While I would be tempted to say "it depends," I will in this video pick what I believe is the best band for me or for prepping. It isn't any of the usual suspects! Note that you will need an amateur radio license to use it. It's very easy to get, go for it!

We tried 6m simplex just to see how it performed, and clubmembers all across our upper-middle size city could communicate easily. It was awesome! Then everyone went back to the VHF repeater to continue talking about how awesome it is. Doh!

I've been doing SSB, FM and FT-8 on 6m every day for a week after putting a delta loop multi wave lengths high. I let FT-8 run for hours on end and I jump back and forth between the other modes throughout the day. A week later I have made like 4 QSOs all on ft-8. PSKreporter shows my signal heard coast to coast and even furthest south point of S. America and even CHINA on one occasion. It's magically barren of people.

Every person's situation is different, but if you're able to string up a fairly long wire, I would go with 80 meter NVIS, or ground reflecting off the atmosphere waves which provide reliable comms regardless of obstructions or elevation. This is because the waves travel vertically and then reflect straight down in a radius of several hundred miles. From New York I can reliably communicate (sideband voice comms) all over the northeast with under 100 watts.

As a Prepper I am a big fan of the 6m band for all the reasons you have stated. Think it should be prepper radio operators SOP to use it. As you say it is on most HF radios unlike 2M. Best wishes Larry M3MPD

Very interesting. In Corby UK. We have a repeater on 70cm and I have a radio tuned set to rx and tx on the freq. When working in my garage I have never heard a single person on the repeater for 2 weeks. I call out several times a day for any contacts. No reply. Yes it is working. But nobody uses the repeater. When I was on holiday in Louith up North I only made 1 contact in 7 days on another repeater. Very frustrating. Many years ago the Repeaters was crammed with use. George 😬

I don't think there is a clear cut answer to this, I would say it depends what you need, a few miles or up to 50 miles depending on the scale of an incident and how many local amateurs there are, most older equipment won't have 6m. Also the terrain has to be taken into account, hills and trees are not good at v.h.f. and u.h.f. so 160m or 80m is probably better for base stations. Do stations need to be stationary, walking or in a vehicle? I went out and operated on 2m f.m. with my FT817ND in the clear with a dipole and about 20 miles was just o.k. I don't remember what aerial he used. 6m might be okay but the two stations I hear are only about 6 miles away and not too strong but I don't know what aerials they use, I have an indoor dipole. In the 80's I used a converted Pye Bantam xtalled on 70.260 MHz (4m) ½ Watt a.m. and when I went over the top of a hill by about 6 feet signals would disappear so operating from the valley on v.h.f. would be no good. I think here in the UK our mountain rescue teams use a low VHF band (40 or 60Mhz maybe) for their local communications - usually in difficult terrain (mountains, valleys, forests etc.) in remote areas without repeaters.

Thank you sir for an excellent presentation. I do have 6 meters in my base HF unit, and one of my Yeasu HT’s. We have to convince our Chinese manufacturing friends to begin putting 6 meters in their myriad of HT’s that they blitz the British and American markets with. By the way you never mentioned average distances with a 50 watt base unit or with a 5 watt portable. Thank you.

In our local experimentations, 6 meters and 2 meters are plagued with wildly varying antenna systems. We have a mix of horizontal and vertical polarized antennas that just make it all a mess. I know as hams we all like ssb, but vertical polarized fm is the way to go for reliable local. We have found that ssb doesn't really benefit the signal much on vhf. I honestly think that 2 meters fm has an edge over 6 meters. 6 meters is noisy around here. Especially now that it has been open alot and people still aren't using it! lol 73, KF0BBU

I agree Gilles, I try to make local FM around Marseilles on 6M but no-one there ! Most of time the QSO are on lower part of the band in SSB or FT8... You right the band is realy magic and give us some nice surprises with DX, as two days ago around midnight with the band supposed closed i was able to QSO a brasilian station PR7XB (6970 Kms, in FT8 of course). I will try to initiate a local QSO on 51.500 FM and discuss about it to the local radio club... I cross my fingers 😉 73 , Eric F5GEB

I don't have a radio capable of 50mhz, all I have is a xiegu g90 and a dual-band btech, along with a handful of dual band HTs. I do try to listen on 6m on my SDR every now and then and have never heard anyone on that band. It's a shame because the antennas are ridiculously easy to build, easier than even 10m or CB.

Jil, in ideal terrain / groundwave capable comms. yes 50mhz is great but if you live in my side of the Mediterranean (SV1-land) than that's not (line of sight) optimum, with the mountainous regions and the deep valleys, then Jil, the king is NVIS here in my neck of the woods, but luckily, with a bit of groundwave radiating antenna......... it compensates for 6m if you're within groundwave reach. So every case is different but there is no one frequency range that will cover it all, also in my country UHF rural seems to work better than VHF, that is comparing to 2-6m wavelengths. rain or shine, good propagation or not, the military standards are always superior to the amateur radio ones, that is NVIS (time vs frequency dependent) capable wavelength! And even there, depending on the latitude you live, also changes....example: in the summertime 40m in the med is open all day for local use, but in the artic circle you have to go way, way lower to about where HF meets MF......... And in the dense jungle type areas? you can assure VHF/LOWER UHF is like transmitting within a dummy load box. But, again in my area, in gorges, mountains, islands .....even within a ship's cargo hold, NVIS is king. Also, many thanks for the great vids you share with us, hope to see more green radio stuff!

@@aarongriffin81 Thanks for the reply. Two (2) of my neighbors reported that they heard my transmissions on their TV sets. Although fed by a local cable TV system their TV sets are still radio receivers. One (1) of these people also heard me on their home stereo system. My equipment all have a good earth ground and I was transmitting on 6 meters via my Icom 756 pro 2 at approx. 50 watts. These neighbors and I are located in the suburbs within 200 feet of me.
