I don’t have a lot of space for plants, so I’m just as happy when they don’t grow like weeds. Soon it will be warm enough to move most of them outside into the fresh air and sunshine. I’m lucky enough to have a lovely covered front porch that faces east. Lots of bright morning sun and diffuse light in the afternoon. Thrilled to see my moth orchid blooming today.

Thank you. I have a disability and I only have use of my right hand. I discovered Brazilian wood plants recently and thought it would perfect for me. I had it for a month. It sits directly across the room from my bedroom windows. The right side of my plant has been growing beautifully but the left side is barely visible. I think I know what wrong. My left window shade only went half way up and I think I have been overwatering it too. Yesterday I took down both window shades and both sides of my plant is equal amounts of sun exposure and I am going more careful with watering.

Thank you very much for the quality video you've shared about taking a great care of our house plants. One thing I would like to add (even though I don't see myself as a big specialist) is the fact that plants have the ability to "magnetically sense" the season changes so sometimes no matter how hard we try, the just won't give up until their "senses" come to the conclusion that it is the right time to take to the next stage. I for example have a gorgeous FIG TREE that grew up in 1 summer from a small rescued cutting to a 1.5 meters diameter bush with many happy fruits on it. Every other season I was trying and trying to feed the plant, water, give it the best warmth/light etc. but this year while being busy with work, I decided to follow up the trees natural cycles so I left it in my garage where it is almost 95% dark, about +8/10C warm and let it sit there almost with no water in a big pot which I watered on every other month. So to my surprise, while staying in such a complete darkness and almost thirsty close to dying, I saw first leaves coming out (and they were vibrantly green, not pale white as usually happens under low light) and then some new stem growth and then more leaves. So I was buffed as to how come when I do my best care the plants are growing but once I stop they still do and like they don't care under what circumstances I put them in. Then it came to my mind that this winter was a warmer in our area in Canada, so the plant must have had it's dormant stage passed over and sensed the time to regrow all from scratch so started somehow generating its green matter (chlorophyte) even without any help from my side. Well, of course, when I saw the tree starting to branch and grow new leaves I knew it is time for me to start helping so that I end up with the gorgeous tree I left last autumn even before the start of the summer which should give even more time to grow better, tastier, bigger and nicer figs again. So believe it or not, read very carefully about the plants you select, know what their needs are, their issues, their happy moments and consider them as kids - we want them to grow fast and see the fruits of our labor, but the nature just take its natural time and moves so all we need is some patience and more care to earn back the same from our loved plants!

I’ve been cheering on a calathea (white fusion, so the little lady’s very picky according to just about everywhere) I rescued from a chain plant-store. She was all shrivelled and dry which meant I had to cut off her leading stems… I’m still not sure if she’s going to bounce back from it as it has been over a month and her two remaining leaves are looking worse for wear than before and there’s no sign of new shoots from the roots. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that keeping her consistently humid until she is better (and then slowly lowering the humidity! Mr Sheffield’s taught me better than to just pull her out into my dry house!) is going to bring her back to life! Maybe I’ll call her Frankie if she survives; as homage to Frankenstein’s monster with all her dramatics and being half dead at the moment. :)

Specifically for the rubber tree, I saw a video recently (I think it was PlantBoy Ng in Nigeria) that was talking about how to trigger them to grow. In the wild they grow the most in the spring because of the rainfall. So he says that if they are dormant, just give them a good shower allowing lots of water to hit the leaves. They should start growing again. Maybe you can do an experiment for us on this!

My Monstera completely paused for all of January and February, after a sadly necessary dissinfecting, separation and repotting session, in December. I was so worried. Lost a few leaves to the yellowing. Wilting. Completely ceased growing. I was so worried, feared it was all my fault, but then I did consider that maybe part of it was just the season. Re-introduced Sansi grow lights to it, and magic. The 2 new leaves that stayed closed for 2 months finally opened, its roots started to show through the water hole (I bottom water, so good sign), 2 new leaves, all within a week. Light makes a world of difference.

I would add just one more thing: If you want to be a plant kung fu master, you must learn patience, grasshopper! I was gifted a few unwanted children from a broken home, among them an anonymous hoya of some kind, a rather sad orchid (I'm assuming a phalaenopsis but so far, it's keeping its secret) and two sansevierias. I did all the 'right things' and then sat back to watch my efforts rewarded. And waited...and waited...Well, you get it. After about 8 months of my clucking over them like some frustrated hen, suddenly they all started growing! The mystery hoya threw out a truly impressive long shoot (still no flowers...I'm waiting, Mr. Hoya!), the orchid has lots of new leaf growth and one hopes my tender loving care will eventually be rewarded. I'm still a bit disappointed with both the Sansies' color, but they are growing. I've got a parlor palm and an Aspidistra that have been sulking for the better part of a year now, but hope springs eternal. I would say, as a general rule, most of my healthier acquisitions snap to attention a bit sooner than the abused children I was given, but my Dieffenbachia wanted to die for the first six weeks; my M. adansonii has still got the sulks after four months, but it's winter so I'm waiting...impatiently. Some plants (looking at you, Pothos!) seem to just dig right in and get to work. Others, like my Angel Wing Begonia went mad and got way too leggy, so it's had major surgery and I've got a half dozen clones of her. Patience, half-strength fertilizer with each watering and get a bloody moisture meter! Grow lights are a huge help and the LED type are not expensive to run eight or twelve hours a day. Don't just assume because your plant's in a window it's getting enough light. Each situation is different. I actually get more light in the winter, when the big maple is bare, but of course it's not as long in duration, and on a dark, stormy day it's pretty dim in my flat/cave. Grow lights keep the darker areas adequately lit. Don't go mad with lights, but sit and watch how the light moves through your room(s) at various times/seasons and you'll see a lot of your plants are only getting a few hours of really adequate light. (Sorry to go on so long about light, but I used to design and sell lighting, so...). Every time Mr. Sheffield tosses a plant into the bin I cringe, mostly because I see him pitching a plant I'd give more time, but yeah, when it's dead, it's dead. We have a brief ceremony and off to the landfill. RIP Gardeners and house gardeners should accept that death is a part of life, you know, The Lion King..."...the circle, the circle of liiifffe." Over and out. Cheers!

Bonsai trees don't generally do well indoors, unless it's a tropical tree. They need to be outside but in a very filtered sun location and those small pots dry out very quickly, especially on a hot day, when you might have to water them twice a day to keep them going. That pot dries out and your tree is dead.

If you're willing to do business with the Evil Empire (that is to say, Amazon) there are lots of LED grow lights in various configurations at reasonable prices. You can buy one or two and then add more as needed. They really do help. "Low light" plants aren't really all that 'low light'.
