The 14 inch MacBook Pro has been with us for more than 2 years now, but in that time it's only gotten better! Now in the third generation of Apple Silicon chips, the 14 inch is a formidable workhorse- the perfect companion for a fortnight of traveling! So that's exactly what I took it for. In January I traveled to Japan and endeavored to prove that the 14 inch MacBook Pro is truly the bets laptop ever made.
Thanks to Sam from @AppleTrack and Norm from @TokyoLens for their input in the video!

I think the mid-2015 15-inch Intel MacBook Pro is still far superior, here's why : - All-day battery life (as long as I'm plugged into the charger) - Incredible performance (as long as I'm working from cloud cluster computing) - All-day fan noise - Great sound quality (as long as I use external headphones)

I love the Apple eco-system but honestly I think there is one thing Apple needs to do to truly offer the BEST laptop ever. Repairability/replaceable and upgradable parts. I don't care if they use their own proprietary system for this, but to truly make their laptops the BEST, you need to be able to upgrade the RAM, storage and easily replace components. That lack of repairability is a huge pill to swallow and for some like myself the eco-system is worth the lack of repairability as well as their machine's incredible durability. But that is not a pill everyone can swallow. If they truly want to take over they need to make their systems repairable/upgradable.
@sturmx96
@sturmx96 2 месяца назад
I think it's impossible to upgrade stuff especially now after they swapped intel to their own SOC. They all are soldered into the motherboard now.
@angelahornung8488
@angelahornung8488 2 месяца назад
@@sturmx96 I don't think its impossible for their SOCs to be upgradable/repairable in a reasonable manner where an average user could do it. There is a potential somewhat new standard for RAM called CAMM. Who knows if it will take off but it has a lot of the benefits of soldered ram without being soldered. Apple could create their own mechanism if they wanted to, that would allow the same chips they use now and hold them in place without solder. I've attached a video talking about it below if you're interested. The video is a bit energetic rather than explanatory, but it does hit some key details. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WXp4g-KzdAI.html

Im a huge fan of my M2 Macbook Air with the base configuration - i bought it to enter the mac space, and didnt want to spend more than i needed to. I briefly had a Mac Pro 13 M2 before getting buyers remorse and returning it because i was using my ipad pro 12.9 with the magic keyboard. But i wanted a full fledged laptop that can do light editing, if i had a need to, and basic every day tasks. Ill keep this macbook air and eventually get the pro in the future!!

“Would I take it on an international work/vacation trip?” Yes. I did, twice. I got the M1 Max 14” as a work machine when it was still relatively new and I loved it. I got it instead of the 16” for the better portability. At home I had an external display, so no need for the bigger screen. Since I worked remote the company had two “off site” trips a year, and one was in Mexico and another was in Canada. Most of the team had 16” laptops, but they were so big and heavy I didn’t regret getting the 14”.

Glad you enjoyed your time in Japan @lukemiani ! It's already been a few months and you're since left but a belated "welcome to Japan!" What hotel did you stay in in Hokkaido? It looked beautiful? As for the topic - I've been using a 15" for decades (my first mac laptop was the first Intel Core 17" - really nice laptop in it's day). While the 14" is more transportable, I still think the 15" overall wins. More space (I'm a software developer) matters a lot. When it comes to using a plane, I usually end up either using an iPad or trying to sleep (as work is busy once you land!) All the best from Japan!

I am finally planning on buying my first ever MacBook Pro (the 14" M3 Pro) here in about 5 months. I have seen & held the 14" in my hands a couple of times & it just feels so right & good in my hand & unlike the 15" MacBook Air, I didn't think or feel like I would inadvertently break the hinges just opening & closing the MacBook Pro 14" & I like the thicker chassis (It's not like you're carrying or holding a brick unlike PC's.) For a on the go computer, I 100% agree that the 14" MBP is the way to go.

Bigger not always better ... I immediately went for the 16in MBPro when the M1 version was released but once getting it, realized so big and heavy that I simply didn't travel with it. Sold it off and bought 14in MBPro and it was perfect. Related, I immediately bought the 2018 12.9in iPad Pro when released and similarly found it too hefty and rarely used it. Sold it off and bought 11in iPad Pro and found it equally perfect!

Different opinion here. I had the 14inch M1 Max before and why I went with Max chip is just because how fast the dual-encoder/decoder is. And things went down when I worked while traveling. I used Cinema 4D a lot and the top status bar is so small that the software's menu can't be fully displayed (thank you Apple for the notch). It is also way too small to squeeze all the pages in, in just one software.(This may be my personal case, the software I use does require many pages to be opened.) And also the battery on 14inch died so fast. I can drain the battery from 100% to 30% in only 3 hours, while only making PowerPoint!! This really gave me anxious while traveling with this laptop, and forced me to go to 16inch eventually. It did give me at least 2 more hours of heavy use. I did suffer a lot when carrying it due to the weight while traveling. Anyway, your video is so fun to watch. I can smell my stinky ROG laptop crying loud too.

Good way to get hurt too, unless you really know what you are doing. Luke is a good tech reviewer, but on present evidence, an unskilled skier. Yeah, he did not belong on the steep slope, which by the way, was an easy one. No ice, no bumps, no gates. Contrast with Joanna Stern, who wisely skied with the Vision Pro under carefully controlled conditions: on a beginner slope, doing easy beginner wedge turns, with nobody else on the slope, by prearrangement. Respect your environment, and the skills it takes to be in it. BTW, check out a video called the "Happiest skier in the world," also shot in Japan, on similar trails. Pure joy! It is better to be a really skilled skier with an iPhone, than a beginner with the most expensive camera in the world. Luke, take care. Steps in learning cannot be skipped. Overconfidence, and not knowing what you don't know, can get you in a lot of trouble here. The mountain is the master. You can learn this the easy way, or the hard way. Learning takes years, and there is no tech "fix" for this. But if you like it, stick with it. Get a coach. It can be great. Ski while we still have snow!

As a child I carried around a thinkpad T61 everyday and everywhere so I’m used to oversized laptops and am willing to live with that downside if it means I get better battery and more screen real estate Also theoretically quieter fans but that’s not an issue on any Apple silicon machine to begin with And yes, I was 5 when I had my T61, I got it as a hand me down from my father when he upgraded his work laptop

My Mac performance needs are modest; I’m still doing great with my 2020 M1-nothing 13-inch MacBook Pro. But that slightly larger and better quality screen along with extra performance sounds ideal for my eventual upgrade. I would go for the 14" over the 16" for travel. I have a 17" gaming laptop, and it is not portable. Meanwhile, I travel with a 2009 13" MacBook Pro 5,5, and it does the job keeping me entertained on long flights while keeping a small footprint and being lightweight. When I get a chance, I'll probably pick up a used 14" M1 Pro MBP for travel.

The 14" makes the most sense. The dilemma for me is I am upgrading from a 15" MacBook Pro, which is perfect for me personally. If I purchase the 14" I'm going to feel like I am losing some of what am used to, and enjoy, but if I go 16" I am going to love having that extra size, but at times it might be less practical.

I was worried about desktop space vs my 16" Intel MBP, but to my surprise, setting the 14" scaling to "More Space", and the 16" to "Default", there's actually a bit more desktop space, despite being quite a bit smaller, so if your eyes can focus on a bit smaller text, there's no real benefit to go for the bigger 16", which got 200 grams heavier with the Apple Silicon, it's a full 600 grams, or a 13" iPad Pro heavier in 16" today. The Apple Silicon 14" actually also have almost the same resolution as the old 16" Intel, though the new 16" has higher resolution and even more desktop space.

I hope someone will answer my question: Does the trade-in value for, say, a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" vary depending on what one spends on a new Apple MacBook Pro? That is, for the same trade-in MacBook Pro, will Apple offer more if I buy a 14" M3 Max than if I buy a 14" M3 base model? Or will the trade-in offer be the same? Thank you.

Pretty sure it’s fixed. If you’re looking for the best value, going either ebay or another 3rd party will get you more for your device. Apple trade in is simpler / more convenient though.

Love my 14” m3pro Pro! I travel with it daily and wouldn’t really want the 16. I actually kind of miss my 13” air tbh.

Those opening clips alone were fun and something new. Makes me feel like you should collaborate more with the likes of Sam and Prosser, using apple products or even broader tech whilst traveling / abroad. Just a thought.

I grabbed this model, had a 16” M1 Pro in the past, and much prefer this size. I can get almost 3 8 hour work days out of a single charge, running Citrix. Also it runs silent, unlike my company Dell 7440….

You're lucky that Niseko and the rest of Hokkaido gets so much snow. If it wasn't natural snow then all of those falls on the skis would have been a lot more painful. I really hate the fact that in Europe there are pretty much no slopes left that are all natural snow. The fake snow from the snow cannons is basically ice in powder form that immediately becomes ice again when lying on the mountain, so it's a very different skiing experience to that in Japan. I really wanna go snowboarding there again...

Currently, my favorite laptop is my M1 MacBook Air. I’m just an average user and I bought it brand new from Best Buy for less than $800.

It's a perfect laptop with top notch value. Sold mine few weeks ago as I went to 14" M3 Pro (multi monitor support). Anyway, got a 16 GB second hand for 800 euros one year ago. Sold it a year later for 700 euros. Made tens of thousands on it. Perfect laptop and I know guy using it now is very happy with it too.

The 16 inch doesn’t add more to the keyboard so the extra space there is just used for speakers.
