It's important to note than all of the dry tops let in water through the bottom if you swim. If you end up swimming with only a dry top in cold water, you will get wet and cold. Not even a $700 GoreTex dry top will change that.

Thank you for saying that, confusing talking about 'dress for immersion' then dry tops with no bottom/waist gaskets its not really dry.

I just use a neoprene vest. Keeps me warm and gives me all the mobility I need. Helps you float too.

Hmmm. Great topic. I saw one of your older videos about the pants/skirt/jacket with neoprene collar and rubber wrists and then layers. I liked that setup quite a lot.

Thanks for this education. While I have a Dakine 4/3 wetsuit that I plan on using when water temps drop below 60 degrees but I don't have dedicated paddling gear. One concern I have with the wetsuit is potential overheating. I just picked up this sport/recreation so don't own a separate paddling top. I do have a very nice hydrophobic STIO Environ "shell" jacket that has been a go-to for snow skiing that could be use as a rain jacket so I'll also consider using it as a lighter weight paddling/rain jacket. I could not tell what that last blue top was that you just called it "this top here" but I did find a Level Six Baffin top for $40 off eBay so this video did help give me a direction to seek out some bargains

In my books, a wrist gasket is an "at least"-feature: Water running down the arm, inside the jacket really is annoying. Which brought me to the Palm Atlas multi purpose jacket with Neoprene/PU(?) gaskets plus velcro closures at the wrists.Downside there: Not only does it flush like all those jackets as mentioned in the video - it can keep a good amount of water. On a rescue exercise I first had to put my arms up in the air to drain the excess water from the arms ...

So is it possible to mate a dry top and dry pants together at the waist? Or is a dry suit the only other option?

Kokatat Idol dry suit separates the top and bottoms. So it functions as either a dry top or a dry suit.

Does NRS have a option? Would the NRS Flux Dry top and NRS Freefall Dry pants work? I read you can roll the tunnels together, not exactly sure how that works

Ken what do you suggest for us west coast Northern pacific guy's? Typically we wear a 3mm farmer john with a 2 mm wet suit top. Almost all of us do. I think we just need a good splash jacket. thanks

I think it depends on what you are doing, and what kind of boat, and how cold the water is, and how quick you can get to shore or back in your boat. I use that set up a bit, as the 3 mil farmer john is warm, and doesn't constrict too much in your shoulders. The 2 mil, if it is a good surf top, will be super stretchy too. Dry tops are just a lot more comfortable (except the neck) if you are white water river paddling, as you can roll and get smashed pretty good, and no water will come in. If you swim though, you will get wet. If you know you are getting wet (swimming, or in surf) I think wet suits are good. I like a 3 mil farmer john, with a splash top or dry top, as that is the easiest to paddle in. And, those shirts he showed are super comfortable, and great for keeping you cool, and not sun burned in warm places (tropics).
