The BEST Method to Propagate String of Hearts

Christine received her very first string of hearts cutting through an online plant trade recently. It had very few leaves so she knew she wanted to propagate it however at the time she wasn't sure what the best method would be. Many people propagate them in water however this has its risks and you're not rooting them at every node. After some research she decided to use this method to propagate her cutting, and she already has multiple new healthy strands of her string of hearts (ceropegia woodii).

I’m glad people do videos on this topic, thanks. I made the mistake of putting my chain of hearts that is as long as my leg (but a bit longer than that) outside for the summer to give it a glow up in perfect conditions. It worked perfectly and even bloomed profusely, and then this morning I walked out to find it completely shredded by friggin’ SQUIRRELS who dug up the hanging pot to hide food for winter. Heartbreak ensued. One lone strand remained rooted in dirt. The whole rest of the plant had the many many long strands broken off up at the base. Lesson learned the hard way, I guess. Wild animals be WILD, and they will mess your stuff up!

Had something similar happen to the first Sempervivums I tried to propagate. Since I had to do a lot of repotting and clearing out parasites I put the newly rehomed plants and their pups outside to wait out any possible remaining pests. What I didn't know however is that mice enjoy munching on these leaves. So one morning I walked up all excited to my plants only to find a murder scene! The meanest thing was that they took out some of my favorites too with gorgeous red tips😭

I don't know if you'll ever see this, however I want to let you know your method saved my SoH. I bought a SoH a couple years ago and it grew leggy but nicely. I went through a depression this fall and winter and neglected so many of my plants. My SoH was dying off and I realized that about the time I got out of my funk. In the beginning of the spring I remembered your video and took what remained of my plant, got an old to go container, and did what you said in this video. I left the bagged plant on a semi sunny window sill and let it be for a few weeks. Not too long later I checked and not only had they rooted but the rooted plants had grown new leaves! I quickly snipped up a bunch of the segments and planted half of them in a pot with a sphagnum/soil mix, and left half in. I even put root enzyme on some of the new sections which have also grown new roots. I now have two pots of beautiful, baby SoH with more coming. Hopefully I'll have enough to one day gift to friends and family.

I had ordered strings of pearls, hearts, tears, fish hooks, bananas, dolphins and ruby necklace from one lady on Facebook. When I received them, her suggestion was to take each strand and cut it down into 3 in pieces. Minus the hearts. She told me to do these a different way and I listened and I'm so glad I did. With those she told me to cut them as you did, you cut them in half but she told me to cut them up into their own individual butterfly aka node. So basically she sent me a string that had five groups of two hearts. (Each growth point generally has two hearts) then she told me to put them on the soil or coco peat or whatever you choose to use, with the nodes just under the soil but not the actual leaf as you said. Within a month, those cutting points and courage to new growth just as yours did when you finally cut them. And with all the other strings that I propagated that she told me to cut down into 3 to 4 in pieces, they have grown like he would not believe. I wish I could show a picture. So basically if somebody tells you to cut your hearts or cut any of your strings down into pieces to propagate, listen. Lol it definitely helps. The smaller the pieces, the more growth you will get. One mistake that I made with my strings of everything besides hearts was not laying them on top of the soil But instead just sticking each end down into the soil. I would probably have more than I have now but I'm totally okay with that because I have so many of my strings right now I cannot even tell you. 😊

Good video. I have found that by misting the plant 2-3 times a week ensuring that the vines and nodes are moist causes the plant to start new growth. This also makes the plant fuller. Also by spaying the leaves and vines inside the hanging pot, new vines/ leaves will also develop. After a while you will see the nodes getting very large. This is when I start taking cutting and either starting a new plant or sticking them into the top of the plant to make it bushier. Although mine has trailers that are 4-5 feet long and growing trimming it back to 2-3 feet causes it to grow inside and outside of the hanging pot making it fuller. It needs light not sunlight although the variegated does better in bright to middle sunlight which causes the pink to be darker. I haven’t tried water propagating but have found that Moss and soil work very well.

Thank you for the information! I've got one small string I'm working with and have had it sitting on water for about four weeks. Oddly, the plant has pushed out an entire new set of leaves and stem this week yet there's absolutely no hint of any roots still. Have swapped the cutting to this method as it sounds better and I'm not just relying on the one node in the water to push the roots out. Will see how it goes

I received some cuttings and am using this method to propagate. I used a blueberry container. It’s been a week and a half and I can see one visible root but I have a few new sprouts that are growing fast. I just want to be sure I’m doing it right going forward. I should wait until I get more roots before cutting, correct? The new growth is already hitting the lid of the container so I will leave the lid slightly open and check the moisture a few times a day. Up to this point I have used peat moss and a couple of Bobby pins where the plant wouldn’t lay flat. I have it about two feet away from an east facing window that has a tree in front so the light isn’t direct. I usually give it three sprays of water with the bottle about 8 inches away from the plant and keep the container in a gallon ziplock that I close halfway. I open the container every morning to check on them. I live in Las Vegas, so it’s not a very humid environment. (I’m including the details in case it helps anyone out.) Thank you for the info!
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 3 года назад
Thank you for sharing! So happy this is working for you! as to when to cut the cutting, I would say you can wait a little bit for a slightly stronger plant so in case anything happens, it can withstand it.

perlite should work holds less moisture so you may need to mist it more depending on your setup

either is good. each just has different MOISTURE retention. if you have cactus mix you can use that

I'm propagating my string of everything ( hearts, fig, pearls and turtle) in water and they doing great. I use water and soil propagation both just in case one medium gives up.

Last month I bought a plant and on the soil I have found a single leaf of String-of-hearts. Seeing that it looked fresh, I decided to see if that was because it rooted. It has been living for a while and even formed a potato-like tuber at its base. I will wait as it's just a matter of time until it sends a new shoot. Have you tried leaf propagation? What was your experience with this method?
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 4 года назад
I have not tried just propagating a leave, but thats really cool that it worked out for you. as long as you keep watering it when it dries, i am sure you will get a new baby plant! so cute! Thank you for sharing!

Can I use cactus soil if I don't have the moss?
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 5 лет назад
Yeah that should be fine, you just want it to be a light and airy medium. The moss would stay more wet though, so you may want to put it in a bag or something to increase the humidity. Good luck

Hi there! Does it matter if the SOH strand is from the younger part of the string? Is it best to work with a more mature part?
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 4 года назад
I haven't experiment with that, the only thing I can think of is when using smaller leaves they hold less moisture so may dry out? otherwise it should be fine

Why my string of heart plant leavs are falling off...the soil is not overwaterd or soggy and also it's in a bright place... please help me
@BotanicalWoman

that usually happens when its not getting enough water. do you water it until water comes out of the drainage holes? Give it a good watering and let it dry out and repeat! =) Good luck!

Could I do this while it’s still attached to the plant? Mines really little and I don’t want to kill it x
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 3 года назад
yes totally, just lay the nodes on top of the soil and if you really want to help it root, i would increase the humidity. since you have a small plant, i would put the whole thing in a zip lock bag for a few weeks so it can develop new roots! good luck
