McCann Dogs can i skip the tuna?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 6 лет назад
You could use a substitute. The great thing about the tuna is the fact that it’s so smelly! If you do use something else, be sure to use something that’s equally as stinky😉 It’s helpful to capture a dog’s attention if they aren’t really food motivated!
@mayas6364
@mayas6364 6 лет назад
McCann Dogs what do u recommend for a substitute?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 6 лет назад
What is it about the tuna that you’re trying to avoid? Is it due to a GI sensitivity? If so, then choosing your dog’s favorite meat could be a good substitute. If you could use ground liver, that may work. You would have to test the baking times though. I’ve never used that as a substitute for tuna~Ken

For anyone not wanting to use flour; Make your own flour. Use a blender, or food processor and grind rolled oats! It's simple cost a lot less then buying oat flour.

We love this recipe! We’ve saved so much money on dog treats! These are high quality. We quadruple the recipe and freeze the dough. The secret to cutting down the tuna smell is to throw the dough into a ziplock bag and let it sit overnight in the fridge. Doesn’t smell as much when you baked it. We keep the treats in a jar in the fridge or freeze the extra treats we made. Our malinios will do anything for these treats!

@@aimee3487 Hi Aimee, I rarely ever write on you tube so didn’t see your comment. I keep the treats frozen and only take down a week’s worth in a small ziplock. I love watching the video's but I normally do not read comments because so many people are so mean and negative. Take what you need and want from the video's and let the rest go. I have a great personal trainer who is helping me train my Sheltie puppy and my boy responds amazingly well to high value treats during all training exercises. After he has developed the technique the treats are no longer required. All this little 4 legged ball of fire wants is to please me and have me play with him. No need to be mean people. This guy is just trying to help you with your relationship with your dogs!!

Add cheese (the smellier the better) 5. Mix it all together 6. Put into 8x8 pan and flatten it 7. Put treats in oven for 20 minutes 8. Seperate treat from pan, turn them over onto baking sheet, cut them to appropriate sizes (half the size of your thumbnail) 9. Put them back into the oven at 275 for 40-60 minutes, checking on them at 40 minutes 10. Cool to room temperature and use or refrigerate up to a week!

Our new large breed rescue, who is not very food motivated, has so far sampled these tonight! He was sniffing the kitchen air as they baked. This is the same dog who barely ate for 2 wks in foster, and has only recently begun eating meals well for us. (Normal exam+bloodwork). Glad I tried this recipe! Experimented with cooked egg (has been reliable), hamburger, steak, chicken, in addition to several types kibble and dog treats! Maybe I can get him motivated and have fun with these!

Our 18 month old GSD loves these training treats. She goes nuts when I am making them. She knows that when she hears the spoon stirring the coffee in the morning the next step is for us to reach in the fridge for the coffee creamer. She waits by the fridge waiting for her treat! This has really helped training. Whenever I have a few in my pocket I have her 100% attention unless there is a squirrel in the yard. Apparently, barking at squirrels is a much higher reward than tuna treats! Thanks for the recipe! PS: I use parchment paper and Vegetable Spray to grease the pan. I double the batch for a 13 x 9 pan. I freeze half the batch after they have cooled and keep 1/2 the batch in the fridge.

Great recipe! Here is my spin on it. I had some storebought leftover treats that my pup was not keen about. I crushed them into dust in a double plastic bag with rolling pin instead of using flour. 1 egg, 1 can of tuna in water and left over cheese. Baked for 20 minuts at 175*C, cut them up, bake for another 50 min at 135*C. Turned out super enticing for Akela the Husky.

I choose Chick peas flour that is more friendly to dogs diggestion and more rich in protein than plain flour. I'm going to try this today for my bonkers 1 year old lab. Have you ever considered diving the dough into portions and rolling into logs, then cutting tiny pieces and baking? Similar to danish pebernobler? I hVe made that a lot and the dough looks similar texture. Even if you bake high temp initially and then lower to really crisp up. Thought it might save the step of removing and cutting and baking and then breaking up.

Edit: since making these treats, I’ve been informed of the FDA warning against feeding tuna to small puppies (mercury content, high sodium, and other issues). There’s debate on the topic among experts, but the consensus seems to be that small doses might be OK, and perhaps even beneficial, for fully grown dogs (within moderation), but not at all recommended for puppies while their little systems are developing. The tuna varieties with the lowest mercury content are albacore and skipjack. Also, be sure to buy a can packed in water and not oil, and with no added sodium. Based on the research I’m reading, we are choosing not to use these treats until he is fully grown. Very sad because he truly loved them. If you do choose to make these for a small puppy, please research and make an informed decision based on your comfort level and specific dog breed. Original post: Made these with rice flour and our pup loves them! The first batch, I used a small “standard” size can of tuna, but it didn’t seem to have enough liquid to hold everything together so I added water. Made a second batch with the large size can (12 oz) and it’s holding together much better. I also like that it has a higher ratio of meat. Our mini dachshund is going crazy for these, barking at me in the kitchen as I make them! He won’t eat store-bought treats so we thought he wasn’t food motivated until trying these. Thank you!

I wonder if the rice flour has more arsenic than cooked rice. There is an article explaining that boiling rice for 5 minutes and throwing away the water, continue boiling or cooking per recipe removes a significant amount of arsenic while preserving the nutrients. I’ll try to make the treats with canned sardines or mackerel in water, cooked rice and some low salt Swiss cheese.

Making this as I type,, thanks for sharing. I didn't have any eggs so I subbed it with apple sauce so I hope it still taste OK. I was wondering,, I am going to cook down a whole chicken and take the fragments left over bones and all and preasure cook till the bones are soft and blend it all together and make it liquid or chunky. Do you think I could use that as well? Thanks again and new subscriber now.

Thanks for this! Can I use salted tuna? That’s all I have in my house and unsalted tuna is way more expensive for some reason! Also, can I blend up the egg shell to give them the benefits of the nutrients in the egg shell? Thanks for all your training help! It is really helping us train our Aussie Collie pup!

Ever since we made this treat for our pup, it's been the only food for which she shows any motivation. Neither Ziwi Peak nor her normal kibbles mixed with ground up beef liver powder do the trick anymore, and she used to work hard for both. Any suggestions on getting her motivated by other treats again? Shes four months old.

Omg you guys. Take what you want from this. Just like humans some dogs can digest flour, some can't. I gave all my puppies milk and bread or crix up until they could eat chow and all have lived just fine till their teens. Also of course dogs can eat fish. You as the owner can find low or no sodium dolphin safe tuna...at the end of the day you are the responsible one... If this is not your cup of tea find another one that suits you. Just my two cents worth. Very good video, I admire your honesty .

My Border Collie is sensitive to chicken & red meats, so Tuna has been his staple along with hi quality kibble - I have found some cheap sardines, which may be safer so far as heavy metals go so will try that for him - likewise with these treats, I'll be making them for training treats for my rambunctious young Kelpie we've recently adopted and as a special treat for our old BC. Thanks for sharing & I like the tip about keeping the dough in the fridge overnight (in a baggy) to reduce the PONG!

Consider fresh tuna, the smell isn’t pungent and the taste is mild. Once I had fresh tuna as a salad or seared, I never looked back. A nice deli or bakery that make all kinds of sandwiches will have real tuna not canned. You may like it 😊. I love your channel.
@McCannDogs

Good to know, Saveria! I don’t like the smell of the canned tuna. But I think that’s one of the reasons that the dogs seem to go crazy for them. I hate the smell when I’m making them, but I love how “high value” they are for dogs. I may try a deli for some tuna in the future though. Great suggestion! Happy Training~Ken
