I love the channel, I think you're using your hellhound wrong though... slap the heavy bolter on it and use it to throw the "remove cover" rule on things that the artilary will shoot at... the inferno cannon can then be used to shoot at things closer to home... it allows, with scout sentinels, for my manticores and basilisks to be hitting on 2's rerolling ones and ignoring all cover! preeeeeettty tastey combo there ;)

I'm trying out the melta turret with whole heavy bolter right now. The belta is good for all the reasons outlined in the video, but the heavy bolter is primarily there to reach out across the board and strip other units of cover. In that way it's kind of like a mini exterminator buff that I can use to strip minus one AP where needed to help my combined arms strategy and punch through some damage on priority targets.

I'll stick with a Heavy Bolter Bane Wolf supporting my infantry advance. A lot of people also tend to give it more attention than it probably deserves when they hear "anti-infantry 2" so it makes for a surprisingly good distraction carnifex and I'm definitely not complaining about that, my Malcadorn could use a break

I can see an argument for the Meltas, but ideally I have bigger, sturdier tanks to hunt elites and tanks. My Hellhound typically is to give my infantry squads something sturdy to rally behind, and to provide as many shots as possible to harass Infantry and strip their cover. I think both are pretty viable ways to run the Hellhound, depending on the other units supporting it and the type of units you're going against in your local meta.

For 15 more points you can take 10 rough riders for 10 pseudo-melta shots instead of 2 from the hound. They also get more movement and OC spread over more bodies... Better at clearing chaff using frag tips as well.the one drawback is that they "degrade" faster by taking casualties, but they are also a great target for reinforcements!
@theshamurai32
@theshamurai32 8 месяцев назад
@quincykunz3481 I love the rough riders. They're a real sleeper of a unit. I usually use them a bit more defensively as a bodyguard for Leontus and screening, but they pack a punch offensively when they make it to the target.
@quincykunz3481
@quincykunz3481 8 месяцев назад
@@theshamurai32 I think leo is better served by krieg meatshields since that lets him team up with a command squad to radio his orders everywhere, and frankly the rear echelons don't need a lot of mobility. And again, the rough riders are only *slightly* easier to kill than guardsmen point-for-point, but unlike guardsmen, your opponent doesn't want to leave the job half-finished because even a few lances sting like hell, so reinforcing them is easier than with infantry blobs without actually being easier to kill usually.
@theshamurai32
@theshamurai32 8 месяцев назад
@quincykunz3481 I agree, I just haven't gotten any Krieg boys to give it the huffy test. I could run him with my Cadians for that, they're just considerably less durable than Krieg and cap movement to 6", so idk how well that would work out in the open compared to the Attilans. Def something to experiment with though.

I've run every variant in 10th. I really hate the devil dog. Yeah, you are talking about the strength and AP and blast on the melta, but the thing still has BS4 with base d3 shots. At least I know the inferno Cannon will hit them. The inferno cannon is still the best variant, and you change the role with the hull weapon; flamerfor anti horde, multi melta for fighting elite infantry and the bolter for removing cover at long range for indirect.

There’s got to be some serious consideration for the heavy bolter to remove cover from a unit at 36” away… especially if you take any artillery in the army too It’s gotta be the classic inferno cannon for me too. Melta hitting on 4s (you’re not spending your rare tank orders on hellhounds) isn’t reliable enough and it only wounds MEQ on 2… TEQ is 3s, just like the inferno cannon
@sellis5716

I think one of each is a good loadout - the melta cannon isn't efficient into elite infantry or MSU and needing to roll to hit with all the -1 to hit out there really blunt efficiency

@SteelStorm33

stubbers would be awesome for them, removing cover through the stubber so you can compliment your main gun with the hull variant. stubbers also benefit from the shorter range nature of this vehicle, i would say free stubbers would rescue the hellhound and make kinda worth playing, maybe.

Sorry sir Mordian but I believe the administratum is going to issue you a whole regiment of L's with this take. Even with take aim (Which is rather sought after because leontus and tank commanders have better things to do) the melta dog is way too unreliable in hitting and wounding big targets, even against heavy infantry it gets outclassed by other vehicles like the Rogal and multiple Russ variants rather easily. In addition a tank with 18" of range and a blast weapon is just begging for some enemy mooks to give it a hug, lowering its efficiency even more if it decides to stay engaged or forcing it to fall back. Besides the auto-hitting weapons of the Hellhound allow it to be one of our biggest overwatch users, it may not kill whole units but it can kill a couple of wounds left on whatever you need or threaten enemy light objective grabbers/utility units to reveal themselves. I'd go inferno or chem depending on the local meta and then heavy flamer.
@cavemansam8400
@cavemansam8400 8 месяцев назад
RAW you can strip cover from a unit at 36” by hitting it with the heavy bolter. This is relevant as -1ap from multiple exterminator’s doesn’t stack and indirect fire grants a cover save to the target. Essentially this means that the Hellhound is in our maximum artillery damage combo. Full Combo: Exterminator -1ap , Fields of Fire strat -1ap, Scout Sentinel daring recon, Hellhound Ignores Cover.

I see hellhounds as an exclusive anti elite infantry model. all of those T5 3+save models, most guard datasheets struggle into that. Chem cannon best. The problem with melta is I never have a spare tank order for a hell hound.
@blackwolf671
@blackwolf671 8 месяцев назад
I think the Strength 9 really keeps the devil dog from being truly effective as a tank hunter, It has a place in infantry heavy lists otherwise lacking AP and it is good for punching into light vehicles/walkers, and its a solid threat against something like terminators or True heavy infantry. But I still prefer the banewolf for medium to light infantry, until you hit that 3w/2+ demographic, autohitting is worth and guarantied crit wounds on 2+ is just ideal for MEQs. devil isnt far behind and has that more versatile role, i can see the argument, and its a strong one. But I also like being able to overwatch and be assured I'm going to get the hits that I need, it great for area denial/screening which is half of what I end up using Chimera's for anyways. Plus Anti Infantry 2+ scares alot of players, so it makes it a nice distraction carnifex that soaks up fire that would have otherwise gone into actually valuable targets.
@cesarsotillo784
@cesarsotillo784 8 месяцев назад
I strongly disagree. The main purpose of the hellhound is to remove cover from a unit, With 2+d3 shots hitting on 4+ there is a very real chance you won't even tag your target. As for damage vs tanks you are wounding on 5+ most of the targets that matter and vs Heavy Infantry most have an invulnerable save. To me the best configuration for the hellhound is inferno cannon+hull heavy bolter, and the best place for the hellhound in the current meta is your shelf at home.
@Kingofsea7591
@Kingofsea7591 8 месяцев назад
Na ur wrong hellhound is amazing for striping cover and dealing with MEQ with the chem cannon. I run mine as Chem, bolter , HKM, Shot the bolter at a tank 3 shots, hitting on 4s 1 is almost always going to hit, Chem cannon at its ideal target, Missle if it hit and wound cool Then the target that got shot with the bolter now get no cover since cover is everywhere these days the ability to flat out remove it is massive
@theshamurai32
@theshamurai32 8 месяцев назад
@Kingofsea7591 My issue with the chem cannon is that low strength. S2 is going to be wounding standard Marines and above on 6's, so you can automatically dump ~83% of your shots as not wounding if you're facing Astartes or tougher. Even against other guardsmen, Eldar, etc. with T3 you'll be fishing for 5's and 6's. Unless there's something I'm missing, the chem cannon just seems too overspecialized to deal with chaff infantry, and Guard already has plenty of weapon systems to kill light infantry.

@@theshamurai32 the fact that it has anti infantry 2+ means that it will wound any infantry models on a 2+, so the strength only matters if you decide to target non infantry

@Sirhc223 Oh shit, that's what Anti-X does?? Man, my local meta really just been teaching me wrong shit. The guys at the shop said it's extra damage of the amount (e.g. I shoot a Dam2 weapon with Anti-infantry 2 at a guard squad, it will score 4 wounds instead of 2 if it wounds). Thank you for the clarification.

I really do like the new style you got going on, I’d like to consider these weapons to be Terminator killers. A single Devil Dog should be able to deal with a single unit of Terminators a turn. They can also turn off cover for an opponents unit and then whatever happens to be left and you really want to delete it you could use Fields of Fire or tank shock.

Hhhmmm it’s an intriguing idea My brain can’t get past D3 shots hitting on 4s though, Against vehicles hitting on 4s wound on 5s, with 2 shots average, its scoring 1 wound every 3 turns with its main turret. And I don’t think it’s worth giving it orders. But as an all round hellhound MG could be right! It will be decent against custodes and termies, and zooming up to characters, I think the anti tank option fits in as more of a nothing else to shoot at. A hell hound faced with only vehicle or terminator equivalent would do terribly in comparison

Maybe the best load out for a hellhound is to replace the hellhound with a chimera full of catachan for the same points. A chimera with flamers in the gundeck is roughly equal firepower and only slightly less durable than the hellhound, except now it has scoutmove AND when it dies you still have an infantry squad. Only significant value you lose is the cover-stripping.

I really dont think take aim is getting spared on a hellhound. You're averaging 2 shots, missing 1, then have a 1/3 chance to wound most threatening monsters and vehicles in the game. That's very long odds. Auto hitting in a ballistic skill 4+ army is the gem in the hellhound's crown. Very few units at T4 stack up to 20 man blobs to get big blast either, most stuff stacking to 20s is T3 which the inferno cannon wounds on 2s. I'd keep the hellhound in its own lane, maybe do the remove cover trick via the heavy bolter. But the real value is going to be unleashing torrent weapons in the enemy turn via overwatch, with your preferred flavor of flames or chems.
@SteelStorm33
@SteelStorm33 8 месяцев назад
i want to like the melta cannon, but it isnt that good versus vehicles. it might be more relyable against infantry and goodish for multiwound infantry but it isnt better versus vehicles than a single multimelta. sometimes its better than a single mm, sometimes worse, so having only two multimelta on a vehicle isnt worth it, i can have two multimelta on a leman russ in adition to its main gun. i go for the inferno gun, chem cannon has less shots and less range, so no gain there, with heavy bolter. i want the bolter for its range to have the ability to remove cover within 36". you can do the same for every cannon, having fun with the main gun and decover something else with the bolter, so the main purpose of the hellhound becomes another supportive buff with a bonus gun. therefore all guns are about equal, hellhounds arent good damage dealers, a double bolter chimera has double the range and mostly the same damage. any main gun flavour with bolter topping is my call for hellhound.

Highly disagree for one main reason the inferno cannon needs no support to do its job and the melta cannon needs an order to do anything. That’s a huge deal imo. There are just many many better targets for the small number of tank orders we get than the melta cannon
@xerty5502
@xerty5502 8 месяцев назад
Do not disagree with any of your points really you just missed 2. The first being tour suggestion on take aim being avaible to mitigate the 4+ to hit and unless you are building to make it happen that is probaly not true 1st off for tour very limited vehicle eligible orders the hellhoind in any weapons mix is not a good target so many better options yea usaly more pricey options but still better add in that a vehicle that is going to be pushing into the enemy at stupid close ranges could very easily find itself outside of the range of orders. 2nd point overwatch the inferno cannon is very good hearvwhile the meta cannon is near useless. My pointbof view if I am taking a hellhoind at all I am taking it for fast flank type stuff and I am burning down small msu units something the inferno cannon excels against if I want an all rounder that can fight tanks I am taking at least a lemonruss varrient if bot something bigger. So no matter how much more all round the melta may be I am simply not taking it at all that's not a good role for the hellhoind in the index. Though to be honest I am probaly not taking a hellhoind at all a chimera with flamer load out and a catchan squad is nearly as good at flaming things to death and I also get 10 oc 2 buddies inside to play objective games with much better option, for thr exact same cost. And if I want nasty take all comers short range killing I am going to pony up the extra 75 points for a lemonruss demolisher. Quite possibly with triple heavy flamer and get the best of both worlds. Though the hull and sponson guns could be different
