I discovered kali because of a karambit that was bought for christmas a few years back. Found the design very interesting. Then found Doug Marcaida (im hoping I didnt butcher his name.) After practicing kendo for close to 20 years. I wanted to incorporate different things into my style.

I practiced Judo for 25 years, but never went into an armed style. I got into firearms, but some type of sword art may be interesting.

Awesome info video. I do love the way a ginunting or Kukri bites in hard when it makes contact with something. And also how it bunches the material being cut into the sweet spot of the recurve when you get a good draw cut in. I bought the wife a cold steel kopis machete as a joke gift, and she liked it more than the flowers lol. It’s in her trunk all the time now.

I use my very sharp custom Bowies, have e never cut myself yet, but I have worked weapons a lot. I want that ginuntang (sp?) badly. What an incredible cutting power with the recurve. But I collect Bowies and fighting knives, and Bowies are my heritage. Thanks so much for the training, Paul. Makes this old Judoka very happy.

My grandfather was a butcher and sell pork in the wet market. His preferred butcher "knife" was a modified itak. It has a wide and thicker blade. It was so sharp that when he runned the tip of his itak on the pig's belly, it bursted open with innards popped out. He can cleave a pig's thigh bone with it in two swings. And when you look at where he cleaved it, it looked like he used an electric bone cutter.

Awesome video, those blades are scary man! The stick to blade timing is crazy!! Holding it backwards haha 😂 i love that 😂😂 would love to see you going full pelt with your favourite blades, but also please don't cut your arm off! (pretty sure with your skill set you wouldn't!)

From what I've studied, many Filipino edged weapons began as work tools in an agricultural setting.

main ones are fwd curved -the recurved blade i think is the talibong which goes one way for chopping and recurves for slashing -like yatigan which has the tip back in line with grip for accurate thrusting-found back edge sharpened at tip interesting-im a fan

Forward Curved Blades Filipino - Ginunting adopted by Ph Marines, Binolang Visayan Blade, Pinatari old forward curve blade in Pangasinan (Extinct blade profile). There are other forward curved blades in PH the three examples are just my favorite ones.

Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. I recently started practicing with a training ginunting, and I noticed two things: When performing Witiks/Abanicos, you hit with the flat of the blade correct? I didn't really realize this training with sticks as the surface area is the same. If this is correct, these would be more for stunning/impact damage then? In Chinese martial arts I have seen the broadsword swung in a back fist motion hitting with the side of the sword instead of the edge. I know bolos are made out of a harder steel than most Chinese performance blades, so I get it could still do serious damage. When thrusting with the ginunting, you have to thrust at an upward angel due to the curve of the blade right? I am been playing with this idea. Would you advise a slight upward angel or more of an obvious upward/uppercut type motion when trusting? I have downloaded the Karambit and knife fighting DVDs and loved them. I did not specifically see a video on single sword, especially using a ginunting. Do one of the Kali trainings Vol. 1 or 2 touch on this? Thank you. Love seeing your training videos.
@kalicenter
@kalicenter 3 года назад
Witiks are contacted either with the side corner or top edge. Even with the side corner this technique still splits people wide open due to the force and being hit with thin steel. Thrusts are performed both straight thrusts and curving depending on which tactic you need at a given time. The shape doesn’t change the anatomy of the techniques it just gives the points I talked about in the video.

Hi, This was an amazing video! was about to get a tanto style blade but now I am hooked on to kukri's, can you please share your thoughts on comparing these two and what might be better specifically for a combat scenario (not going to use knives as survival/bush craft, I'd rather use an axe/machete for that).
@bigguy7353
@bigguy7353 Год назад
For close up fighting I'd suggest a medieval style long dagger with a crossguard, which can slash and stab, although much better at stabbing. Kukris are great, are heavy and slow in my experience, but in a jungle they are legendary. Depends where you live and what you need it for.

In my opinion the machete, or any machete like weapon, is one of the best as far as pragmatism. It's like you said: you can hunt with it, forage, fight long range of close range, or wield it alongside a firearm, spear, or dagger. Definitely my favorite style blade, for sure👍
@bigguy7353
@bigguy7353 Год назад
But no cross guard. It's a risky tool for fighting. But still very solid and multi-functional. Which is why I call it a tool.

Hey Paul, I’ve seen combat ginuntings and bolos with a handguard covering the grip. Does the handguard affect the manueverability and manipulation of the weapon in any way?

I'm currently practicing Vee Jitsu since 8 months ago. I hope to be ready for an edged weapon some day and I would like to get a guininting. Are "Del Prado" weapons any good or can you recommend me another crafter?. Excelent content and thanks for sharing.

Prado Blades are issued to Philippine Force Recon Marines. They are all forged for war by an actual retired PFR Marine. Of all the bolos on the market today they are the only ones that see real combat. For a real battle tested and approved blade of today’s times they are the only FMA blade I will use and recommend to anyone looking for a truly authentic war bolo. If you’re looking for anything else then anything else will be good. 👍🏼

4:55 I think isn't prudent expose all brachial artery in a knife fight. A fortunate cut by the opponent and you remains 15 seconds in Earth. Same for the forearm and hand: good for camara, death in real scenario.

... that's not a recurve. A recurve has an initial curve in one direction... then RE-CURVES back the other way. There are many recurve blades that terminate with a forward curve, but what you have is just a forward curve blade, not a recurve blade. Credibility = gone. I stayed despite the "kata" intro... but the verbal intro confirmed the suspicions aroused by the prior.

The majority of Kali techniques are adaptations of Spanish destreza vulgar with touches of silat. The slashing techniques actually are best suited for a longer saber type weapon.....so yes the talibong fits the bill better.. for me the biggest weakness of the gunting is it is not really designed well for thrusting and not not much bigger than a Bowie knife
