The RAD2x is a new adapter that allows you to plug your retro consoles directly into a modern tv via HDMI! In this video we take a look at the results you can expect from various Nintendo consoles that support this adapter. For use on Nintendo consoles your system must have the Nintendo Multi Out port. Tested in this video is a AV Famicom, RGB NES, SNES, N64, RGB N64 & GameCube! *yes I did notice the typo later in the video of "Nintento" lol... my bad...

The best use for the RAD2X seems to be the Super Nintendo, as the RGB signal from the Super Nintendo is just MUCH better than the composite signal or even the S-video signal. However, the RAD2X is also a great option for use with any RGB modded system, or with the PAL versions of the Gamecube which have RGB output as a stock feature. Personally, I have an RGB modded N64 that I use the RAD2X with, and it's great. However, at least on my TV, I have found that even the much cheaper Hyperkin HDMI adapter looks surprisingly good, and I don't notice any significant difference in input latency, though I do believe there is some additional input latency with the Hyperkin adapter. The only reason I have both is because my friend gave me an RGB modded N64 with the RAD2X adapter shortly after I had bought the Hyperkin HDMI cable. I do also wonder about quality control and longevity with the Hyperkin cable, as I have seen some people complaining about sound issues with them, and other people complaining about them failing completely. I don't really expect an adapter with no moving parts to be prone to failure, and if the sound doesn't work right, you should absolutely return it before the end of the money back return window.

One thing that is not clearly stated on Mike Chi's website is that's not compatible with all PAL standards, for example, I live in Argentina and our standard is not PAL-B as in most EU countries, but PAL-N which is more or less PAL over an NTSC carrier frequency, and all Retrothink's products fail to detect this so all you get is a B/W picture. I imagine is the same for most non-PAL-B countries, this won't matter for most of your audience but maybe this can save some money to someone.

I already placed my pre-orders for the Rad2x cables I needed for the two different consoles I still use - a little over $120 USD when you factor in S&H plus a currency conversion fee to GBP. I intend to use these as secondary cables, though, since my at-home setup will use HD Retrovision cables and I won’t have to unplug those. I’d much like to see versions of these for the PStwo/PS3 (i.e. taps into the YPbPr signal instead of the RGB that Pound uses) and possibly also the Wii - at least one of the Wii consoles I own is of the mobo revision that’s incompatible with the WiiDual mod :(

The image through the eon adapter will appear somewhat sharper because it uses svideo but it is incredibly overpriced for what it offers. The ideal scenario would be a rad2x cable with an rgb modded n64 if possible. Otherwise you are dealing with composite. I know Voultar will rgb mod n64s for $70, board included.

@spideliciousx9822
@spideliciousx9822 4 года назад
Yeah I’ve already got the retrotink 2x, so I’ll stick with it 😉 I utilise svideo outputs on all the retro consoles which does a good job, far better than composite. The only exception is the NES, it’s not RGB modded 🥺 But still is a serviceable experience on the 2x. Before the 2x it’s was TERRIBLE. N64 is svideo through the 2x which is the only bad svideo performer, still respectable, but it’s N64..... it’s still blurry, but way better than composite. I have the Carby Insurrection adaptor for the gamecube which is brilliant!

I'm trying to decide between this and the Eon Super64. How do the picture quality and the smoothing options compare between the two? My console is not RGB modded.
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 4 года назад
With the eon super 64 youll get svideo. With the rad2x the best youll get it composite unless your system is rgb modded. My honest recommendation is to get a cheap rgb mod plus the rad2x. That way you can get rgb out, which the eon super 64 cant do. Itll look the best and after its all said and done theyll end up being around the same cost anyway. Super 64 = 150. Rgb mod $75 + rad2x $50-75.
@donaldhebel9716
@donaldhebel9716 4 года назад
@@ians_parks Yeah I think that's what I'm going to do. At least that way I can get the rad2x, see if it looks good enough for me, and then if it doesn't I can have the console modded later on. Plus I want to get another rad2x for my PS2 anyway. Thanks!
@apollovi

I am getting really excited for these cables. I'm at a point in my collection where I'm ready to upgrade to more than the bare minimum composite/S-video, but I'm really hesitant about dropping a ton of money on an image processor like the OSSC and quality SCART cables only to turn my setup into a rat's nest. These cables look like they do 99% of the job that an OSSC/SCART setup would do, but at a much lower cost and much greater convenience. I can feed so many consoles through HDMI straight to my TV and still have them look great. And none of them are tied down to an external image processor device - I can pair the cables with each device and take them with me really easily without having to worry about anything else. Really, the only drawback looks like the lack of optional scanline generation like the OSSC can do, but those aren't really my cup of tea anyway. I'm probably going to end up getting 4 sets for my SNES, N64, Genesis, and PS2. This is going to motivate me to get my N64 RGB mod done too, lol.

Was interested until finding out it doesnt pull S video signal instead of composite if its not an rgb modded system If I'm gonna tear down my n64 to pull rgb just to use this adaptor to pull better than composite, I'll just put an ultra hdmi in it. Really oughta pull s video instead of composite since it needs no modding.
@Madlittlepixel
@Madlittlepixel 4 года назад
I understand the desire for S-video, but for some the Ultra HDMi mod seems out of reach and RGB is an easier/cheaper solution. Shit I have a Ultra HDMI N64, and it was well worth it. But for me personally, the use I mainly wanted this for is the SNES, and all original SNES consoles have rgb so thats a benefit. I also wanted to use for my RGB modded systems if I want to hook them up elsewhere. But for sure, if you want to use this beyond the SNES and dont have RGB modded consoles, a better bet would be getting a RetroTink2x and component cables and s-video cables for your systems that support them.

I’ve been interested in these ever since I heard about them months ago. Definitely look better than the pound cables and their clones. Impressive. My only gripe is paying to import them but that’s a small issue in the scheme of things. Also I saw someone review the Saturn version and when they flipped the switch the colors on screen would change. I noticed the color palettes being different here but only going from composite to rad2x which is kind of expected.

Why doesn't it support s-video as input for N64 and Gamecube? That is a huge problem keeping using composite for them.

Unfortunatly on umodded consoles the output is pretty terrible. No lag gameplay tbough cept for the one frame tv hdmi buffer. Really just an hdmi for the original snes. Hope they make one for gcn and n64 soon for svideo. Kinda defeats its purpose as a plug n play if it requires soldering mods, but a huge step in the right direction. Btw the genesis one is amazing too.
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 4 года назад
It doesnt "require soldering". Its meant to be a lagless plug and play hdmi device for your classic consoles, not an ossc or framemeister. Hell the reason it linedoubles to 480p isnt because they wanted the image to be sharper, its because they knew 480p was more widely accepted on hdtvs then 240p. With that comes the benefit of a slightly sharper image.

I have this thing what is purpose of it?? I find the quality to be horrible. It makes my N64 flicker and the quality is blurry. and tried it on 2 different screens. Doesn't seem like I can return it either. How do I get good quality out of it? Mine doesn't default to 4:3. I don't get it. I don't get what the point of converting it to HDMI when it looks terrible. I see on your system it's the same it looks terrible unless your system is modded. I'm more disappointed as I thought it was a good cheap high quality system for HDMI on N64. Very Informative video I see you get that noise no matter what. This thing will be no good to me as that will strain my eyes. I think we really need FPGA N64. I wish I would of saw your video before I ordered as other videos I watched said it was great. This is no replacement for FPGA let me tell you. I love my FPGA systems.

Lol! how stupid are you! To get a good picture from this you need a RGB signal from your console! Blame yourself to not read the description of the product before you buy it, and compare a FPGA with a original hardware is even stupider!

If you are happy with that setup then id say no. Its going to be about equal to that quality depending on the console you are using the RAD2X on.

I haven't used one of these myself, but I can see a couple flaws or omissions that might be a deal breaker to some. I have no objections to line doubling 240p and 288p content, but I absolutely HATE the way line doubling looks on interlaced content. Line doubling 480i and 576i content means half the resolution is lost - because at any given time the RAD2X only has half the lines that make up the image to work with. I've tested this with both the OSSC and the RetroTINK, and I'd much rather just let an actual scaler like the Framemeister or even a cheap SCART to HDMI handle such content. I wish the RAD2X had the option to switch off the linedoubling for 576i games. I also see a missed opportunity - since the RAD2X defaults to composite if no RGB is present, why not have a secondary TRRS port for those who want to game on a CRT while simultaneously capture in RGB? I would also like to point out that some TV's might not tolerate the line doubled content coming off certain consoles. In my setup, my TV didn't like any PS1 resolutions coming off the RetroTINK or OSSC, line multiplied or otherwise. I had to feed the HDMI output into a second scaler to normalize the signal.

Do you need a modded NES front loader for it to work on it? I didn't understand how you can get hdmi from the NES front loader, can somebody explain?
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 4 года назад
Yes you would need a modded front loader in order for it to be compatible. It needs to have the nintendo multiout connector that youd see on the av famicom, snes, n64, and gamecube. If you want to forgo modding you could look into getting the retrotink2x instead of the rad2x as youll be able to use your composite cables.

@Madlittlepixel

If you plan to use the tink2x for multiple devices than that may be the better deal. If just the SNES the RAD2X is great. No power or additional cables. I prefer the RAD2X due to convenience.

Not much honestly, especially if you want a good image. A retrotink2x helps though. Ensures you have a lag free solution with linedoubling and an optional smoothing filter.

With an unmodded n64? Yes. In tandem with a super64? No.

They are essentially the same thing except the super64 will appear slighltly sharper on unmodified consoles because it uses svideo. But the rad2x supports rgb if you eventually get your console modded. Both linedouble to 480p and both have a smoothing button.
