@Felipe M. thats right.. artists nowadays even need collaboration to create a hit.. nobody cares about quality anymore.. its all about whos doing it.. the producers want to hear poster names not the song's lyrics.. noone today can do it like dolly..
The song I read that it was a goodbye. Is there a connection to Jolene? I mean her man cheating with some other woman and that's why these two songs and the goodbye at the same day?
That’s because she wrote it for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after a seven-year partnership
@@donnamalfy6210 I remember when Whitney tried to sue Dolly so she could never sing it again. Will never forgive her for being so stupid as to not know Dolly not only wrote it but had #1 recording TWICE before WH even heard it.
Best part of this story is that her and Porter Wagner, whom she wrote this song for, had a falling out afterward and he was pretty terrible to her. Years later he was in major financial trouble and the IRS seized all his property, including his entire song catalogue. Dolly went to the IRS auction and purchased the entire catalogue, then gave it back to him for free. Shows that she truly meant every word of this song!
Just a slight correction. She said, "People just think of me as a dumb blonde. Well, I'm not really dumb & not really a blonde either." She's written over 4,000 songs, has amassed a huge fortune, employs 1,000 of people & brought her part of TN back from a deep red deficient to being profitable. Her literacy campaign sends any & EVERY child who's parent signs them up a book every month (FOR FREE!) from birth to kindergarten. She's a national treasure in my book!
No, Dolly made it a hit! Whitney tried to steal, but Dollys people found out and a small tussle happened, and after some money changed hands, Whitney re-recorded it!
Dolly said Whitney made this song famous..how humble she is to say that. The fact is this song is what made others famous. It was her written words that inspired others to sing it from their own hearts feelings. Dolly was an inspiration to others her whole career. She was like a message sent to inspire love and understanding to all she came in contact with.
Well, Dolly cashed a little fortune from the royalties she collected for Whitney Houston and others singing this song. ;-) And she said that she felt shattered and moved to tears when "I will always love you" was played during Whitney's funeral.
Maybe she's not as famous today but back in the day she was mega famous. And she's been honored with a massive number of awards, plus she is considered a living legend lol
A lot of people sadden about the fact that her being the original singer is very little known but let's not forget she wrote the song and agreed to the cover. Its success is hers forever. I mean, just in terms of royalties +_+
Dolly wanted Elvis to record this song, but he said he wouldn’t be giving any credit or money to Parton. So at the end she decided to release it herself
Technically it was his manager/producer who said that Elvis would like to record the song but before he would agree to do it he would require a 50% ownership/royalties of the song. I am glad that she stuck to her guns and said no. To be honest I don’t think it really would have suited him.
She wrote this for Porter Wagoner. She didn't know how to tell him she was leaving the show, so instead, she sang it to him in his office. Throughout the years, he sued her, to which she just responded by giving him a million dollars and continued to care for him. He blew all the money by partying, and tried to sue her again for a catalogue of music she owned. Instead of getting mad and fighting it, Dolly just said, "You can have it all for free". She took care of that man for decades, despite how awful he was to her, and she even went to his death bed and sang to him, holding his hand and keeping him company. This is the essence of unconditional love and the story of her great character. When she said, "I Will Always Love You", she meant it. No matter what he did, no matter how much he failed, she continued to love him until his dying day. Dolly Parton is an incredibly wonderful person.
I knew about her writing the song as a goodbye but I never knew that he sued her. I remember watching Porter and Dolly but I was 7 or 8 at the time so I don't remember a lot. My mom always liked Dolly because she was a poor mountain girl also. I remember hearing Coat of many colors on the radio and crying about the kids teasing her.
This version is way more dreamy, Whitney's rendition is much more powerful... Two types of love, sweet and intense. The 2 version complete each other, no need to give hate!
Always appreciated Whitney’s powerful and beautiful voice in her version, but I rly understood the true bittersweet tender feeling behind dollys original
Dolly is for when you’re sad and crying about someone. Whitney is for when you’re finally over the crying stage but knowing that person will always have a place in your heart.
@@solar901 I'm not entirely white and I'm not afraid to type it lol. Are you really japanese or is that only a nickname? Japanese people are inventors and creative people too.
Dolly's version is warm and sincere. Whitney's version is grand and breath-taking. I am blessed to know both version. Thank you for this gift to us all, Ms Dolly.
Nala Diradametha Dollys version of this song Is warm and sincere because it is her song. She wrote it and she’s feeling all the emotions connected with it while singing it.
Nala ! If you knew Dolly Partons version you can see that Withneys Version is only a Trash to make money ! Her Voice and screaming hurts in the brain ! No Feelings - only screeming !!
You can express your opinion without being rude. It’s a matter of preference but WH version was far from trash. Even Dolly would agree she took that song to new heights
It's actually sad to see that people didn't realise that this is actually dollys song edit: since a comment i made when i was like 13 blew up aha i know dolly doesn't mind and she makes a shit ton of money, i was talking about all the comments saying how they're shocked that they didn't know it was originally dolly's song, it's sad to me having grown up watching dolly, knowing how talented she is and how amazing this version of the song is, that she doesn't get a lot of recognition for it
Whitney sang the song with power and dolly sang it with emotion EDIT: Holy gods in Olympus! that's a lotta likes! This is the most I've ever gotten..thanks guys!
My dad had this 45 back in the day. I have always loved this, and listening to it now, I still get goosebumps. No one has ever done Dolly's songs better than Dolly. No one.
I’m so Sad that Dolly doesn’t get acknowledged for her song. It’s 2019 and I just realized. EDIT : It’s 2020 now I know the truth. Thank You, comments.
John C no she was a very famous artist maybe not on the same level as Whitney but still nothing to scoff at and dont underestimate the amount of money the south can give you like cmon fucking Garth Brooks is one of the best selling artists of all time in america and most ppl wouldnt recognise one of his songs
If my granddaddy was not absolutely in love with Dolly Parton when I was little girl, I probably wouldn't know that she sung this first either. He had all of her albums, we even played with paper dolls of Dolly that came with one of his albums, lol.
LOL yup people talking about how it's "sad" people think Whitney came up with it. Dolly ain't crying and if she is she's wiping those tears with $100 bills!
People sell songs all the time...DOlly got to record this song and have it reach no.1 on the charts and re-enter and hit no.1 again....and THEN get to sell it and make even more money off it. I am not sure why people are feeling a type of ways lol
writing songs for dolly is so easy, shes not bothered one bit as long as she gets some compensation.. today, people cant write shit as auto-tuned songs with uninspiring lyrics gets billions of cash noone cares anymore about quality..
@@ajollypanda4175 yeah I really don't understand why people get annoyed by the fact Dolly doesn't get credited for the song. Like she don't mind she just wants her cash, and I mean damn right she should that is a beautiful song!
Whitney sang it like a true diva. With the vocal pipes on 100 and the Hollywood Glam. Dolly sang it from her heart. You can feel the bitterness in her voice. That's her real life issues she put on this track. Both versions are really good.
for the collective world image the song will appear to be associated with Whitney. partly because it made the song famous and partly because we associate it with it anyway for its uncomplicated life given its tragic death which touched all of us. we love u whitney
Who else looked up this song, and “Jolene” when you found out she wrote both songs on the same day. Holy crap, that revelation gives a ton of perspective to both songs in conjunction.
Orion625 I love both songs and only learned today listening to ep 2 of the Dolly Parton’s America podcast that she wrote both on the SAME DAY! Wow. Just wow!
@@llawrence4834 She didn't say that. She corrected herself to say her home demo's of the songs were both on the same tape, so they must have been written close to each other, but not necessarily the same day.
Jolene wasn’t about her. She wrote the song after a woman on her show told her that her husband left her for another woman and they where all at the same show
This song is depressing when you hear about backstory. Whitney Houston just covered the song. Dolly Parton lived the song. When she said “i will always love you” to Porter Wagnor, she meant it. It just heartbreaking that Wagnor couldn't realize how lucky he was to have Dolly Parton in his life.
Dolly is an amazing person. She supported that man throughout his whole life, no matter how nasty he ever got, because she promised to always love him, so she did.
Dolly's version I feel is from the heart, well a broken one. It's so sad and bittersweet. Whitney gave the song a rather different meaning. I like both, but it's only through Dollys version that you really hear the words. Whitney brought the power, the diva and such an amazing voice, but Dollys version is so much more human and honest.
+Ben Wilson I feels from the heart because it IS..read up on it! Porter wanted her to stay...for the money..Dolly had to leave for her own sake! it's the best song, in my opinion, ever written, due to real feelings and events!
+Lee Boy If you read up on the story of this song you'll find out she IS singing to someone-Porter Wagoner who didn't want Dolly to leave his show..after all she was making him a lot of money. So she wrote this song especially AT and FOR him. :)
vincent schoenekase Too bad Dolly didn’t get a Grammy for it until 2007 while Whitney, on the other hand, took home THREE in 1994 . Opinions are subjective, I must admit, but to say Whitney’s suck because you like Dolly’s better is blasphemous 😂 .
@@gdxd7956 She credits that song with Porter finally letting her out of the various contracts and obligations which he held over; that allowed her to take the next steps of her career and leave him behind. Check out Dolly Parton's America podcasts
Dolly is the writer of this beautiful song. She wrote it for her mentor Porter Waggner. She sings it from her heart to him as she made her exit from his show. Elvis Presley wanted to purchase the rights to this song and Dolly said no. This song wasn't for sale not even to the King. Smart move for a Blonde Beauty. Love you Dolly!
dolly turn down to elvis becouse he wanted 50% of all sales while most right were 10%--20% she made right decision, dolly is no dummy she business smart.
For many years everyone wondered who Dolly wrote this song for. It was many years later during a reunion that she confessed it was written for Porter Waggoner who gave Dolly her start on a national stage. Dolly is very talented and is also a very smart business woman.
If i should stay Well, i would only be in your way And so i'll go, and yet i know That i'll think of you each step of my way And i will always love you I will always love you Bitter-sweet memories That's all i have, and all i'm taking with me Good-bye, oh, please don't cry 'cause we both know that i'm not What you need I will always love you I will always love you And i hope life, will treat you kind And i hope that you have all That you ever dreamed of Oh, i do wish you joy And i wish you happiness But above all this I wish you love I love you, i will always love I, i will always, always love you I will always love you I will always love you I will always love you
Dolly did in fact write this song. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner. She wrote it for him because he was having a hard time letting her venture out on her own after performing with him for 5 years. It was written as a professional breakup song not romantically.
To those who gave it a thumbs down must remember that without Dolly writing this song Whitney would never had the chance to sing it.... just saying... both have their own styles and do a great job of singing it.... however Dolly that was fantastic
I think Whitney did it better, as you can tell by the sells. Whitney made it famous. Clearly Whitney's version has way more vocals and is also way harder to sing so I would say no one can sing this song like Whitney. Dolly even said that.
+Slay Queen That is just another opinion, nothing more. Justin Bieber sold a crap ton of records but his music is cheap pop garbage. Sales number do no automatically reflect the quality of music. They are usually a result of popularity, which is a result of which artists are chosen by the record companies to get the most airtime. That is how it typically works in the industry.
They are they same song. No matter how much you say you like both equally, deep down you know you like one version better than the other. It is a literal (yes literal, I am using that word as intended) impossibility to like both songs equally.
We compare them because Whitney (good riddance) gets credit for the song. Sure, she sang okay, but it's like saying a Beatles tribute band is as good as The Beatles. Sorry, dude. It's not.
I didn't know this song was from Dolly Parton until today... In my opinion, Witney sings this song with passion and power, wich is great because shows her vocals strenght, and thus makes the song more remarkable, but on the other hand, Dolly sings with such tenderness that made the lyrics go much deeper. I never really cared for the lyrics at all, just to the way Witney sings them, but listening to Dolly almost made me cry! I love Witney, but this is another level right here...
As a 65 yo black man, I've listened to Dolly since the 70s. She and Porter Wagoner were the deal back then for folks who love the older country music. Plus, Dolly's voice is angelic!!
My mom told me. I don't know how she knew, because she wasn't particularly a country/western fan, but she even knew the backstory about Dolly writing it about Porter.
I love both versions equally - they're both interpreted in such different ways they feel like two different songs. Whitney's version is almost a bold proclamation with confidence while Dolly's feels more personal and vulnerable - like someone broken. How amazing that we have two amazing versions by two incredible women to represent different emotions depending on where we all are at a specific time in our lives. We should just be grateful rather than bitch about whose is better.
Kate C I agree. You can't compare two emotions. Whitney's is supposed to be empowering, and Dolly's is all about exposing and vulnerability. Its like comparing Pasta with Pizza and George RR Martin with Tolkein. Both extremely good in what they're doing and very different works.
that is true.. but whitney's version is too powerful she unleashes her voice on us and it's overwhelming.. i like the point about the interpretation. whitney's version is much more declarative like she's asserting her love.. whereas dolly's is softer and is either a fading reminder to someone who forgot.. or an almost painful elegy to her beloved :'( fucking beautiful
@@zusiphesikayi2390 Funeral perhaps but if you know the context of the song and read the lyrics, it's about expressing unconditional love while making the choice to remove yourself from their life. Unconditional love, good sentiment for a wedding, removing yourself...not so much.
Is no one gonna talk about that the the cover Whitney Houston made says, "and I will always love you" but the original by Dolly says, " *but I* will always love you"?
Lia Vazquez Dolly Parton ALLOWED her to use HER song she made for porter Wagner and sang to him when he was dying. Whitney had a good COVER, but this more about the pain of moving on instead of Whitney’s which is more of a silent “I won’t forget you”
twistknit1 she wrote it so she could leave because porter wouldn’t listen, but on his death bed she sang this to him. She also returned the studio she purchased to get out of his contract, saying it was one of her biggest regrets, hurting him like that. She had to purchase it cause he kept claiming a lot of her property and other funds were his under the studio, so she purchased and later returned it with this songs original lyric sheet on top of the return paper.
WE should nor compare Whitney and Dolly. They are legends on their own. Different styles and different voices but both great singers. Both versions of the song are different, of course they are. One was sang in 1974 and the other in 1993 and both singers put their heart and soul in the song. The result, we have the privilege to hear both
Her voice is so soft and pure. She’s so cute. I love both versions but I think I like this one better than Whitney’s because of the 60’s feel. They both sound amazing and they’re both queens.
That is a fun analysis. I was thinking too how much I appreciated seeing our history through seeing Dolly at this time. Of course the 90s were an important part of our history too, and the decade would have been nothing without Whitney's version. But it's fun to see the 60s and 70s through this. Her hair is the best part!
I grew up thinking that Whitney was the original singer and I just found out that Dolly was the original singer! I honestly prefer Dolly’s version better.
