This is gonna sound like I work with you lol. My story is doing well. But, I needed to ask how to take it to another level. So I came to this comment and saw this. I will check it out. I listen to a few "mediumers" on youtube. I think you have the best content. There are some good ones but, I've used your advice the most. Whatever. You have a cute cat. Peace and blessings.
I joined your 5 day medium starter kit and to be honest, i was kind of lost when I started writing on medium. I cant express enough how much your email strategy helped me. I wish you grow more. Godspeed
Thanks for this Zulie! You just gave the right info. Don't give them the best at the current time, give them how you can do it yourself no matter what time it is.
I just found you on youtube. I wanted to thank you for your very frank and straightforward comments. I have gotten very excited about using medium. I'm going to start writing and see where it takes me! Thank you.
I've been writing on Medium for six months and didn't know most of what you say in this video! I will make sure I come back and check for new videos and don't miss anything. Thanks!
I have just started publishing on Medium. Submitting to a publication always sounded so daunting for me. Thanks for breaking down the process. It doesn't seem so scary now.
I love the end with your flaws! Brilliant! Allows to appreciate how much work it has been put in short video like this. Also great shift on your stance on publications, how do you explain this change? Splendid detailed explanation!
Hey Zulie! Thanks so much for this video, it is super useful! I needed the extra inspiration for accessing publications, as I feel hugely intimidated by them and feel quite lost about it. I'm off to apply this advice right away! ⭐
Great video - I love that you've made it 'timeless' in its application as Medium does seem to change a lot. Been finding a lot of your videos helpful as I take a deep dive trying to write more consistently on Medium. Really like your suggested outline for blog posts. Cheers!
I signed up for your Starter Kit! So far it is awesome, I am not BRAND NEW. I signed up for Medium back in Nov 2021 and wrote one story, this month I actually started writing. I have 4 stories and just submitted to my first publication! I have started looking at other publications as well. I have learned a lot from you so far and pretty much everything I know about Medium is from your articles or videos, so thank you! I was accepted into New Writers Welcome and it seems like a really good publication to get started with.
Excellent video Zulie. Love your content. I'm new to Medium and looking for ways to grow fast, and I discovered your content on Medium yesterday and started binging on it, because you've got a ton of stuff that's really helpful for anyone looking to kickstart themselves on Medium. Looking forward to consuming more.
Helpful advice thanks Zulie 🙂 Will pay more attention to engagement rate when searching for suitable publishers. I joined Medium 2.5 weeks ago. Self published 4 stories but I decided to remove them and re-submitted them to a couple of different publishers. Have asked if they can wait until I am in the Partner Program (yay re some of the new Medium rules!) before publishing them... if they do! 🤞 I likely will submit a story to Catness one day! 😺 I have three of my own plus am looking after my brothers cat atm! 😺🐱😸😻
Thanks Zulie. That was a very clear and informative video. I ASSUME we should only submit to one publication at a time ?? And wait for their response before (in case of a refusal) submitting to another... ? Thanks !
Nice video! Thank you for the information! Let's say that the publication wants you to fill out a form to be accepted and share a link to a draft you want them to publish. Will this draft be published or you have to go to the story and add it to the publication, once you're accepted?
Thanks for sharing Zulie. Great info. I've just been concentrating on putting stories onto my new Professor Leo Medium account and have 38 views on 10 stories to date. Probably mostly my own self indulgent views )-: But now I will start to look into promoting the stories as you suggest in this vid. Hope it works better than my efforts on RU-vid to date. Feeling like "MR INVISIBLE" on all things to do with the internet! )-:
When you get more experience writing on Medium, how do you get in the bigger Publications that are not open for submissions? or... How do the big Publications get new writers? :-)
I agree! I used to do most of my writing on the app. And if I had spare time and I was sitting at the doctors office, for example, I could work on my writing as I waited for my appointment. I hate this change!
You can still write your content for Medium, Substack, or your domain, etc. in iOS, you just can't publish. Most writing apps and even I think Medium and/or Substack say it is better to compose outside of a respective platform. Plus, at least for me, I often apply Hemingway, Grammarly, and/or ProWritingAid to ensure I'm writing the best content possible; heading off typos, long-assed sentences, and avoiding passive voice. I understand about "firing the editor" when one writes, so then maybe just use Notes for composing, then pulling them up on the desktop for editing, proofing, and SEO inclusion. I realize I'm an OG in the middle of a Millennial world, but to get my mind clear about what I'm writing, sometimes I start with a typewriter. I get what I want to say down with no temptations for online distractions, and then type it once more for further clarification, documentation, and cutting. I understand your frustration with losing a way of doing things. This is one of those "tech advancement" things we're all struggling with. And it could be one of those engineers fixing what isn't broken things without input from the community being served. Cos if you don't know by now, engineers are great at adding functionality that no one wants just to satisfy themselves they can bring about a certain functionality. Hang in there. Perhaps enough writers will raise enough hell about this that Medium adds it back. n the meantime, you must simply modify your system because none of us can really quit writing if we're genuine writers, right? All the best, and thanks, again, Z, for all you do to make the world a better place.
Hey Zulie❤ Medium has some stories that are member only. And I’m not signed up for the member only membership so I just wanted to ask if that plays any role when I apply to publications 😊
Hi Zulie.. great video.. I am new to Medium and have 7 drafts ready. I have submitted one post to a pub. However, I still don't understand the nuance of difference between self publishing and posting on my profile. My stories are on different topics. I dont see a way to tie them all under a single themed publication. Moreover, I dont get the difference.. how is my pub different from me.... any advice for a new writer writing on various topics?
Hi! Generally, I always advise new writers to use engaged publications to grow their audience. Why? Because you can tap into their existing readership and show them what you bring to the table. Using your own publication to publish your articles is better than publishing on your own profile when: a) you can use your publication to group articles or b) you want other writers to contribute to your publication. Another benefit (I think!) is that a person who subscribed to both your profile and your publication, they'll be more likely to see your article. That said, if running your own publication is too much hassle, there's nothing wrong with publishing on your own profile. Hope that makes sense and helps!
Very insightful video. My question is how to get accepted by big publications like The Writing Cooperative, StartUp etc. given that I can produce quality content and I have written over 50 articles now? Do I need to have contacts in big pubs to get my articles accepted? Thanks, Aman
@@ZulieWrites thank you so much 😊. Your tips were really helpful. What if you find a publication yet there’s no publish button to submit your writing? How can you contact the publication?
hey Zulie, I'm new to your channel and have only been able to get to the 1.39 mark of this video before I paused it to write you! The music is absolutely sensational and although I am totally going to unpause the video because I definitely want to hear what you you're saying, I also very much NEED to listen to this full track afterwards. Please could you be so kind as to tell me the name of the backing track that you used? I would greatly appreciate that. THANK YOU!
Thank you Zulie. This was helpful for sure. Quick question, I've been accepted to submit to a publication, which is cool. So here's my question. I wrote several articles and have published them on my own page. How do I convert them to a draft so I can submit to the publication? Thanks so much for your help. Joe
Unfortunately you can't! Once something has been published, it's just out there. You can copy it, delete it, and paste it into a new draft, but if you do that, I encourage you to make sure you significantly rewrite portions since Medium doesn't like duplicate content.
Hey Zulie, Great Content as always. I have one doubt regarding medium, Is it necessary to become a medium referred member myself to earn from referred earnings?
So valuable information as usual...thank you Zulie! I have a question, if I'm bi-lingual (Spanish-English) does it really matter (or affect) the algorithm (or my potential audience) if I write in both languages do you know?
Kind of. At this point, Medium only distributes stories that are written in English. Unfortunately, I have no clue what happens when you publish in two different languages and if your Spanish stories affect your English stories negatively. Honestly, I wouldn't really recommend it because it can confuse your audience and IF there's an effect on the algorithm, it's a negative one. But all this is only speculation so feel free to experiment and see what works for you!
This was helpful. I submitted my first article to medium, having no idea what I'm doing. :) Question: I have a medium profile but I'm not subscribed so I can't read articles. Should submitters of articles be able to read others' as a general rule?
Yay, go you! I encourage all writers on Medium to get a membership. It'll help you become a better writer, read a ton of great articles, and support writers like you!
Nope, you can only submit to one publication. If you want to change publications, you first have to remove it from the publication and resubmit it to a different one.
Hi Zulie, thanks for all of your amazing content - I've learned so much! I have a website and was looking to start publishing my content on Medium too to benefit from the larger audience, but I'm struggling to come up with a good strategy. I already have about 10 posts on my blog, and recently began importing them to Medium... until I watched your video about the dreaded *curation jail*. I panicked and deleted (and re-made) my account to wipe the slate clean, and now I'm not sure how to approach things. I wondered whether importing articles decreases your chances of getting curated? And I'd really like to transfer my blog's articles to Medium, but a lot of them were published a while ago - is there a good way to do this, or should I not bother and just import to Medium going forwards? Alternatively, I think there’s a WordPress plugin that can display Medium articles on a website - that could be an option? Sorry for the essay ;D Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks again for everything you do!
Hi Thea, As far as I know, importing articles doesn't decrease your chance of curation. But I do think the algorithm prefers fresh material. So try copy/pasting your articles in the Medium editor and then add a canonical link to your blog. (More infos here: help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/360033930293-Set-a-canonical-link) I hope that helps!
Hi tnx for the info . I want to do affiliate marketing with medium , my question is how many affiliate link I can put for example in every ten article to not get banned ¿ I ask this because I heard medium will ban too much affiliate links attached to an article ¿
Hi Zulie! I have started writing a couple of stories. However, I write in German. Do you think it makes sense to publish them on medium? It's difficult to find German publications. Love your Chanel ❤️
Hi Johanna! So glad to hear you're enjoying my channel! If you want to get lots of views and earn some money, the short answer is No, unfortunately. Medium only curates English content and the vast majority of users is English-speaking. However, Medium has a high domain authority. So if your goal is to build your own blog/website in German and piggyback off Medium with SEO, that might work!
I went on medium, and it's poorly organized. Most of the publications I clicked on had no articles at all and there was no way to organize by date. Very weird site. Who the heck writes about cats?
Sorry to hear you made that experience! Medium can definitely be a tough nut to crack, and their site organization isn't always the best. But the great thing is that you can start writing in less than 5 minutes and get paid for writing about what you love!
You always retain the rights for your Medium articles, so it's totally possible to republish them somewhere else (if you meet the requirements of your target publication).
Hey Zulie! I’m attempting to transition to career coaching as a side hustle. I’m using medium to build a potential readership that will turn into hopeful clients. What’s your suggestion on marketing my coaching articles on medium to find readers looking for career related articles?
Start writing consistently in your niche to build credibility. To get started, look for publications that represent work and careers. At the end of your articles, insert a CTA to your website, LinkedIn, or whatever you want to sell. I hope that helps and best of luck!
What is the prerequisite for The Startup publication? I submitted, but they didn't even bother to leave a note. However, the Entrepreneur Handbook stated that the article was excellent but unfit for publication. Can you recommend any publications about startups?
Make sure you check out the current submission guidelines of The Startup and follow everything in there. If you did follow everything, don't get discouraged by one rejection -- try again! For finding more publications, I'd recommend browsing the tag "Startup" like I showed in the video.
hello ma'am , when I see "new writers welcome" hear I see a 1 month subscription, so ma'am suggest me a publication that I can add to my publication list for free. And I am writing a blog to about sex, psychology, health, self ... So ma'am please help me suggest free publication for my blogs ..
Publications are super important to because they have their own (much bigger) following. So when you publish in publications, you get access to that audience. All of my most successful articles were published in publications, so they're definitely a fast lane to gaining traction. Here's how to find the best publications: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WDbJ8cxZ41Q.html
Question.. If you’re waiting to get on the submission list, meaning you’ve contacted them, but the pull down menu says no publications available, yet… should you publish the article while you wait to be able to submit or hold the article as a draft until you can?
If the pull-down menu says no publications available that means they haven't added you as a writer yet. If you want to publish your story with the publication you applied for, you have to wait until you're added as a writer, then submit the story via the drop-down menu, and finally wait until they've published it. Hope that makes sense and helps!
At the moment, there is no way to be paid directly by Medium or Stripe if your country is not allowed. However, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from writing on Medium right now. You can totally sign up, start writing, build a portfolio and start getting followers now. You won't be paid by Medium directly YET, and I know that sucks and is unfair and I really hope Medium/Stripe change their policy soon, but a) there are other ways to earn money, like driving people to your own blog, using affiliate links and so on and b) eventually, I hope, Medium/Stripe will monetize for additional countries. If that's the case, you'll be established on Medium when that happens. Hope that makes sense and sorry I can't help more. I am always trying to find a workaround as it affects a lot of people, and I really believe that everyone deserves to be compensated for their writing, but as of yet, I have not found any good workarounds. However, there are some other strategies to make money on Medium without the partner program. I lay them out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EN9VYEnly_I.html
