In the first Episode of The Best Star Wars Character of All Time Series, I go over the "Bad Boy of Heroes", Han Solo. In this Han Solo Character Analysis, I talk about the qualities and events that make Han Solo such a special character.
I'm sure everyone has someone they picture as the Best Star Wars Character, and I know I have quite a few. My goal in this Star Wars Video Essay is to show how many great characters there are and why any one of them could be considered the greatest star wars character of all time.

I have my mixed feelings about his portrayal in the force awakens. At the end of the day, he's a grumpy old man who lost his son, his wife, his brother-in-law, and his home. He was forced to return to his old life of crime.

This channel is a hidden gem! One thing I do notice upon rewatching the OT, is Han Solo in ANH mostly speaks with 'I', 'me', 'my' etc, showing his more selfish nature. and he gradually says more other character's names as the films progress. Han Solo has always been my hero and the one character whose independence, spirit and you can say, solo-attitude I can truly relate to.

One of my favorite moments in A New Hope was when Luke got pulled under in the trash compactor room. If Han really only cared for himself, he would have probably tried to get out or get higher and away from where Luke was grabbed, but instead he started trying to find Luke and save him. He was even willing to listen to Leia's orders to try and help Luke

As a kid Luke was my favorite character from the OT because he had magic powers and the lightsaber- But rewatching the movies Han is easily my favorite character (still love Luke a lot too ofc, especially after s.2 of the Mandalorian). Han is practically oozing with charm, charisma, humanity and is, as you said, the best star wars character of all time as he is relatable.

The interesting thing about Han Solo is his story arc. The journey from Selfish to selfless can be seen in the original trilogy. But how did he become selfish in the first place. Well for that you have to look at the story before the original trilogy. Whether you are a fan of the legends version or the Disney version, one thing is certain. Han had a rough childhood. We don't see Han's parents any where. In the legends it is said he was abandoned. Most likely this is why he had to depend on himself for survival. In the Solo movie he is part of group of runaways who are at mercy of Lady Proxima. In the legends' version he is found by a man name Garris Shrike who was a pirate. He was forced to be part of his crew. He was treated very badly. Eventually Han freed himself from Shrike. Han's love interest before Leia was Bria Tharen and in the Disney version it's Qui'ra.. If we had a Han Solo Trilogy we would know how Han became the person we know in the original Trilogy.

Han is one of my favorite characters of all time, he embodies masculine values so well - especially with his character growth in the original trilogy. The natural leadership, confidence, devotion, and loyalty he shows by the end of ROTJ are truly the best version of himself. Not to mention young Harrison Ford being such a smokeshow LOL. I can't believe this video only has 19k views, it's so thoughtful and well-produced!

Didn't mention solo, where his arc is to not trust people because they'll abandon him. That movies addition in the timeline rewrites solo's arc as a man learning to trust despite past trauma and previous people completely shattering his trust. Because while he lost Beckett and Qi'ra leave him "Solo"... But despite this, he still gains new friends. Chewbacca and Lando. Hang is so focused on Beckett's betrayal and Qi'ra leaving him that in ESB he wants to leave Leia before she can leave him. That's why he insults her before he leaves, because he wants to hurt her before she does him. At the end of RotJ when Han asks if Leia loves Luke, he offers to leave. But he doesn't do it selfishly. He doesn't insult her or make a fuss. He does it because he believes him being gone is what would make them most happy. Then Leia reveals they're related and he realised that, even though some people come and go, there's always someone like Chewbacca who will stick by him. Also Han was never "Cool bad boy" he was also guy wayyy over his head don't @ me

Thank you for the video :-) But why didn't you include any scene from the sequels? Han saved his son's soul by sacrificing himself. An incredible closure for a man who used to be so self-centred. I think my favorite is Luke... Not at all "lonesome cowboy" but hotheaded and impulsive Dreamer and idealist Always putting his friends first Sees the best in people ("No one is ever truly gone") Family man (brings the family back together) Everybody trusts him Not proud despite all of his achievements Pure and chaste No delusion of attachment like his father Sometimes stumbling but then getting on his feet again, having learned his lesson Always wanting to know the truth Rather losing his life than his integrity Embodies the phrase "love thine enemy" Ending the war choosing peace, compassion and loyalty, not violence Taking responsibility for his faults Pacifism (e.g. ending the battle of Crait without spilling blood) Shouldering the burden of being the last Jedi Sometimes a dry humor and sense for the ridiculous Always in the first place himself, only in the second place a Jedi He does not save the world, kill the bad guy and get the girl His mission is compassion and idealism, not violence and seduction

It's a really good video, but I highly disagree that the theme of Star Wars is "good VS evil". I don't thini you're entirely wrong by saying this, however, I think I have something to add. I'm free to disagree with you and you're free to disagree with me without it being malicious, I'm just a huge SW fan and I've thought a lot about these things as you have as well and I want to give my perspective, from a construtctive place. On the surface it seems like the theme of SW is good Vs evil because the Episodes I-VI make use of elements found in the Hero's Journey (on the surface), however, I think it's a quite superficial way to look at the films, and I don't mean this as an insult. Family and Freedom are much, much more important and relevant themes throughout the six films. Imperialism, Technology and Industrialisation are other big themes as well. Family and freedom because that's the driving force behind the protagonists and other characters. Anakin longs for his and his mother's freedom, as well as a real family eventually (besides his mother, because he had to leave her behind and then falls in love, so and and so forth). He fails to find a new family in the Jedi and fails to gain his freedom, as he went from being a slave to Watto to being a slave to the Jedi, eventually becoming a slave to Palpatine who filled the family role the Jedi failed to fill. Besides Shmi, Padmé is the only real family Anakin has throughout his life, until his redepmtion through Luke. Obi-Wan can't be the older brother or father Anakin needs because he's too conformist and Qui-Gon dies too soon. Luke has his family on Tatooine but longs for the feeling of freedom, the feeling of freedom that comes from adventure, exploration, friendship, etc. After his aunt and uncle are killed he has nowhere left to go but with Ben, who fills the family role after Luke's family is murdered and, as we know, Ben eventually dies, so Luke's family eventually becomes his close friends and by extension the Rebel Alliance. Eventually Luke helps Vader redeem himself through Luke, which finally reunites Anakin with his family, albeit only a part of it intially. The part where Imperialism, Technology and Industrialisation come in is the struggle between the big the two main factions we see in each trilogy and how that is reflective of the Force. The Republic on the surface is a faction in tune with the warm and nurturing Nature, while the Seperatists (CIS - Confederacy of Independent Systems) are supposed to represent the cold, apathetic and destructive side of Technology and Industrialisation. We eventually realise that the Republic is in fact as much if not even worse than the CIS. The people of the CIS chose to seperate from an increasingly expansionist, imperialist, oppressive "Republic" secretly controlled by the Sith and the Sith's minions who were in control of the CIS. In Episode I the Trade Federation are a part of the Republic and have a seat in the Senate and in Episode II when Obi-Wan follows Jango and the Republic goes to rescue Obi-Wan, Padmé and Anakin in Geonosis they are in fact the aggressors, even if on a rescue mission or whatever other justifications they use. Geonosis didn't attack of invade the Republic so Geonosis and, by extension, the CIS in this case has a right to defend itself from the invading GAR (Grand Army Of The Republic). The people of the systems who are part of the CIS are the victims of the Republic who just haven't realised that the CIS is controlled by the same people who control Republic. The Republic is in fact the cold, uncaring and apathetic force (no pun intended) while the CIS is just a sympthom of it. They ARE the same system. Episode II makes an effort of showing us that Geonosis was being transfromed into a big factory for the Separatists and the different industries that were backing the CIS, which were the different people responsible for different indsutries that made up the Seperatist Council AKA the military-industrial complex. At the end of Episode II we see how Coruscant is becoming increasingly militarised. Kamino is a world that is responsible for breeding an army of slaves. One of the ironies here is that while the army of "the bad guys" is composed of droids who feel no pain or have no soul, the army of "the good guys" is composed of slaves, of people who were bred from birth to be nothing more than cannon fodder, while the Jedi by the PT have become so arrogant and apathetic that they'll let burocrats prolongue suffering in the galaxy and at the same time the Jedi will "lead", with few qualms, a slave army. The Republic, which eventually becomes the Galactic Empire, by its nature is expansionist and imperialist, treats its citizens like servants and its army like expendable commodities. The Rebel Alliance is the faction which in fact represents Nature. They're composed of people from different planets, systems, species who speak multiple languages, from all walks of life. A great representation of how they're in tune with nature is their outfits, especially combat outfits, composed of colours you see a lot in nature like tan, blue, green, brown and sometimes white. Han's outfits go from black and white at the same time (morally grey) to increasingly more "natural" with blues, tans, browns and greens. By Episode V he's in tune with nature and in a certain way the Light Side, and like you said, he's in tune with his heart and his true nature as an empathetic and selfless hero. I have to stop using the word "nature" so much. He's in fact much more of a jedi than a lot of the jedi we see in the PT, but that's another discussion. And I don't think Han's "bad because he's selfish" at the beginning of IV, he has good reason to be selfish, and I'm not saying you think that, but it's something that I've seen a lot of fans online say because they think "Han goes from bad to good", which is not the case. He was never a bad person, he didn't harm others unless he had to for self defense or defense of others. A detail a lot of people seem to forget about is that the reason Han initially doesn't participate in the battle on the surface the the Death Star I isn't because he "doesn't want to", it's because he has to pay off Jabba's debt. Greedo tried to kill Han because of the debt earlier in the film and since people really forget the reason he doesn't participate in the battle right away, they even included the scene on the hangar with Jabba from 1997 onwards. But yes, obviously it's not just because of the debt he doesn't participate in the battle, there's other factors you mentioned. The Empire is black and white (and grey, but that's just a reflection of the nazi outfits from WW2) visually and morally, this one I don't think I have to explain at all. And the reason I'm only talking about the PT and OT is because the ST doesn't fit in with the previous films' themes, leads to nowhere, nothing evolves and at the end of Episode IX they're at the same place they were at the end of VI, so really the characters and the story is back where it was at the end of the OT. There's no progression at all. I wanted to bring this discussion as I think it's a great topic concerning Star Wars as a franchise and its characters. Anakin is a character that is very morally grey throughout both trilogies, as is Han at the beginning of IV, and Luke in V and especially VI. Dooku is a perfect example of a morally grey character as well, having seen how deeply evil the Republic is but eventually becoming part of a faction that is just as corrupt as the Republic. Padmé is a good natured person who unfortunately is a tool in the Sith grand plan and only realises what the Republic has become when it's too late and is married to Sidious' personal enforcer (or Sidious' son, that's a whole other can of worms). While morality is a huge part of SW, I don't think that the simplistic point of view of "good VS evil" is at all the real theme of SW. That part I think is just the top coating and something for the 12 year olds in the audience, and that's not a bad thing at all, I just think SW is much, much more complex than that. Anyways, this is the first video of your channel I watched and I'll watch the rest, new subscriber!
