The best lens for the GH5s*

The Panasonic GH5s is a great camera - small/portable, easily accessible features, loads of video options, etc. The functional continuous AF (thanks to the hack described by YodaYeo) makes it the (almost) perfect travel camera. It has a few shortcomings though (primarily the lack of IS). Finding the best lens to pair with this camera is critical. For the reasons described, I believe the best lens for this camera is the Pana-Leica 12-60mm lens.

This is amazing. Your fix to change shutter angle to 179 deg fixed my auto focus tracking issue by nearly 100%, I am just working on my other settings to create the best videos + pictures from my GH5S. THANK YOU!

Hi John. Why does the background focus continuously? It looks like a heart beat rhythm. It does not looking nice. I'll buy these days GH5s and it scares me. Is there a solution for it? Thank you.

The 12-60 is a great lens for events where changing lenses is just not practical (or you might miss a moment)- I also own the 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 which are always my go tos for controlled shoots. The Olympus 7-14 is an Architecture buster glamour lense if you are shooting that sort of content (I do and its a stellar wide angle lense) I have to say my all time favourite favourite is the Voigtlander 25 f.095 - but with GH4 / 5s you need to pair that up with a monopod. You can go handheld with the GH5 thanks to its IS. You WILL need nds if you want that lens to give you focus fall off in daylight thought.

Matt Holder thanks Matt. I agree as I hace the 12-35 and 35-100 version 1. They are so compact and the fixed aperture is nice. One thing I didn’t expect was a big difference with dual IS in this lens versus those. It seems a noticeable amount better. Checked out your channel and it looks like you are in Australia. It's actually slightly wider because of the slightly larger sensor 21mm equivalent at the wide end.

TAPP Channel I love it for travel and as a single all around lens. It’s the one lens I tend to leave on the camera. If not this lens, then getting the 12-35 and 35-100 2.8 lenses is the other very good option.

The only things that bugs me is the fact that the focus ring doesn’t have hard stops on the native lenses 😕.

maurice porcelain I have heard that the dual IS is absolutely amazing on the GH5 with this lens. Honestly, I haven’t taken it off the GH5s as I’ve been shooting almost exclusively with this camera and love the AF and the high ISO. Thanks for watching.
