These Viltrox Epic anamorphic lenses are far better than I was expecting. Unfortunately I do not get to keep the set but wow!
I hope that you see the pros and cons of these lenses and why 1.33x squeeze is far more usable with 16:9 and 17:9 sensors more so than 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 and 2x anamorphic lenses.
Besides the anamorphic squeeze factor the price has a lot to do with these not being very popular. They appeal to filmmakers who have a much larger budget than the average person.
What do you guys think?

I've never used them but I've also never seen a single bad thing written about them. From everything I've seen these are among the best "budget" cinema lenses you can get! Budget in the sense of what typical cinema glass costs and making the reasonable assumption that if you purchase these you are using them to make money!

These have always reminded me of the Hawk Vantage lenses and they share some mechanical similarities. Both have modified iris blades that close into an oval shape. The Hawks are completely aspherical but achieve an anamorphic bokeh look because of the iris shape. The Viltrox also do this but combine it with a genuine anamorphic block so you get a hybrid that enhances the elongation of the bokeh way beyond what 1.33x would imply - in fact the bokeh is pretty similar to what I have on my Vazens at 1.8x and my Aivascope 1.75x. I think it's a fantastic approach and probably my favorite anamorphic lenses on the market at almost any cost right now. You get some anamorphic character, bokeh that's fantastic, great barrel distortion ( with the exception of the 35 ) and the lenses are clean enough to use on almost any gig where you'd normally use aspherical but still can be amped up with charter in post for narrative work. If that's not enough, if you don't own a camera that supports open gate shooting modes the 1.33x gives great results on the vast majority of 16:9 sensors out there. Because of the mechanical design you get relatively close focusing ( compared to many other anamorphics ) that allows me to leave diopters back at the studio most of the time unless I need some wild looking macro style shots. Way underrated by those who haven't had a chance to use them IMO.

Awesome video, so useful! One minor correction: 50mm does not have filter thread. It just looks like thread but it's not. So for filtration you must use matt box. Anyway, these lenses are very strong set. I bought 50 mm for try and was really surprized when it blow away my modified Leica M set I use for my spherical work. Going to add 35 and 75 to my kit. My prime cam FX6. I've rented different chinese lenses before (DZO, Laowa, Meike) but usually was dissapointed. These Viltrox are first chinese lenses I decided to buy.

I’m not even a fan of 2x anamorphic. I feel like 1.66 is the most I would ever want to shoot to get that extreme bokeh and flare. 1.33 is the best for moderate look but still getting the feel. I’ve been eyeing that viltrox but I don’t shoot enough unique projects to justify the cost.

Hopefully, Sony makes those moves, but this is how they’ve always been and everyone that was on the Sony bandwagon were content to to just upgrade their body and Sony prefers that because of their general financial situation as a whole company. I am a Fujifilm shooter and Fuji has always been good about firmware updates and it seems like you have to plan your camera with updating in mind, be it with a slightly larger casing to withstand more heat or just so the camera OS is malleable enough to accept major updates. I suspect Sony hasn’t built their cameras for this kind of end use.

Sorry, but your video is misleading in a very important way. No resolution is actually lost when compared to a normal spherical lens. When we use anamorphic lenses we gain resolution in the squeezing and de-squeezing. So even if you have a 2X anamorphic lens on a 16:9 sensor and need to crop the sides to get the traditional widescreen aspect ratio, you are NOT actually losing resolution. You are simply getting less resolution than you would have gotten before cropping the sides. But overall, the image resolution should actually improve over a normal spherical lens on the same sensor (provided the lenses are comparable in sharpness and resolution).
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 11 месяцев назад
Cropping the sides is losing resolution. If you use a spherical lens that fits on the timeline perfect you don’t crop any off the sides and don’t lose resolution. I explained this very thorough
@thatchinaboi1
@thatchinaboi1 11 месяцев назад
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema You didn't explain that the anamorphic de squeezing increases resolution. 🤦
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 11 месяцев назад
@@thatchinaboi1 it doesn’t increase resolution. That’s physically impossible. Anamorphic filming allows you to film with the exact same portion of the sensor and a spherical lens. You may want to watch the video again. Once again, you cannot increase resolution unless you have a higher resolution sensor. Lenses don’t change resolution
