I've made this Very Simple Jig as for making Tenons I wanted to share this very simple design and as far as I know, No one has something similar on youtube or It might be just I haven't seen it.
Anyway, I've made the Tenon Jig out of 12mm MDF as it's easy to work with and great for jigs and templates.
The sizes I needed to cut are as follows:
2 Pieces @50 x 350
1 Piece @ 300 x 350
1 Pieces @ 175 x 200
1 Piece @ 25 x 200
Now, this is a very simple build and I have a SketchUp file available from my Google Drive which is free to download You'll find the link below.
drive.google.c...
If you haven't got Sketchup don't worry it's free and I have placed a link below.

Very nice and simple jig; I made one and I love it. I'm getting crisp and accurate tenons with this thing. I made the strips that butt up the against workpiece on the underside of the board ca. 1 cm wider in that part (up to the square hole in the jig). That way, the side of the workpiece will sit 1 cm away from the edge of the hole, and the router bit will clear the entire width of the workpiece, which is useful for when I only put 2 shoulders on a tenon. I've also made sure that those guiding strips are dead square in relation to the edge that guides the router bit bearing.

Nice, I like it. One question - do you have any thoughts how a jig could be made that creates a tenon with rounded corners? My current process is to make a square-cornered tenon and then sand it down, but it’s a bit imprecise and not very quick so I’ve been wondering how a jig could be made to help out?
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 5 месяцев назад
Hi personally I just round them with a sharp chisel. I've also used them square on rounded mortises as the rounded space is good for glue squeeze out. Both methods are as strong as each other. I know trend do a jig for doing the rounded mortise and matching tennon although it costs around £200. Thanks for the comment cheers Anth.

Nice jig but this seems to simplify only one part of the equation, the tenon. You still need to measure for thickness of the tenon subtract that from the stock, divide that in half, set up the depth of the router and of course, more often than not, you will still need to take off .3mm because you erred on the side of caution…set your router up again, in this example, to 1.5mm finish your cuts…..and now there is too much slop! I’m being cynical of course, But unless I’m missing something here, It would be nice to see a jig engineered to address the tenon thickness at the same time. Nevertheless nice work.
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 2 года назад
Hi well, the answer to your question is to cut the mortise with a router with the required bit. And after you have cut the tenons i they are a little tight then just remove small amounts using a chisel. Personally, I never have had to readjust the router. Hope that helps Cheers Anth

Started a feeble attempt to make one of these and, in the true tradition of 'measure twice and cut once', I thought I had better check out the plans. I have sketch-up so I thought I would have a look at the plans. On the verge of slashing my wrists, I finally got it to work and appear on my monitor. Trouble is the dimensions, in the video, do not match the dimensions in the sketch-up plans. You have the base as 300mm x 300mm and the slide as 175mm x 250mm. I could not figure out, from the video, what size the centre cut-out or mouth is supposed to be. Measured 125mm from each end gives a mouth of 200mm x 110mm but the plan shows a mouth of 200mm x 100mm.
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 4 года назад
Hi I know the sizes on the video are slightly different to the sketchup model. But don't worry the mouth is accurate in the sketchup model and video version and both openings work as the slide guide is for the size of tenon you want to make. Hope that helps. I just winged it when I had made the video and had drawn up the Sketchup model after.

Awesome jig, how did you make the mortising hole to fit the exact dimensions of the tenoning? I didn’t see you cut it on the other piece of wood. Thanks.

Thank you so much. I'd made the mortice with a router and a 8mm router bit. Hope that helps you out. THANKS again
@lasicey
@lasicey 4 года назад
Dilia, I think it’s more the case that you cut your mortise first, at whatever dimension you want , and then set up the tenon jig to match. Top job Anth.

Both template and palm router are cleary not the best solution for the task. Palm routers have terrible height adjustments and for tenons you really need precision fit. Also it takes ages to turn 4 times the piece, also 4 times having a chance to srew it up while clamping. A simple sled on a tablesaw is way more accurate and easier to setup and use. Also more versatile and repeatable.
@AnthWood
@AnthWood Год назад
That was a mathematical equation in itself. What if you don't have a table saw? Or how about just use a spindle moulder for ultra precise fit. Then again how about hand cut joinery ie Japanese. Spelling is an art just joinery you can either do it or you can't.
@tamas7555
@tamas7555 Год назад
@@AnthWood it was stated this was the best solution which is simply not. Yes, my spelling is terrible.

Thanks for the video! I was wondering whether it's possible to cut the mortises with the Katsu router. I'm trying to figure out whether I can get away with it as my first router or I should go for a bigger one.
@AnthWood
@AnthWood 3 года назад
Hello, Yes you can cut the mortice's with the katsu although you would need a plunge base for it. Routers are very cheap now. If it were me I would go for plunge router which is the bigger type..
