▶Today's Puzzle◀
Today's puzzle is a kakuro variant by Genomico (thanks to Glum Hippo for the recommendation). It is a simply gorgeous creation and we urge everyone to give it a go! You can play the puzzle here:
git.io/JUgwF
Rules:
Fill some white cells using digits 1-9, such that the sum of each block of digits equals the clues in the grey cells. A clue above a diagonal applies to the block of digits to its right. A clue beneath a diagonal applies to the block of digits below it. Within a block all digits are different. Some cells remain empty. All empty cells are traversed by a single closed loop that travels horizontally and vertically and doesn’t cross or overlap itself.
Advice for using the software interface for today's puzzle: The "Tab" option can be used to adjust what the Tab button does on the keyboard. If you tick Surface/Line - normal/Candidates then you can Tab between these functions to allow you to shade/draw the loop/enter digits respectively.
**************************************************************
Congratulations to Clover, who Sam has chosen as the winner of the competition to solve his barbaric puzzle. If you've not tried it, you can play it at the link here:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/we...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages digits sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits cannot repeat in a cage. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the cells on the indicated diagonal. Digits may repeat along the diagonal.
Sam has made a video demonstrating the solution path to the puzzle, which patrons of the channel can watch here:

I solved it! I'm ridiculously proud of myself for figuring it out. Around the 31:15 mark, I got stuck - I was stuck in the assumption that I HAD to turn down, but, simultaneously, recognized that I couldn't make the 30 work if I did...but also, what do I do about the 9-down clue in the column to the left? After grinding on it for awhile, I gave up, having assumed I had screwed the puzzle up, and started watching the solve... But before he got there, just listening to Simon explain himself being very methodical about the solution, I decided to pause the video and have another look. I knew I needed to fill in the bottom two rows, I knew I needed to fill in two of the 4 cells in the 9-down clue, and I knew I needed to keep at least 4 of the 30-down cells open, and I knew I needed to leave two exits and respect the 1-down clue...And I sorted it out :D I'm really way too pleased with myself, but this puzzle was quite challenging for me, so I'm glad I overcame. I had a ton of fun with this one

IIRC, last time they did a kakuro, Simon said something to the effect of, if you think kakuro puzzles are boring, you're absolutely right, and the solution is to play hand-crafted ones, since they're way better than the computer-generated ones in newspapers.

Thanks, Simon for mentioning my name. I am glad the tool is being useful. Another recommended settings: Tab Selector - Surface, Composite, Candidates Surface - Select your 2nd color of choice and you can always get Green Color using Right Click, no need to switch between two colors. Composite - Select Loop - Line or x. Then you can insert crosses using right-click on where the loop cant turn. Remember to PANEL: ON for mobile devices to open the keypad for entering numbers while in Number mode. Edit: New Update Released - PANEL will automatically show up on mobile and iPad, user doesn't need to do any step. Edit: (28th Nov 2020) - New Update Released - There is a Sudoku solving mode. This behaves almost similar to CTC app with z,x,c,v for the shortcuts. You can use Tab Selector as well instead. Happy Solving :)

What an amazing puzzle. Not too difficult, I'd say, took me under 25 minutes. I do a lot of Yajilin and Kakuro and the solving path is pretty much straight forward. Like Simon, I had some trouble at the end, finding out what is going on with the 2 clue and the crowded middle row. This construction is absolutely genius, it contains every bit of logic that Kakuro and Loop puzzles have to offer. The finish using the unclued middle row is fantastic. I take a bow.

Not sure if that's cheating or not, but was it safe to assume that every "lonely" cell that's not attached to any given clue & has less than 9 cells in its block is automatically an empty cell? Because such a cell having a digit would imply that the solution doesn't have a unique answer anymore and therefore would be broken, since no clues can help to give it a digit, and as there are less than 9 cells in its block, even if all other cells had a different digit, the "lonely" cell would still have at least 2 different possible answers. I filled in those lonely cells in the grid as "automatically empty" and I reached the same answer as you did..
@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby 3 года назад
The usual view seems to be that you should not only _find_ a solution but also *prove* that it is a unique solution. That means that you shouldn't assume uniqueness in order to solve the puzzle. Obviously in a speed-solve competition, all that matters is showing a completed grid and it would be mad for them to give you a puzzle that didn't have a unique solution, but for a connoisseur the challenge is to prove it.

This was a brilliant solve! I got stuck at the beginning as C1 and C3 both had 0 clues and by reading the clues, I was thinking it's a snake that mustn't touch itself so I had to watch the video to understand what was going on. A very linear solve by a brilliant constructor. I did think the choice of shading could've been better, as the green numbers were hard to read on green cells. I personally used Yellow for numbered and Purple for looped. Green numbers stood out on Yellow cells. Another option was the classic Odd-Even pair we use on CTC, Orange and Blue - Green numbers stand out on orange cells (or blue cells).

That was a fun one! I do have a question: is it possible to color some squares purple right off the bat if no clues point to them? I thought it might impact the uniqueness if that's not the case, but seeing how the middle row impacts the placement of 2 makes me question myself...! For a concrete example, for the row 4th from the bottom, the second to last column doesn't have a clue pointing to it. Is it safe to assume that this square is not going to have a digit?

This was so much fun! Kind of felt like a detective story :) Entertaining enough to first solve on my own and then watch Simon solve (faster but oh well)

43:59 Didn't we already know the cell to the left from the 3 has to be loop? If it's a digit we have absolutely no information on how to disambiguate it

He was having a senior moment. Actually multiple times in the video he did not notice the obvious.

I think it's just because Simon's not assuming there to be a unique solution. If we assume that at the end of the puzzle everything was the same as in the final solution except that cell to the left of the 3 was not loop (and assume that somehow all of the puzzle constraints were still met), then that cell could contain any of 4,5,6,7,8,9 and there would be 6 possible solutions. Simon rarely assumes (if ever) that there is a single solution.

I'm pretty sure Simon always assumes there's a unique solution because that's the nature of these puzzles - you don't get good ratings nor is it easy to verify correctness of the puzzles in software if they have multiple solutions

I think it's better to prove it's not loop and that there's a unique solution.

@@zelassin Whether or not you should use the unique solution constraint when solving is a matter of preference. I personally avoid using it for most things unless I'm stuck, but I do use it unlike bifurcation which I'd usually rather give up than use.

I think an important thing to notice in a kakuro like this, is that the cells that have no number looking at them should always be "loop". Like c4r3 and c11r12 for example

I love seeing other types of puzzles on this channel, as long as the quality is as high as in this one. Someone else said, it’ NOT called ‘Cracking the Sudoku’, after all. Having said that, I would hate to see the channel go less than at minimum 50% Sudoku.

At 41:18, you can use the null clue. One of those cells isn't in any row or column with any numbers on it. Unless you can affix a value with sudoku, which you can't, it will only be unambiguous if it is part of the loop.

I think this was my first kakuro ever, and it was a real joy to solve. Thanks for showcasing it, and I'd certainly love more pencil puzzles once in a while! Now, if all kakuros are like this... wait, if this is "the best kakuro ever", does it mean no other will be as good?

Enjoyed this one a lot! I don't think it's hugely difficult, but it's a narrow solution path.
