This video demonstrates the process of up-potting and transplanting a fig tree into a larger container. The importance of using large containers (minimum of three-gallon size) is highlighted for successful fig tree growth. Next, the discussion transitions to the type of soil to use, emphasizing the need for well-draining soil and creating air pockets in the soil for healthy root growth. Tips are given on mixing soil ingredients, which include vermiculite, perlite, bark, shredded bark, and rice hulls.
For more information on the repotting process, check out the companion guide to this video, here: www.figboss.com/post/the-best...
The actual up-potting process starts with positioning the tree in the new container and considering burying a portion of the trunk to stimulate root growth. The significance of packing the soil firmly around the root ball to avoid air pockets is underscored. After planting, a half cup of a slow-release fertilizer mix, including balanced NPK and micronutrients, is added. Some of the recommended micronutrients include vermiculite, oyster shells, green sand, rock dust, gypsum, or lime, as fig trees benefit specifically from these.
Finally, adding mulch to the potted fig tree is recommended to help with transplant shock, regulate soil temperature, and improve soil life. After the up-potting process is complete, it's suggested to tag the pot for identification.
Introduction (00:00):
The discussion begins by emphasizing the importance of using larger containers for growing fig trees, mentioning a three, five, or seven-gallon pot as a minimum requirement for successful growth.
Up-potting Importance (00:33):
Further emphasis is placed on the benefits of larger containers, which provide the tree with more space to grow, better access to water and nutrients, and lead to potentially larger fruit production.
Soil Advice (01:33):
The discussion shifts to soil types, with emphasis on using well-draining soil mixes to support the fibrous roots of the fig tree. Tips on creating air pockets in the soil for better root health are given.
Soil Mix Ingredients (02:07):
Specific ingredients for a well-draining soil mix are suggested, including vermiculite, perlite, bark, shredded bark, and rice hulls.
Potting Process (03:16):
The process of up-potting the fig tree into the new container begins, with explanation on how to correctly position the tree in the container, and the optional practice of burying a portion of the trunk to encourage root growth.
Soil Packing (03:49):
Emphasis is placed on the importance of packing the soil firmly around the root ball to avoid air pockets, which could hinder tree health and growth.
Adding Nutrients (04:24):
The process continues with the addition of a half cup of slow-release fertilizer mix, including well-balanced NPK and micronutrients.
Nutrient Details (04:52):
The nutrient mix is discussed in more detail, highlighting the use of vermiculite, oyster shells, green sand, rock dust, gypsum, or lime as they provide micronutrients that fig trees particularly benefit from.
Adding Mulch (06:01):
The final step in the up-potting process is adding mulch, which helps with transplant shock, regulates soil temperature, and improves soil life.
Tagging (06:34):
The process concludes with the tagging of the pot for identification, ensuring successful tracking and care for the transplanted tree in the future.

THANK YOU for the video and ALSO for putting all of the important steps in your description! I took thorough notes not knowing you had them already written down, I appreciate that :) I have a fig cutting that is not rooting, I am going to repot, and see if it does better. I did not know you had to pack down the soil around it so well. Happy growing :)

Could the fig tree go directly from the 4x9 tree pot to the ground? I live in Texas wondering if I could skip a few transplants.

Good work,very informative,have grown many figs black Turkey brown Lebanese,Libyan ,Iranian&native naturally occurring in Islamabad near Himalayan’s foothills.Or you using earth or organic cow filling your pot .I use earth cow dung ,bones iron nails &ash ,are growing well now this year August &September are very hot months ,day’s temperatures running to above 40oC &water them three times a day as their being kept on roof top .As this year it’s very hot &occasional showers&increased humidity ,the leaves are attacked by fungus white thread like webs inside a larvae &curling &drying some are becoming yellow with iron like soy on them.

Hey coming from a bonsai world have you ever added pumice or lava rock into the soil mix? They both provide aeration and promote drainage. Im just starting with figs and was curious Thanks
@okami3186
@okami3186 Год назад
You can. But that would be wasteful and unecessary as the other ingredients already provide enough for the plant.

I started a fig cutting from a neighbor in June. It is thriving in a small 10" pot. Should I transplant it into a larger pot for the winter or just winter it in the current pot? I haven't decided if I should plant it in the soil next Spring or continue using a container. My neighbor's fig tree was her Italian fathers and he started it 50+ years ago. It was always in the ground. Thank you!

I find those black landscape planter pots get very hot if in full sun. Ive started using white 5 gallon food grade buckets instead. Its not pretty But when you mentioned plants shutting down when the soil gets too hot i thought this would be a better solution Especially if you are doing airlayers.
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi Год назад
In this area you need the black pots to warm up the soil in the spring. Even if they slow down in the summer, that's also what we want so that they prepare properly for the winter. In much warmer places, I'd recommend a different color.

For a relatively mature tree how often do you need to repot it or replace the soil? I guess there's a limit to how many times you can repot into a bigger pot so would you cut back the roots on a rootbound plant? By how much?
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi Год назад
Root pruning is usually performed every 1-3 years by removing a third of the root mass.

@@RossRaddi Thanks for the tip. I guess it's a bigger job to repot than to plant in the first place because you have to prune it and remove all the soil. Not something I'm looking forward to 7 stories up. More fun carrying up new soil than carrying down the old. And many of my plants are overdue... You just confirmed that I have a big project ahead.

I noticed you didn't mention bone meal. I use that on alot of plants.
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi Год назад
I've found that fertilizer is not an overly important topic. As long as you're using something and being consistent with your fertilizer, that's my recommendation. However, Bone meal is missing key nutrients. Micro and macro, so it should be used in conjunction with other fertilizers. Lastly, the high amount of phosphorus bone meal contains is unnecessary. Most soils and well balanced fertilizers contain plenty of phosphorus.

This year my 2-3 yo trees in 7 gal pots started looking really sad and dropped fruit.. i broke down and pulled them out to find that its a bit root bound. Idk how you're able to keep yours healthy for so long
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi Год назад
They get root bound quick. Eventually they have to be root pruned or moved to another size.

Hi! Newer fig grower here. I have 5 trees that haven't produced fruit yet (only 2 years old). I would like to uppot them but I was wondering if up potting effects fruit development that season? I don't want to uppot yet if I won't get as much fruit as I would've. TIA!
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi 6 месяцев назад
Negatively, if you damage the roots. Fruit formation is easy if the tree is healthy combined with good sunlight hitting the branches as they grow. Limit pruning to thinning cuts.
