The best touring vehicle? Pros and Cons? Why we chose a Prado & hybrid offroad van to tour Australia 

Choosing a “rig” is very personal but most people over specify and end up with stuff they don’t need and/or use.. My wife and I are over 70 and have been camping since our early 20s. When designing our current camper trailer, we had a few “deal breakers”. A loo, room to do yoga and a comfortable bed were my wife’s priorities. Mine was to keep the weight of the trailer as low as possible. We bought our camper trailer tent from Queensland and had our trailer built in Perth and the manufacturer bolted the tent onto the trailer. The tent has an en-suite which zips and Velcro’s to the side into which we put a portable loo. We carry enough water for a minimum of 3 days, an inflatable double kayak plus everything needed to set up camp, in the trailer. Our car (Toyota Kluger AWD) carries our clothes, fridge and kitchen (in a rack system I built). All up the trailer weighs just over 400 kgm fully loaded and we’ve kept the GVM well below limits. The all up cost was less than the first year’s depreciation on most new caravans. We have covered over 80,000 kms around Australia in the last 6 or 7 years - so it has stood the test of time. Set up and take down times are a bit longer than for a caravan but we pick that time up on the road (safely). And, of course, fuel consumption is not much more than without the trailer and on road performance just as good. It’s not for everyone, but we love it.

Great Video guys and definitely agree a Prado / Hybrid Van combo is a great setup for touring Oz - gets you anywhere in relative comfort. I`ve had 2 Prados and love them, but had to upgrade to a 21 Hilux (Rugged X) to tow our new 13ft Hybrid Van with an ATM at 2700kg. I know the 21 Prados have a BTC of 3000kg, but we went with the Hilux for a bit more versatility with the Tub, and are loving it so far, and setting it up to Tour Oz right now - cheers

Hi Keelan, the Prado is a very good size 4wd, but for me i need the 3-5 tonne towing and the 6-8 gcm, thats why i have a 79 single cab

Love my 2010 150 3ltr 💪🏻 we tow a Jayco swan. Around town we are getting about 9ltrs per 100kms, towing the swan we get around 12ltr per 100km, great comfort and economy. Great review guys, another mid week vid is sweet too 👌🏻

No really it was a great wagon Your right about Toyota parts availability out bush, you only see Toyota’s on stations 10hrs from town (maybe the odd pootrol) Stick to standard tyre sizes also Another great episode team, looks like your having a ball👍

Awesome episode and Great breakdown of the Prado! One thing about my 2012 Prado is how effortlessly capable it is off-road when towing our 1.8t camper 👍 definitely a great platform for remote touring and there are plans already in the making 👍

Toyota 4WD’s are like Thai restaurants. Some are better than others but none are bad. I have a Prado 150 and am very happy with it.

Just watched your video, great information. just a side note as i have a 2011 Prado similar to your mods i added an I drive which is basically plug and play, if you did the same im sure you will love the response it gives you especially when towing. it will just allow you to tap in or access the power when needed. You should check them out..

Great vid guys, I've been watching for a while now and must say the format is getting better 👏. We use our 2012 150 for touring as we tow a 18' poptop. Prado is fairly modded (incl. remap), so has a good amount of power but that bl**dy GVM/GCM is killing me 😬

Top video again I still own is my daily work drive Vechile older Toyota Prado V6 3.4 litre petrol model 2001 model still going strong am definitely going with the safari snorkel v spec with my other vehicle ( isn’t a Toyota one )that’s going to tow my camper trailer am sorry to hear having some trouble with your hybrid van I am also looking if was going to up grade from my camper trailer in few years time I differently would consider your type of 11 ft hybrid van To buy. thanks on the tare weight and ATM towing weights very interesting

Have you considered putting in an idrive throttle control? Best $300 I have ever spent! You will be amazed how responsive the vehicle becomes without compromising the engine.

I think when you shoot your car n van everything might looks bigger haha I'm not sure though .. it does look pretty tough though.. and its condition is that new flashy car look .. i think you definitely compromised a bit of everything to get all all the luxarys of a new car ..
