Click here for my Dream Theater playlist featuring ALL parts to this song! • Dream Theater
Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci has been known for his long, melodic and extremely virtuosic solos for more than two and a half decades now. One of his finest moments came on Dream Theater's 2009 album Black Clouds & Silver Linings with his outro solo to "The Best of Times".
In this The Best of Times guitar lesson I am gonna to show you how to play this epic and beautifully melodic solo note-for-note.
For those of you unfamiliar with this track and this outro solo, go ahead and find it on RU-vid or something and fast forward to about the 10 minute mark. That is when this incredible guitar solo begins and it lasts well over 3 minutes until the song fades out.
This solo has a bit of everything in it. Beautiful melodic lines that work perfectly over the haunting chord progression, blisteringly fast alternate picking and sweep picking sections, and many large bends that can seriously send your calluses running home to mama! :)
In order to properly tackle this entire solo, I have decided to break it up into 3 video lessons. That is pretty much what is required to teach something that is so expansive in both time and technique.
I will start each video lesson performing the part of the solo that I will be teaching in that particular video lesson. After that I will then break each phrase down for you note-for-note.
A good part of the solo is dedicated to slow and highly emotional guitar melodies. Don't automatically think that these sections are gonna be easy just because the aren't being played at a 1000 notes per second.
To really make those notes sing you need to make sure that not only are all the bends in tune, but you will also what to add a liberal amount of vibrato to those notes. Try to focus on a smooth and even vibrato and not some erratic thing that doesn't sound very musical.
For the really advanced licks in this solo, you will find that each one of them can make an excellent technique exercise. If there is one thing about John Petrucci's solo playing it is that not only is he very precise, but his licks are usually very pattern oriented and can be easily broken down into a nice technique exercise. He isn't one of those players who just lets it fly with a random sequence of notes that is hard to recreate. Instead, his playing is usually very focused with definitive patterns to follow during the fast sections.
As with anything this advanced, I usually go through the notes in the lesson a little bit quicker than usual. That is because not only do we have a lot of notes to get through, but in addition, if your ability level on the guitar is to the level that you can even consider learning such a monster guitar solo, you probably just need to see me play each phrase slowly instead of getting overly detailed about each note. I will call out each note, but it will go by faster than usual.
Pay close attention during all of these lessons to when I point out a specific pattern that John Petrucci is playing and then sequencing across the fretboard. That pattern goes a long way in helping understand how he is creating those extended fast licks.
So good luck with this one, it truly is an epic solo!
Carl...

I actually learned the song from a guitarpro tab. Came here. realized the guitarpro tab was wrong and wondered why I couldn't get it to sound exactly the same so I stayed for the lesson to play it right. Mostly because I wanted to give my EMG 81/85 combo a try since they were recommended by someone I know and so far in a schecter Omen FR Extreme they sound really great. Took a bit of time getting use to the pickups so close to the strings but I absolutely love them now. Great lesson an it simplified a lot of things guitarpro had in it and it was completely wrong. It sounds close but everyone knows there is a big sound difference in hitting the note on a thinner string and hitting its corresponding note on a thicker string. Both are the same pitch but both do not have the same thickness to the sound. Again thanks for the very detailed lesson.

Just decided to learn this solo and I'm so glad I found these videos, it's gonna be so much easier than using tabs. One thing I noticed around 5:50 is that in the last section before the faster part, after the trills, you play 14th for all three notes on the G, whereas in the original only the first note on the G is 14th and the other two are 12th.

I've been playing for about a year and a half. I can't shred, can't sweep, and there's no way I can play this solo. With that said, I'm gonna learn it anyways. I can play all the notes (very slow), and after practicing for a week or two, I am getting slightly better at sweeping. I'll come back to this comment if I am ever actually able to play the whole solo comfortably. (probably in multiple years)

Yes just practice and practice unless you gets perfect..but anyway..guitar lessons has no ending...I've been playing guitar for 8 years..I'm professional now..but ..I have many many more to learn and practice... Good first practice each and every parts in very slow and ..increase the tempo when you gets your notes perfectly done..and as you do it perfectly..then practice in the original tempo with metronome..just practice and practice unless it gets perfect...All the best mate..!

@@joshuakennedy5629 Going good so far! I've made way more progress than I thought I would to be honest. I've definitely got some more work to do, but I've gotten much better at sweeping and playing fast in general. I'd say go for it. As long as you start slow enough and slowly work up then I see no reason to not learn some difficult stuff even if it seems way out of reach at the moment.

@CompleteProducer84
@CompleteProducer84 4 года назад
I know you said average basic guitar player, but it really depends on your exact skill level. For this solo, you need to be competent at fast alternate picking, sweep picking, string skipping, trills, and just overall feel since it’s an emotional solo. These skills take most people years and thousands of hours to hone on a level similar to Petrucci, save for the very rare person who learns incredibly quickly. If someone already has all of the skills needed for this solo, I’d say you could start to get it down in about a month if you practice it a half hour per day. Keep at it - regardless of if your level, practicing this solo will only make you better!
