In this episode of Photography Online, we venture to what we reckon could be the best view in the world. Join us as we camp overnight to photograph the sunset and morning light in this amazing location. We also head off to Cuba to look at panning with a moving subject. We'll tell you all you need to know if you fancy giving this technique a go. We catch up with the Photo Challenge team as they push into the second half of their 7 day quest to shoot all 15 UK national parks. This time they are at the Pembrokeshire Coast, Brecon Beacons and the Norfolk Broads. Then we get out a 4x5 wooden camera to take some shots in an old abandoned building.
We also have news of a new brand which we will be running all our future trips under, plus tell you how you can join us on any of our annual photo holidays.

Another cracking video, full of interest, humour and brilliant advice and guidance. On my 'must watch' list every month. I was fortunate to visit Hunts Mesa in April 2023 with these folk and to say it was simply stunning would be an understatement. We had similar conditions and managed to get some amazing images. The Navajo guides are brilliant and make sure you get to these incredible locations in safety. The drive in and out was epic! Highly recommended.

I've yet to make it to Monument Valley and I head to the southwest US every spring. Hunt's Mesa, eh? Very cool. I like that panning piece too, very good. I was at a racetrack two weeks ago it went pretty well, but made a huge rookie mistake by forgetting an ND. At least the conditions were forgiving and not overly bright. I always found it easiest for panning to be at 90° to the road, and preferably on the inside of a smooth radius curve. This means perspective on the vehicle doesn’t change much.

It hasn’t been renamed. The Park Authority are choosing to use the original Welsh title Bannau Brycheiniog as the official name. I find using original names of places very interesting add often insightful. Lots of people will still visit the Beacons as the well known English version.

@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 29 дней назад
Hi Max. We are doing less and less astro stuff on our trips as it’s becoming increasingly specialist and if you’re also doing a full itinerary during the day, it tires people out too much. Hunts Mesa is not actually that good for it anyway. You really want to be down on the valley floor for that, rather than up on a Mesa. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the show.

Excellent show as allways. In the panning shots do you set the AF on AI Servo to compensate for moving subjects on One Shot setting?
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 29 дней назад
If you know where the subject is going to be (such as is the case of a car on a road) then the best thing is to pre-focus in manual focus. Typically you will be using f/11 or f/16, so the depth of field will be sufficient to compensate for any minor distance discrepancies. Hope this helps.

See the view isn't quite the best in the planet. It's all a matter of what you're used to. I bet people from there would go to Scotland and have their minds blown at the views. I'm originally from Scotland and moved to Vancouver Canada back in '06. The views from around here that are all taller than Ben Nevis, the start of the Canadian Rockies would blow most peoples mind, and they still do for me. But it's like you become so used to a view right on your doorstep that you start taking it for granted. I was recently on a little train ride from France to Italy that cut through Switzerland, as it came out of a tunnel, beautiful mountains, amazing views... everyone on the train piled over to my side and was snapping pictures, I removed my headphones, looked up from what I was watching on the tablet and thought, oh yeah cool.. looks kinda like back home. Then went back to what I was watching. I guess I really have no point here other than, best view in the world? I dunno mang.. it's all to do with what you're used to. I've had people over here tell me how unbelievably amazing Scotland was on their two week visit and how they can't understand why I'd EVER leave there for Vancouver. Yet, they've never travelled more than 30minutes outside of the city here.

thoroughly enjoyed the piece about Monument Valley. A little disappointed that the section on 5x4 photography was soooo short, thought Marcus could have covered a bit more about camera movements specific to the 5x4 or even talked about bellows factor for ths piece, instead he just took a picture of a door.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline Месяц назад
Hi Malcolm. Thanks for taking the time to comment. To address your points, there was no bellows extension required for this shot and as I said in the feature, I chose not to apply camera movements (other than a hint of lens fall) as they weren’t necessary. It’s therefore not easy to explain something I am not doing - although I did explain why I wasn’t applying swing. We’ve done features about lens movements in the past and we’ll certainly do it again in the future, so keep watching. All the best

OK, so I'm a POOS, because I really enjoy the show. If I was to have one comment, it is that the "analogue affairs" stuff is far too dominating for my taste. I get that Marcus is a dominant personality and has his own agenda, but I do question how many people have any interest whatsoever in analogue photography. For my part, it leave me stone cold. I simply don't see the point any more. The rest of it leaves me open-mouthed ... the trip to Monument Valley literally had me in tears. Given my rather advanced years, will I ever get to experience anything like that?
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline Месяц назад
Hi Chris. We appreciate that film photography isn’t for everyone, but as we say in the programme - there’s plenty of generic photo info in there which can be applied to digital. But to answer your question, according to the analytics which we get, Analogue Affairs holds the audience better than any other part of the show. There are plenty of people out there who are interested in it, but we put it at the end of each show so that if you’re not interested then it’s easy to turn off. Glad you enjoyed the rest of the show. We appreciate your feedback and support.

Another excellent POL. Thank you. A small point for Marcus. Mesa is pronounced maysa. And, in Monument Valley, the other tall feature is called a butte, pronounced buoot, not butt. A simplified definition is that buttes have smaller diameters than mesas. And the next time you go, check out Goulding’s Lodge and the old Goulding’s Trading Post. A great place to stay or just eat and lots of history. It is because of Harry Goulding that so many movies were made in Monument Valley, especially providing periodic jobs and income for the Navajos during the Great Depression. 😊
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 29 дней назад
Cheers Stuart. You’re right about the pronunciation - I’ve just got into a bad habit of saying it how I say it. With regards to Gouldings - we have stayed there in the past (also at The View) and now stay at neither as there are better options in the area. We’ve toured most of the area over the years, so have finally narrowed down the good bits and the not so good. Thanks for watching as always. (Marcus)
