel or a King Seiko.

Vlad: you are on point with the SARB035! I wish I had pulled the trigger last summer. Now that the watch has been discontinued, it's difficult to find a "new" one for under $800. This was going to be my "milestone" birthday gift from my family. I may have to fall back to the Seiko SZSB011 at $430. If you can pick stocks like you pick watches, you're on your way to a prosperous 2021. Cheers!

Vladimir, I bought a Seiko that looked like a Rectangular Cartier Tank watch Ultra thin ~6 mm for myself, and one for my Dad that was 0.220 inches or ~10 mm thick back in 1968. I was on a business trip to Japan and got them in the duty free shop in Tokyo Airport. The ultra thin one soon actually bent and quit working after about one year, and they quit making them, so no replacement. I then had a Breitling Chronograph for many years, and forgot about my Dad's watch until he passed away in 1989. I started wearing his immediately. I still wear it and it keeps perfect time and is now 52 years old. Plain gold face with rectangular raised marks instead of numbers. You just can't beat a Seiko!

Teddy Baldassarre has a watch channel on YT with entire videos on the best current watches for under $500 in various categories, including dress watches. The Seiko Presage Cocktail Time Blue Martini is an outstanding choice. The Orient Bambino is good, there are severall out there. My personal go-to is a 1968 King Seiko 4502-7113, gold plated, white sunburst dial, 36,000bph Hi-Beat. Amazing, classic style watch on a medium brown leather band.

The Seiko SARB 35 is a great start, but not the only one. Watches are a personal thing, and one of the places a well dress man can really express his personality. Every watch is some combo of classic elegance, sportiness or ruggedness. And depending on the strap/bracelet, you can dress a watch up, or down. I have a collection of vintage watches including a two gold omegas, a stainless Omega bracelet watch (can't swap out a strap), a gold LeCoultre, a gold Hamilton, and a stainless Wittnauer. So any of those will work for special occasions. The thing is, most people these days need a watch that can transition from work with a suit, to evenings out, and more casual attire. Which requires not so much a small dress watch, but an every day watch that will work equally well in most settings. My every day dress watches are 1. Tissot LeLocle Automatic. I struggled finding the right way to wear this watch. The bracelet is OK, not great. For a time, I wore this one on a black leather strap, which was, again, ok. Over the summer I put it on a grey perlon strap. Now, that was cool, and I may go back to that over the summer as perlon straps are super cool . But, I bought a taupe Alligator strap and double deployant, and now this Tissot is probably my #1 every day watch to wear with a suit. You can get this watch for about $400 on Amazon. 2. Tissot PRC 200 quartz chronograph. (not technically a dress watch, but a dressy chronograph that looks great on a strap. You can get this one for less than $350 on Amazon. 3. Omega Dynamic Date automatic - not technically a dress watch, but looks very classy on a strap and is a perfect size for a dress watch, 37 mm. The watch is discontinued. If you really like the simple, military inspired look and feel of this watch, and don't want to search for a used one, I would recommend something like the Sinn 556, the Archimede 39 mm pilot watch, or the Laco pilot watch. 4. Seiko Presage SRPB41 "cocktail time" - striking watch with a blue dial, no lume, and a just a hair oversized for a dress watch at 40 mm. I wear it on a Jubilee bracelet, with gives the watch a Rolex vibe. I might source a blue alligator strap, which will really step up the Presage. You can get these for about $300. 5. JeanRichard Highlands - Not technically a dress watch, but rather a modern field watch that looks vintage. Discontinued. Bead blasted finish, cream dial, and modest sized 38 mm case. Swiss auto movement. Right now, it is on a brown crazy horse leather strap for sort of a casual vibe. Also looks decent on a black, or even green strap, or in summer, a NATO strap or khaki or beige canvas strap. If you like this watch, the closest current thing is something like the Hamilton Khaki field watch, or the Boldr Venture. Both are less than $500 Finally, I will put in a plug for the micro brand Lorier Falcon, which comes stock with a nice brushed stainless bracelet, but can be swapped out for a leather strap. If I didn't already own way too many watches, I would probably buy one of these. These go for $400 direct from their website.

@@v_r_ one more thing. Though I love mechanical watches, I don't know that a dress watch has to be mechanical. I get what you are saying, but honestly, mechanical isn't for everybody. The big advantage of quartz over mechanical is, cheaper, more accurate and no need to set the watch more than maybe once a year. The advantage of mechanical is, if you take care of it and service it, it can run for decades, maybe generations. But, this advantage is more theoretical than actual when you are talking about sub $500 watches since when it comes time to repair or service the watch, the cost of the service will probably cost more than the watch is worth. Quartz cannot be easily repaired, so practically speaking, it is good for 5 to 15 years of use, than you toss it. How long it lasts depends on many factors including how hard you are on watches, if you promptly replace the battery when it dies, and luck. So, 10 years out, you might still be going strong with your quartz while your mechanical will not be keeping good time and will need a $150 to $200 service (or maybe more). 15 to 20 years out, both your budget quartz and budget mechanical are ready for the garbage. Just something to think about. Seiko, Citizen, Bulova all sell some very fine quartz watches that might work better for the person who hates setting his watch, or who needs close to perfect accuracy. One of the knocks on Seiko is, the movements are not always super accurate right out of the box. I have never worried too much about plus or minus 30 seconds a day so long as I know the variance, I just set the watch a little ahead or a little behind and check it once a week or so. But some people hate that and find themselves running to the watchmaker trying to regulate it to chronometer specs. And the bottom line is, you are not getting a certified chronometer retailing for under $500. (though you can find a certified chronometer on sale for that price if you look. ) www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t101-408-11-051-00.html??&pt_source=googleads&pt_medium=cpc&pt_campaign=(ROI)+Shopping+-+Sale+Watches+$100+-+500+(Week%20Back%20Order)&gclid=CjwKCAiA1fnxBRBBEiwAVUouUswl5shpveNDa5zDFWXuu9p2SLHEB643bSP-q58vV8GzWBxotrjXChoCAzsQAvD_BwE

They’re similar shoes so it really just comes down to preference. But I don’t think there’s a wrong answer, just different taste. So if it was me, I would get a pair of black captoe Oxford and a pair of dark brown punched captoe to start.

Great choice with that SARB and Seiko in general. I used to suffer from an extreme case of Swissnosis and dropped huge coin on Blancpain, JLC, IWC etc. A good friend pointed me in the direction of Seiko several years ago, and my skepticism was quickly displaced by admiration. The watches they produce at any given price point are pretty much unbeatable in terms of value. I quickly came to realize that I didn't enjoy wearing my higher end Swiss watches 10 or 20 times more than my Seikos. And a few seconds per day difference had absolutely no practical meeting in my life whatsoever.

@@v_r_ Yes, under $500. I think I paid about $250 or so for mine. It looks like Amazon has it for a bit more, but still under $500, maybe because of decreased supply. (See, Citizen Eco-Drive BL5400-52A). Of course, they have more pricier models, too, but I've had mine now for 5 years with no complaints and lots of compliments. It does violate 2 of your rules though: (1) the case diameter is bigger at 47mm, and (2) it has a metal band. However, I prefer the larger face and metal band for more durability and style. Leather bands tend to wear out and transfer dirt onto clothes easier than metal bands, in my opinion. Another excellent topic. I appreciate your content. Thanks for letting everybody know 'it ain't that serious'. As for the watch, I have the SARB033 (black dial). Liked it more and more the longer I had it. The 6R15D is a robust workhorse for Seiko watches making it excellent for an all occasion watch like the SARB033/SARB035. It's sporty on the bracelet, dressy on leather/lizard/croc. Love this little watch. Also some may consider the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SRPB43. It's just at the size limit (40.5mm) for a dress watch case. However that spectacular dial combined with the case size makes for a stunning time piece for under $400.

The Sarb is great quality for money, but can not compare in quality to say for example the Rolex Explorer or Omega Seamaster Deville, which have far superior movements, finishing and quality control, albeit also way way more expensive. There are also some great Swiss made watches from Tissot and Hamilton in the 38 mm case size and similar price range. Unlike shoes and clothing, watches may be purchased on the "gray market " at a sizable discount. My go to dress watch is a Swiss made Oris Classic. Vintage watches are also an option. I have a vintage circa 1960's Longines which is valued at $ 500.

My every day watch is a Tissot Le Locle that was a gift from my late father. If I were buying a watch right now at this price range I'd consider looking on the open market for sales - Federique Constant, Mido, Certina, Jungans... All of these brands have models that semi-regularly go on sale, that would normally be 6, 7, 800 dollar watches or more, that occasionally fall into that 5-550 price range. And a ton of people sleep on Mido and Certina - take a second look at them if you haven't. If we're talking hard rule absolutely must be under 500 no wiggle room at all I'd buy a Visodate no cap. That is a beautiful watch with the double domed crystal and the vintage styling. Bonus: for absolute budget where 500 is too much to swing, maybe younger guys: get the Orient Bambino small seconds. Not the regular Orient Bambino, though those are nice - but get the small seconds with the champagne dial, you'll love that thing for under 200. Another bonus: if you want to go to the next price tier up, into the $1k, I say Longines hands down for the value to money they're offering right now. Also, I don't wan to sound biased towards Swiss and German ebauche movement watches... I do own and enjoy Japanese watches. This is just what I'd do right now based on where I see the open market prices and what's selling. At the prices they're going for right now I'd avoid the mid-range Seiko watches that still have 7S26 movements in them. The SARBs are incredible but at least last I checked the prices are shifting and availability is also a consideration. If you can find them and at the right price they're incredible watches; Seiko makes a great watch.
