Spring Lawn Fertilizers are EVERYTHING when it comes to early-season lawn green up - Every spring for cool-season grass, It's a good idea to apply a spring lawn fertilizer to jump-start the lawn. However, one of the decisions we are faced with is "where should I source my product(s) from in 2022?"
Especially when we consider the fact that we also want a preventative effect on crabgrass. There are so many options out there. In this video, I break down my go-to for both a big box store and online retail setting based on products I have used with successful results. To top all this fun knowledge off, we also calculate Lbs/1000 of N with a liquid fertilizer product for those who are going the liquid route. Check it out! JTLK

My original plan this year and as of right now is to use/follow the Endure fertilizer plan. On Tuesday 4/7 I applied Endure Crabgrass Preventer Plus 19 0 3 with Dimension. Soil temp was just shy of 50 but I was trying to utilize the rain that was coming so it would get watered in. Yes the temps are up and down but I thought it was smart to get it in the ground with the projected future forecast. But, I feel I should really concentrate on soil health which is why I mentioned Humic and Sea K. As for sprayers I’m really leaning towards a good 4 gal battery powered backpack sprayer. I could water each app in with my big sprinkler after applying while reloading for the next square footage app.

For the last few years been using the N-ext Biostimulant products and still had some Carbon X DIY. ( been going low Nitrogen route) Last year for fertilizer found, at a landscape supply company, Lesco 10-0-20 with 10% iron. Unbelievable results with that increase in potassium & iron when combined with N-ext products. This year starting out with Green Pop then in 4 weeks the Lesco fert again an naturally using N-ext products. Thanks for all your advice. Really like " what's in the Jug" segments!

I started spoon feeding summer of last year! I noticed my lawn responded so much better than just pounding the lawn every 4-6weeks! I also got better results including green up and thickness without the crazy growth and having to mow every 4 days! I’m in the south with a st Augustine lawn!
@JakeTheLawnKid
@JakeTheLawnKid 2 года назад
You are correct. Especially with St. Augustine in sandy soil. Spoon feeding is better for sure. With clay on the other hand, you can get away with further spread out apps because of it's nutrient retention capabilities.

Hey jake. I threw down pre emergent green pop rsg n humic last week. I notice that I still have some lawn rust on my lawn from last season. You think I should throw down some flagship to push that rust out this month or should I wait for next month. Thank sir!

Put lawn to bed in December with Milorganite and Greenpunch. Just had first cut 10 days ago and greening up nice. I used the Scotts granular today. If you had to pick one would you also apply RGS, Microgreen, Humic12 or all of them? I'm going for fireworks this year. Thanks Jake!
@edhopkins6589

Seems like you are going to be well off with, Nitrogen, with slow release Milo 6-4-0 AND the GreenPunch 18-0-1. You have the Iron for green up kick. How about using the Micros? Without a soil test it is hard to say yes or no, but they are nutrients needed, albeit lower quantities. Best Wishes!

Jake, I built a new house and newly seeded it the fall of 2020. I use preemergent on it last year in spring of 2021. It seemed to struggle a lot in the hot summer temps and I’m assuming due to being fairly new grass not mature roots and what not that’s why it struggled. This spring I’m hammering it hard with starter fertilizer and other nitrogen fertilizers to really push it hard to thicken up and push roots to make it through the summer hopefully. Good strategy? I’m thinking maybe the preemergent last spring slowed down the maturation process on alot of my lawn? Curious your thoughts.
@edhopkins6589
@edhopkins6589 2 года назад
Hi Andy I am on same timeline as you, my lawn renovation Aug2020. You said you put some starter down this spring, they usually have good N-P-K ratios. N(up)- P(down growth, roots)- K( all around health). Remember, Nitrogen drives the bus, so that starter N will help with P, for roots, and you have the K, to help fight desease and or heat stress. I used Yard Mastery product of: 7-0-20 Stress blend. I was worried about the heat. Darn it! our July ( near Boston) was not to much heat, it was to much rain, 3x. It damaged lawn. I did 1st week September, dethatch/debrie rake out removal, and overseed with peat moss top dressing. I used a starter 15-15-15, and Green County product: liquid GreenPhite 0-0-31 at half rate ( due to K on the starter). My lawn just came out of winter with 3% damage, last year was about 15% snow mold damage. So for me having the extra K, I believe gave the grass plant better cell walls to withstand extreme cold. I will use again 3rd week June or based on heat, to prep lawn for the heat. Long story, I know, I just wanted to share. Check out: Yard Mastery and Greene County Next liquid fertilizers. Best Wishes!

Currently on a granular program now (55,000 sq ft) but hopefully I will be able to start to introduce some liquid to it this year, mainly Humic 12 and Sae-K. Soil test came back really low in Phosphorus and border line low/medium on my K. Your yard really popped with that .3lb of N/1000, looking good! As always, awesome vids and looking forward to this lawn season, if the temps would stop going up and down like a roller coaster lol. I’m experiencing the same weather as you, here in central OH. Take care

@@lonegoose2844 actually it's been proven repeatedly that on a larger property like that it's far less expensive to use liquids. IF irrigation is an issue, you work on timing with rain.

@@JakeTheLawnKid I’ve been SERIOUSLY considering going liquid as I’ve watched multiple videos on liquids and prices/1000 ft. My only issue is, and feel free to provide feedback, is what sprayer should I get AND exactly how fast do I need to water apps in after applying? And if I do the liquids am I right in my thought process of at least concentrating on applying the Humic 12 and Sea-K in hopes of simply improving my soil health?

I've been using Prodiamine 65 WD for the past few years as my pre-emergent SPRAY, and have had zero dandelions (my mortal enemy) consistently. I use Scott's Northern fertilizer, granular, and my area is about 60K sq. ft. That's 4 bags of 15K sq. ft. to cover. I would LOVE to get the same fertilizer results from a liquid, but can't seem to find a high-nitrogen liquid that would not cost me hundreds of dollars, for the same nitrogen coverage. How many gallons of liquid GreeneCharge would be needed to cover 60K sq. ft., to get to the .6lbs/sq. ft. coverage?
