In this video, I discuss 3 different techniques for a quick and effective pop up.
They are...
-The short board pop up technique from the thighs
-The long board po up technique from the toes
-The back foot technique.
I also discuss the pro's and con's of using your knee for the pop up, and how to break the habit.
Enjoy!

I've surfed for around 8 years, and in when I was in my beginner phase I trawled the entire internet for a decent pop up video without much success. I can honestly say this is the best and most comprehensive tutorial I've ever seen, and very useful even now as an intermediate to improve my technique. Thank you so much Ruby 🥰

Ruby! I'm so happy I found your video. The back foot pop up is a game-changer for me. I'm tall with long legs and I struggle to get my front foot far enough forward in my Pop-up. Your back foot Pop-up technique allows me to leverage the strength of my back leg to get me just enough time to get more upright and get my front foot in a better position. Thank you!

I agree with everyone else who says this a very helpful video. Your observation that the back foot popup creates a wider stance than the thigh popup exactly matches my experience (I'm a perpetual beginner). I still prefer the thigh popup because it's quicker and feels more rhythmic, but the back foot popup places my front foot farther forward on the board. Putting more weight forward helps me avoid stalling out on waves, which is a chronic problem I have. So I'm always a bit torn between the two, but I think sticking with the thigh popup will pay off in the long run.

I wish I had watched this when I first transitioned from a longboard to a fish! I quickly realized how dependent I had become on the knee technique, and how hard of a habit that is to break. Now that I've mastered the thigh/shortboard popup, I'll never go back. This was an excellent and informative video. Thanks Ruby!

Thanks! Trying to get back into surfing after more than 25 years and this was really helpful! I learned to surf as a 7 year old, and never rode a board longer than 5'10", so popping up was instinctual until I had to stop because of moving from Carlsbad CA to Washington DC. Now it's like starting over. Being 56 and somewhat out of shape doesn't help. Anyway, thanks so much, will try all of them to see which feels easiest to get me standing again :)

Thank you for this video! I have been surfing for 47 years. I started on a short board and use the standard pop up from the thighs technique. 20 years ago I started riding longboards as well. And what has happened is performing the pop up from the thighs over the years I have trauma on my rear foot big toe from banging it on the longboard. Something that didn’t happen on a short board. So I am going to try the from the toes and rear foot technique to see if that works better for me. This will take a little work because the technique I use now comes automatic without thought. Thanks again!

Note: the back foot has the advantage that it allows you to rotate your hips thus making it easier to put your legs in under you to stay more compact and stable. Especially on backside waves this can be good in combination with your hands being not leveled up on the front of your board. By rotation of the hips and shoulders a bit earlier you can set up your turn a bit sooner, helpful for intermediates who have a hard time turning soon enough on steep backside waves.

Great video, a lot of information here and very concisely laid out. If you watch pro surfers pop up in slow motion they seem to be a mixed bag of “short board” spring up and back foot or chicken wing pop up. Seems to depend on height,weight ,type of board,etc. They are so fast and fluid that even when they go back foot/front foot it looks like both feet together. I seem to do a mixture of the two myself depending on length of board I’m riding (and how my fitness is going now I’m 61 and don’t spring up a s well as I did !) Big thumbs up for this presentation!,

I'm typically a long boarder who started off with the toe pop up but found myself naturally using the thigh pop up as I got stronger without thinking about it. However, recently, when trying to get back into the short board for variation, I'm finding it hard to transfer the skill. Probably a stability thing but will try the backfoot first thing.

Normal for 99% of the time I read it or hear it I don’t say or type a word. Just go on. For some reason perhaps it being 5:30 and just waking sipping my morning jo, I will say that when I see or hear it, so often it seems, my mood becomes a bit dampened with a feeling of sorrow to again encounter it, and get a little disheartened. The one who created gravity, and the infinite span of energy waves both great and small. (some of which we ride upon!) The one who took less than 1 trillionth the mass of this planet and formed the 7 billion humans we share it with. Our God, our Creator I do know is 100% real. I tell you I had a profound experience 12 years ago and it changed my life. Blessed are those who believe but have not seen. Please believe. Yes there is a Lord Jesus Christ our savior and yes there is evil and the opposing forces they are doing battle on this planet as we speak. Battle for souls. The most widely reproduced book on this earth is the Bible and in it Exodus 20 states among 9 other basic guides for living is the one reminder to be reverent when speaking of our Creator. You are very deeply loved just as a newborn perfect child by your Lord. Have nice days.

I learned the longboard pop-up technique first, then quickly learned to do the thigh pop-up. Then I found myself naturally started doing the third technique with knee pointed to the side because I guess it’s the easiest (don’t need to spend time finding the board with your toes, nor the enormous abs strength of the thigh pop-up). I found that I actually lose quite some speed with this third technique, especially on a smaller board, because of the flared out knee, it creates more resistance. I wonder if you’ve observed the same. I’m switching back to thigh pop-up.

To be perfectly honest everyone has there own style/technique. Whatever anyone says you just can't beat two feet landing perfectly in sink on the board at the same time. Sometimes the back foot will be slightly there first but timing and wave type will dictate that as well. If your learning , always good to practice pop up's. Picking the right wave to catch is probably one of the most overlooked topics when teaching learners.

Ruby this is the best pop up video on the internet. You're the only person on RU-vid to have clearly elucidated the thigh pop up - which is what pros use on shortboards. It's kind of a shame that more surf instructors aren't teaching this. Also, how the hell did you get this footage? Did you use a drone?

Hi Ruby, thank you! Although I don't doubt your thighs are more involved in the short board popup than the long board popup. In the end of the frames at 1:25, where you are demonstrating the short board popup. You can see, your toes touch the board. No big deal, but would love to see you do this on a shorter board, where they could not touch because they were hanging past the tail of the board, where they couldn't. At any rate, thank you!

First of all, awesome video. I will definitely use it in the future to improve my pop-up technique! However, as a rather beginner surfer I have two questions. Lately I've been trying to perfect the shortboard technique with the thighs but I always end up pushing with the knees themselves and at 1:25 it also appears that you have your knees on the board. Are you actually pushing with them before popping your legs forward? And my second question, I'm a pretty tall guy (6.4ft / 1.95m) and am pretty sure that my knees would not have the best support on a shortboard given its dimensions. Would it be more practical for me to master the "chicken wing" technique?
@cnghiem67
@cnghiem67 2 года назад
The contact points are the knees. Very athletic, experienced, agile people can pop up starting with their arms fully extended. You see this when surfers have already caught the wave but are waiting fur it to become more critical before they get up. With regards to height, you just need to use a board that is appropriate for your skill level. Once you are good enough, you can move down to a shorter board. I would recommend trying to master the pop up instead of the chicken wing technique if you can.
