Recipe and Ingredients:
3 medium potatoes (300 grams)
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup potato broth
1 teaspoon dry yeast (7g)
1 teaspoon sugar
3 3/4 cups (450 grams) of all-purpose flour
knead the dough
1 tablespoon cooking oil (I used Avocado)
1st Variation- melted butter, honey, and salt
2nd Variation- powdered sugar and cinnamon

Ugh this looked very interesting until more flour than potato came into the mix. That's literally 3x the flour than the dehydrated potato amount would be.

I feel like they'd go better as wider, flatter discs like fried dough if you're going the topping route. Or maybe in the puff ball, pipe in some chocolate filling or something? Give em a split and load them up like a baked potato? Sour cream, chives, bacon, etc. Tons of options.

I find it crazy you’ve never heard of a potato donut before! I live in Pennsylvania and they’re huge around here! You find it often in Amish markets but even our local grocery stores carry them. I always thought this was a normal thing. At the PA farm show one of the most famous food stands is the potato donut stand!

Living in Pennsylvania Dutch Country(Berks County,Pa.), this potato donut is know as a Fasnacht. It is served on Shrove Tuesday,which is the day before lent. It is usually served here with powdered sugar or molasses.

I've seen those in my local Price Chopper, but was so disappointed because they were super dried out. Next time I get the Amish donuts at the mom and pop place behind me, I'm going to go through the ingredients and see if they might be similar at all.

@@TheoRae8289 They should be fluffy but they really are just dough and can be dry if they were not deep fried hence the maple syrup. I was not impressed either with them. They are, for sure, not Dunkin Doughnuts

A hunnerd or two years ago when I was a kid, they were called Spudnuts, and every town had at least one Spudnut Shop. Delicious. They all went away, though. Dunno what happened to them, but they sure were good.

These are great. You do need to adjust the flour depending on the type of potato. I tried "instant mash" and it did not turn out as good, but it is easier. Great with soup as it soaks up a lot of liquid.

The hair situation is disturbing my reality. Back in the 70's there was a donut place called SpudNuts and they were delicious. I guess they just added potato flour to their donut mix. Doubt they did all this but this video reminded me of them. Thanks. Great Vid.

Seed oils are fine, calm down. There are no health problems with them other than consuming too much fat, which is the case with any oil. No reputable study has shown an association between linoleic acid and heart disease or inflammation and there’s been a lot of looking.

This reminds me of Vetkoek in South Africa and add savory/curried mince or chicken mayo...it's also called amagwinya in South Africa. Staple food especially for people commuting to work in the morning.

Cooked for family on two nights ago, always a favourite. But should keep to weekend meal, doesn’t take to long, but after work a busy evening to get gravy, batter and sausages all done. Chipolatas are good as a thin sausage and cook through quicker. Greater recipes and a family favourite in our house. I’ll have to try the marmite in the gravy, new one on me, but I leave in NZ and marmites a pantry staple here, so easy to try.

Why do you not use vegetable or seed oils? Better smoke point and flavor with the peanut oil? Do you only do that for frying or even when you're making your steaks and pork chops?

In South Africa, there is a similar recipe call Vetkoek or Amagwinya where it is either eaten with curried mince, cheese and tomato, chicken mayo or whatever you like.

We have a very very similar thing in South Africa called a vetkoek 'fetkook' or fat cake. It's a bit more dense and doesn't have potatoes but very close to the same thing

obviously not sonny, but my partner is also allergic to peanuts so we use either veggie or avocado oil. As long as it's high smoke point, you'll be fine.

peanuts are seeds, peanut oil is a seed oil! Like soybeans, lentils, and other legumes, peanuts are edible seeds that grow in pods. Still, most people think of them as nuts, along with tree nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts. (Unlike other legumes, which grow on vines or shrubs, peanuts grow underground.)
