It's hard to believe that another year of pursuing British Steam has rolled by, but this year has been so packed with action that it's been hard to keep track! 2023 has seen so many events take place, and it's certainly been one of my personal favourites.
The year began with it marking 100 years since the formation of 'The Big Four' railway companies, LNER, LMS, GWR & SR, and many heritage railway even and railtours alike took place to mark this milestone, with plenty of examples of locomotives from said companies still operating today. As such, it was also the year that 60103 Flying Scotsman celebrated her centenary, making plenty of visits to heritage railways and operating mainline railtours to mark the occasion.
It's also safe to say that the south of England has been spoilt with locomotive variety over the year, with almost all of the mainline steam locomotives based up north, either from the West Coast Railways Carnforth pool or The Locomotive Services Ltd fleet in Crewe, paying a visit down here. As such, this compilation is very close to featuring every steam locomotive that operated on the mainline this year, without having to travel far from home. However, the need for these locomotives to come down here sadly shows that some common visitors to the south are being sorely missed, either due to unexpected maintenance, overrunning overhauls, or the usual caveats of steam operation.
But none the less, here is nearly an hour of uninterrupted footage, compiling of over 60 scenes of action from the mainline and heritage railways of British Steam at it's best. There was a lot of personal favourite shots and many highlights from the year to choose from, so I hope that this compilation features something of interest to you all.
