Some notes! - The Alldocube tablet also works in vertical/TATE mode, great for SHMUPs. The Switch is sadly too narrow for TATE mode with this controller. - Sounds like I need to check out the Mobapad M6 HD for my Switch, thanks everyone for the recommendations! - Turns out the ABXY buttons on the G8 Galileo do NOT swap, that's only on the G8 Plus.
Would you wish to have that second joystick at the top ? I don't know for you, but I have symmetrical hands and prefer to have the D-Pad and Action Buttons in the same row. And have the joysticks in the same row. It is why the SteamDeck layout is so ergonomic, as opposed to the NSwitch with its "goofy" layout. The WiiU Pro controller did it best, in my opinion.
Good choice, the Mobapad M6 is hands down my favorite Joycon! Every single button is a mouse keyswitch (I think?), which gives it a very precise feel. Same with their Mobapad controller that’s just the Joycons attached together, that’s my fav Switch controller. Hope you like them too when you try them out!
You can change where the hair trigger actually triggers with the android app. I like to have mine about 50% of the way down. So by the time the trigger "clicks" with the controller, the input triggers. Did it with my G7 HE as well.
@@justsomebody-1665 You can't change to PS symbols, just move the letters like he showed. But you can change to the exact colors of the PS buttons, which is nice.
You are the only YTer that can make half hour videos and not only do I watch them, I get excited! So many other great creators out there, but none of them can hold my attention like you. Russ, I seriously recommend you branch out. You have what it takes. You could review games, laptops, tech, compete with MKBHD.
Hey Russ great video! Have you heard of the Mobapad M6 HD joycons? Would be curious to see a review of that and a comparison to the GameSir because they seem to be the best joycon replacement, as far as actual separable joycons vs. a bluetooth controller like this
I'd love for him to review them, he goes into detail that some other videos lack. The Mobapads look perfect but the reviews I've watched seem a little too "hype". It's interesting there are some similar features between the Mobapads and this one. I'd prefer controllers on the joycon rails and the Gamesir puts way too much bulk on the back. But then again, I could use the Gamesir with my phone and that adds value. Would be great to see a comparison.
I have both the G8+ and the mobapad m6 HD. I keep the G8+ with my phone/ipad and use the mobapad for the switch. Comparison-wise, I think the digital triggers are a better fit for the switch, and the d-pad I also feel is better overall. It's also clicky but the click is much more subtle and takes less force. Finally, you can dock it without taking off the controllers. I find the G8+ d-pad to be precise but it's overall more fatiguing to use and the click is louder than necessary. It's not as good as superior non-clicky d-pads like on 8bitdo controllers.
I think the Mobapad is the better option if you only want a switch controller, the G8 will be better if you want a more complete device to also to use it with your PC or streaming on the phone.
I just scanned through your video. I’m about to buy this controller. It’s on sale today. But I also saw that you can use this on your PC as well. This controller is the most amazing all in one controller I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you for the tip! I’m returning the back bone that I just got two days ago as of today. And because of the sale it's also cheaper than the backbone that I got.
I am with you. I ran a hardcore/emo record label and distro in the 90s and that album sold a lot for us. Love seeing these band shirts appear each video. Brings me back.
I think what's crazy about this controller is that it covers basically all the bases (android, iOS, switch, PC) while being great in all of them. I have the original G8 modded to fit tablets and it's great but the added rumble on the G8 Plus and the fact that you don't need to remove the phone case since it's Bluetooth makes me want to get one too. Also if you have both you can put the Galileo's grey plates on the Plus and it will look really nice with the black buttons.
The only downside I've had with the G8 plus is that the right stick is a tad too close to the face buttons, leading to some accidental bumps when using a stick grip. I kinda prefer the BSP D8 pro's more spread out layout but with the responsiveness and accuracy of the G8 plus.
Had no intention of getting another controller for my phone or Switch...but watching your video (and seeing it was on sale today at Prime) I ended up grabbing it. Thanks for the great videos!
Whilst I love that the A and B buttons can be swapped, I think the icing on the cake would be if you could also further arrange three buttons along a,b,c as so, akin to a Mega Drive pad. Maybe another skin/cover that allows you to do that? I think there should be more moduler controller pads, because each system of games has different styles of pads. Playstation 2 for example, has pressure sensitive buttons. But those kinds of mushyness may not be good for other games. Sone arcade games had a track ball.
Yeah, I really don't like the asymmetrical format. Especially for one of my favorite Vita rhythm games Superbeat Xonic on Switch it feels so janky to have the analog sticks in different places.
Honestly since the controller is so ergonomic it doesn't feel bad at all the dpad on the bottom as opposed with most handhelds that are usually slimmer/smaller so when using it at the bottom feels compromised.
Watched the nerd nest yesterday and Russ I really hope your region block on jp becomes active asap. Don't wanna lose my favourite retro reviewer ❤️. Edit: would love a tarantula controller review.
This is pretty cool. I absolutely love the easy button swap option. I think this kind of set up would fit well in any of Hori pro cases. A bit bulky, but a good way to keep it all together
Really great seeing you cover the GameStop rebrand. Your perspective on these controllers weighs heavily so it’s really nice to see something like that accessible with trade-in credit. I’d love to see your perspective on the ModRetro handheld as well. Management has changed drastically at GameStop in the last few years, so a collab would be awesome. I use the CandyCon controller and I think the faceplates are real cool.
One cool thing you didn’t touch on is that, because it is a Bluetooth controller, you can remove it from your Switch, dock the Switch, and keep on playing with the Switch in dock mode on the TV.
This is really cool. One reason I haven't bought a phone controller is because I think the USB-C connection makes the controller not flexible and not future-proof - so easy for something to not line up right due to the device or the case on the device. Besides, the battery on my phone drains fast enough as is. This new controller seems right up my alley.
Thank you for your views on this controller! I needed a new controller after switching from an iphone 12 Pro Max to a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra very recently. I passed my Razer Kishi to my son and was happy to find out about the Gamesir G8 Plus. I ordered one after finding a deal for $51.00 last week and it should be here within a day or 2. I can't wait to try it!
I actually just got it yesterday, and lemme tell ya - it will fit any phone. I have my S23 Ultra in a very thick Mous case, and it fits very comfortably. With my setup, I also have a Cable Matters angled USB-C connector that sits snugly between the case and the controller without any visible strain on the USB-C port, solving the issue of not being able to charge the phone while gaming. It also allows me to connect the controller to the phone via a cable for lower latency. So far I played mostly on Switch, and i am pretty pleased with it as a replacement for the joycons.
This is perfect! With the way Nintendo bullies my favorite small creators, I was looking for a way to buy a controller for the switch without giving Nintendo any more money.
Honestly once you showed the interchangeable buttons you sold me on the controller, now this is a must for me, I can just switch from my phone to switch with ease
Gamesir has easily become my favorite controller manufacturer. Their top-end controllers are great, but even their cheaper offerings like the Gamesir Nova Lite excel in quality! I hope they make a more "compact" G8 Pro, similar in shape to their X2 Pro. It just makes my phone look more like a handheld console rather than a phone with a controller slapped onto it. It's also more portable!
I just made some coffee. How did you know? I was looking at this controller for my phone a while ago. The fact you can use it with the Switch is impressive, I'm very temped to buy this now.
I literally ordered this G8+ controller after watching your old Gallileo G8 video 40 mins ago and you post this immediately after lol. Looking forward to it, I had the Gamesir X2 and it was absolutely terrible. It was small, cramped and uncomfortable in terms of ergonomics, and the analog stick, and the buttons are tiny and blocked by the right analog stick.
I got the GameSir G8+ last month for using with my phone and I love it with no real noticeable lag as it's Bluetooth 5.3 and my phone is Bluetooth 5.3 as well. The fact I can use it with the Switch is a nice bonus but I still like my Nyxi Hyperion joycons with my Switch better but only just. Keep up the great work with the channel Russ 👏
Just got it a few days ago, on sale. Played Resident evil 4 iOS on iPhone 16 pro and it is a quite amazing experience. I’m particularly impressed by the vibration
I just received this controller and it makes my switch oled feel like a brand new device , super precise for fps games on switch . Grid autosport supports analog trigger mode with this if you change it to GameCube controller mode in the game settings .
People on Amazon are complaining because the usb C on the galileo moves. They fail to understand that's a feature for phones because the thickness of phones is not consistent and this allows for extreme compatibility.
i got g8+ for $50 and i love it overall, crazy price value since i can use it as phone, switch and pc controller. now this is my main controller for everything.
The gamesir T3S is my favorite pc controller. I love the playstation stick layout. That tarantula might just be might next new fave. Wouldn't mind seeing a full video on it.
That button switch thing on the Tarantula seems a little gimmicky but it is really cool. Hopefully the moving parts in there will hold up. Great video, looking forward to the next one!
I got the D8 telescopic controller on AliExpress for about $23 a while back after an ETA Prime video and this looks like a more premium version of that. I like the versatility of Bluetooth on these since if I go on a trip with my laptop, phone, and Switch then I could use these controllers for all 3 if I am tight on space. The D8 also has hall effect joysticks and feels much better than joycons, but I will certainly keep this in mind for an upgrade if I want one later!
I actually bought this a few weeks ago with the intention of only using it with my phone, and it does work great for emulators. But after trying to emulate Switch on my S23 and having it thermal throttle on me as well as seeing the current demise of Switch emulation I ended up getting a Switch OLED this past weekend. Although the games are expensive they are usually long or very replayable so I'm happy with my purchase and the fact I already had this controller makes it even better. I do love the buttons and how light the joycons are, but I never had a handheld before simply because they hurt my hand, so the G8 Plus was a great buy as well.
I wanted to point out 2 things that weren't mentioned in the video: - The regular G8 is still the ideal option for phones with a type-c port because it allows to charge the phone while playing, for uninterrupted long sessions - the G8+ is compatible with ALL tablets, not only smaller ones. This is because Gamesir made it very easy to overstretch it beyond its regular limits
My daughter uses this to play switch in the car while I drive and then I take it back to play on my phone when we arrive somewhere lol it has everything we need. Then I connect it via USB c at home to play docked mode. It has everything you need. Side note, to swap between devices you don't click the chicken button, instead you press the dot (menu) button on the very bottom left and then press the corresponding button for that device. For example dot button + Y = Switch etc.
I can confirm. I've had a Gamesir controller on my cell phone for a couple of years now and it's been absolutely incredible. It's a bit on the pricey side, but this is one of those times when you definitely pay for quality.
Neat that the Tarantula Pro uses the Xbox Elite controller analog trigger mechanism, or something similar. Being able to swap L2/R2 actuation points is kind of a game changer.
This looks solid but two small cons from my end: 1. It's actually a significant extra step to remember to separately charge a grip peripheral. Personally, I'd forget all the time. 2. A minor miss, but I think GameSir could've put this over the top if they'd made the starting length small enough (4in. instead of 4.72) to fit a switch vertically. That would've made this, hands down, the easiest solution on the market for playing games (e.g. shmups) in tate mode.
Great review. Just to add, the thumbsticks and accent rings can be replaced with Xbox Elite controller sticks and rings that can be found on Amazon for even more customization options. The same applies to the original G8, which I assume includes its licensed variants. I recommend recalibrating the sticks if they're replaced, which is easy enough to do and is covered in the manual. I also fully agree with sticking the mechanical trigger option from the Tarantula Pro on a G8++, hopefully sometime in the not-too-distant future.
The G8 Gallileo is the best phone controller I've ever used. It's nice to see there is a BT version, although I much prefer the physical connection for its zero lag.
This does look nice. Maybe it will be my upgrade when the Switch 2 comes out. I would love to see a video on that controller and how it does when switching between PC, different emulators, and different consoles!
I've had the G8 Plus for a while. It's absolutely excellent, and built way better than I expected. My only con is not being able to charge my phone while playing, but that's why it's flexible, so it's a trade off. It's flawless otherwise.
