The HIT HARD, STOP QUICK (HHSQ) drill is the #1 drill I prescribe to students on a daily basis and the best drill to improve your ball striking. The HIT HARD, STOP QUICK drill helps to coordinate and synchronise the body, arms, wrists and club motion in a simple way that no other single drill can accomplish.
This drill improves ball striking, compression, lag, power transfer, radius management, sequencing, shaft lean and the loading and unloading of the arms and wrists. It really is a "one-stop" drill that creates many improvements and benefits from free.
The key to this drill is building up from small (but quick) swings where you're able to STOP QUICKLY and keep your ARMS STRAIGHT. Too many people who try this drill swing too far to begin with and are unable to STOP fast enough and control the finish. Once you grasp the correct finish, you can begin to swing further back and continue to HIT HARD and STOP QUICKLY.
There are multiple PGA Tour players utilising this drill/feel in their practice and in their play. Tommy Fleetwood is one player who demonstrates the ARMS STRAIGHT and SHORT FINISH associated with this drill expertly. The sharp braking in the follow-through is a fantastic way to regulate and sequence the body and club motion. This 3/4 feeling swing, should not be mistaken for a less powerful swing - in fact, it can help to transfer more energy into the ball resulting in LONGER shots than your standard "full" swing.

This drill plus Jess Frank video on P3 to P8 swing are game changers... after 20 plus years of not swinging a club I am easing back into the game... getting accused of being a former low handicapper just fooling around... nope a former high handicapper, now in my sixties starting over but with a few secret weapons at my disposal... the instruction from Rob Cheney, Jess Frank and Tom Saguto... Yes, I will share with others just not right away ; )

This is by far the most impactful drill I have ever done in five years of golf. It completely transformed my ball striking to always taking a divot after the ball with arms extended. I’m able to play the ball at different ball positions now front of foot or back foot, I’ll because it taught me how to time everything properly.

I used this after I first saw the video and was amazed by the compression and improved strike location on the face. I’m a perpetual heel shanker. I then made the mistake of trying to lengthen it for my “full swing”. Surprise….early extension and bad contact came back. I started using it again to “fix” my contact and what do you know……the shorter swing and controlled finish resulted in better contact, predictable curve and more distance than my “full” swing. I am now committed to it being my full iron swing and love the control. Full Stop!

He’s not joking, this drill is a game changer

I have been using this drill to start my training sessions for a few weeks now and can attest to the fact that it will improve your contact, accuracy and even distance

Great drill looking forward to trying it along with your bowling drill you recently posted. If you get chance could you possibly record doing this drill with driver? It would be interesting to see. Thanks for your help
@darrenhadden1037
A+ drill my favorite 🎉
@kennethmalone6233
Loved the hit hard stop fast video. I can't locate the video to extend to driver.
@gerx18
Just used it out on the course today ,and what a fantastic drill this is. l do not need any other, lm walking round the course with a permanent smile,thank you Rob.
@berrienmoore7540
Excellent drill--never saw this before--thank you
@cheeks9596
Rob thanks for all the great information..now I need to take it to the course..
@WLeonardAthas
Thank you sir and I'm going to take this "hit hard stop fast" technique to the course tomorrow morning.

I have been using the S&T principles for well over a year and the one thing that has helped things 'click' for me is using the 'hit had, stock quick' action for my full swing and it has literally been a game changer. I have become so much more consistent now and this video was a great reminder to keep doing this drill when stuck indoors, or even as part of a range session, or pre-shot routine. Thanks Rob.
@sureshvijan5503
This is amazing. I have always been advised to follow thru all the way. The finish is good and my carry has gone up by 20 yards. Thank u.
@adritch
Maybe I'm doing this wrong but it is very hard on my lead hand. I feel like all the force from the club stopping goes into my left hand. Did this drill for 30min and my hand was really beat up. Also is way more difficult than you make it look lol. I feel like I have to start stopping the club before I even hit the ball.
@EhtizanEditor2
Hey Rob, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made.
@paulkelly8428
A good add to feels. On their dvd Andy and Mike describe a feeling of the hands pulling away from the shoulder quickly. Is this similar to this drill? If not, have you done a video discussing that?
@jeremiahmclane2374
Can you do a backswing video where you describe the process of turn, tilt and extend and the weight pressures when you do this
@richichichi78
Wow. Great feel. Was hitting it crisper almost immediately. Question though. If I were to let the left wrist release as I stop quick. Is the correct release for the back of the lead wrist to extend more up to the sky versus turned over to the left?
@dling1476
It works very well up to iron 5 for me. Hybrid and wood 3 is sometimes too wild, does it work with the woods?
