Becky I have kept chickens for two years in Fl. I do use construction sand for both the outside floor and inside the house. It is a five minute clean up. I do this daily. It is just like kitty litter. In addition I raised the coup 2 ft. Off the ground for a shady place for them in the hot summer. They love it. I put a two ft layer of hardware cloth around the outside edge with a concrete block garden on top. In the areas I had to walk I put patio stones. This includes the run. My coop is only 4X4 as I live in a subdivision that only allows 5 hens. I added 3 nest boxes to one side. In addition I enclosed that are as well as the coop itself to give them an additional 4X6 area that is shaded. Under the house I added to screened doors for easy access to clean. I added small solar fans to each nest box. I know this is over the top but the girls love them. This year I added a automatic door and an exhaust fan. For siding I used fence pickets, that I painted inside and out . The paint is so there is no fumes from the treated wood. I know the fans is over the top, put I love my girls and it is a hobby for me. I don’t recommend the cheep solar fans in Fl as the heat melted the cone tons to the panel an the did not last long. This year I have a 100w solar panel a 300 W Jackery for my power. I use small clip on usb fans . This may not be the answer for most as the Jackery has a cut off after about 8 hours if there is no 10w of power being used. I have 4 fans the door on it and con only pull 9 W. I was able to keep it running 24/7 with full sun. I did not use the exhaust fan as it pull much more power and on short sun days it drained the Jackery. This is a on going experiment. I hope this gives your readers some additional ideas for there coop. I love you Becky, I have your book. In addition I was 75 with no building knowledge when I built my beautiful coop and run.

Five years ago I built my first chicken coop using Becky's design ideas, and I can say, it stands the test of time. I've never had issues with predators, it's so easy to get in and out, the chickens aren't stressed by having too little room, and you can personalize the design to your own tastes and needs. For my situation, I like using the deep litter method rather than sand (which seems to just disappear into our clay soil here in GA) - free amazing compost, no smells or cleaning/raking (just throw more shavings down every now and then), and I just shovel out the free compost once every year or two. Earthworms and pillbugs do all the hard work for me. I can't imagine having some tiny coop with a floor that would have to be cleaned up all the time. So glad I came across Becky's channel before starting to build a coop!

For my very first coop ever, I absolutely love my chicken coop that I built from scratch myself. It’s actually a huge chicken coop tractor that’s on wheels with a trailer type hitch on the front of the coop/run so I can move it around with my truck. But it is extremely heavy! Built it in my driveway and pulled it 300ft out to my side field with my truck no problem. Only thing I didn’t consider was moles/voles digging right under where my wheels are making moving the coop a lot harder now. Haven’t found a good solution for that yet? Too bad I can’t add a picture to show it here that I know of anyway? Over all coop/run is 20ft X 12ft and the coop itself is 12 ft X 12ft and 6 ft inside for headroom. 2 large doors on the back and 2 full size security screen doors on each side of the front into the run . Coop also 3 ft up in the air to give the chickens a dry area underneath the coop as a part of their run. I added a electric fence to one side of the coop making a outside chicken run and leave the one security door open so the chickens got a larger run with over head netting to hopefully keep my chickens safe. Been using it now for 2 years plus and it’s still like new. I get lots of compliments on this coop tractor run set up whenever people see it for the first time. Oh and the roost inside is on hinges so it folds up to the roof of the coop with a door latch to lock it up on the ceiling of the coop to make cleaning the coop so much easier with having nothing in the way on the floor. Btw, I built the coop out of pressure treated 2x6 and 2x4 as well as waterproof plywood with a plastic laminate covering the plywood on the floor so nothing sticks to the floor and everything slides right out of the coop thru the 2 back doors into a cart that I move to the compost piles and garden I bought a floor scraper that has a 12 inch blade for scraping the floor clean when necessary. Most the soiled bedding I use a snow shovel to remove the bedding sliding it out the back door into the cart for removal. I’m disabled and don’t have a lot of strength or energy any more. So I made this coop as easy to maintain as possible and rather then having to clean up the run area I just move the coop/run to another spot. Takes maybe 15 minutes to clean the inside of the coop floor. Not sure how I could make it any more easy to maintain?

I LOVE this design!!! We just bought a new house with a "beautiful" chicken coop. Beautiful but not a great design. It's two feet off there ground and tricky to get into, maybe 4.5 feet high so you have to stoop over while gathering eggs, AND no nesting boxes. I'm so grateful for the coop but man oh man my back hurts. 😉 Love your channel and your book!!!

You did really well on the pavers at the bottom of the steps... but the garden in the front is basically a swimming pool against the foundation wall. Expect water intrusion in the crawlspace unless you have a way to drain past the timbers on the edges. Garden bed should have same slope as your pavers😊

Hi Becky, I saw you Vlog about feeding meat to a chicken's diet. I've been growing red wigglers for composting for about 30 years and they replenish my worm bin consistently and i was wondering if you have a compost pile with any red worms in it...the red wigglers are the perfect meat for chickens. Get your hands on some red worms and you'll be glad you did. Many commercial worm growers to choose from. If you lived in the Northwest I'd send some pronto.

When I first started with chickens we used the coop already on the property someone else built. The coop was 4 feet high, 8 feet long and 8 feet wide however decided in half with 2 doors about 2 and a half feet wide. There was no roost's. I hated this coop, I literally had to crawl in this coop to clean it, getting through ment I had to turn side ways. My cloths were always getting snagged on the wire edges which stick out. The nesting boxes were accessed from the outside which were way to big, cleaning them was hard from in the coop or from outside the coop. Clearly who ever built this coop had no intention of really taking care of the birds. My oldest son built me a temporary coop about 9 months ago it is about 8'x8'x4' with a door I can get through with no problem. We found out the coop is not deep enough. When the chickens would fly off their roost some would hit the open door. We plan to build another one when we figure out where it is going or if we are moving.
