Welcome back Dram Fam, to The Whisky Diary. This week, we're talking about Smoky and Peaty Whisky!
I recently made a video on the differences between Smoky and Peaty flavours in Whisky: • Peat vs Smoke... What'...
I get a lot of questions asking for other recommendations, so here they are! I really wanted to give examples of a broad range of flavours and experiences, more than just the really peaty ones, so i've tried to weigh up those flavours, against the price!
Just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it's good.
The thoughts and opinions in this video are my own. I'm not, and will never be, paid to influence my opinion on any whisky or product I review. My palate isn't perfect, and we're all learning everyday... Whisky is a journey, I'm just bringing you along for the ride!
Have you tried New Make Spirit before? What were your thoughts? Comment below!!
Just like Whisky, knowledge is better shared.
Thanks for watching!

I always have: - Laphroaig - Ardbeg - Lagavulin - Port Charlotte Not the fancy ones. Just the basic stuff.

A really useful review. There are a number there I'd be interested to try. I'm still a fan of Oban, but that might just be because it was the whisky that converted me over to the smoky peaty flavours. Thanks very much.

Great list. What a wonderful intro to peated whisky. I do appreciate the lighter peated whiskies, and it’s fun to do a tasting like this layering on on the previous as you increase the complexity and strength of the flavor profile. Usually by the end of the evening I end up with the Lagavullin 16. Still my favorite dram. Thanks for the curated list!

I strongly agree with Port Charlotte and Ledaig. Really enjoy Ardnamurchan for the price. Prefer to spend extra for Corryvreckan over Wee Beastie. On the higher end of what I can consistently find, love Laphroaig Lore and Lagavulin 16.

I would put Oban 14 up the top, followed by Lagavulin 16 followed by Bunnahabhain Eirigh NA Greine followed by Port Charlotte followed by Bowmore 18 then Kilchoman, the Laphroig PX. I havent tried Ledaig or Benraich so may adjust after trying. From a value for money whisky for me it has to be Deanston 12 & Clynelish 14 (yes I know they aren’t Islay)

I am a big fan of the Port Charlotte 10, very rich and rounded. I have the Ledaig 10 on my wishlist. I would add the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, a long time favourite of mine. Of course, if we go up in price others would come to mind, but to me the price range in this video is what I go for usually! Great video! ;)

I get that slight smoke-like note on Glenfarclas 105 as well, in fact I get a hint of it in all Glenfarclas. I think in their case it’s coming from the direct fired stills that create a Maillard reaction in the wash as it heats.

Could well be! Such an awesome differentiator eh! I think I heard they also like to use fairly heavily charred casks in many of their expressions too. Either way, it’s magic stuff! Cheers for watching. Slainte! 🥃🥃🥃

I have constantly had Laphroaig 10 in stock since July 1982 and have been a registered Friend of Laphroaig since 1996, so... 😄 (I do have both official and independent bottlings, so the full range of ABVs etc.)
@Scotchtographer
@Scotchtographer 2 года назад
There is 100% a time and place for Laphroaig. I have a bottle of the quarter cask, and really do enjoy it as with the recent PX release, but not sure I’d feel too comfortable suggesting peaty newcomers go straight in for it 😅 I feel both Laphroaig and the Octomore range both require their own episodes to not only do them justice, but also give views an appropriate warning, haha! Slainte! Would love to nose around that collection of yours too!

@@Scotchtographer A valid viewpoint but not suitable for everyone. Laphroaig 10 was my first peated whisky and to this day, it is still my favorite. Everything since then has been a quest to find something even better and I have yet to succeed. PC10 and Talisker for me come really close but Laphroaig still wins. Hell I have a bottle of Laphroaig 16 on my shelf which is great but hasn't been touched in months because I still prefer the 10 right next to it.

Nice list.. surprised you didn't go for the Ardbeg 10 or Lagavulin 16. Of the ones you mentioned in your list i do like the nuances of the Ledaig 10... I have a PC10 otw to me and i reckon that' s gonna be a cracker Anyway, my fave smokey whisky in recent times is the Laphroaig 10CS (Batch 13) and Compass Box No Name 2...

I have a 7 year old cask strength Caol Ila from North Star and it's a trip. It has a lovely lemony barbecue nose which I also get on the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, though not on the Laphroaig 10. My tasting notes include oilskins and kippers, so perhaps something to drink on an Arctic expedition. It's been a long time since I tried the Caol Ila 12, so it would be interesting to compare.

Hi! I really like salty sea and smoky meat flavors - which whiskey would you recommend? (Ardbeg10 - Kilchoman Machir Bay - Caol ila 12 - (Port charlotte is currently not available here)) or maybe something else in a similar price range? Ledaig 10 is also an exciting good whiskey. I also really like the Benriach smoky 12.

BenRiach Smoky 12 suprised me, I cannot stop drinking this! Ledaig 10 (18 as well) is good peated whisky but no memorable point with current price. Ardbeg Wee Beastie is my favourite entry price heavy peat sherry, much fruity than Ten. Bruichladdich Port Charlotte I took 10yo and it's on the way to my home. Not yet taste Kilchoman and Caol Ila...

Jura 10 is pretty decent for the money. Not super peaty, but medium peaty and about $40/750.
@carlmartinlinder
@carlmartinlinder 2 года назад
Very nice selection. I agree to most of it. Perhaps take away the Caol Ila and replace it with a peated Glen Turret or an Ardmore for a different kind of peat. Machir Bay is great but the cask strength version is fantastic. Ledaig 18 is one of my absolut favorite peated whisky but then, it is of course a lot more expensive than the 10.....Oh and the Laphroaig 10 C.S....but then again, hard to get and more expensive
@Scotchtographer
@Scotchtographer 2 года назад
Looks like you went through the same mental process I did!! It started off as 4, then 5, then 6… then I replaced a load, realised there were some £80+ ones… ended up binning the list and going with my original ones haha. I think I’m going to do another “level” up, as it were…. Slightly rarer, slightly more expensive etc. I actually just ordered a Glenturret, but not a big fan of Ardmore myself tbh.

So, peaty and smokey are not the same thing? I have been turning from bourbons to more smokey scotch because bourbons (and most whiskeys) are too sweet for me. I tried Laphroaig 10 and really liked it. I would say it's very smokey, but does that mean it's peaty?
