** OUR NEW KILLER SUDOKU APP IS JUST OUT ON ALL PLATFORMS - LINKS BELOW **
Today's puzzle is by Phistomefel and it's called Yin-Yang Sudoku. It should go without saying with his puzzles but this is a quite incredible sudoku. Play it at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules: Normal Sudoku rules apply. Some cells have to be coloured grey. All grey cells have to be orthogonally connected. All white cells have to be orthogonally connected, as well. No 2x2-region may be completely covered by grey cells, or completely covered by white cells. The clues outside of the grid indicate the sum of all grey cells in the respective row or column.
The puzzle was published on Logic Masters Germany here:

athin's Yin-Yang puzzle, which Phistomefel recommends as a way of teaching yourself how these puzzles work, can be found here:

I often try the puzzle, get stuck, watch the video until there's an "a-ha" moment, pause the video, go back to the puzzle. Sometimes when I next get stuck, come back and unpause the video, it takes a few seconds before I can tell that I _have_ unpaused it, Simon is very good at staying _perfectly still_ when he's thinking in silence 🤣

When I first found this channel I thought to myself how the hell do you solve these kinds of puzzles with no digits. After subscribing I've learned so much and now I don't hesitate to throw myself at whatever you post. But I can honestly say this is the first puzzle I've tried (though, in all fairness, I've only done a fraction of the ones posted) that I couldn't eventually solve...hell I had no clue even where to start. So I "cheated" and looked at the first few minutes of the video to try to understand the thought process, as I have never done a similar puzzle before. After sort of getting a grasp of it, I started coloring the grid, checked the video and to my great relief I hadn't gotten it wrong. From there on the solve was pretty straight-forward. I just want to say thank you to CtC for teaching us so much and to the people who contribute in the comments, and most importantly to the artists who create the puzzles. Thank you, thank you. And Merry Christmas to all!

I love how these are literally two separate puzzles, altho you can't solve either without the other... so I guess they aren't separate at all. But I love that you can solve the Yin Yang regions without having a single digit in the grid (other than pencil marks), and then work on the Sudoku. Great stuff.
@CapKhoury
@CapKhoury 3 года назад
Exactly. The fact that you don't need digits is all the more amazing because you DO need the pencilmarks. Just knowing what possible numbers of gray cells each row/column sum could admit is not enough to solve the Yin Yang.

This puzzle is really impossible to solve without knowing that the boundary consists of two contiguous pieces, one of each color, because otherwise there will be two pieces of the same color separated by two pieces of the other color, so the path joining the grey pieces will isolate the white pieces just like if there is a checkerboard pattern in the grid. Beautiful puzzle!

I stared at this for about 20 minutes without knowing where to begin. Then I saw the opening sequence of coloring, which led to more coloring ... and eventually I was able to get all the coloring done. Then I had to attack the actual Sudoku part, which had its own challenges. In the end, it took me 50:08 from the moment I started filling in the grid, so about 70 minutes in all. I'll take it. (Commenting before seeing if Simon spots it.) @37:00 Pursuing the 9 column: Only 1 of the 3 can be grey. Coming out on row 5 breaks the 17 or 24. Great puzzle. Having not done Yin/Yang before (though cave puzzles are similar) I found myself staring at an empty grid going "I have no idea how to start". I'm exceedingly happy I was able to back up and ponder the properties of Yin-Yangs and deduce the crucial fact about the perimeter that was the break-in. The wonderful thing about Phistomefel's puzzles is that they keep having you stop and say What the heck next? and then there keep's being just one more thing you can do if you look long enough. Made a hash of the Sudoku after finishing coloring, though. Kept overlooking sums.

When you got stuck around 39 minutes, I think I found the next piece of logic necessary... Which of the three white cells in column eight can be extended? If it's row four then both white cells in column 7 must connect living only two greens and column seven - broken! If it's in row five, it would have to be column six seven and eight turned gray and then the other white and column 6 to connect the two sections. If you tried to if you tried to put the two grays in row six, you'd also have to fill column seven again breaking column seven therefore the two gray cells that extend off of column nine must be in row 5! EDIT-well he shot that down pretty quick!LOL I forgot about connecting col 6

Just started watching, not seen any of the solution yet. Obviously the perimeter cannot be broken into 4 sections of grey and white; one of the pairs could not be connected. So if the top row had one color in the middle and another at the ends, the end color would have to continue all around the rest of the perimeter. And we can see that the bottom row is neither 0 or 45 so it needs both colors. At least one of the sides has to be all grey or all white.

I admire your ability to think of very complicated things. But I get frustrated when you almost always miss to fill in just one single cell left in a particular region. And it happens most of the time when you are solving that region and then leave it when there's just one cell left to fill. But great job in finding the labyrinth of grey and green cells! What I did there was try to create a path without lifting the pen. And then just modify as necessary. And I happen to come up with just the same labyrinth so I guess that's the only solution that would satisfy the given parameters.

@stevieinselby
@stevieinselby 3 года назад
It's a bad idea to use white for a specified purpose in these puzzles because then if you're looking at a white cell, you can't tell if it's white because you've decided it _has_ to be white, or uncoloured because you haven't resolved it. The way around that would be to colour the whole grid in green to start with, and then ungreenify cells when you know they are white...

If you want a hint (It's what eventually got me going)... (SPOILER) Any two white circles on the perimeter have to be connected by white circles on the perimeter, and similarly for any black circle. In other words, you can only have one section of each colour around the perimeter.

Did I misunderstsnd the rules? Some cells are white, some are gray and all are connencted. But why has the finished solution only green and white cells? Where are the white cells? Simon: This solution is wrong, because there are no connected white cells.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 3 года назад
He's using green to represent "white" cells. He just needs to distinguish starting cells (white) from filled in "white' cells. He could have filled in the whole grid a different colour at the start and turned them white as he progressed, but it was simpler to use another colour to represent the "white" cells in the solution.

Disclaimer: I am not a Sudoku player. But, I have a question about the game if anyone can help me. I am a programmer and decided to make my own Sudoku game for the challenge of it. When checking a basic puzzle, is verifying the rows, columns and boxes enough to verify an accurate solution? If I read each column, each row and each box, put the digits in numerical order, I should get 123456789 for each row, column and box. Is that enough to verify or do I need a more robust check? Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I could be wrong, you won't really have to check the box. It is part of the ruleset yes, but I don't think it's possible to repeat a digt in a box and still maintain no contradictions in rows or columns what i mean to say is, you probably would just need to check for repetitions in rows and columns. The boxes will work themselves out. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

@@wren4077 If row1 and row 4 are offset by 1 number so that row 1 is 123456789 and row 4 is 912345678 and you have a valid solution with box having 123456789 and you swap rows 1 and 4, the rows will still all have 123456789 and the columns will still have 123456789 but the box will fail the test.
