This is helpful (I've used it myself for embedding certain LUTs into a custom profile) but it's important to note that nothing is lost or gained from this. This is changing the native gamma 1.8 bump that Adobe normally applies back to the scene Linear gamma of raw sensor data. It's more for display than anything, but registers as a shift in contrast. There's not new information being revealed, just a different base expression of that existing information. The file is the file regardless. And to that other issue, you have to import the new profiles into LIghtroom CC for it to transfer to Lightroom Mobile. Classic lives in its own world. It's super annoying because I had to reimport and refavorite all of my custom profiles in CC just to get it on mobile and I don't even use CC.

I see what you are saying, but there is an open ticket/bug that adobe has not fixed. Even if the profiles are loaded to both applications (and this the cloud) the smart previews never display properly. Thanks for your insight on the first part 💪🙏

Everyone talks about the linear profile, but no one talks about the loss of detail in the shadows after applying such a profile. The curved detail cannot be pulled out, and the sliders are designed to work with already profiles from Adobe only.

My main motivation for using a linear profile is to recover my highlights by using the full dynamic range of my R5's sensor. However, for the rest of the image, the profiles offered by CANON (Neutral, Standard or Landscape) are quite pleasant. And I have a hard time finding contrast, saturation and colorimetry, playing with Lightroom's sliders to get closer to them once the linear profile has been selected. Do you have a strategy to share (even if it has to be adapted to everyone's sensitivity)? Thank you so much.

I’m assuming everyone’s raw files are different but I usually do have to boost the contrast and +dehaze as well as drop blacks from time to time. Also +vibrance and saturation to taste

I used linera profile with my Olympus raw because Lr work terrible with this files. But this strategy (workflow) is based on the Adobe Standard profile. In this way the color management (strategy) is conditioned on Adobe standard profile. Ok, but it's not a free choise (artistic choise).

I've just added a linear profile for my Z7ll. Once imported and applied l've had people say l should then hit the 'Auto' on LR Classic. Is that correct or should l just make all the adjustments manually?

Whichever you prefer. I personally prefer to make my own edits instead of relying on the program that is trying to make sense of how you shot the photo in the first place (in terms of exposure)

Thanks, and how to create linear profile with accurate color profile? i have colorchecker card, i can create color profile but how to combine it with this linear profile so they work together? or this one can do differently? If we install a linear profile, how can we then attach a profile of the accurate color created with colorchecker?

Great question and I’m not going to lie. This is beyond my scope of knowledge- there is a tab within the tool to calibrate a color checker if memory serves- but I do not have experience with this. Hopefully the community can help!

Hi Denis, maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the calibrated workflow is independent and superior to the approach described in the video in term of speed and accuracy in the reproduction of the details in shadows, highlights and tone. (It ignores the embedded profile in the DNG image when creating the calibrated profile.) However, in case when the calibration is not available, with the linear or flat profiles people get the most generous room for post processing without loosing details in tone, shadows and highlights.

Yup, it’s a lesser known tip but does wonders. Just like screen color calibration.

I wish adobe would give the option to have these flat profiles baked into Lightroom much like camera and lens profiles for lens corrections

@@Secondcropcreative well i just realize that i have to increase exposure and contrast just to get a better suitable image, but i guess is due to the more hdr from the profile.

I get a 999 error on trying to open DNG Profile Opener app. What's the workaround the error message?

@@Randyrocker1 without knowning exactly what the problem is I would double check these two things: 1 - that you have the right program (The DNG Profile Editor) - that page has a few different applications on it 2 - That you are trying to open a DNG file and not your camera's actual RAW file - you will need to convert it to a DNG in lightroom 3 - as a final result try googling or getting on the adobe forums with the exact error message (sorry I couldnt be more help!)
