Kia/Hyundai are reimagining their EVs, and they LOOK BRILLIANT. Just looks beautiful and can't wait till the IONIQ 9 or the 2025 EV9 releases. HUD(Gt-line), massage seats (higher trims), heated and ventilated in some trims for the second row, usable three rows, pop out tray, etc. So much to offer.
You need to close de doors, press the fob key to open the doors and the plug is unlocked. It's a security feature, but it can be confusing for new owners. EU EV9 here. In Europe the back seats all fold electrically
15:15 the Korean makes like to lock the charge port, and I think that's why some of the public connectors have broken lock tabs, because some people are probably pressing really hard on the release until the tab breaks. Double tap the unlock button on the fob or the driver side door and that should unlock the port.
So you reviewed a car and came to the conclusion that the UI was the trigger? We moved from MX to EV9 and can't be happier. The overall quality, the roominess, actual buttons for basic interactions, the quietness. Everything goes to Kia. Thank 5for a great video.
I mean it depends what you are looking for I guess. For me Tesla is better not just because of the UI, but their entire computing power. It's more intuitive, more responsive, and that also results in a unmatched self driving technology that no other vehicle comes close to. To me the Tesla is a big computer that can take me somewhere without me having to do much. The Kia is an overall better vehicle for sure, but it just feels like a regular car but with a battery instead of an engine.
I'd LOVE to own a Tesla someday, but they are still too expensive for me 😥 I'm buying a Kia Niro PHEV this week, so I LOVED hearing the Kia driver assistance is very similar to Autopilot! I love that the Kia drivers assistance features are FREE!!!
My favorite feature of the EV9 is the screen selected battery preconditioning feature. You do not need to use any navigation software. When you are about twenty minutes from the DC charger you want/hope to use you just push the start button. I have had a Kia Niro EV for four years. I sat with a salesman and talked over all the new features of the EV9. The climate control screen is in a odd place but you can move it to the bigger screen on the right if you are more interested in climate than the map.

Where I live the price difference is much larger and I think it will make the EV9 more appealing to a lot of people here. I live in Denmark where the price is approximately 43000 dollars more for the six seater Model X.
At 28:30 Model X base with ONLY adding a Six Seat configuration is Not $77,000-It is $84,490 before order & destination fees. (Since I posted, Tesla raised the price of the X by $2000-Now it’s 86,490-base & only adding 6 seat configuration) Inflation!?!
Great review but 2 major errors. 1) Model X 6 seater costs $86,500 not $77k like you said. I guess you are confused about the gas savings that Tesla includes on the order page? 2) at 28:50 you said the Model X price for 6 seat and you said that it qualifies for the EV tax credit. This is incorrect, none of the 3 row Model X qualify for the EV tax credit. Only the 5 seater with no 3rd row qualifies.
Also she said UI. The vehicle has built in navigation which does pre condition. If you use apple car play or android auto which Tesla doesn't have than you don't have it.
Not a single Electrify America 350w has given me anywhere close to that. I get about 220 max. The EV9 is fantastic, our infrastructure still needs work.
Great review, just started watching your videos, love your family, thank you for sharing, nice to see the point of view of a Tesla owner. I have an EV9 like the one you tested, I've had a great experience so far, I actually charge L1 at home 😅, haven't installed a L2 connection yet, but there's a Walmart nearby where I can do DC fast charging for free, it charges super fast at around 200kw, takes me around 18 minutes most of the time to go from 20% to 80%. I've done a couple of long trips so far no issues at all. Great first EV.
I just bought an EV9 and got significantly below MSRP. Like more than 12K, in that respect there is no price comparison. Also it's s a lot easier to source Kia parts than Tesla.
The dealership network is a significant point. Any medium sized or bigger city should have a Kia or Hyundai dealership, making emergency repairs or service so easy. I live in a rural town with only ford, GM, and Stellantis dealerships, so i got an F-150 Lightning, I need to have a dealership nearby. Saw my first EV9 in the big city this weekend waiting to charge. Very pretty car.
@@Chris-ms8qz why would a new battery cost anything? Just like my Tesla or any other electric car for that matter, there's at least a 10 year 100k warranty if something goes wrong.
@@Chris-ms8qzdepending on where you live it’s a 7 - 10 year warranty. Also over the past decade the cost of ev batteries have dropped … in 10 yrs when the ev 9 is out of warranty and in need of a new battery it would be cheaper. Also as a comparison I have an FJ Cruiser - last year at its 10 year service I had to fork out a lot of $$ for it as part of standard 10 yr servicing
Too bad you didn’t get a GT model. I bought a GT Panthera grey and it is amazing! Actually getting about 320 miles range and 0-60 in under 4.5. GT also gets massaging seat. Deserves car of the year. Great review video. I too had the same problem pulling out the charger until I simply hit the door unlock. The Modelx has too many quirks and third row space problems, and costs way too much. Push the little star in the upper right of the climate and it makes it big, across the screen.
I agree with reviewers about UI and charging effectiveness. But how much time do u spend on Ui? In the car most people set it once and forget it. Most used features are rith on your finger tips in Kia. You have apple car play and android Auto for you map convince. How many times do you keep changing settings and doing things in UI?
Ui is total user preference. Kia interface is generally positively reviewed and easy to use. I'm not surprised a tesla or apple user would complain, that seems to be par for the course for anything that is different. Also the complaints they listed about not being able to pre condition were based on using carplay because they claimed the built in nav was so terrible. I haven't heard that elsewhere and if you use the built in navigation charging info and preconditioning are included just like Tesla. If you choose not to use that nav you forego those capabilities. That's not a UI flaw
I'm the dada of a toddler and one baby coming soon. EV9 owner, same color too but with the GTLine trim. I just want to say that your review was dead on accurate for everything! Hard to find someone that actually has the critical mind like me that points out things like the push button mute on the volume roller thing. So whoever's watching this, these guys are have a really accurate depiction of the car in real life scenario. Just want to mention one thing though, regarding the removal of the charging plug. All you had to do was click UNLOCK on the doors or on your key fob. It locks in your charger usually until you actually click unlock on your key or car. So while the doors are unlocked, the charger kinda auto locks after a while and you have to click the button to release it. FYI.
There are decent lease deals with the EV9 (500/month, 0 down), price actually compares with Model Y--- can literally lease 3 EV9s vs 1 Model X lease (1500/month + 4k due at signing)🎉
you have to press unlock on your key to release the charge cable. it’s a safety thing that should be the first thing anyone tells you before giving you the keys to a KIA ev :)
The X is only cool due to the gull wings. Everything else about the Kia other than the native navigation and frunk is better. I looked at both and chose the GT Line EV9 due to it being way better for our usage needs.
your charging lock issue is user error... you have to set for security purposes how you wanted it unlocked. I set my EV6 on "unlock car from keyfob". Its about getting to know your car rather than using the same "functionality" as how Tesla does it. we all know Tesla does the weirdest things. FYI, EV9 nor any Tesla has the capability to go "350". EV9 is technically a 500-600v car has max 211kwh speed, other e-gmp cars can get 240kwh max. The new Porche Taycan or Macan and Lucid are probably the few can go 300... maybe cybertruck or hammer EV.
Love my Nero and EV6. Not one problem and they are so fast and quiet and actually have buttons for the AC and easy access to the freaking windshield wipers
Your oldest is so intelligent and well spoken! 👏 Main diff between the driver assistance systems are that Teslas autopilot and FSD are basically not reliant on road lines. Yes it does beep at you from time to time of it doesn't see lines but it never disengages
The EV9 is nice. Tesla needs a longer Model Y for larger families. The X is awesome but too expensive and the FWD are cool and useful with kids but in many cases are less than ideal (I owned an X and now have a Y so have first hand experience). Tesla certainly need to extend the Model Y lineup - a longer one and an off road version. Doing so they’ll be able to sell more than 2m Model Y per year and open multiple markets.
Have a Plaid and love it. Bought wife EV9 Land via amazing deal on a lease. Will pay 19K for 24 months (renting the vehicle). The car is amazing for the price point (not MSRP). The seats are a joy, the drive is fantastic; and it is very very quick (0-60 in 4.4 secs). Yes, oddly enough, faster than the GT Line. Tesla makes very innovative cars and I love my Plaid, but I can’t see buying the X over the EV9. Thank you for the video however. Great job.
I don't like the HVAC being "hidden" behind the wheel either in my EV9. I have found that the plus in the upper right corner of that small screen opens up an HVAC super interface in the right screen. We just recently went on a 1,500 mile round trip to FL from Chattanooga, TN. The charging was a bit of an issue with EA being unreliable. We used EA because our purchase came with 1,000kw free charging on EA with a deadline to use within 3 years and why not use free fuel. We saw a peak of 218kw when charging but I believe I read that they have it capped at 210kw vs the 350kw you mentioned in the video (but clearly I saw it exceed that). We also have a Kia Telluride so the UI we have gotten used to and don't find it problematic, although WTF, the steering wheel controls are mirrored on my 2024 EV9 from my wife's 2023 Telluride!!! Great review and I felt like you had many good points. I definitely felt like the front and rear hidden storage was just enough to say it was there not to be very useful. I do absolutely love the drive feel of the EV9 and the lane assist is really good but it is a little bit more aggressive compared to our Telluride in the same mode. I think discussing miles/kw that the Kia shows on one of the screens would be easier direct comparison for range capabilities, assume that Tesla has that same information. I have seen as high as 3.2mi/kw and average 2.7mi/kw which would be 270-320 miles (possibly). To reiterate, I think the charging issue is a big deal for trips. I have a level 2 at home so that is likely the only time it will be an issue for us.
Oooookay! Been waiting for this one! Happy Birthday to Laikyn! 🎂 Wish I could have been in the 6th seat on this trip. I agree that E-GMP vehicles are more comfortable. But it's also true that their frunks and under cargo storage bins are minimal. I have found, however, that it's actually rare that you have to fill them to the brim. Bummer with the Electrify America charger, but… it happens, all too often. I've found that, if a 350kW unit is down, a 150kW unit actually charges nearly as fast, because they're still pulling over 100kW at 80% -unlike Teslas, that drop to half that rate. Also, the slow rate using Magic Docks isn't telling the whole story. Yes, most E-GMP cars that I've recorded only hit 97 kW from a Supercharger, but… and this is important… they're still pulling all 97 kW when they hit 80%! NOT so with Teslas, which drop to around 50kW. Ergo, they charge nearly as fast. Oh… you frustrated me trying to unplug! The emergency release cable is so convenient; too bad you didn't know it was there. The navigation does seem more clunky, but I've found that it actually does a very good job, despite not having the "cartoon" images you're used to in the Tesla on the touchscreen. And the heads up display more than makes up for that, in my not-so-humble opinion. As for ADA, I much prefer the cruise control, lane keep, and lane changing in E-GMP more than Autopilot in my previous Model 3. I have to chuckle over Landon's and Liam's reactions. I mean, honestly, I bet they'd rather have their games and videos on their OWN separate phones and iPads than just one screen in the car that they have to share. Tell me I'm wrong!
EV9 all the way. Tesla is quickly losing market share as quality and reliability of their vehicles have gone down significantly, especially at this price point. We love our first generation EV9 and can't wait for the next!
To remove the charging cable on the EV9, all you have to do is click the unlock button, even if the car has already been unlocked. Surely you all know this. You don't need to use the emergency unlock.
The Tesla Model X 6 seater does not qualify for tax credit. It comes out to 86k after taxes, with free color and free tires. So there is definitely a large gap between prices if you compare 6 seater vs 6 seater.
As soon as Kia switches to NACS and fixes their shite in vehicle interface, it’s done. Tesla model X has less usable room for WAY more money. Our neighbor has an X, we have a 3 and an EV6 and our best friends have the EV9, I’ve seen them all and besides charging and dumb legacy auto crap, the Kia is a much more usable car for the money.
Happy to see you drinking Proud Source. My son in law and daughter started that company out of Boise, ID! He designed the bottle with the screw top lid. I tried car play in a new Rav4 and it sucked compared to the Tesla UI. I don't understand why people love it so much.
Unfortunately Kia and Hyundai wouldn't be able to use the Tesla chargers most likely either end of summer or early fall if Elon don't fire more people from super charging stations.
I thought that was you guys at the Leavenworth Electrify America, but I wasn’t sure, so I didn’t ask. I was in the ID.4 that was in the one working charger. That was the first and last EA on my road trip to Wisconsin and it was the only one that was being worked on. Three times I had to move to a different plug, but this year was so much better than last year’s trip because there were no chargers working at only 32kW. I mentioned that Tesla Superchargers also have the same issue at some places along I-90 in Montana where one plug wasn’t working and there was a line of cars waiting for the other three. For comparison on this trip I never saw another car at an EA station until I was in Iowa after Leavenworth. I have been interested in the EV9 Land mostly for cargo and it has a trailer hitch with the same tow rating as Model X. My issue with X since I mostly look at used ones 2020 or newer is the second row not folding unless you find a five seat. Most of the EV9’s have been discounted by $8-10k, but aren’t eligible for the tax credit unless you lease until the Georgia factory is going. Tesla has the best route planning software. I can’t speak to Kia’s, but with VW, I pretty much take the distance and add 60 miles of buffer to make it to the charger. The VW goes crazy at 20% and starts routing to other chargers than my target which is added stress. With my Tesla, it told me what percentage I would arrive with and unless there was a headwind I would meet, or exceed that. So with the Supercharger network and the route planning, I would lean Tesla, but Kia is making an impressive car and they seem to be pretty aggressively priced
You guys botched the pricing. The Model X only qualifies for the tax credit in the 5-seat configuration. The 7-seat and 6-seat version go up over $80k. The 2024 EV9 Land AWD is available in the mid-$70k range here in Austin, but it doesn’t qualify for the tax credit until early 2025. When leasing instead of purchasing, things change.
It's funny how you play spot an EV. I play that too with my wife and son here in Australia. Except since our car is a BYD, we only spot other BYDs, with different points for each model depending on how popular they are.
800V equipment is actually more expensive and efficient. Tesla should move UP to 800V charging like Porsche, Lucid and (weirdly) Ki/Hyundai. But it requires more cost which is likely why we will never see it in our Teslas.
@@walkerdarin2003just took our EV9 on a 4000 mile road trip from Washington State to Yosemite, Grand canyon, Zion etc. most ccs chargers worked great a few we had to switch to a different charging stall but nothing that delayed our trip. Very impressed, I must be lucky?
@@walkerdarin2003 Why? You can get a $200 adapter to charge a non NACS vehicle (Ford and some others give away these adapters to people purchasing their cars). Regardless, many superchargers have "magic dock" so non Teslas can charge as well.
Thanks so much for the 2 segments on the EV9. I agree with most of your comments but the unfortunately when it comes to the discussion on the price every review of a dealership based EV seems to ignore the reality of the out the door price. With the Tesla, I know almost exactly what the price is before I go pick up the car. I don’t have to endure the hours of negotiating that comes with buying through a dealership. $70K?, good luck trying to get that price. Talk to an owner and compare the out the door price please. The Tesla buying experience shines in that department. Love your channel! Keep up the good work!
also forgot to mention that a few months later, Tesla might significantly drop the MSRP on the car, making the car that YOU just bought worth less overnight.
Love your videos as they tend to be real world use. Most people travel with their families and this gives a great real world example of what to expect.
💣video, Kim and PJ! Personally... After some time, the only reason I'd ever want an X is the falcon wing doors. I don't even want an S anymore. There are so many more reasons I'd prefer a 3 and even more I'd prefer a Y. A Cybertruck would be great, but more expensive. I'd also buy a Roadster, but would most prefer the Signature series. There are other EVs I'd buy, but I also prefer to be able to use the Tesla superchargers over any other charger while away from home. If I were to buy a Kia then I'm still preferring the Sportage. H🤠WDY to the kidz!
Good video ….. just to say your oldest son is a very glib speaker and appears to be very intuitive and very smart. You should get his opinion about vehicles more often.
9:31 Kim Java being Kim Java. 😊 For smaller families the X but larger ones the EV9 for sure. The roof rack like what your husband said. I would take the EV9 for sure. Nice family btw! Edit: Nice that you included the kids opinions at the end cause to me that matters a lot as well. I would say for younger families storage space is key. Once the kids get older then you won't need to lug around strollers anymore. The 3rd row space on the EV9 is bigger tho and not the same. The charging network will get better in the Kia so that shouldn't be a deal breaker imo. I personally have an EV6 GT but test drove the EV9 GT-line and loved it.
Great Video!! Very good points. Why would you put your sandals together with your pillow? Think about it. One goes on your feet that touches the filthy ground, while the pillow rest your head. 🤔 You should compare Kia's adaptive cruise control with Autopilot, not against FSD.
I'm so close to getting an EV9 for my family (2 kids still in car seats) as a strict upgrade from our sedan, but given the economy, high interest rates, and surprisingly expensive true cost of ownership, this is really risky. A KIA vehicle being nearly a $750.00 per month lease is insane in today's economy. Not to mention cost of L2 charger installation and elevated insurance costs.
I noticed insurance for Tesla is much higher. Also verify if Kia had promotions like Hyundai where they give you a free charger plus some money for install.
Great video. I think you were very fair in your evaluations. One question. Does the Kia get regular software updates that often add features? This week my X got an update which opens the front automatic doors more fully. It was great. It also made the AC work better and quieter. Real nice.
The storage on the EV9 is very small (specifically in the front, what is under all that plastic?..🤔). The R1S has an ample front trunk by comparison (with a sub floor at that ☝🏼😲). Awesome idea letting the kids speak on what they like and do not like about the vehicles (possibly segment their POV’s going forward, or an maybe EV kids channel?..🤔). This may open up a new audience imo, as potential EV consumers are more likely to include such reviews in their decision. They are all growing so fast 🤌🏻🥰. All the best 🤘🏻😎.
Didn’t the EPA get more strict with Tesla on its range claims? But I guess that has nothing to do with its software telling you how many miles you have left.
Comment , Kia EV9 reliability. Too new to tell., long term. This is generation one vehicle. Already a Kia recall on seat switch possible burn up. Also OTA software updates. My 2022 Kia Ev6 gets only radio entertainment updates. No dog mode features. What about EV9 12volt battery issues? These are questions I have for Kia and reviewers I would like addressed!
I'd rather have a larger cupholder than a smaller one... it may not be the most snug fit, but it will fit a larger variety of cups and bottles. Solid range, just wish there was more storage either in the frunk or the rear storage well. I quite a bit more cargo capacity in my model Y than the EV9 apparently.
With a 6 / 7 passenger Electric SUV I feel like the charging network and infrastructure is absolutely crucial! I'd get a Model X LR in a heartbeat compared to the EV9, just based on that alone. When more companies adopt NACS maybe I'll feel differently, but I've come to rely on the supercharger network in such a way that anything less just feels uncivilized lol. The 2nd dealbreaker for me is the lack of storage space. Not having a usable frunk on a vehicle that large is shocking to me, and it has less under sub-trunk space than even our ICE Nissan Pathfinder with the spare tire underneath in the exterior. I agree the UI is snappy and it's useable, no dealbreakers there considering the Apple Carplay & Android Auto compatibility.
Hmmm... I haven't driven an EV9, so thank you for the review. I guess I would take the Model x, although I'm not a fan of the doors. I understand your reasoning, though. But, in my case, it would just be gimmicky. Now, regarding Tesla vs everything else. I definitely prefer the Tesla ecosystem. My son had a 2020 Model Y, and he drove it all over the country. I've never used a supercharger. For everyday, he charged it in our garage (on our Nema 14-50 outlet.) But, he had no trouble supercharging it out in the world. For me: I really would like a Tesla minivan. Doesn't exist... yet... but something taller and wider, with sliding doors. I drove a Honda Odyssey for about 20 years, and I miss it so much! I miss the sliding side doors. I used them every single day. Never had a door bang into anything else, because... it had sliding doors! Looking forward, I don't think I will purchase anything other than a Tesla. But, I want a minivan. That would suit my daily needs. So, I'll wait and see, and keep driving my ginormous, gas-guzzler. But, I'm ready for a Tesla when they have something good!
Tesla owners buy adapters to use public charging, what's the big deal about just getting an adapter for the Kia? Then again, they will be switched over very shortly anyway, no biggie either way
