I got laid off last summer at a job for a big factory. I have always mowed and done landscaping on the side so I told my wife I was gonna start my own landscaping/tree business so I bought a truck and a 7x16' dump trailer. Did awesome till end of October and it started getting slow which I was expecting but then my transmission went out in my cummins.... that hit me hard 7k right out of no where. December killed me but now January is here and God is flowing work in from every where. Tornado hit here first of January which helped me catch up with clean ups. You just got to go out and hand out business cards and show people you are trying they will most of the time give you work.

Bro. I've owned my business since 2001. Lots of ups n downs. Finding Labor was the hardest for me. At my highest I had 5 guys 2 trucks sealcoating landscaping lawn maintenance now I'm 1 guy. 1 truck doin 10 lawns a week. I'm burnt out n frustrated. I want to get completely out since now I'm a custodian. The fail is real. Falling hard hurts. Tired of being a slave to the business. Mad respect dawg! Thank u

I started my business last year and now I have 3 trailers new 2500 truck and over 50 weekly lawn mowing customers plus regular maintenance customers on yearly contracts im booked out at least 3 weeks out all the time.

We been booming since we started. In the winter we did leaf removal, pipe insulation, and gutters. We shoveled snow the few days it snowed also.

I got this. Keith, you receive information when you are at the point you are ready for it, and usually that is after you hit the wall (experience the smack). Resolute, rethink, ramp up (your message)! I couldn't help but think about the RB in football. You can grind, push, and work for inches. Telegraphing everything in a predictable manner if you continue to bulldoze. Or you could, review the field of play and data... Work off field to stay light, head up, honing the skill of the bounce, and avoid tackles. Put the ball where you intend to be. Anyway, I haven't been inspired in months. Thank you. And for the person who said you seemed depressed. It seemed you were just reflecting on your own struggles and wish that truly not to happen to others or empathizing (my take). My guess is that person hasn't experienced the smack yet. More reps, more reps, then switch it up!

Dude this hit right on the spot. I’m in my second year and I got a call for a bunch of condos that needed landscaped. Me and another guy are the only ones working in the winter months. Ended up being a month in a half project day in and day out, I got no sleep becuase I undercharged the whole thing. I wasn’t able to pay my guy for 3 weeks due to cash flow issues. I would like to say that I have learned my lesson on pricing but I’m sure that I will find myself into another pickle.

I got this. At the end of last year I took over a landscape supply and maintenance business on top of my mowing business. I was a lot to take in all at once. By the end of last year I was broke down mentally and was looking for a way out of the business. I just can't see myself doing anything else and watching videos like yours here really gets the juices flowing again!

This was interesting. From the points you make I can see where I'm lacking and where I'm excelling. For example, I'm in my second year of my hardscaping/landscaping business. My first year I landed an $80k job. Really it should have been more like $150k now looking back on it. But the big problem was that I did it myself with just one other guy. Took us 8 months. 8,000 sq.ft. backyard. I'm proud of the results and the customer is very happy. In a way I feel prideful that I was able to achieve such a monster job mostly by myself with one helper. But I see that's also not sustainable or smart. So I can land the big jobs, my problem is I work harder not smarter and don't charge enough. At the time I was nervous about asking for 80k. Funny how it all works.

10 years ago when I was 21 I worked for the most successful landscape company in my area, learned so much at a fast paste they made me a foreman with my own crew, I left so I can start my own business but I didn’t think things through because winter was around the corner 😂. I was told to apply at the Nissan manufacturing plant in my area to keep me busy during winter and then get back to doing my landscaping business in the spring. Well, I got sucked in the 9 to 5 and been here since.. started doing landscaping again but as a side hustle last year and fell in love all over again. Theres times I’d make twice as much on weekends then I do working 40 hours at $34 an hr lol. Unfortunately I’ve falling into this comfort zone where I’m afraid of change and risk of quitting my 9 to 5 after 10 years. Deep down I know My heart wants back into landscaping. I want to thank you for your videos, truly gives me that push to go full time and be my own boss once again. I gotta remind myself that God has my back, he’s blessed me tremendously this far

This is only the 3rd video of yours I've watched, and I WISH I could talk to you for about 30 minutes as a new, and I feel like an up-and-coming business. But we both know an educated talk, even at my small scale, with someone who is invested and prideful, it's more of a 1-2 hour talk. I am a small, small-scale start-up in a small farm town, and if you are interested, I would love to do one of your podcasts as a beginner, picking the brain of a very educated and strong-willed individual. Please read this comment, as I would love nothing more than to be able to pick your brain, as in a podcast setting, that's what the people really eating your easily digestive content would want. 3rd year in business, just bought out a 2nd lawn care company. It's definitely still a learning curve ahead. But doing the research and focus and talking to as many people as you possibly can who have been there or are going through it as well gets you through that path and to the other side. At the end of the day you are in sales ive learned. Confidence, attitude, the passion an pride you carry for your business goes along way in selling. I stopped the video @ 27:55. You killed it! It was not only inspiring but correct. But I have to add this, when my business boomed is when I gave it to God. I mean, REALLY gave it to God. I got out of the way and let Him work. My business tripled in less that 8 months. I didnt do anything diffeent other than pray, ask for guidance and when in doubt, I prayed harder 🙏. Also letting people take advantage of me by negotiating my bid. I always felt I had to play their game or I was going to lose business. Guess what, I got rhe job at their price and lost my ass. Not in the business but like the video. Its great and I talk to young kids, graduates, about the same. Will refer to them and remind them of the importance of detailing cash flow and record keeping.

You have to start charging more in this environment. You never know when you might get hurt or when out of the blue pains arrive and disappear the next day. You can never rely on employees. I had many that just don't show up. I now work by myself, have 2 trucks in case one breaks, 2 of each(blowers, mowers, line trimmer, hedgetrimmers). Now I don't do high trimming. Mainly mowing, edging, light trimming on smaller easier homes all within 15 miles if where I live. And I started investing ... I really hate warm hot days and try not working more than 7 hours per day. ... I got this since this is the only job I know 💪

Hey Keith, it's our 3rd season this year just north of you here in Michigan. I'm only 33 and developing tendonitis in both elbows, it's hard to do much of anything physical, I barely made it through fall cleanups last year and scaled back advertising at the time. It's making me focus more on the entrepreneur side of things because I just can't be the laborer anymore. So I need to scale faster and hire more employees. We've got this. It's very scary because my husband is ready to quit his 80k per year job to do this. I'm thinking that's scary! But if i can make 80k at my job, then maybe I'm only at 65k. We have three sons who want to help ages 13 11 and 8. So i know this is great for them to spend time with dad! I'm all in but scared at the same time. Right now it's a side gig.
