Hey Sean his best work counts on movies have you also seen the island wich actually had a real plot and charachters to root for also haven’t critics and other film viewers praised some of his work before and also stating how he understands restraint and how to cohesively stage action so you can tell what’s going on and making neat scenes.

Hot take: Michael Bay is actually good at directing. I think it's pretty impressive how well he integrates real actors with CGI characters (in the better Transformer movies that is). His problem are his plots, he shouldn't be let anywhere near the writer's room.

This isn’t a hot take shouldn’t there be enough who think Michael bay directs well at least when he gets the right material and script. Not all his films have weak story and plot didn’t the island, transformers, 13 hours and the rock have coherent plotting.

Nah his work on Transformers progressively got worse. (With exception of Dark of the Moon) By The Last Knight it seemed like he completely gave up. The camera work was wierd. The action was unintelligible. And the constantly changing aspect ratio literally gave me a headache.

Shyamalan deserves to be here, and also does not deserve to be here. Kind of depends on the era. Phase 0: Praying With Anger Wide Awake Pre-career, basically. Like most people I have not seen these. Phase 1 (The Peak): The Sixth Sense Unbreakable Signs Peak era, obviously. The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are both masterpieces. Signs is mostly beloved until it gets to the ending, which is not nearly as egregious as many claim. Phase 2 (Decline): The Village Lady in the Water The Happening This era saw a decline occur over the course of three films. The Visit was polarizing (I like it, but many hate it), Lady in the Water just made people ask "WTF?", and The Happening was shockingly bad for someone who previously felt like a visionary auteur, even when he missed the mark. Phase 3 (Death): The Last Airbender After Earth I never saw these because they aren't really Shyamalan films. None of his identity is in them. Blockbuster films were clearly not for him. After Earth, especially, was known as a job he took because he was desperate at that time. At this point, Shyamalan went from being declared the next Spielberg, to being a laughingstock. It seemed like his career was dead. Phase 4 (Rebirth): The Visit Split This is the era where Shyamalan clawed his way back into the Hollywood mainstream, after his career basically died. He got his next movie, The Visit, out by going ultra-low budget and financing it himself. He saw himself stripping down to the key ingredients of a good Shyamalan film, and this back to basics approach made people cautiously optimistic. This was followed by Split, a huge hit that most people loved, and was seen as something mostly on par with his peak era work. Shyamalan was back! Phase 5 (Respect): Glass Old A Knock at the Cabin I labeled this era as respect, because it seems Shyamalan has accepted his place in Hollywood, as the guy keeping unique, mid-budget films alive in theaters, and most people seem to respect him for it, whether his films hit or miss. Indeed, the films of this era are mostly neither revered nor despised (Glass and Old had a mixed reception, and A Knock at the Cabin had a mostly positive reception). Trap has the best buzz around it that we have seen since Split, so we will have to see where it falls.

Michael Bay is not an underrated director. He was one of the biggest director of the 2000s. The problem with Bay is that he progressively got worse. It's like he just stopped caring. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I almost feel like M. Night Shyamalan tends to get over-hated sometimes. He seems to be more polarizing than anything. To some, he’s a talented director who takes huge risks and hits major home runs when he succeeds, yet can also miss spectacularly. Yet to others, he’s a talentless hack who got lucky to have the success he did early on, and only occasionally makes otherwise decent stuff. That latter camp especially seems focused on his flop period in the late ‘00’s and early 2010’s, with movies like The Happening, Last Airbender, and After Earth (which seemed to be more of a Smith family thing, and he was more a director for hire on). For me, I’m at least always interested to see what he’ll do next. I’m happy when his films turn out well, and kinda bummed when they don’t. I wish him the best, in any case.

@geometrydashiuppiter6910 25 дней назад
I feel like it's somewhere in between those two. He is definitely talented, you don't just get lucky when you can make movies like The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable. But it is true that most of the time he misses rather than hits, so...
@crazydud3380
@crazydud3380 25 дней назад
Dude always swings for the fences, for sure. He never just does a movie for a paycheck, except for during his directionless "blockbuster" phase, where he lost his Identity, and which his fans try to forget ever happened. Outside of that era, he has always been an excellent visual director, and usually gets great performances from his actors, too. His writing is where he is wildly inconsistent, and he often struggles with endings especially. I will note that he was wrongfully stereotyped as a "twist ending" director. Let's look at his filmography, and their endings: Wide Awake - normal Sixth Sense - twist Unbreakable - twist Signs - reveal (it is a big reveal ending, but wrongfully labeled as a twist) Village - multiple twists (this movie really did him no favors in avoiding the stereotype) Lady in the Water - WTF (weird ass ending, but not a twist in any way) Happening - no ending (the movie just kind of stops) Last Airbender - normal After Earth - normal Visit - normal (there is a major twist, but it occurs before the climax, not at the ending) Split - normal (however, the epilogue is a big reveal/twist) Glass - multiple reveals & twists Old - reveal (some may see it as a twist, but we know early on they are being watched, making the ending a big reveal, not a twist) A Knock at the Cabin - normal (the whole movie asks a question leading to an eventual answer, so definitely not a twist) 14 Movies Total Twist Endings: 4 Reveal Endings: 2 Weird Endings: 1 No Ending: 1 Normal Endings: 6 Out of 14 films, only 4 of them are twist Endings (5 if you count the epilogue to Split), with one movie (The Visit) that includes a big twist, but not as part of the ending.

Same. He directed some of my favorite films (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and I even like the Village), but also one of the worst films I've ever seen which, as an adaptation, is offensive (The Last Airbender). By the time I got around to watching The Happening, which I expected to be near unwatchable, I thought it was surprisingly entertaining--I think he meant for it to be absurdist, but that somehow that got lost in its reception. Same with his more recent films, though some work better than others. I do still follow his work, even when it's mediocre.

Night Shyamalan - Unbreakable-An incredibly powerful and profound exploration of finding your potential with fantastic which makes for one of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of All Time Lily & Lana Wachowski - The Matrix-Watching this movie in the theaters several weeks ago, I still love this movie for its blending of hero’s journey mythology, fantastic world building, Anime aesthetics, and great Paul W.S. Anderson - Event Horizon- This isn’t a very high bar, but still, I find this to be an enjoyable space horror thriller type film that has well done effects, actors I like seeing on screen, and a Hellraiser in space type aesthetic all throughout JJ Abrams - Star Trek 2009-Even though I’m a more casual Star Trek fan, I absolutely think this movie holds up pretty well fifteen years later because it’s an origin story for Kirk, which I think works as a solid story to tell Zack Snyder - Zack Snyder’s Justice League-An amazing comic book film that has great character arcs, solid Snyder action, complex but incredibly satisfying storytelling, a massive scale, and fantastic world building, all making for a superhero epic that’s absolutely deserving of the Justice League title

JJ Abrams: I hate him with a passion, but I enjoyed Star Trek 2009 and that was the last thing in the Star Trek franchise that I thought was really good. Michael Bay: he directed The Rock, and that movie is awesome. His career is great because of that alone. Roland Emmerich: The Patriot is a great movie and that would be my pick. His Midway remake was actually pretty good. I used to love Independence Day as a kid but that has aged like milk. M Night: I've to go with Unbreakable but he has a few great movies like Sean said. The Wachowskis brothers: Of course, The Matrix, it should've been one and done but that first movie took over pop culture. I will say they're two hit wonders because Bound was a great little crime drama. Paul W.S. Anderson: Event Horizon is a well-done science fiction horror. Zack Snyder: I like several of his movies, but I think his Dawn of the Dead remake was really strong. His blockbuster movies can be good at times but they're so loud and CGI heavy. Mostly agree with your choices, but some subtle differences: Michael Bay: I agree with The Rock, but have a soft spot for Armageddon and the first Transformers. Roland Emmerich: Agree with Independence Day, but soft spots for Stargate and the Patriot. M Night: Sixth Sense is his best, but Unbreakable and Signs (until the ending) are also great. Paul WS Anderson: Event Horizon. No contest. That movie messed me up. Wachowskis: Can't go past the Matrix, but I think Bound is also brilliant. JJ Abrams: Either Star Trek or Force Awakens, although Super 8 is worth watching as a 'Stranger things before Stranger things'. Zach Snyder: Watchmen (the extended cut - minus Black Freighter parts).

Michael Bay: The Island, an incredibly underrated film in general and is such a fantastic film regardless of who directed it. Love The Rock and the first two Bad Boys as well. Roland Emmerich: Stargate is my favorite(Kurt Russell is one of my top 5 all time actors) and is a rollicking good time. M. Night: Completely agree, Sean i LOVE Unbreakable. One of my all time favorite films. Understated and restrained but very beautiful and impactful too. The Wachowski brothers: The Matrix is the only real choice, but i am gonna be honest, i really enjoyed Speed Racer too for a good time. Paul W.S. Anderson: Definitely Mortal Kombat. Such a fun time with a soundtrack that absolutely slaps! J.J. Abrams: Man, this guy fell so hard from grace. Alias and Lost are two of my all time favorite shows that i still love watching today. I actually liked both of his two Star Trek movies and The Force Awakens(even though it started things off horribly from a SW lore perspective, it is still a hoot to watch). But Mission Impossible 3 is my pick, easily! Still one of the best MI films today and matches up with the newer entries handily, imo. I really enjoyed Super 8 a lot too. Zach Snyder: The only choice is Dawn of the Dead. A truly good, enjoyable film and i am not even much of a zombie junkie. That was before all of his movies became washed out, brown, slo mo messes. I really did enjoy 300 and Watchmen too.

Personally his Star Trek films were what introduced me to Star Trek and I can get why hard core Trekies may not be into it, though the most recent thing Abrams was a part of was he was going to be a producer for Batman the caped crusader (before the show got cancelled by David Zaslav though I’ve heard rumors it may have been picked up by something else) anyway personally I would’ve switch him for Uwe Bowell I’m not gonna act like Rise of Skywalker is a masterpiece but if I turn my brain off I can have fun with it. Most of Uwe Bowel’s filmography however makes it look like Citizen Kane in comparison.
