@@SkullyBones448yeah, but not entirely. Although I've never seen another mobile game with that much (and very expensive) monetization. I played the game for years, but stopped a while ago. To much focus on buy stuff, and many in-game currencys. They keep adding those. Besides all that it's kinda a nice game.
This game is so hard pay to win and a whale milking machine, im a bit disapointesd u do advertisement for it. Brutal package prices and zero progress after a certain point without investing hundreds.
Ok since you include game from other years I'm gonna have to say X4 and it's not even close. Big learning curve but once you get into it there's is nothing like it. If you only take the games released this year then yeah Everspace 2 def.
Thanks so much for the shout out! As a team we appreciate everything you do to highlight space games of all kinds! Here's to a future filled with games set in space! 🚀
Everspace is good at what it does but I was really looking forward to a game that is as ambitious as star citizen but fleshed out and complete I was really hoping starfield was going to be that game unfortunately it was not spaceborn 2 looks interesting have to watch how it progresses
TBF, it's always shots fired against Elite Dangerous whenever other space games doing better things are being discussed. Hell, even snobbing the term "Elite Dangerous" is shots fired regardless. Other RU-vidrs seem to pretend that a space game called "Elite Dangerous" ever existed because it's not even included in their list of good space games.
@@maxdamagusbroskiI agree. It's quick because of the fast-travel system, except when you want it to be...such as walking on foot for 10 minutes on a planet to grab some random miner a slab of space ham. But the bonus is, you can fast-travel back once you get it :D
Spacebourne 2 is a good game, but it still needs some work around the edges. It can be incredibly ugly around those rough corners and some of the assets/textures could use some work or a facelift. The AI definitely needs some overhauling as well because it can be a bit weird at times. It doesn't help the game is incredibly janky and glitchy. However, with time, a lot of things could be addressed if they continue to support the game unlike their first game which they up and abandoned.
Yeah I got it it’s good but a bit of nightmare on steam deck to control unfortunately it’s far to sensitive to be able to fly well and I couldn’t lower the option any further so I couldn’t really enjoy it.
If Starfield had Spacebourne's features, it would be the best space game ever. That being said, once Spacebourne is completed, gets better voice acting (the AI voices are horrible), gets better sound design and ground missions, stops crashing so much, etc it will be truly one of the best.
Picked up Spacebourne 2 because I like supporting solo/small dev teams that have a ton of passion and some good ideas. I do hope it ends up being one of those long term projects that gets continuous improvements and content updates like Caves of Qud, Dwarf Fortress and Starsector.
My biggest problem with spacebourn 2 is the ai voices they are so terrible I had to mute the voice audio. After that playing the game is great. It's not the devs fault but whoever wrote the AI really needs to work on its vocabulary and pronunciation.
@@DragonHalo99 That , the fucking terrible (or rather nonexistant) UI, and the bugs did it for me. For something by a small group of people, or 1...can't recall, it's super impressive and like @Jasta85, I also hope they stick with it, Cyberpunk and of course No Mans Sky showed it WILL be appreciated, and in the case of something like SB2, it's understandable.
I'd agree with that, but for myself, Spacebourne 2 is the better game. Not by much, and it's still got more than a few rough edges, but Everspace 2 had an entire studio behind it and has hit 1.0 and then some, while Spacebourne 2 effectively was a one-man-show* until the second half of this year. It's such an impressive achievement and with the exception of multiplayer (which I don't care about at all, but I know many do), is or soonish will be, everything I was hoping for from Star Citizen so many years ago when I backed it via Kickstarter. (*) And he's doing it from Turkey, of all places. The economy there is, not so great, to put it very mildly.
it is indeed. i didn't like the rogue aspect of everspace so i was really hyped when the devs said that everspace 2 will be open world with resource gathering and stuff. the maps also look so great with those huge structures, it's a really fun game
Maybe, but isn't the full experience is over $100? Will keep an eye out for the opportunity to get the game plus all DLC for $60 or less, but not interested in spending so much on the hope that I like it.
I have a lot of fun with Everspace 2 from early access to final release. DLC to come next year! Surprised X4 did not get a mention with the DLC that got released this year.
For me X4 Foundations is I think very worth to mention. It has much improvements in 2023, a lot of new functions and with the borons a very nice nice race and very much new interesting ships never seen before.😊
And with its modding capability you can really tweak the game to your liking. Throw the interworlds starwars mod on there and you pretty much have the FPS starwars space game you always wanted.
Fully agree with you. I gues getting into the game is a bit too steep for most, hence the lack of attention. X3TC and X4 are the space sims where I've got the most played hrs within [3k hrs minimum for each, followed closely by NMS
surprisingly X4 is missing even when it did release a big DLC with Kingdom End this year. So in that regard it even added more content then ED this year. And Everspace 2 is indeed a great game in the genre of space looter shooter. To bad those games mostly don't go bigger then fighter ships. Also another game I think is missing is Space Reign, though haven't played it a lot due to it being Early Access, just like KSP2. But it does look promising and decent for a new spacegame. Though in that category I think Spacebourne 2 is indeed the better option so far.
OA seems to have a grudge against X4, he almost NEVER talks about this game, and i think it is one of the best space games ever, both in concept as well as a game.
@@efxnews4776I've got a grudge against X4 also so I understand. I've put in many hours but then I get hit with immersion breaking things like clipping into an asteroid or space station mid fight or something. This is something they could fix but don't it I'd rather crash and burn than get stuck. Maybe the new fixes fixed that but hard to get back into it and have to relearn everything. I literally was spending hours in one spot managing my empire which is pretty awesome. I know they have made many improvements but the clipping issue throws me off also having to re-learn how to do all the micro managing and other things makes it hard to get back into and buying dlc's when they have not fixed something as basic as clipping is a no go I've given them enough money thinking they would get it done my mistake. 😊
@@ltcshow6175 you are nitpicking, i'm aware of the clipping bug, yes, it is annoying, but to me this is such a small problem compared with what the game offers, that i'm didn't even think it is worth mentioned. Every game has it's problems and a game with the scope of X4 wouldn't be different.
@@efxnews4776a lot of it comes down to the fact that X4 is incredibly niche, even in context of space sims. It's not a very user friendly game, you end up spending a lot of time in me us which are not exactly easy to navigate and they are rather ugly to boot. And unless you are a die-hard stickler for economy sims and less everything else, X4 had a lot to be desired for when it comes to it's content outside of econ tycoon/empire building. Without a lot of mods and sheer luck, if you want to play the game as some solo Freelancer bounty hunter, you are going to be left wanting and light on actual content. It's a great space sim, but it's not for everyone. I gave a more than enough time and there is a lot that I like about the game, but it wasn't for me at the end of the day. Too much focus on the macro level of things that makes the micro seem like a after thought. If your really big into 4x grand strategy or sandbox strategy sims like Mount and Blade, X4 will be right up there for you. If you are not a fan of those, X4 can be a hard sell.
Yeah No Mans Sky does not deserve the hate it once received. It has had DLC worthy updates for the past several years and they've all been free. The game is solid now. Actually better than the original vision.
Honestly with elite I wish they would work on fleshing out the existing features more there are multiple game mechanics in elite that don't play very well with the newer systems.
@@DragonHalo99 agreed, would be nice with more variety in the rocks you visit, atmospheric planets would be a complete gamechanger as well! And when was the last ship added?
I'm pretty sure the last ship that was added was the chieftain or the t10 defender. Right around when they launched the thargoid stuff. There is one more ship if I recall but I can't remember what it was.
Flora and fauna on worlds with thicker atmospheres that you could fully explore, they really needed to do more with expiration. Extreme weather, snow, rain and the storms, maybe some new minerals are elements to find on these worlds with unique atmospheres something that doesn't exist on the periodic table. There's a laundry list of things they could do to make the game better but think they've lost vision. Still it's the best VR game I have
I said it before and I will say it again. If Frontier do not want to develop ED anymore, hand the reigns over to the players. Just let it go, modders would love to get their hands on it. Look at the ship related builds and mods in Starfield PRE developer kit. I know for a fact if I could tweak some settings I would come back to the game. Increase super cruise acceleration and deceleration by 5x or more would be enough to have my time feel a little more valued. Most friends I had liked private or solo more than open anyways so just let us run a modded server. If people saw that there were fantasy ships from all kinds of sci-fi in a more realistic space sim world like ED it would be game changing, at least in my opinion.
Ixion for me is the best game of 2023 because of its unique approach. One fault in your reasoning about starfield, it's not a space game. It's an RPG game in a space setting. Just like Colony Ship is not a space game but an RPG in a space setting. Spacebourne 2, Everspace and Astrox are true space games. Anyway keep up the good work because you are my RU-vidr of 2023. 😊
Missing star citizen on this list, even as just a mention since technically its not released yet, but them again neither is ksp2. Especially since the last few dev updates and release of pyro system around the corner will put it far in front of the other games on this list.
@@KamalaChameleon Thanks for looking out, still think it deserves a mention though. I jumped on board back in 2016 maybe earlier honestly don't recall only spend $175, so I do understand everyone's complaints that it's taking a long time. But then again recent success with the server meshing and the star engine demo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nWm_OhIKms8.html do really show what they have been working on. And the first bits of early footage of the pyro system are so much better then any of the mentioned games in this video. I can say I'm finally excited again about it.. less so that I need an even better pc to run it >.
"Around the corner", sure. Let me Google other user comments related to Pyro for a moment: "The Last citizencon in 2019 ended with a jump into the Pyro system so...", "...it seems like mid next year (2022)", "I have some decent hope for Pyro in Q2/Q3 (2022)..."
@@alzhaid2919 I dont disagree with you on this, it has been taking a long time. But just a quick google on for example olli43 and his vids from Pyro in Alpha testing is enough to show they are close to releasing it. But the skepticism is wel deserved.
Surprised me too, especially since I only knew OA for his Star Citizen videos (he has a Star Citizen playlist with 30 videos in it), though the last one is 2 years old and an Ad. There where some changes to SC since then, but the most notable (Persistence layer and server meshing) are on the horizon for 2024. Maybe he'll pick SC back up then.
No, I think he has another issue with SC. He included KSP II, which is in EA. SC is in EA as well kind of, they just call it differently, but it's basically the same state. So to be honest I think he is harming SC because i believe SC to be the best space game out there sort of right now. No game can challenge the scope and options you have in that game, not even ED I think.
@@rexi1414 Though I personally agree, that it doesn't do SC justice, it doesn't really "harm" SC as well as probably all Space-Sim interested players know about by know. Also, tbf, SC is still in a quite buggy state. Even though I can currently enjoy it, not all gamers will have the required patience to navigate it's bugs and pitfalls.
Every time I see ED, it honestly brings such a feeling of sadness how much they ruined such an outstanding core, they could easily recover if they'd just get some focus on it with devs who actually listen to the amazing community around them
Whist I`ve played all the games mentioned in this video and enjoyed some of them, X4 Foundation with his latest expansion remains the best single player space game experience in my opinion.
So far I played the demo of Everspace 2 and I wasn't disappointed. It reminded me some classic titles from the mid 90s- early 00's, it plays very similar. I was really holding out for Starfield, even spent the $100 to get it early, but after about 40 hrs, I just couldn't find more content after finishing the main quest and most side quests. It was rather tiring by level 25, so I had to push through and start ignoring the copy-paste bases on the planets. Ironically I also think Starfield is a looter-shooter, except not in space, but as an FPS. Bethesda forgot to include space and exploration into it.
I'd give an honorable mention to Starsector, The original alpha release was in 2011 and it has been continuously improved since then. It's only on it's 0.97 release, but is still actively being developed. I just hope it gets on Steam when they finally do the 1.0 release. Don't let the old school looks fool you. It has more depth than almost any space game on the market today. The mod community is also amazing, giving you tons of ways to play the game. I'm running 8 different mods myself.
I love Starfield as well, it just lacks a lot of variety in planets, as most are copy and paste, the lack of inner atmospheric flight, no true major threats besides the terramorphs and starbourne, and too many loading screens. Not to mention, Bethesda still doesn't know how to program land vehicles, or transition from space to atmosphere or atmosphere to space in 2023!
There should be a place for Eve Online on that list. Eve just celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023 and a major expansion (Havoc) was released early this month. Eve is by far the most ambitious, the most innovative, the most complex space game ever made. And even 20 years after release, it looks absolutely gorgeous. One of the most important games ever made.
For me Starfield is the best game for many years with a really rich world building. I find Elite & NMS too empty. Agree Everspace 2 pretty good and haven’t finished Starbourne 1 yet so will have to try 2 when I have.
So long as you are willing to accept the RNG content for what it is, it's a lot of fun. He is talking about "space games" in particular though, and I really feel like Starfield is a lot more than that, and sacrifices some spacegame stuff to be a broader game so isn't ever going to be the best space game. No Man's Sky however.. I don't understand why anyone plays that.
@@maxdamagusbroskiStarfield led me to NMS and it's way more fun. Starfield is outdated and boring af. Dull, barren planets you can't even manually land on. Copy/paste POIs annoying companions, crap outposts and way too many load screens. Not to mention all the bugs and broken quests.
I still love eve but don't have the time to play. My favourite space game this year though, released in 2019 is astrox imperium. I played for the first time this year and had an absolute blast.
Good for you.. but if you want to make that comparison I would personally say Everspace 2 is an Arcadey sideshow with many immersive features missing compared to Star Citizen
@@KamalaChameleon but sc is not a game. Its a money grabbing dumsterfire. Everspace is atleas a good game with lots of potential. Something sc will never have.
I played a good handful of Avorion and X4: Foundations earlier this year. I do wish X4 was multiplayer, but I had a lot of fun playing it solo. Both going from very in control of your own ship to eventually owning a fleet, and even stations. Avorion allowing you to host a server and have friends join you on space conquering.
X4 being single player game is actually something Egosoft is doing intentionally. They're focusing more on universe simulation that allows players to shape their universe any way they want. Saying that, they are also working on a feature that would allow players to invade universe of other players.
My biggest problem with space games at the moment is lack of VR. Elite Dangerous abandoned VR after the Odyssey update. Everspace 2 didn't include VR whereas the original Everspace did. No Mans Sky admittedly has VR, but I can't control the ships - whenever I want to roll the ship does a weird yaw at the same time. I cannot get that. EVE Valkyrie had the servers pulled meaning the game cannot even be played in single player mode. Currently the best space game for VR is House of the Dying Sun which is now 7 years old. What the hell happened to VR?
VR is and always has been a niche hobby. It's not going to change until the pricepoint drops and, weirdly, not everyone is cool with wearing bulky gear on their faces just to play video games.
The same thing that's always happened to VR. It's a buzzword for a few years, the hardware is way too expensive and cumbersome, adoption is way too low because of that so devs don't generally want to put a lot of effort into it when the market share is so small, so it eventually dies off. What killer title do I have to get VR for? HL: Alyx. That's the only AAA game I can think of, and since I can go watch a decent playthrough online, do I need to spend upwards of $1000 to play it myself? The bar to entry is too high, for too little reward.
I don’t think the problem is the price of the headset, now they are really affordable. The problem is VR doesn’t allow you to play in your sitting room lying on the sofa as most people prefer to do. VR industries is loosing interest and handheld devices are increasing in number, quality and interest… take your conclusion.
Starfield is a bit empty, but honestly that's what space is supposed to feel about. I only wish there were more story side quests and that the UC capital was three times as big. I enjoyed every second I played Starfield and I actually was fortunate not to encounter any of the game breaking bugs.
I bought KSP2 and refunded it the same day. An utter stinker and not close to ready for early access. I would expect bugs and some missing bits in early access in return for a discount, I wouldn't expect large portions of the game to be missing entirely but to charge full price. I won't be returning to it when released, my trust in the studio is gone
It's been said before but if you are into single player, space exploration and universe domination, X4 is deeper than the mariana trench. Not to take away from the games listed but this overlooked oddity has playability in spades. Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work 😀
I only included the games I actually played a bunch this year. If I didn't actually play the game, it can't be my personal game of the year. There's simply not enough time to play every game. :)
I agree the main thing that it does correct is the ship building aspect of the game. I wish a big studio would look at acquiring this title and just flesh out the AI and graphics. It would be the holy grail of space games.
Been playing a lot of spacebourne 2 lately (my DayZ crews is missing me}. The game still needs a lot of work but is pretty fun as it is. I feel that it has a pretty solid core that just needs a few wrinkles ironed out then fluffed out and it will be a great game. Most definitely worth the price of admission!
My personal favorite space games right now are X4, No Man's Sky, Ixion and Everspace 2. Ironically for players that want an immersive space flight experience (and haven't played it before) I would still recommend ED if they can grab it on a sale.
Good timing, as I just picked Everspace 2 up recently and have been meaning to give it a go. SpaceBourne 2 looks cool, but I will give it a bit more time in the oven before I jump in.
I love Everspace 2. It feels more like a looter shooter to me though. But then again, there is no clear definition of "space game", so i guess it qualifies. And i agree, it's the best game on your list. Tip: Bind a key to toggle Inertia Dampers on/off!
!that's what I like about Everpsace 2, yes, it's a Space Looter Shooter yes, but it still has proper 6 DOF controls and a supercruise mode! Some "full" space games don't even have that!
My love for SC is a dried mummified corpse in a forgotten tomb. There's a lot of money in that tomb but it's locked away along with any hopes for a complete and polished game. Please do not give them any more money.
yep, everspace 2 is great. already played it a bit in early access and started a new game at release and played completely through the campaign and side missions. i still have to try spacebourne 2, i bought it but haven't played it once. the first spacebourne wasn't bad so i have high hopes for this one to be even better. i still wish there were more space games though, especially ones that you can put hundreds of hours into, like X4. even better if they have good controls for a controller, like chorus so they can be played on the steam deck
So true, KSP was really rough the first couple of years of its early access period until they added larger parts and maneuver nodes. KSP2 is going through the same experience. The For Science update has been pretty fun so far. There are still a bunch of bugs that need to be worked out but reloading a save can usually fix things.
@@asm2750 The thing was barely working on 32 bits. Remember the rainbow cat when launching the game in 64 bits. Warning you this was a WIP...Stayed like so for at least 2 years. Optimization was even worst than KSP2 at the same state. People tend to forget or comment without even having the proper clues. Not mentioning the definition of early access. Anybody who really believe in this game and want to play it 100% fun should (already bought it or not) wait until full release, and at least 150 mods available on curseforge or spacedocks.
@@ObsidianAnt oh okay, thanks for the clarification. I would love to see a video with your thoughts on X4 and maybe where it stands in your mind compared to the other games on this list. Cheers from a long time subscriber and a thumbs up.
Everspace 2 is a great game but I suspect that Everspace 3 will set the bar for the whole genre - It's dev crew has been learning and still are. #everspace3
I am 36 years old, and I am just waiting for someone to make a STARGATE SG-1 FPS-MMORPG on unreal engine. And I am still aging, I am starting to think that I will have to learn programming and do it myself coz nobody is giving that EPIC franchise a chance to be made. If such a game were made it would make so much profit as there's millions of fans out there waiting for it. Even non-gamers would probably even buy just for the nostalgia.
I'm glad to see ED made the list though totally understand why it didn't get the number one slot (or even the top 5!) - however, I wonder if OA might be up for doing "Best ever space exploration game" and if so would ED fare better? Personally, I'm not a fan of shooter games and so those space games which are really 1st person shooters set in a space theme dont tick the box for me. ANy thoughts on the best ever exploration space game? P.
'Completed' Everspace 2 in early access and it was already awesome back then but haven't replayed the final version yet. Soooo many great games these days and not enough time to play them all 🙁
great video. one title I've been meaning to go back to and check out the recent expansions for is x4 foundations. did you ever get back to x4 kingdom end?
Sir, I could just listen to your videos on loop. Your channel is my ASMR to relax and sometimes doze off. And that is a good thing. Thank you for all the awesome content.
There's nothing that can compare with flying into a station and land inside it like in Elite Dangerous, I'm hoping Star Citizen will someday accomplish a similar feeling (even though they beat ED in every other aspect imho, just not very fleshed out yet) and Spacebourne is something I haven't picked up yet. Also No Man's Sky has been going strong and keeps on getting better every year. Everspace 2 is something I've been enjoying on my Steam Deck, still have to test if Ixion will run on it, think that'll be fun and lastly I've been putting off Starfield, even though I pre-ordered it and am very excited to play it, just not yet
@@sora2534Most agree it's just a fancy loading screen and you ain't actually traveling any distance. Just... *Pop* and you in the next system. It's a wait and see feature, just try to remain skeptical, it's CiG after all.
Dunno man, Starsector is still the best for me. I has it all - fighting, story, exploration, leveling, colony building, politics. Every genre in one game and without any of them being a must. You can just do one thing and be successful. And it's highly customizable and insanely mod supportive with active modding community. Every game on this list lacks all of the good points that Starsector has. Starfield is a maybe on that part, but the game itself is so bad no amount of modding and configurability can save it.
I feel like ignoring the controversy surrounding Kerbal 2 and the publisher's treatment of the studio is disingenuous while trying to say the game isn't up to par.
Tbh Starfield is not a space game, its a Bethesda game in space. And thats how i was able to play Starfield for like 2 days then decided yea not the game i was looking for. Why cant they just make a modern Freelancer? Best space game ever. Tachyon: The Fringe waa great too
Leaving out star citizen means your channel applies has some tastefulness. Yep everspace 2 and no mans sky are great titles. If there's a bored moment between gaming and family feel like giving legacy elite a go just for the old planet tech. Once one accepts the game is dead, might be worth a few more late nights before frontier implodes.
I picked up Spacebourne and Spacebourne 2 finished the first one but have yet to finish the second one. Will check everspace 2 as I am currently playing Chorus and having a blast with it.
Close to perfect video , but why not include other games as , eve online , star citizen ect...? By the way good job on noticing spacebourne 2 its one of the best space games for me who played good few of those and no game blew my mind as spacebourne 🎉
Сетевые игры уже начинают лагать, связь становится хуже из-за роста пользователей. Если только использовать локальные. Спрос на такие игры будет падать. А Elite помню еще на ZX Spectrum ))). Интересная была игра.
Man, I REEEEEEAAAALLY hope KSP 2 rebounds because SO many people were anticipating it to be a worthy sequel to the amazing first one. KSP is a MUST play for any serious space-lovers and I hope I can eventually say that in the future about KSP2.
