Hi i bought this lens Sony 20mm f/1.8 G, what's a good number three lens besides the FE 28-70 kit lens for my Sony A7IV?

Great review. I've had this lens for about 18 months and it is one of my favorites. I use it for astro and it is great for that. I travel for most of my photography and really appreciate its compact size and light weight. In terms of a pairing, I would suggest the new Sony 20-70 f/4 G. It is also an amazingly sharp lens and I find it covers 90 percent of daylight situations. The added width (compared to a 24-70 or 28-75) is really useful. It is also quite light and good for travel. If I need more low light capability, I put on the 20mm f/1.8.

I just got this lens in March 2023. So far I love it. Love the tiny size coming from the Sigma 20mm f1.4 ART that was huge. This thing is the size of a kit lens. It will always be in my camera bag.

Thank you so much for this review after watching it i realized that i can return my 35 1.4 GM because i already have the 24-70 GM2 so i ordered this 20mm to pair it with my 24-70 and my sigma 85mm but i think i will also get the 50 1.2 for that exotic Boked look and after that i will get my 70-200 GM 2.. Interesting analysis! I am wondering if you have a preferred crop or aspect ratio (2:1, or 8:5, etc ) when considering the end photo using a wide angle lens? I actually think this would be a good topic for an extended conversation as I have never seen much commentary on the subject.
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Год назад
I should think about that for sure, but I mostly just compose with the full filed of view, then crop in the edit, when I think it improves the image. I do shoot video, with the plan of using letter box to give a "fake anamorphic" look.

Mark, I also really enjoy the 20mm focal length. Have you considered the Viltrox 13mm lens as an apsc option? For those working with apsc systems for cost or weight reasons, it might be one you’d want to explore.

Really interesting that you say that, it's actually the Viltrox 13mm that lead me to buy the Sony 20mm. It's my favourite filed of view now. I plan to compare the Viltrox on APS-C to the Sony on Full Frame, in an upcoming video.

Hey Mark great video. I’m almost ready to pull the trigger on this lens but have an A7c which doesn’t have breathing compensation. I’m mainly video oriented. Will the focus breathing be a huge issue with this lens? Would love your opinion.
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Год назад
It’s only really noticeable with a locked off shot, when you bring something within macro distance of the lens. I used the lens almost daily, for many months, before I even noticed any breathing and turned the breathing comp on. I wouldn’t even remotely consider it a deal breaker.

Indeed the 20 1.8 is a terrific performer. I sold mine in favour of the 16-35 G + 24 1.4 GM because a) I prefer 24 as my go-to low-light & walkaround lens and b) the 16-35 covers any ultra-wide needs plus some pseudo-macro shots at the long end. Yes, that combo costs a helluva lot more, but I'm also happier with the results. The 20 is great, it just didn't suit me is all.

@markwiemels
@markwiemels Год назад
When comparing an any 85mm lens to any 20mm lens, it’s really more about which focal length works for you, or your intended purpose. Both great lenses, but really different purposes, so I would focus more on that side of things, find your focal length. Just go on instagram and scan 20mm photos vs 85mm photos, see what look is what you want to achieve.

People always said that human eyes are close to 24mm, some say 35mm, some even say 50mm. It is funny because I always see at 20mm. 24mm is not as wide as my natural vision. 16mm is wider than my eye sight and just looks unnatural. 20mm really is the perfect focal length for me.
