In this video, my friend and I discuss what we think are the two best affordable leather tote bags. Both have good warranties and are quality bags. I think my WP tote is a good alternative to Saddleback Leather, and my friend's is made by Love41 which is Saddleback's sister company.

Just if you are interested, those printed numbers on the inside of the bag are from the tannery the leather came from. They are used to show the size of the hide in square feet. Leather is priced by the square foot, so the numbers are there for pricing.

Thanks so much for doing a review of both of these bags. I've been researching to buy a leather tote for my wife, and your videos have been very helpful! In fact, your mention of the strap addition to your Whipping Post tote, and that Koch Leather makes totes with a strap, led me to purchase the Brown Horween Tote from Koch Leather. Plus, it doesn't hurt that you're an ex-Michigander like myself. :-) Kudos and keep up the great reviews.

Loved your video. I would certainly be interested in trying the Whipping Post tote. I have seen it around and have liked the look for quite awhile. The only thing I like better about the Love41 is the smooth interior. For the last two years I have been carrying a Chic Sparrow Rustic Tote. The dimensions from the website are, “The Rustic Tote measures 18” x 12” x 5”, with a 10.75” drop. Bag weight is approximately 2 lbs empty.” Mine has two interior pockets. I took it to a local shoemaker and had a zipper added across the top as a secure closure. I got mine for $165.00, although the price has increased since then. Thanks again. Great information!

I love you video thank you so much! This was very informative. I’ve been researching leather totes for the past 6 months and feel like my brain is going to explode. The world of leather totes is seriously endless. I was wondering if you had any thoughts of the fashionABLE Mamuye tote and the Portland leather tote? I’ve also heard great things about the Nisolo Lori oak tote? If you have any other advice on tote brands I would be sooooo appreciative!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Loved watching this! I don't have either of these bags but my Gillie Leather tote is very similar to the Whipping Post bag. Gillie Leather adds a leather strap with a key ring on all of his totes. I could not live without that. Total pro! He can also add a leather strap closure like you added. His interior pocket has three compartments. He is a small but growing leather maker in Ohio and makes everything himself; I guess that is how it can all be customized. You can also request the strap length you want, really anything you want, he will do. And I am pretty sure he will guarantee it for life. I know this has nothing to do with your review of your two bags, I just love my bag so much I just had to share. Both of your bags are gorgeous! Looking forward to watching your other reviews! ❤️

Hi Danae, I love this video for its detail and your comparison with Annie's Love41 simple tote, the two of you work really well together. I bought the Whipping Post vintage tote back in April 2015 in the same colour as yours and I use mine a lot! Just recently she came into hospital with me and carried all my stuff easily, but day to day I also use pouches. I recently went to NYC (I live in the UK) and seriously considered taking my Whipping Post tote as my carry on but due to the open top I chose not to and carried my old Mulberry Bayswater instead. I love the battle scars on your bag and the whole story behind it.

Danae, I can't thank you enough for doing this video. I think I have watched it 5 or 6 times. It's fun to read all the comments, and which bags people chose... I must say the Whipping Post tote more closely meets my requirements....I like the look of the leather...slightly shiny...not matte, yet still shows some patina and wear. I also like a flat and sturdy bottom ... and it has an inside pocket. As you said, the only thing it's missing is a closure. I am hoping to purchase one and add the strap...Fingers crossed that I find a good leather worker! Anyway, thank you again, for sharing all of the information! If you do ever decide to part with that bag...let me know... I have a bit of anxiety,, and the fact that the bag is already "well loved" takes the pressure off!!!! Thanks for a really great video!

Breaking in a bag can be fun, just live your life and the leather will slowly get softer and comfortable to carry. I don't know if I'll part with it. Check out ebay for some used options? I just purchased my very first Love41 Tote...the Pocket Tote...in Tobbaco! I am OBSESSED with the patina going on with your Simple Tote!!! So encouraging! Also, I'm ordering the Big Wallet from Saddleback soon! I ordered the adorable cute little Bifold Wallet from Love41...but it is just that...little. I am a super organized lady and NEED pockets and space etc.! I went from buying Michael Kors, Kate Spade and many other name brands to somehow finding this brand and I'm sure I will never go back! I purchase bags every few months! I'm already super excited for my next purchase! My vote is for the Simple Tote! Honestly I feel like they are two different bags...I like the not so stiff base and the color of the Simple Tote! Maybe it would be closer if the Whipping Post Tote were a different color? I also love the size of the Simple compared to the other! :)

Absolutely great video! Thank you for your time and Annie's time- loved the up close comparisons and contrasts. If I could morph those two bags into one I would. Whipping Post had a killer base and pocket, but I love the look of the Love 41 tote. I have the Love 41 Simple Tote and got it around a year ago. It’s my everyday gym bag. I take it to work filled with my gym clothes, shoes, earbuds, toiletries and a workout towel. I change at work in our locker room and this bag fits just perfectly in my locker. My work clothes fit in there just perfectly too. I use it as a travel bag when I visit family out of state. It’s so sturdy and the straps are just long enough to go over shoulder with room for the rest of your arm and not feel cramped. Some totes the straps are too short and you feel cramped while you’re carrying it but this seems the right length for my body frame. I have it in tobacco and I get so many compliments from coworkers. It’s aging beautifully and I have no need for any other totes. It does not fit my purse though, so I carry that separately. I have the SBL Tablet bag that is my every day purse and the tri-fold SBL wallet fits in there great too. I highly recommend their products. Suzette has a new tote out recently that has exterior pockets that can address the lack of pocket issue with this simple tote. I’ll see if ya’ll have already reviewed it. Great video.

I have the L41 Simple Tote in tobacco, too. I bought it about a year ago (I use it often, but not for daily usage). My strap drop is 13" and it was NOT a Suzette's Steal bag. :)

thank you! I think the strap length varies how long you have it. But I haven't heard if it every stretches longer than 13". Hopefully more people post their lengths of their tote straps.

Do you use anything (conditioner) on your bag? I know saddleback leather recommends to condition ever year or so depending on how often it gets wet but I see that Annie said in the video she’s never conditioned hers. I’d rather not use anything on my bag cause I don’t want to ruin the natural patina it will develop. Just curious how you are caring for your bag and how it’s holding up. 😊😊😊

Hi Danae! Thank you for this review, it's very informative. I also own a Whipping Post Vintage Tote Bag. Before I purchased it, I e-mailed the company to ask if the bag was made of full-grain leather. They replied only to say that it was 100 % vegetable tanned. I already knew that because it said so in their description of the bag. I still wonder if it's full-grain, and how can I tell if it is? Thanks in advance! Keep reviewing for us leather bag lovers!

Just wanted to let you know that the video Jim did on the difference between the two leathers doesn’t cover the chromexcel leather. He covers regular chrome tanned leather which is not nearly as good as chromexcel. He replied to a comment in regards to that. Chromexcel is way better than chrome tanned leather. Just in case anyone else is or was confused when they watched his video. 😊👍🏼

Hello! I love my black WP tote. I find myself grabbing it more than my brown one. But that brown one has way more memories tied to it if you know what I mean. The black one works better for business settings I believe. I'm not sure when I'll post a video on it. Maybe another tote comparison video because I have more totes currently. The leather strap was from scrapes at saddleback leather (they sell scrapes by the box sometimes), the othe hardware was purchased by the leather makers that put the strap on. Most leather makers would help with this.

waldfrauke yes the straps do stay on my shoulder. One side is finished leather the other side is raw, rough, textured leather so it doesn't slide off. great question!

On the Whipping Post tote, is the reinforced base made of one thick piece of leather or is there plastic or something underneath the leather to give it structure?

The base is a hard structured wrapped in leather. I dont know what's inside the structure because it's all secured to the base and doesn't come out. I have two totes now from Whipping Post, and the bases are doing great after much use.

Patty R I got the vintage tote. My particular color has been discontinued, at the time I bought it was the vintage tote, but now that color is a but warmer. Chestnut would be too dark and red, I believe. I have some pouches in the new vintage/tan leather, and its lovely!! See unboxing video on my channel for a look at the pouches. Thanks!!

I haven't treated my Whipping Post Tote, and Annie hasn't treated her Love41 Tote with any waterproofing finish. Both of our bags do well in the rain because we are fine with our leather aging in a natural way (getting softer, more wrinkles, more patina). If you ever feel your leather is tried out, I recommend Chamberlains Conditioner. I don't have a recommendation for waterproofing because I like my leather to look older over time. If anyone has a recommendation for KK, please reply below!

ThePerfectLeatherBag Ok. Thank you so much for responding ! 🤗 I just got a new bag from madewell and freaking out as I got a few drops of water on it the other day. It was ugly. But I took a breath...took a slightly damp cloth and moistened the entire front of my bag and it went back to its orig color! Lol. I'm new to the whole veg tanned leather bag thing....so wasn't sure if this was considered patina or whatever. Thanks again for the response! Love the bags and your vids!👍🏻❤

Great job! That is a great job wetting the whole front side. that's what I would do too if a rain drop did show up. I should mention that the two totes mentioned in this video do not show rain drops. I'm sorry to hear your madewell bag did. Some of my bags are more likely to have raindrops. If it's a very raining day, I switch out to a different bag instead of risking it. so great job! which one did you get?

Whipping Post is a great company, but is not set up like Love41 with profits going to charities. I like both kinds of companies but I prefer high quality paired with great function more. I value giving to charities near and far personally anyways. Great question though!

I just got in my brand new Whipping Post tote and am astonished at how bad it smells to me. It smells not of warm, brown leather but of glue! Please tell me someone out there has had the same experience with these bags and if it will go away!

Oh no!!! I'm sorry to hear this. I've had two bags from Whipping Post and neither of them smelled like glue. Glue is a process of making a bag, along with rivets and stitching. I would email Whipping Post and tell them your first impressions. Then, wait a week and air out the bag (don't keep it in the packaging). I've had bags from other companies that have had a strong smell, and after airing them out for a week or so, they smelled like leather. Respect Whipping Post's return policy, and keep their customer service in the loop. if it doesn't air out, I'd return it or exchange it for another bag. I have heard the bags are made and sealed in the bags right away. meaning the glue never got to air out. Maybe that was the case this time. Good Luck! Let me know what you do!!

ThePerfectLeatherBag Thanks for the advice! I did email their customer service right away for advice but never heard back. I have let the bag air outside for a day and already it smells better. It still smells strong but not as glue-y as it did. I certainly want to keep the bag because I already am in love with it! I got the Vintage Tote in Tan and it’s just amazing. Thanks for the tips. I’ll just keep airing it out and with use it should be ok. I just couldn’t help freaking out right away when I smelled it at first! 😅

My camera is very annoying and will focus on a face instead of the closest object. So if I block my face, it will focus on the object. I believe I can turn this setting off, but 80% of the time I do want my face in focus. Thanks for watching!
