Blain Stenberg I know what you mean and it’s getting harder cause not that many guys really dress up anymore. But if you’re not sure, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

The art, skill and elegance of dressing well seems like it was a bit lost to big brands who often flooded the market with seasonal trends. And it’s great to see channels like this show, educate men what and how to dress the different clothing pieces and altogether bring back classic styling in foundation. You can always improve your individual style upon it. As everyone has an individual style. At the same time of all the things you learn in school. It can be crazy to understand why some things never get taught in school in any real way. Yet I imagine the big brands would all want to own what may get taught in school if it ever was. Still it’s funny how you never get taught in school the importance of clothing, it’s history and dressing well. Yes, not everyone cares to dress well, but as a life skill that affects us all in the working world one would imagine something be taught of it.

Well I gotta say I definitely learned from this video. I knew that the PS couldn’t be the exact fabric and pattern as the tie but didn’t know about the primary/secondary color, etc. Great video.

Great advice never been too into pocket squares but looks like you have got me thinking thanks for the best detailed advice i have seen how to wear them , there,s an Italian company Shibumi who make some lovely ones i think i will try them out. Look forward to your next presentation .Kind regards.

Hey Adam, thanks for the kind words. I’m a huge fan of Shibumi. I own a couple of their ties although I haven’t tried their PS’s yet but they look lovely. I would also recommend Drake’s from your capital city of London. I’d say give these colorful squares a shot and see how you like them. Cheers!

Damn, I've been so scared of wearing colored pocket squares for these exact reasons. Didn't want to be looking like a clown. This is the knowledge I needed, I looked through my pocket square drawer and they mostly look like ties or shirts smh. I was always afraid of the crazy patterns because I thought it was too flamboyant, but it's barely gonna be seen, idk why I was so afraid. Changed my whole mindset man.

i can't believe i haven't seen this video on your channel before, vlad. good stuff though. personally, i do think it's OK to wear a blue pocket square with a blue tie as long as the shades of blue are different enough. if they're to similar, then i agree with you. another point i would like to mention is that i don't only look at my tie when pickng my pocket squares. i try to coordinate it with my hair color, eye color, sock color, shoe color, my watch strap...anything, really! that's what makes pocket squares (and in a more general sense, fashion) so much fun, in that you can let your creativity run wild.

Rewatching for a refresher. @ 1:20 I know exactly who you were referring to, (the pause for reflection 😂). In all fairness though, I think it was sound advice to give to a young person or someone just beginning their journey, which seems to be his target audience. I would raise an eyebrow if a 20 something had the sartorial expertise or confidence to rock the combinations that you share. It would definitely raise eyebrows amongst his skinny jean peers. I agree that matching a solid pocket square w/ shirt is basic but it works (when wearing a solid contrasting tie), if not trying to shine too much. That and he who shall not be named did mention not to wear the matching tie & pocket square sets, (big indicator that he is targeting the novice). The topics you discuss is for that next level. 👍

I usually wear a white PS with a solid tie but as long as the color of the tie is a minor color in the square then it should work.

I tell clients all the time to match their pocket squares to their shirts. Why? Because they want that pop of color, but if I go showing them how to match it properly their eyes start glazing over, which might be on me but too many guys just don't have the attention span. Most guys I help usually are afraid of color and pattern too. I might just end up showing them your video here though, you do a great job of explaining it while remaining entertaining.

Some use the terms interchangeably so you’re not wrong per se. But a handkerchief is not usually decorative but something you’d keep in your pocket to blow your nose for example.

Very good info. And nice now to have a little "system" for confidently picking my next pocket square. Ps. As I hear it mentioned all the time, why do we dress the same for "weddings and funerals"?

Hey Tom, thanks for watching! I’m glad that my tips on picking the right PS to pair with your ties will be helpful. As far as weddings and funeral dress codes are concerned, I’d say the similarity-albeit very different occasions- is they’re truly not about us. We should try to fit in as much as possible as opposed to standing out. Funerals for obvious reasons are not the time for a fashion show. And weddings, the attention should first be on the bride, then the groom, it’s their day. For the record, I don’t dress exactly the same for both. Mainly, I wear either Houndstooth, Glen Plaid or Shepherd ties in various colors to weddings. I also choose a suit with a very subtle pattern like Herringbone or Birdseye. For funerals, my tie is always a Black Grenadine. And my suit is always just solid. My apologies for writing a book but as you can see, I’m very passionate about Menswear and can’t stop talking about it. LOL

Bow ties are just like regular neck ties, so I would still wear a PS. I only wear bow ties with a tux though and I do a white PS.

What’s up, bruh? Good question, for Fall/Winter, all of mines are 70% wool and 30% silk. For Spring/Summer, they’re cotton or some type of cotton blend. My all year around White pocket square is 100% linen. You wouldn’t want Silk in that situation cause there’s a good chance that it’ll keep sliding down into the pocket.

Thanks, Jean! 2 things that can cause the sliding is the material and the size. Most of mine are 70% Wool and 30% Silk and they’re 16” x 16” (41 cm). How big are your pocket squares?

Vladimir Riché oh ok. Mine are mostly 100% silk or 100% wool, or 100% linen. And I think most are 30 or 35cm wide. They all are made in Italy (calabrese 1924 and other less high-end brands), but I never found other sizes of PS. I should try to look for some. Thanks ! 😊

If you’re going to wear a spread collar, use a half or full Windsor. A four-in-hand is too small a knot for that spread.
