I tried your drill for about an hour and got really good feel on my strikes. I had a 18 hole tournament the following day and shot 78. Bro your content kept me in the zone, your teaching method is, direct, and relevant with no dribble like others on you tube. I'm recommending your channel to all my mates.
I've just started watching him, and going out to the range today for the first time to try out his drills and teachings, but so far just even watching in contrast to other youtube teachers, his seems by far the most straight forward and easiest to follow.
Jonathon, this has completely changed my golfing experience, this should be the 1st drill anyone new to golf should master. Like many people i just wanted a simple swing that i could take out on the course. I dont get to play and practice as much as id like and this just works. Thank you so much. I (and going by the comments , a lot of other people) would love it if you did an entire series on THIS swing. Adjustments when moving from short to long irons and even driver. Playing draws and fades etc. I think you'd have loads tuning in.
Went to the range yesterday and tried this drill out. I was hitting my irons consistently better than I have in the past 2 months, nothing better than a nice iron shot. Thanks so much man! You definitely got my sub.
I have been using this drill for years! I always use this drill in my pre round warm up, I start with it and finish with it. It brings me back to good ball striking. it is amazing how far the ball goes when you make the right contact!
This young open mind man shows skills about teaching which are probably one of the very best if not the best on You Tube !! Thanks to Eric Cogorno who told the best about this vid! I initiated by myself this drill with my wedges a few months ago and I’m gonna do it asap with my irons. And may be my driver… Feeling contact, turning the pelvis, using the lead arm, getting the proper tempo, shifting on the lead foot , all the main principles are described in this single drill. And , why not, eventually having more or less ( less for me), Tommy Fleetwood’s swing!!😂 Thanks from 🇫🇷 for the good job.
Jkm dang the is a great drill. Something I havent been doing for yrs. I did this for a day in backyard n then to gc. I didnt score great but I was hitting some shots that were really good n further. Its allowing me to release now where as b4 if I did the release felt like I was gonna promote a hook or pull. You just explain really well and appreciate ya
Fantastic drill! I'm 55 and my ballstriking is so consistent and powerful now. I play this way with my irons and hybrid clubs, and I won't look back. Thank you so much!
Thanks, Jonathan! I greatly enjoyed watching your lessions. You break down key stages of swing and make improvements much more achievable. A big thanks too for explaining why many tour players do three quarter finish to such great effect.
Excellent drill! Before this I was hitting up, now I"m hitting down. Is there a video for the next step, how to transition to a normal swing? Although perhaps just use this swing in a round😅
I am a beginner golfer playing off 22 and your videos have helped my golf game so much, I'm improving every time I play after watching your tutorials and using your drills. Thank you very much.
Thanks Jonathan you made it so easy and simple and it really works. If ever you visit San Diego Ca. Let me host you in our many golf courses here or my Military Golf Courses
I like this, Jonathon. It’s like a chip shot on steroids. I have seen drills similar to this before but I never considered it suited me. But your straight forward demonstration has convinced me to work on it. It’s wearying always searching, always looking for something that works longer than four or five holes.i will be checking out your other videos. Thanks
I am now taking lessons at Golftec, Cleveland East and your videos are the absolute best out there. Your swing is a beautiful thing to see and very inspiring. Thanks. Bernie!!
l will definitely try this as I am always so concerned about following through so far and it looks like i won't have to do that. I'm an old duffer so this might work for me. thanks
Agreed, your videos are very good and to the point. You also do a great job showing how different golfers you see when doing a move incorrectly that is spot on vs other RU-vidrs who shows over exaggerated movements mistakes and I can never relate to. Keep it up!!
It’s 2024 and I just found this video. I played 18 two day after first watching this video and I stg I’ve never had a better ball striking performance of my life! Thank you so much 👊🏽
I appreciate how you go directly to the point. So many of the RU-vid teachers waste time particularly in the beginning. You are very refreshing. Thanks
Your explanation was awesome i’ve been doing this drill for several weeks now and I’d have to say it does work. I’ve learned this drill from Adam from scratch golf. Your explanation is just as good if not better than Adam’s.
Great drill I hit 7 iron 90 mph clubhead speed 182 yards. I have a question I tend to recoil quite a bit on my follow through . I can’t seem to stop at 3/4 finish like yourself am I doing something wrong.
Hey Jonathan, I follow your videos and find them instructive, but I would like to know how hard to squeeze the grip? With the left and right hand.Thank you and greetings
Hey great tip thank you I just wanted to ask a question I noticed in your iron Trail arm wrist has quite a bit of 90° wrist cock at halfway point very quickly. I was thinking that often we are taught that drivers we should hit up on them. And irons we should be hitting with a descending blow, so I am thinking or wondering, do irons from the wedges, gap wedges, pitching wedge, all the way up to your highest iron do irons have more wrist cock than your driver and your Three-wood because you want more extension in your backswing before you have wrist cock in the upper part of the finish of the backswing I hope you understand what I’m saying What do you think? I’m trying to avoid too much wrist movement from address to halfway point open club face with irons. To avoid your shanks leading edge, and shots or toe shots.
Maybe this has been covered, but how should I be initiating my downswing for this drill? Once my weight shifts 70-80% to front foot, just let the club follow the weight?
My ball striking is weird, when playing on a mat my irons are super consistent but when playing on grass i can’t make solid contact (hitting the ball into the ground)
Great drill explained in great detail! I use it often and it gets me back in the groove. I do wonder what the right wrist should be doing. How much extension? Similarly, is there any flexion in the left wrist? Thanks!
There are three aspects of wrist movement: 1) rotation of ulna / radius for pronation / supination; 2) extension / flexion slapping action, and; 3) radial - ulnar deviation thumb up / down action. All three can accelerate the club head mass on the end of the shaft without any forward hand velocity. In fact is is when the hands slow down in the downswing those three wrist movements allow the club to whip past the hands-ACCELERATING. Of the three radial - ulnar deviation will move to club head the furthest in the least amount of time. But in a convention “sustain the lag” swing radial deviation is maintained until after impact. Here you are allowing your wrist to change from ‘thumb up’ radial deviation to ‘thumb down’ ulnar deviation through impact. That was something Hogan discovered and incorporated into his wrist movement just before impact which I discovered teaching myself how he swung and figuring out the cause and effect of the physics. What slowed the hands down in Hogan’s swing was how his grip technique and tucked in back elbow and side-bend locked hands directly in front of body in sync with his hips. If back heal is left on the ground the hips rotation is forced to stop bio-mechanically when hips shift laterally to target reach 45° open. It feels quite literally like the left hip is hitting a solid wall. That abrupt stoppage of hips and hands will cause the club head to whip around the hands BUT ONLY IS IF THE GRIP IS LIGHT ENOUGH TO LET THE WRISTS MOVE FREELY, especially the lead hand. It works best when thumb and index finger of the right hand pinch the club tightly like a hinge pin and the other fingers have the lightest possible pressure-what Sam Snead described as being like you would hold a baby bird. As mentioned the most acceleration comes from the thumbs-down casting action. That’s the same wrist action seen in fly casting and cracking a whip. What causes the cracking sound is the tip of the whip breaking the sound barrier! When adding that act to the golf swing before impact it can snap the head off the shaft at the hosel if it is not coordinated with lifting up the back heal which is what unlocks the hips and allows them to finish rotating the hips to fact the target. The more the release of the heel is delayed with longer clubs the more forward bent there will be in steel and carbon fiber shafts before impact. That changes face angle unpredictably so ball contact is more consistent if the back heal is released as that forward bowing is felt in the hands, which is what can be seen in Hogan’s swing. There was a trick shot artist Harry Frankenburg with stage name Count Yogi who developed a swing with a huge amount of radial - ulnar deviation very similar to chopping a horizontal log with an axe or hammering a nail at a 45° angle which was very unconventional but very efficient and accurate.
Jonathan...if I am struggling with the shanks, would this drill be the best. I have greatly improved the woods swinging in to out by keeping the back towards target while swinging to say 1 0'clock direction but not able to transfer to the ground and compress the ball with the irons. Hybrids are OK ...............Would there be a video on the shanks?
I stumbled onto your channel and this drill. As an older player at 65, 30 years of playing fairly well, I decided I needed to rotate better towards my 70s. I have a tenancy to flip the club a little. Despite the fact I've gotten down to a 4.3 index, I'm not happy with my ball striking. This drill I have found amazing, I'm doing it every range session, the striking is improving to a level I didn't think I was capable of. I've subscribed to your channel, looking forward to learning , many thanks.
Wow I just tried this drill for about 45 min. Consistently better ball striking. Something about thinking of stopping the club makes you forget about the crap and just hit it. ….which I’ve done for so long so now I’m nervous I’m going to slip back into bad habits?? We shall see, but first impression is that this drill is absolutely amazing!
Hello Jonathan, I am a man just into retirement (also fairly elderly ) and wish to enjoy my golf in retirement. I have never been a good golfer and have a very poor handicap (45 may be a good level). I have watched your videos online and they are all great and very instructive and helpful. I have tried ti improve my iron shots using your 3-stage drill. I do the drill without a ball and it feels great and I am constant with the mark I hit and the strike. However, as soon as I place a ball there I go to pieces and back to bad habits. I try to scoop the ball up. This is something you addressed. My question is - is this common that as soon as the ball is there the golfer - me - goes to pieces??? Hope you are well. Best Rusty
Jonathan, I really like your videos. Some of the best I've seen on a given subject. What do you recommend for someone that is challenged with keeping the left arm from bending too quickly in the through swing? I'm a right hand golfer. Also, my tendency is to start the downswing from the top by moving the upper body to the forward side too early. I've tried your technique of moving the lower body towards the target earlier but that seems to cause a flip of the hands and club head. Any advice you can offer is very appreciated.
