👍IN THIS EPISODE
Our first day of real sailing (with an instructor) happens today. We are in Valetta, Malta taking the RYA Competent Crew Course and learning to sail. Sailing School Malta is definitely the best sailing school for families.
We are on a five-day sailing course and in addition, we are spending 10 days living as a family on a sailboat. It is a life-long dream of ours to live full time on a boat. This experience is the first step in achieving that goal of moving from full-time RV living to being a full-time sailboat family

It is a YT thing, they have had some issues with perverts on channels with kids so they disabled comments on all channels with kids until they can resolve it. Thanks Publi, you are so kind. I do think it is so important to share all the emotions we are going through in order to show the realities of this lifestyle. It does no one any good to present it as a constant vacation at 5 star hotels. Ha.

WorldTowning 4 Hr Work Week is totally possible!! Many things you do for the WT company can be outsourced, I bet. I think regardless of the cruise, you might want to think about this more seriously....seriously. Nothing is forever and you can always take back tasks when you want. Sailing will be great and time will reveal itself as you become master sailors. You could develop something to share with those you meet at the docks as you sail from country to country. Tip you probably know. You must be able to see the horizon to maintain your equilibrium, Jessica. Looking forward to the next vlog!

You could spend a few months just sailing the Mediterranean and around the Iberian peninsula until you become an expert. There's more to sailing than just sailing you will need to elan how to navigate the old fashioned way in case your Satnav breaks, ideally, you will need to learn how to repair electrical equipment, and diesel engine servicing etc. There's a good bit to know, by sailing around Europe first you will learn all the pitfalls. A good way to get some offshore experience would be to sail off the west coast of Ireland if you can do that you are ready for anything, maybe take a lesson from someone in Ireland out of Galway in summer .
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning 5 лет назад
I think I just broke out in a sweat thinking about boat repairs, but, as Will says, "there is YT video for everything!" I love sailing location suggestions, but we get so ugly in cold weather and Europe is cold! Yikes, thoughts on that?
@johhny711
@johhny711 5 лет назад
@@WorldTowning Summer can be warm even in Ireland , the west coast of Ireland will give you plenty of wind and large swells, not far offshore , so it's ideal to learn in an place that you will be no more than a few miles from shore, a short course on maintenance would be a great addition, there's nothing like hands-on experience with these things , and of course you right RU-vid videos are great . You will want to get a little into uncomfortable weather to learn how to handle it large swells and heavy wind , great fun and fast.

The more that I watch, enjoy and learn from your videos, the more I am glad that I am one of your patrons on patreon. Also I noticed very quickly that the sailing instructor that you have is also a very good teacher. I noticed this being a former car driving teacher in Chicago, helping drivers qualify on motor coach in the mountains in Yosemite and listening to the stories I have heard from a former sailing instructor who I thought was also a good teacher. Also a lot of the comments for this video are right on. To learn well you need to move from the known to the unknown and never moved directly to the unknown. It was fun watching how fast everyone in the family picked up the new skills and terminology. Thank you for your always fun and educational videos no matter what your endeavors. Also please take the time to enjoy your experiences offline, without the camera and laptop.

What you guys need to do is learn to sail. But as you homeschool and work then pay a skipper /captain to help. This in my mind and sailing myself is what you should do. Here I would highly recommend a Scandinavian. It is hard work and serious stuff out in the ocean. Not like sailing around the Greek Islands.

I ran a business that took up 80 hours a week and refitted a 42 ft sailboat while living on it with my wife and child. Just remember if you need an excuse any excuse will do. Our first winter on the boat we had a foot of snow on the boat. I am currently out fitting another boat to circumnavigate and will be leaving ether in march after surgery to repair a torn bicep tendon.
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning 4 года назад
But, did you both you and your wife work 80 hours a week and homeschool two kids or did she handle everything else while you worked? The problem is not one person working so much, but both of us work long hours. There is no one left to take care of everything else. Plus, we don’t want to work so much, we want to enjoy the boat with our kids. I agree though, excuses are just that. But, safety is key and with both of us working more than fulltime we believe our safety would be compromised because of exhaustion. Thanks for sharing your inspiration!

Love it! We had snow early in our trip... it wasn't fun. Good foul weather gear is SO important. But, what doesn't kill us.... Thankfully, you almost never die. Working is hard while sailing, especially online work. Try to find ways to split the time. Work some days at anchor/in port. Sail without work commitments (especially Jess!). The sickness part of it seems to pass. I get sick as well, but not after we were going for long. Looking forward to seeing more and hearing the stories! It won't be long until the kids will be running the whole thing.
@jsueiro1
@jsueiro1 5 лет назад
Hi Tony! We may come calling to pick your brain! The couple on the boat with us for a day had some amazing foul weather gear, great suggestion. We are thinking only weekend sails to start so we are not stressed about work/school. We are not on a plan to circumnavigate the world or anything, well, not at least in the beginning. So the plan is slow. We might need some slow down time after 2.5 years in an RV and a year backpacking Asia. Ha. Glad to hear the sickness can fade. I hope they are running the whole thing. You will have to come join us once we know the port from the starboard! Big hugs to all of you.

you need much more experience and much more planning for a boat watch a few boat channels that talk about repairs and being on the hard maybe look at SV Delos and Out chasing stars (on youtube) to see different examples look at delos on the hard getting ready to sail ; out chasing stars has a newer boat but there is still a lot of maintenance
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning 5 лет назад
Thanks Helen! Yeah, we know we have some learning and research (and money saving) to do before we take to the open waters, hence starting the process very early. The boat maintenance is the biggest obstacle I believe, balancing that with everything else. Yikes.

When you’re in Northern Europe go visit Mads at Sail Life and he’ll give the honest scoop. I think it would be way too difficult to do everything you do right now on a boat. Save it for later. I totally agree, that is why we need to give ourselves several years to figure it all out. I know, I did see that on their channel. Do not sail! You will spend all of your time at the docks in order to get all your work done. Just look at all the other sailing channels.. Gathering clean water and boat maintenance consumes the channel. The maintenance alone gets uninteresting to the viewer. Most of the excursions will be from the marina and back again. It just sounds tough with all the family obligations.
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning 5 лет назад
Sounds like RV life! Ha! I don't think we will be big on showing maintenance as we don't do that with the RV either. We have no desire to be a "how to" channel, that is what our business is for and our private clients. We just want to reach more remote lands with culture and people we would never meet otherwise. I think it would be great to share them and the culture with our community. I have not seen other sailing channels doing that. Have you? I am not always up on what is happening. Ha. However, we would need to modify our life a bit to do it.
