Many of our fig varieties are producing delicious fruits right now, so it's a great time to tour the fig orchard and see some of these tasty treats.
We'll also be planting more okree in the backyard garden -- this time an heirloom variety that we grew last year and really liked.

I dearly love my Celeste tree figs. When I first put her in the ground about 20 years ago in honor of my mother Celesta, all that I did was dig a hole and put the little, tiny tree in the hole. I thought she had died when all the leaves fell off for winter.😂 Since then she’s become a huge tree packed full of delicious figs every year. I’ve never fed or pruned her. The figs are on the smaller size, but make up for it with their delicate, complex flavor and sweetness, kind of like her name.💗🌿

So many of the heirloom vegetables and fruits will have an origin story connected to their history, such as Mr. Ruiz's family okree or the Rose tomato. Reading those stories tells me a lot about the people who saved and passed on the seed to us. You're going to have your head among the clouds when you return from CajunB's place. Drawing deeper and deeper into the "Community". I wholeheartedly encourage that passion which occurs so seldom in one's life. The legacy you're leaving for Abram and Titus will be about much more than figs.

@ Lazy Dog Farm I would LOVE to try some of those Okra seeds Travis. For propagating the Black Malta have you thought about doing the Air Layering process? It may be the way to go for rooting a branch or several at a time.

I have thought about it. I'm going to try to take cuttings earlier this year and see if that improves my success rate. Air layering would work I'm sure, but it's not the greatest technique for doing 20 or more cuttings at a time.

So envious that you can grow figs in the ground!! I'm in zone 5/6 and it can be done, but apparently you need to bury the whole thing under soil for the winter and that just seems like a lot of work with our clay soil! Enjoy! We here in the lower Ohio valley suffered through another day pushing 100 Degrees, with all the humidity to go along with it. At 10:00 p I went outside on the porch to sit a bit and it still was too hot and humid, with no breeze, had to go back inside. My tomatoes and pepper plants, while still looking relatively healthy, you can tell the heat is starting to get to them.

I got a massive amount of fig cuttings of varying types in some winning bids from Figbid the January before last. I now have about 30 fig trees of different types and flavor profiles. 5 are in the ground and the rest are in 15gal and 25gal pots on drip irrigation. They will be forming two fruit hedgerows between sections of my garden. All are covered in figs right now! I cannot wait. Especially in about 5 years as the trees mature and so will the fruit quality. I highly recommend y’all get a Ronde de Bordeaux in your inventory! They are one of or the earliest producing figs. They will make breba figs as well that are high quality. Also, they will continue to make figs until Fall once they mature!

@@LazyDogFarm In that case... a tried-and-true king for the deep south... is a "Smith" fig. An extremely heat and humidity resistant variety from Louisiana. It is extremely hard to root from cuttings though. The only one I have ever come across that whooped my but on rooting so I gave in and bought an air layer/already rooted one from someone online for $40. Which was darn cheap at that time of year when small 6" trees were going for $100 each. Smith is one of the most reliably heavily productive types there are. Wonderful complex berry flavor as well. You will just have to do air layers with them though for large production. Which has been an amazingly easy thing to do compared to rooting out trees. You basically just keep it in the shade for a few weeks after removal from the parent tree... and boom. It takes off by the time you harden it off to the Sun.

I'm in zone 6 and have one fig(Chicago Hardy) and most years it dies back to the ground. My figs seem to attract wasp when getting ripe and I noticed yours were bug free. Any solution to the wasp problem?

We get wasps on ours too. Just maybe got lucky in this video and didn't see any.

Do you have a problem with birds eating the figs

Usually the birds are more thirsty and looking for water than they are hungry. Try putting a bird bath or other dish of water close by and see it that helps. You could also bag the figs in green organza bags

Sometimes. We don't see them much on our smaller trees. They'll get some of the ones at the top of the Brown Turkey tree -- figs that we can't reach anyways.

Not sure why so many fig enthusiasts don't like it. It's one of my favorites and you should definitely keep it. It's a fast grower and prolific.

I didn't know that. Who made up that silly rule? Sunglasses protect your eyes. No different than wearing sunscreen.
